Had a few more cobfuls of Haebar VaPer over the course of the day. Helped ease my troubled mind - I took the day off to drop a very large dead tree, but had a few problems. First the danged thing wanted to fall the wrong way, toward the deck/house, and meanwhile trapped the bar of my saw. So I put a rope on it and persuaded it to fall in the right direction, more or less, with a ratchet strap aka come-along. After a round or two of axing and tugging, it started to fall but came to rest against another tall tree, and the saw is still trapped. At least it's stable now. I called a professional to take a look at it tomorrow. Hope he doesn't skin me alive :(

While the tree was still standing precariously, a lady walking her dog on the trail adjacent to our yard and wanted to chat (a guy working in the yard always wants to chat, doesn't he?). I strongly suggested that she move along and get out of the tree's radius, and it took a few tries with increasing vehemence. Now she probably thinks I'm an unfriendly jerk, oh well, could be worse :)

Last night I got into a couple of bowls of GH Sweet Whisky Twist in various pipes. Very full bodied aromatic with very subtle, almost imperceptible, flavorings. I enjoyed this immensely but had a little trouble keeping it lit. Put it in the blender and pulsed it a few times to get a consistent cut and then let it air for a few hours and it stayed lit considerably better.

I've been smokeless for almost 36 hours. Girlfriend came over yesterday feeling sick so I took her to the clinic where they diagnosed strep throat. Since her mother is an elderly, cancer survivor with a compromised immune system, she quarantined herself at my house until the antibiotics had a chance to get in her system and make her non-contagious. She's gone now and I'm about to fire up a bowl of G&H Scotch Flake that I have been rehydrating over the last couple of days. When I got this flake in the mail it was loosely wrapped in some cellophane - no zip-lock bag to keep it from drying out. Hopefully it hasn't lost any flavor as a result. Going to smoke it in this Sunrise billiard:

Smoking a bowl of SPC Mississippi River in a Sydney P. Ram bulldog. I love this blend but something is wrong here, I'm just not enjoying it. It's not just this blend or this pipe either, even my favorite tobaccos just aren't doing it for me lately. Either the love is gone or all my pipes are so in need of cleaning that everything tastes like crap. I hope it's not the former but I have doubts that it's the latter since many of my pipes have only been used a couple of times since they were last cleaned. Anyone else ever experience anything like this?

I get it pretty reliably if I go off on a tangent and smoke too much (i.e. deer season). Cure seem to be to just lay off tobacco for a couple weeks and allow your palate to reset. For a milder case of the blahs I'll switch to a totally different genre that I like but don't smoke often, like G&H ropes and twists. However, for a full blown case, laying off seems to be the only cure.

Tried another bowl of SG, Sam's Flake last night. Still pretty 'meh' but who knows, it might eventually grow on me

Yep! I get burnt out on favorites every once and a while.

I experienced that many times over the years. Sometimes you need to reboot your system; just put the pipe down for a while. Sometimes I go totally tobacco free for a day or more and can't believe how good it is to light up a pipe again.

My tin of ABF went empty this morning, so I'm now puffing a fill of Fribourg & Treyer Cut Virginia Plug from a just-opened tin. Of all the tobaccos that can be described as lightly topped straight Virginia, this one is my favorite. I've not seen it mentioned by any other member, so I'll say a few words about it.

The two neat stacks of rectangular flakes are very pretty -- light brown, with even lighter and darker bits. And wonderful aroma too. Mild, but rich, flavor -- some from the tobacco, some from the topping. Very nice room note too -- even non-smokers like it. Nicotine content is about average.

The only problem with this tobacco is that its status at SmokingPipes is nearly always "Currently Out of Stock". But I have 61 tins of CVP in my stock. I plan ahead...

Had a bowl of (mostly) G&H, Bob's Square Cut on a trip across town. It needed something to offset the predominately grassy/floral flavor (which I don't care for) of this weed so I amended the charge with a few shreds of Black Twist Sliced. Perked up the flavor considerably and was quite nice for the first half of the bowl but the dark, oily flavor of the BTS started to get annoying toward the bottom. I think next time I'll try adding a bit of Sliced Brown Twist instead.

I haven't smoked any English mixtures for years and years. Something put me off them, but it was so long ago that I don't remember what it was. But a nudge by Aguineapig induced me to give them another go, so I ordered a tin of Solani 779, English Luxury Mixture, and I'm now puffing my first fill.

I chose that one for a couple of reasons: First, I've been impressed by the quality of Solani tobaccos. Second, reviews of the 779 were generally positive, and a couple of them said that the Syrian Latakia had been judiciously applied -- that sounded good to me.

