Hittin the aros lately, trying out the various blends from Tobias' inventory reduction. Had some Russ Ouellette (sp?) Snow Drift earlier while flushing the coolant in Maybelline, and now having a bowl of Kentucky Club Mild. I normally smoke English and VA flakes, but it's fun to try some different blends once in a while.

Puffing F&T Vintage in my Il Duca Rhodesian. It’s going down especially well today. Perhaps because I’m so comfortable inside, while it’s rainy outside. I can smoke inside all year round in San Diego. I open an upstairs south window, and my downstairs north balcony door, and have a gentle draft through the whole house to clear smoke. With a wool sweater, I’m perfectly comfortable.
I think that the Rhodesian might have the loosest definition of all the standard pipe shapes. They’re generally said to have bulldog bowls with round shanks. But neither of my two Rhodesians fit that description. My Il Duca has a broad oval shank, and a single, extremely narrow, groove around the bowl:
Il Duca Smooth Rhodesian (D) | Buy Il Duca Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/duca/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=124051)
And Dunhill calls my 3117 a Rhodesian, but any piper would immediately identify it as a squat bulldog. It has all of the bulldog characteristics: a diamond shank and two parallel grooves around the bowl.
San Diego has a wonderful climate!
Having a bowl of Davidoff Royalty in a Savinelli 111 KS straight sandblast billiard while waiting for my Mexican leftovers to heat up slowly in the oven. Drinking Red Rose iced tea.

Puffing my once-a-week fill from my jar of FVF. It was cellared Feb. '07, so almost exactly ten yo. I chopped it up first thing this morning, then let it sit while I smoked a fill of F&T Vintage, so it would be dry enough to burn.
And sipping a cup of Nespresso Roma, a medium roast Arabica-Robusta espresso. And the sun has come out too -- life is good!

Smoking report from this afternoon - put a few racks of St. Louis cut ribs on the smoker after church today, and had a friend over to enjoy the unseasonably warm afternoon for a couple beers and a few of the aromatics from Tobias' bulk sell-off.
He brought over his suppressed 22 & I pulled out my pellet gun; I lit off a pack of firecrackers so we covered all the bases - alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives :)

I am, but afaik that's to restore an old pipe, i.e. to get rid of left over or rancid tobacco tars and flavors. This was a brand new, albeit inexpensive pipe. The horrid cast it was giving off was no doubt due to the finish being slopped down into the bowl and then covered over with an equally vile tasting, black, furnace cement-like substance posing as an artificial cake to supposedly make break-in easier. I didn't think a s/a treatment would have much effect against that so I just decided to smoke thru it.

In the process of inventorying and organizing my tobacco cabinet (see this colorful thread (http://www.cigarbum.com/forum/general-pipe-discussion/brucks-ocd-witness-7232.html)), I discovered that I have several jars containing only about one bowl worth of tobacco. 1792 gets both love and hate it seems.
I particularly enjoy it folded and stuffed alongside a cup or 3 of hot coffee. It goes so nice with coffee.

Forgot: last night was a bowl of McC, Smyrna #1 in the gourd. This is a fun pipe, it changes the nature of every blend I smoke in it. Not totally but enough to notice. The smyrna was sweeter and less earthy than the last time I smoked it in a briar. Excellent blend tho. I may have to stock up on some of this if it's available... even tho the last thing I need is moar tobakko...

Some folks really don't like the stuff. Some can even taste it in the pipe months later and try everything to get rid of the ghost. It does ghost a pipe but seeing as I enjoy the flavor I don't mind and it goes away after a few smokes.
Try it folded and stuffed. Keep the flakes as intact as possible and dry the tobacco out good. I find 1792 a little too harsh for my taste rubbed out, and it doesn't rub out good either - just turns to dust and splinters no matter if it's wet or dry when I try. Folded and stuffed tho, it's far more mellow and creamy. Still doesn't like to burn. Bring lots of matches.

I'm of the opinion that all flakes should be kept as in tact as possible.
I realize the Gawith stuff needs substantially more drying time than others in order to accomplish this.
If I want it rubbed out, I'll just buy a ribbon cut.

I have tried the cube cut method and like it better than rubbing it out.
The SG Full Virginia Flake I'm smoking right now is actually cube cut. Several months ago when I was experimenting with the method I cube cut an entire tin of FVF and jarred it up. I'm about halfway through it.
I may slightly prefer it prepared differently now, but it is one of my favorite tobaccos and it is still being enjoyed thoroughly.
And I would certainly never tell another man how to enjoy his tobacco. :pipe:

The Smoker's Haven tobaccos are blended by JF Germain IIRC. They're ribbon cuts are a bit longer than most others, but should pack well with this method.
Cheers.

I had the name slightly wrong. It's Smokers Haven of the Southtowns and I'm not so sure this place is associated with the other Smokers haven stores. I know it is not tied to the online store, it has it's own web page. The owner carves his own pipes and supposedly blends everything in house, but who really knows.
Either way the pipe seemed to stay lit a bit better and I seem to enjoy this better than the Carter Hall so far.

