Puffing a second fill from a just-opened tin of Solani 656, Aged Burley Flake. This stuff has such a rich, tasty flavor that I wonder if it contributes to my daily calorie intake. Definitely a chocolate component in that flavor.

It's good to be warm and dry inside when it's rainy and cold outside. And puffing a good fill with a cup of coffee.

I'm not a real burley fan. Though I always keep Carter Hall on hand I use it mainly for breaking in new briars, and it's much more civilized than this blend. The tin note on this reminds me somewhat of Prince Albert, a blend I don't particularly care for. If this is representative of C&D burleys then I'll be avoiding them all.
If it's the harshness you don't like, I don't think you'd be enjoying the likes of Haunted bookshop, OJK, pegasus etc. I love em, but they are rough and aggressive, with lots of nicotine-- probably no 5 brothers level, but not too far behind. Aging them helps a little, but doesn't change them fundamentally. Not for everybody, for sure. Could be good to convert a strong cigar smoker I bet.

Branzig - yeah I wonder these things myself. It's always unsettling when familiar members of our community unexpectedly disappear for long stretches. Usually the reason is something not great but not the worst, like family or job crisis, a sudden displacement/relocation, personal health issues, deployment to the front, or secret agent mission. Often it's the latter because we pipe smokers are often called upon to save the world. I shall optimistically expect to see our friends again soon.

Having my first bowl of Dunhill's reissue of Ye Olde Signe, a ribbon cut pure Virginia. The tin note is very subdued with hints of tea and dried hay. Minimal drying was required and could easily be smoked straight from the tin. Lighting was done with a single match and being wary of bite I started smoking slowly, but as the sweetness of the tobacco began to come through I found myself smoking faster, but absolutely no bite. Dunhill calls this an aged Virginia, and it behaves like one. Sweet, smooth, and thoroughly enjoyable from first light to the bottom of the bowl. If you're a fan of aged straight Virginia, as I am, but wish you could find the Holy Grail of tobaccos that you could enjoy straight from the tin without waiting 3 years or more, this may be the one. Highly recommended.
Edit: I was enjoying this so much I neglected to mention the pipe used. It was a MM Country Gentleman with a stubby Forever stem.

My second bowl of Dunhill Ye Olde Signe, this one in a John Bessai squashed tomato, one of my favorite briars. I bought 2 tins of this but may pick up a few more as a Christmas gift to myself. I have, after all, been a good boy this year. This brings to mind an old Tonight Show episode when Ed MacMahon asked Johnny Carson what he'd say at the pearly gates when St. Peter asked him what in his life qualified him to be admitted into heaven. After a long pause he said "Well, I never kicked a dwarf." .... That's about how good I've been.

Gentlemen! I hope everyone is well, and season's greetings!
After a bit of prodding by Haebar and WNYTONY I figured it was worth popping in to play catchup. I have been busy; busier than I ever could have imagined. Smoking has taken a backseat to raising my now 7-month-old daughter, and dealing with a back injury hasn't helped, but I did manage to spend some time a few weeks ago in the smoking lounge/library of the club I belong to... I took my Parker Super Bruyere and a Polish-made beauty I picked up on eBay a year or so back and enjoyed some 1998 Capstan and 2003 Hamborger Veermaster.
I'm hosting a dinner party on New Year's Eve. My wife and daughter will be passed out by 9:30PM so I told my buddies that we'll head over to the club to end the evening with a smoke. Since we'll be full of roast lamb and egg nog (which has already been resting in the beer fridge for four weeks) I figure I'll need something like Royal Yacht to serve as dessert. I'll probably pull out the Stanwell HCA for the trip.
So, after leaving the tobacco business and after putting a cease-and-desist on new acquisitions due to a cellar already overflowing with more tobacco than I know what to do with, I haven't really paid attention to new blends. The bug, of course, is biting me and I probably won't be able to make it much beyond Spring before placing an order (hopefully by then I'll have more time to empty out a few more tins). I was hoping to get opinions on the following:
Dunhill Dark Flake
War Horse Bar
War Horse Green
GL Pease Regents Flake
Drucquer & Sons Blairgowrie