So how do I like it, you ask. Well, the tin note is quite nice -- even exotic, for a Virginia guy like me. And it tastes pretty good too, by golly, and is a change of pace for me. I suspect that I'll be ordering a few more tins.

All the basics are met too: it packs nicely, and takes fire easily. So thanks for the nudge, Aguineapig!

Not a pipe rotation day, but I had a shipment of cigars come in so while doing some errands and yard work I chewed through 2 Gran Habano 2002 vintages, a 5 Vegas classic, and a HC Habano^2. Really enjoying the 2002 vintage and the 5 Vegas, HC was nice but first lighting up it is SPICY. Mellows out nicely though.

Had a self-blend I made of approx 60% D&R Windsail (Bright VA), 30% D&R Two Timer (Burley) and 10% Perique. Pressed into a crumble cake in a little wooden mold I made. I was shooting for something that'd taste similar to C&D three friars. This is a bit spicier with more woody notes, but I like it fine. The pressing helps to deepen the flavors a little bit and marry things together (along with light hydration before hand). Pretty good in a cob. Flavor picks up about 1/4 of the way into bowl.

Just got back from the Knoxville Pipe Club meeting. Seven of us showed up. We're fortunat to have two members who are pipe makers and one which is a very good pipe repairman. I bought a pipe from one of them tonight and the other one showed me the Canadian that he is making for me. I don't need any more pipes but these have a personal touch and will mean a lot to me. So I am thinning the herd a bit and am offering some of my other pipes on ebay.

Tonight I had a bowl of DPE (David P. Ehrlich) in a Group 5 Dunhill Bent Brandy Bruyere. This is a very tasty mild English; several of us smoked it and liked it.

Followed by a bowl of McClelland Yenice Agonya in a group 4 bent billiard Dunhill Shell. This is one of their Grand Orientals series. This was a very interesting and enjoyable smoke - very different and exotic.

And finally a bowl of Solani White & Black 763 in a straight billiard Dunhill Shell. I liked this after I let it dry a little bit - right out of the tin it was nippy and hard to keep lit.

I ought to try the Solani White & Black. Every Solani tobacco that I've tried has been excellent, except for the Tropical Mango Flake, which was horrible. But then I'm not an aromatic fan.

Edit: I now regret tossing the Tropical Mango Flake after one fill. A mixture of 80% DF and 20% TMF might've been interesting.

I dry it too. In fact, I dry everything. If I don't dry tobacco the flavor comes across as steamy and muted IMO. I also prefer this blend roughly rubbed out or cube cut. Seems it doesn't have enough surface area to really shine if I smoke it fold n stuffed. And no, if it wasn't called 'chocolate flake' I'd never peg the topping as chocolate. It's just a very nice tobacco with a mysterious, "deeper" flavor to me. I also love the sour notes in the first part of the bowl... which you don't get as much of if you don't break it up a little.

Thanks, I started to clear off a place on my desk and left the cords there to hold the pipe up. Thanks for the beeswax tip; I put some on before smoking and it helped some. The stem fit has tightened up considerably after smoking it. The heat and moisture swells the briar wood a little bit and makes the fitting tighter. I don't know when this pipe was smoked last; I got it on Ebay. The stem was so loose that the bowl would fall off if you tipped it just so.

The Poplar Camp is definitely worthy of smoking some more. After the initial lighting and down about 1/4 bowl it became very enjoyable. I don't know whether the wankiness of the first part of the bowl was due to the tobacco or the pipe. The pipe may have had a ghost. I need to smoke a few more bowls before I can give a fair review of the tobacco.

This weekend it was all G&H Rum Flake and SG Chocolate Flake in the big ol' MM General: one bowl a day. I ordered 1# of G&H, Sweet Rum Twist...

I assume this substance is tobacco... because I haven't gotten sick or died... and because, while smoking it, I still retain the same jaded, pessimistic outlook on life in general... that and nothing unusual seems funny... I wish I knew what it was but I know what it ain't; and it ain't SRT. Even so, for an aromatic, it's really pretty good. I've sent them 2 emails about it but thus far they're ignoring me.

Hey David, what do you think about that White Knight? I've got a tin of it but have never tried it.

Not great at descriptions, but it's smokey and sweet with a good balance. Has a great, but not long enough finish. It's kind of similar (to me) to Black House, but I think the Black House has some Black Cavendish in the blend....