Alternating fills of DF and Capstan Medium (blue tin label) in my big Il Duca Rhodesian.
But some bad news… I was on SmokingPipes web site this evening, and noticed that 50g Dunhill Flake now comes in the round tins, rather than the little rectangular ones. I keep enough tobacco on hand that storage space is a big issue, and those round tins are far less space-efficient than the little rectangular ones. I might have to think about an alternative for DF. But I currently have enough on hand to last a few years.

I've been smoking some homemade tobaccos made by a member of our pipe club, Ted Sluder. Last night I smoked an unnamed blend that has Perique, red Virginia, Burley and bright Virginia that is topped with Jack Daniels Honey Jack in MM CG. This morning I had one of his blends with some McClelland's 5100, latakia, and Oriental; this one also topped with Honey Jack. Smoked this one in a Ben Wade second bent bulldog.

Rainy and 50° or thereabouts. Good evening for some calabashery. Something stout sounds good but the only thing I have on hand is D&R Picayune which I don't care for. Maybe the gourd will work some magic on it...
update:
The gourd seems to tone the pepper down to a tolerable level and bring out some sweetness and a nutty flavor. Still not my favorite blend but much better than the last time I smoked it in a cob. I could probably get used to this. Everybody needs one of these pipes; it's fun to smoke.

Another thing I heard about Picayune is that some age will take the edge of the nearly painful level of spice. I have a pound, so we will see many years down the road if it holds true.

Had something at the local shop today that was different. One of the regulars had me try something he whipped up.
He had meant to order some PS Bullseye flake and accidentally ordered the twist flake. He rubbed it all out and added Perique at an 11-1 mixture.
It was actually very good.

Some folks get along smoking a single tobacco exclusively. Notably, J. R. R. Tolkien (author of "Lord of the Rings") smoked only Capstan Medium (blue tin label). Me? I like the variety of a few significantly different tobaccos. Currently puffing Escudo (after a fill of Capstan Medium).

I think Tolkien's kids remembered he smoked mainly Capstan, but he also smoked Player's navy cut, supposedly three nuns, and in a letter he wrote to a pipe smoker who wrote asking what he liked, he even mentioned "Van Rossem's wasn't bad" (think, Troost slices, etc). I think he stuck to VA flakes though.

Just be patient, it takes a while to get it right. I've been at it a few years, and I would say I can smoke a pipe reasonably well, but I'm still not good at it.

Wow man, hope you get on the mend and back to 100% soon!
I depleted my rotational jar of Old Dark Fired ( though I have about 1 & 1/2 Lbs in my cellar ) So I had to pop a new tin to replace it. Went back and forth between Escudo and Solani Aged Burley Flake, the Solani won, so I have a nice dark flake ready to go as soon as I am done with this Curley Head Deluxe.
If any of you like burley and haven't tried the Aged Flake by Solani, I suggest you give it a try, some really yummy baccy!

How many oz/g in the aforementioned brick ?
3.5 ounce/100g. Cheaper than I remember it being a few years back, about 18 or 19 a brick I think. This coming from a fella who don't like to spend "full price" on bulk blends, meaning 30 bucks a pound for C&D. Most of my cellar is stuff like D&R purchased during sales (15-20 a pound), some Stokkebye from sales (20-25 ish a pound), and my "luxury" stuff like C&D for around 27-30. Plus plenty of bargain stuff like Smokers pride rich taste, and a crap ton of Lane ready rubbed I practically purloined from P&C for a buck an ounce.
So, I am cheap, basically. :loco:

Haha! I guess you are! 7 bucks for 50g isn't bad at all for tinned tobak... ya cheapskate! :p
My bulk purchases are usually Gawith Hoggarth or Sam Gawith; usually over (or well over) $50 per pound. (However, Peter Stokkebye and Newminster both make Va flakes that are delicious with a little age on them so I'll swing to the cheaper end if it's good.)
Digressing here but the way I see it, tobacco (as well as things like beer, bacon, corned beef hash, sausage, etc) are at best, unnecessary and really aren't even good for you. Therefore if I'm going to enjoy them I'll make sure I REALLY enjoy them. (and usually in moderation if only because of the price) I don't buy lousy bacon, I don't buy mediocre tobacco, and I don't drink Budweiser... :D

I'm mostly with you. Except I've had McClelland blends that cost 50 a pound that I thought kind of sucked. G&H is great and I have a small stash. I just like simple. I only do 2-3 bowls a week these days so simple appeals to me. I don't smoke or keep anything I don't enjoy. Just blessed with a "simple palate", same with food.
although I don't know about that "not good for you" bit.... Lot of those centenarians swear by bacon, endless cups of black coffee, and a wee nip of the ol' bottle. and a bit of tobacco. Oh I hear you. Just because it's $50 or $60 a pound certainly doesn't mean it's good. IMO anything with more than a passing whiff of that awful rose geranium is unsmokable. I don't care if it is G&H, in fact they're the worst offenders.
I had grandparents too, ones that smoked and ones that did not. The smokers both died in their 70's, nonsmokers: mid 90's. I remember the packs of Raleigh cigarettes they smoked with the little brown paper coupons under the cellophane. Of course they smoked like trains. I hardly think a little tobacco or for that matter, a little nip or a little of anything is going to hurt anyone. I fact, I'm thinking I'll go light up a little bowl of G&H Rum Flake in the calabash right now... and probably drink a glass of stout along with it.