Well as a connoisseur of anhydrous flake, I've found a way to smoke them dry as a cork but still as flake. I hate it when they crumble to powder.
1) Select a flake of appropriate size to fill your pipe
2) Use a single edge razor blade to cut segments off the length of the flake, to approximate the depth of your preferred fill
3) Use the razor blade to cut the segments with the grain into 'sticks' of your preferred size
4) Put the sticks on a small paper - like a page of a note pad, then set the project out in a warm place to dry out like a cork
5) Once dry, carefully gather the dry sticks up and slide them into your pipe. They're a bit fragile at this point; the note pad paper helps with handling them.
There will always be a few small pieces left over from sticks that broke. I use those on the top to get the fire going.

I don't smoke a lot of flake, mainly because I'm too impatient to wait for it to dry properly, and it's been quite some time since I've had Dunhill Flake. It's been my experience that the flavors in most flakes are more concentrated. This ribbon cut burned much faster than flake and was done far sooner than I wished it to be, (which is why I followed it up with a second bowl.) So, the answer is that I don't have an answer, but I sure enjoyed this tobacco.

First pipe of the day is Dunhill's reissue of Dark Flake. The tin note is a combination of molasses and stewed plums, the flakes moist but difficult to remove in a single complete piece, somewhat crumbly. After drying for about 45 minutes I used the fold and stuff method to load the bowl of a MM Country Gentleman. After a two match light it burned well, slowly but evenly. The emphasis here is truly on the dark Virginia with Perique well in the background. It really hit it's stride about a quarter of the way down with a spiciness that was hard to identify, perhaps ginger but not what I'd expect from Perique. There was absolutely no bite and it burned well to the bottom of the bowl. As a Va/Per this fell kind of flat for me, but if dark Kentucky is your cup of meat you may enjoy this. I didn't dislike this but was a bit disappointed. I expect more from Dunhill.

That's the beauty of Missouri Meerschaum; the cheapest cob smokes as good as any $100 briar. Another nice thing is that a fifty cent fill smokes as long and as satisfying as any +$8.00 cigar IMO. I guess YMMV on that though... but it works for me.

Drying out a a bowl's worth of 'stick cut' Bright CR Flake.
I was jarring up 1/2 kg of this the other day and the last few flakes wouldn't fit in the jar so they got transferred to a temporary jar to be destroyed by fire in the near future. Today is the near future. Didn't like this flake much when I first tried a sample but that's no surprise; I find I generally don't like any blend the first time I try it... takes half a dozen bowls or so before I can render a judgement. However, it showed promise so I bought a box from Smokingpipes to cellar. This will be bowl #2 of Bright CR Flake. This one will be 'bone cracking dry' as Branzig put it.

-edit-
Still not a fan of this flake. Tastes like dry hay or straw with a little pepper here and there and an annoying floral note from the painfully obvious Lakeland topping. Some of the reviews I've looked up mention fruityness. I don't taste anything fruity at all; if I did, I'd probably like it more. That's what I look for in a Virginia; sweet, fruity and/or citrusy. So far this blend reminds me of cigarettes minus the taste of burning paper.
Going to crack a Briney Melon Gose and see if the pairing helps bring out something positive in this weed.
-edit again-
well so far the pairing hasn't done anything for the smoke but it sure has brought out some nice flavor in the beer

A bowl of Smoker's pride Rich Taste that I bought recently with a free gift card from Cigar.com. Read Jimink's review of it and thought I'd give it a go. I think it's great, and you can find it for 10 dollars a pound or less. Arrived dry which I like as 1. it means more tobacco and 2. no/very little PG/humectant presence.

...and an annoying floral note from the painfully obvious Lakeland topping. Some of the reviews I've looked up mention fruityness. I don't taste anything fruity at all; if I did, I'd probably like it more. That's what I look for in a Virginia; sweet, fruity and/or citrusy.
It's funny, becuase I sometimes feel like a bit of Lakeland Snot actually amplifies fruity notes...with that being said, if you're smoking beef jerky (I'm looking at you ropes and dark flake) then no amount of Lakeland will bring fruit tones out. Just flowery beef jerky.
Of course, I've yet to smoke a Lakeland Snot I haven't liked yet... so maybe my taste buds are just tainted.