I was smoking a little R.O. Firestorm this morning after breakfast, and my niece (who is visiting today) walked up and said, "Eww, that smells like bacon!" I said, "Hmm, I guess I can see that."
She walked off, and I enjoyed the quiet.

BACON.....who said BACON? I'm in!!!!!! Geeeesh, I love BACON!!!!!!......

I love the off-the-wall stuff kids say :)

No kidding. My good friends 10 year old niece was crappie fishing with us a few weeks ago. She came over and sat next to me and we fished while trying to solve several of the world's problems. She kept looking up at my beak and blurted out that I sure had a hairy nose and that I should consider doing a bit of cultivation. I went home that evening, and went to survey the issue and it wasn't that bad. I guess if you're looking up, it may be worse......

Where the hell has JimInks been on this thread? We miss you amigo.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. I hadn't posted in a long time because I just got very self conscious of hogging this thread so much, and wasn't seeing a lot of other smokers. I hate seeing so much of me and so little of others. I need to see what others are smoking a lot more than I need to post my smokes. I'm glad you need to see me, but I need to see you guys just as much. Also, I've been very busy with a lot of things, and cut down on the number of forums I have been on, and cut down on my posts on the ones I have stayed on, even PSF. I admit it is heart warming to be missed.

Welcome back Jim! It is great to see you come back. What do you think about blends with deer tongue in general?

Thank you, Haebar.

I've only tried a couple, so I don't have enough frame of reference to adequately answer your question. I like Crooner, more so than I did when I had tried it in the past. Then again, the formula has been changed since then, and a little less deer tongue is in this mix now. I wish I had tried Henie's Blend when it had deer tongue, but I never even saw that blend until recent years.

Truth be known, you'd probably live a lot longer in the end :D :D

As for me, I don't smoke all the time - only a bowl every couple days except when I'm out hunting or fishing.

I also don't post about a smoke unless it's noteworthy (or I'm bored and don't feel like doing anything else). I mean who cares if I smoked a bowl of Prince Albert and it tasted average and behaved like every other time me or anyone else has ever smoked Prince Albert. So what? Now if I smoked a bowl of PA and it blew me away for some reason then I'd post about it. Likewise if I smoked a bowl of Penzance and it was particularly awful I'd post about it. But the average stuff? I don't bother posting about that.

When I met my wife, she was helping to conduct anti-smoking clinics at her church. When we decided to get married, I said I only have one rule. I've been a pipe smoker since I was 13 and been smoking in the house since I was 16, and that I wasn't going to be one of those guys who goes outside to smoke his pipe while holding an umbrella in the rain. I said if you can put up with that, we'll never have a problem. Well, July 2 will be our 28th wedding anniversary, and we've never had a problem, and never gone to sleep at night mad at each other.

As for cleaning my pipes, I do that myself. I did ask my cats, Suzy and Molly, to help out, but all they wanted to do is to bat around and chew on the pipe cleaners, the little moppets!

Relaxing after a wonderful steamed mussels dinner with a bowl of MacBaren Burley London Blend in a 2001 black sandblasted three quarter bend Rinaldo Lithos YY bulldog with a tortoise shell acrylic stem.

Well I'm a numbers man and I can help you out with one eye closed, and probably with one hand tied behind my back. Let me try.....errrr, I think I can. It's coming to me... You have over 61 blends, and over 7 pounds of tobacco..... Errrrrr....was I correct?....

That's great Jim! Congrats on her putting up with you that long! I know it's a two way street, but you're right about never going to sleep mad at each other. It'll just fester in the morning. We don't argue because things can always be worked out with calmer heads. If there's a problem, just face it head on and do exactly what she tells me to do. I've been following Nannette around since August 31st 1991. She probably wouldn't have kept me around that long, but I can still out run her, so it looks like I'm still following her. Anyhow, I'm blessed to have a woman who'll put up with all my faults, as few as they are......😁

No, no, no, no, no.... I have 2,000 blends which I merged into six strands of tobacco. David Copperfield taught me how to do it.

Well I just knew I was correct! I just knew you had over 61 blends! I just amaze myself, and probably you and most on here also. I'll just jump out there and predict that you have more than 3....Errrrrr, I mean 2 lighters or other means to light a pipe.... I just have a feeling that I'm not that far off....

Been meaning to try a chaw of G&H Sweet Whiskey Twist, finally got around to it. Cut a 3/16" coin and cut that in two with a razor blade. Not bad at all but SRT is still the best rope for chewing (and smoking) IMO. YMMV of course, especially if you're a whiskey drinker, which I'm not...