I like the stuff Samuel Gawith calls 'Lakeland', the stuff Gawith Hoggarth uses... not so much.
However, it seems some folks enjoy that Geranium Rose or whatever it is and some don't. I'm definitely in the "don't" category on that. I've never liked the smell of rose scented things either, be it perfume, air freshener, candles, incense or whatever. I don't really even like the smell of actual roses all that much.

Haha! Yes, my 'investment' indeed :D
I haven't given up on it quite yet. Next time I try it, I'll rub it out to a ribbon and leave it more moist. Maybe that will perk it up. Ought to at least carry the Va sweetness (if there is any to be carried) a little better.

my favorite way to smoke it was to musketball it in a country gent, with enough moisture to musketball without it breaking all apart. Since it's mostly bright, I didn't get any kind of deep, earthy fruitiness I expect from the reds and etc. sugary, a bit acidic, and a touch cigarette like when not sipped.

Another highly rated blend that I just don't care for. I don't like burley adulterating my VaPers. It kills the taste.
Tried this blend a few years back and didn't like it. Still don't like it today. Good thing I've only got a small sample; can't wait to get rid of it and put something good in this mason jar. IMO Stokkebye LNF with a couple years on it is 100x better than this and MUCH cheaper as well.

Interesting flake this is. I get many of the same nuances I pick up in G&H Black Irish X. Amazing I know, right? Since they're both 'irish' whatever that means. Dunhill Bruyere (2110) (2010) | Buy Dunhill Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/dunhill/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=102238)
I bought it several years ago when SmokingPipes offered a discount on Dunhill pipes. The Liverpool is basically a billiard with a longer shank and shorter bit -- more briar, and less vulcanite to keep polished. It has much better grain than most Dunhills with the Bruyere finish. It's a great little flake pipe!

The first thing I did was order an assortment of wines for the dinner and a bottle of bourbon for me, then two legs of lamb and a ham. 1792 Flake stinks to high heaven. IMO so does Happy Bogie and Black Irish X. This Peterson Irish Flake I've been smoking seems like it would have a pretty bad room note but after a charring light then a trip to the house to fetch a couple beers, it actually smelled pretty good back in the barn. However, in sufficiently strong doses I'd bet the Irish Flake would end up driving most people from the room... as well as peeling the paint off the walls...

Nasty, nasty, nasty smoke! I keep getting some awful, chemical taste, especially on the relights. No doubt it's from stain and whatever else the pipe is finished with dribbled down into the bowl and then covered up with that black artificial cake goop they use nowadays. I wish they wouldn't do that. My first thought was to take a reaming tool and scrape all that stuff off but I thought better of it and didn't... prolly should have. Give me a restored estate pipe any day! (Unless it was previously used for Ennerdale)
The ABF sure shows promise though. Doesn't bite AT ALL and burns well even a little wet. Has a nice, smooth flavor when I'm not being poisoned by the curing chemical compounds in the bowl.

Trying to decide what decent tobacco to pervert in this nasty tasting pipe at lunch time... going to have to be a partial bowl because I don't have enough time at lunch today to properly "enjoy" a full bowl...That's alright though because half a bowl is about as much as I can stand. I do that too with leftovers. In fact, that's usually the deciding factor as to what to smoke next; whatever I think might go well with the partial bowl in hand.
No need for such antics this time around though. Puffing a full bowl of year old G&H Rum Flake in the new Canadian. The Rum Flake (stored in a mason jar with an upside down disk) has lost almost all of its flowery Lakeland stench and the new pipe has lost almost all of its awful chemical stench. Seems their loss is my gain because this is shaping up to be a nice, tasty smoke so far.

Just opened another tin of Solani 633, Virginia with Perique. Both components are superb. This tobacco isn't topped, but it generates delicious smoke with a prominent citrus flavor. Less Perique than Escudo, but more than Golden Sliced. 633 is my favorite VaPer.

I was quite content with my cobs, but he thought I needed a briar (who am I to argue). I haven't really smoked anything that I haven't liked yet. I enjoy the obvious differences in all of the pipe tobaccos, so much more variety of flavor than with the cigars. My palette isn't good at figuring out the flavors but I can definitely tell that they are different.

I prefer the taste of smoke from tobacco that hasn't filtered too much smoke, so I like shallow, broad, chambers. And, since I'm a holder, I like thick bowl walls that don't get hot. This pipe satisfies both points.
It also has the best grain of any pipe I own. Lots of straight grain, and perfect bilateral symmetry.

Happy New Year to all! The temps on NYE ended up reaching the 40s so I had a very nice and not-planned pre-dinner bowl of Ennerdale. We then dug into dinner and I had a change of heart re: the evening; instead of taking a pipe to the club with the fellas I grabbed a 2005 Cohiba Siglo IV which ended up being one of the most enjoyable cigars of my life. I was home before the ball dropped to celebrate with my wife and daughter but as expected they were in bed and comatose by about 9:30PM, so at midnight I whispered "Happy New Year" to them both and then went on the porch with, fittingly, a small bowl of Ten to Midnight and a glass of the last dregs from the bottle of Hancock's President's Reserve we almost emptied at dinner.

My dad smoked Sir Walter Raleigh exclusively. At a certain period of my younger life I had the notion that one should stick to one tobacco that they liked; I chose Half & Half as my tobacco because it was easily obtainable, had good tobacco flavor, and packed a moderate N content. I still smoke it every now and then, but it is not the same as it was in the late 70's. Not saying that it's bad, just different. Another codger blend that I smoked occasionally back then was Granger.

Tried a free sample of C&D Bourbon Bleu last evening. Not bad but there are better VaPers out there. This one is supposedly a VaPerKy (a genre I'm not partial to either - keep ALL your burleys out of my VaPers!) but with the first bowl ever, I didn't pick up any DFK and barely any perique... I also didn't pick up any bourbon, which it's supposedly topped with. All of which would have been fine I guess but it also seems to be mostly yellow Va with smatterings of other leaf. I'm no blender mind you but I think I would have liked more tangy, red Va in it. That and it's a crumble kake, which is one of my least favorite cuts... reminds me of compressed floor tobacco sweepings. I don't think I'll be buying any to cellar... not that it's bad but I already have more tobacco than I'll ever smoke. If I'm going to cellar a stash of something new it will be to replace something 'meh' so it had better be freaking awesome.

It is pretty new - within the last couple of months, I think. Lane is trying to get into the tinned stuff instead of being primarily bulk, or so it seems.

Samuel Gawith "Sam's Flake" in another new, inexpensive pipe: a Baraccini Ole Shenandoah Sandblast, Copper Stack Poker. It almost looks like a bent gavel... if there is such a thing. P&C had Old Shenandoah pipes on sale last week pretty cheap so I picked one up. Not a bad looking pipe at all; it just has to get more black around the rim and some dirt in the pores so it doesn't look so... lumbersexual.
Sam's Flake smells great in the tin; like some kind of apple fritters being baked... didn't care much for the taste first bowl but it holds promise so I'm sure it'll grow on me. Don't think it'll unseat the Mayor's Chocolate Flake though. At least this pipe doesn't exude the wretched chemical taste that the Rossi had. It's got that black, furnace cement gunk in the chamber but I don't get any nasty flavor coming off this one... I thought that Rossi pipe was going to kill me.

We have .5" of snow. The main roads are good, but the neighborhoods are still snow slick. I live on a corner/half circle and most people cut the corner (see F1 or Nascar Racing) to not use the circle. My neighbor is just perfect for someone to lose it and knock their mailbox down. I seen it go down once when a car tapped it with it's rear end today. It was just knocked off the post. I seen another dude come at it too fast and just locked it up to pile it into the curb. He tried to drive off a couple of times and got back out scratchin' his @$$ to look at his right front tire/wheel/fender assembly as it was one of those "Speck" style cars that doesn't have the clearance to run over a Walmart bag without issues. He eventually had to turn around and go back the way he came from. I assume to get it home before it fell apart.....

I hope Mrs. Bruck gets to feeling better soon. I just don't seem to heal up as fast as I used to. 25-30 years ago, I would've been laughing about it for a spell and have been healed up in 2 days. I laughed about it for around 2 minutes after it happened, poured 4 fingers of Buchanan's 18 year old scotch and decided it was getting awful late. I was talked into staying up until midnight to celebrate the new year. YeeeeHawwwww..... I appreciate it Bruce!

Puffing Capstan Medium, with 2+ years of age on it, in my Kirsten Mariner. Thinking of lunch… I'll have some of the Colin Street Bakery fruitcake that my brother and SIL send me at Christmas. Very tasty, it is. Especially after I dribble some Bushmills Black Bush Irish whiskey over it. They're Baptist, so I don't tell 'em about the whiskey.

I have a tin and about an ounce loose kicking around in my cellar. IIRC I picked it up with some Edgeworth from the 80s a couple of years ago from someone. The stuff is amazing.

It is the most robust and rich VaPer I have ever smoked, not that that's a good thing or to be bragging. What I mean is that it has a lot of body; you have to sip it or else be overwhelmed by the weight of the smoke. Not sure if it doesn't have too much Perique in it or if it is a factor with the two Virginia components that were from whole leaf. I enjoyed it and didn't get too addled by nicotine, but it is a really full-bodied blend.

I was lucky to nab a tin of Pelican in an Ebay buy a couple of months ago. It was in a lot of tins and I spotted it up in the far corner of the picture and asked her if they had been opened and she said no. Also got some older unopened Dunhill tins in the deal too. I'm hanging on to mine for a special occasion.

It's been raining here for 48 hours straight and is suppose to continue through Thursday. Normally, when I want a pipe, I'll grab my laptop and sit on the deck, but with all the rain I'm breaking my rule and smoking in my bedroom with a window open and a fan blowing out. A couple of coins of Escudo folded and stuffed into a Il Ceppo straight sandblasted Dublin. Escudo never disappoints.

Weather is nuts! It was 2 degrees yesterday morning and I was shaking like a dog trying to pass a peach seed. It looks like it'll be in the sixties for a high most of the week.....Just nutz......
Bowl didn't get too heated up, so I set it down for a spell and loaded the IL Monaco up with some SPC Mississippi River along with a splash of Crown Royal Black to keep the pie hole lubricated enough to consume such said tobacco.....

Alternating fills of Escudo and Solani 656, Aged Burley Flake, in my Il Duca Rhodesian. Both tobaccos are going great today -- a big improvement from yesterday, when both tasted a bit sour. I get that "sour" effect occasionally. No idea why -- can't correlate it to anything.
The Duke is the heaviest pipe I own, and my only bent pipe, but it's just barely bent…

decided to break 10 day tobacco fast with a Mark Twain Churchill. bad idea. I thought "pfahh, it's a connie, loose roll, it'll burn quick". eyes were bigger than stomach. Almost pulled it off, felt a touch queasy at 1 1/2" remaining and tossed it. 5 minutes later I was crapping my brains out and dry heaving. My nicotine tolerance is the worst! should have had a tiny bowl of three sails or Rimboche SJ or something. Live and learn (and puke).

It's still raining here, 4th day in a row, so once again I'm smoking beside an open window with a fan blowing out. H&H Anni Kake in a rusticated Mark Tinsky bent bulldog. There's a rumor going around that we may see the sun again on Friday. I'll believe it when I see it.

I'm rebelling with a cigarette and Folgers coffee, just haven't been in the right mood to light a pipe.
We're expecting a record high tomorrow. But come Friday morning we're looking at an ice storm that
could go thru till Sunday. I've been hanging sheet rock again and I can honestly say digging foxholes
was more fun.
