Having my first bowl of P.S. Proper English in a MM Marcus cob. The tobacco had quite a few small sticks which were easily removed and the pouch note suggested this would be a latakia bomb but it's not at all. It was somewhat moist and I let it dry for about 30 minutes before loading. I'm about half way through the bowl and no relights needed so far. I get occasional sour notes which I suspect is the Virginia. It's not a blend I'll reach for when I want a heavy latakia fix but maybe in the morning when I'm in the mood for a lighter English. This is one that I might play around with, adding more lat and perhaps some perique, but I'll also smoke it as is. Hopefully a little age will tame the sour Virginia.

Having a cobful of Gawith Black Irish XX. Here's my review on tobaccoreviews.com:

I tried a little experiment before smoking this stuff - I shaved off all of my chest hair. Sure enough, after one bowl it all grew back!

Seriously, Black XX is not for the newbie or faint of heart. I like to slice off a coin or two when I feel like a good kick in the pants. Flavor is strong, not at all sweet, rich, leathery, and nutty. I don't get that feeling of having my mouth coated with plastic that I get from other ropes.

Others have noted the rather off-putting appearance, so I won't dwell on that. My only issue with it is the difficulty of keeping a good burn going.

This stuff makes pretty good chaw, FWIW.

I've been smoking my metal-stem Kirsten Mariner exclusively for the past two or three months. But today I'm smoking my favorite conventional briar -- this one (which I bought several years ago):

PS Studio Sandblasted Pot | Buy PS Studio Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/ps_studio/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=103044)

I call it a 'Lumberpot" -- Lumberman stem, Pot bowl. It's ideal for me since it has the broad, shallow, tobacco chamber that I like (easy draw), and its bowl walls are thick -- important for a holder, such as me, because the bowl never gets uncomfortably warm.

This pipe is made in Russia, and has the cleanest, most accurate, drillings (chamber, draft and mortise) of all my pipes -- including my much more expensive Dunhill Liverpool. Grechukhin is a noted Russian pipe maker that sells very expensive (like about $1K) pipes. But he also oversees a two-man studio that makes pipes, of his design, that sell for for much less. This pipe is one of those. Its bit has a neat design feature: it's vulcanite, but the tenon is black Delrin, seamlessly set into the vulcanite. That thin-walled, elastic Delrin tenon has a wonderful fit -- stays in position perfectly, yet can be easily turned without jerking.

I guess I should mention what's in the pipe: alternating fills of aged DF and Capstan Medium -- both good, reliable smokes.

G&H Rum Flake in the big ol' General. This is another blend I had in a mason jar for a year with the lid disk upside down. Giving it that little bit of air does wonders to dissapate that rose scent I so despise. Nice blend now, though I think it would benefit from a splash of perique. I tend to like rum and perique together. They say this is an 'aromatic'; whatever the case, these are the kinds of aromatics I like.

Puffing my once-a-week fill of aged FVF in my dear Kirsten Mariner. Just enjoying its mild, delicious flavor, sipping my espresso, and listening to Vivaldi's "Gloria".

Ahh, Vivaldi! Good to hear someone around here has some musical taste.

The wife and I had a Romantic dinner of Baked Potatoes, Asparagus, and Meat Fondue.
We have a Bottle of Martini & Rossi Asti chilling, and Carrot Cake for desert.
(a Meat fondue is basicly deep frying chunks of meat table side)
Today is our 25th anniversary and we celebrated with our favorite dinner.
After dinner I sat back with a figural Meer and Nightcap.
Yep, been a Good Day !

Just back from my extended holiday weekend at my trailer in the boonies. Had a great Thanksgiving dinner with friends, some of whom I see far too seldom. It was a weekend of overeating, lots of good wine and just enough good bourbon, very good cigars, and many bowls of good tobacco. I took several tins up with me, but the last of my tub of aged H&H Anni Kake was the biggest hit and it was gone before the weekend was over. Now back home in my comfortable chair and with a belly full of homemade chicken and wild rice soup, I'm about to put a match to a bowl of Anni Kake from a freshly opened tin in a MM Country Gentleman. I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday as much as I did.

I used to have a pipe just like that! Great little smoker.

Was going to fire up a bowl of Briar Fox, but it's to damn cold out!

Guess I'll stick to the indoors and watch the Eagles lose.

Been away for the holidays. I did find some time to do some smoking with my bro-in-law.
Popped a tin of Dunhill Standard Mixture (2012) and a tin of McClelland Holiday Spirit (2014), and have been smoking those.
Also smoked some 30+ year old Mac Baren Virginia #1, that Haebar sent to me a while back. I'm stringing it out as long as I can, as it is pretty delicious.

Have you smoked the Dunhill Standard Mixture? Is the London mixture similar, but with more latakia?

Not yet, But I am a BIG fan of Dunhill Flake and Nightcap.London Mixture is a great addition to the mix.
I can switch off with my CB aros and orientals then cool off with the Dunhill blends.I need tocheck
my cellar, I don't think I have any Standard Mixture, I have Flake, Ready Rubbed and Nightcape,
as well as London Mixture.I also want to try Early Morning Pipe, should be close to Nightcap.

I believe this is an old 1930's era Kaywoodie Super Grain, but I'm not positive. It has "Super Grain" over "Kaywoodie" and "Imported Briar" over "5193D", but there's no stinger. Doesn't appear to have the stinger cut out so I don't know?.....

Great looking pipe regardless. Some models you could pry the stingers out with pliers.

I need to add a couple classic kaywoodies to my collection. The earliest I had was a 50s model and I ended up trading it off...

Technically it's only produced in the St. James Parish, LA, but our friend Larry the Tobacco Butcher makes it in KY and IMHO it's as good as the genuine article. I haven't heard of it being produced anywhere outside the US.

When I was a kid I lived on a small farm in rural Maine, and the farmer up the road raised hogs. He once told me that the only thing he used tobacco for was to soak in water and then spray the water on his hogs to kill ticks. The tobacco I'm smoking right now just brought that memory back to me, Five Brothers in a MM Legend. The vitamin N content in this tobacco probably would have killed the hogs as well as the ticks. Nasty stuff, but I do enjoy it every once in a while.

C&D Corn Cob Pipe (and a button nose) in a MM Legend. This is my third bowl from this tin and I'm trying to like it, but it's just not happening. The burley is just harsh and overpowering. Maybe with a few years of age it may mellow and be more well behaved, but this is the only tin I bought and I won't be buying another.

do you like the other C&D burleys? harsh would be one way to describe them. More like a cigar than it is something like PA or carter hall.

I'm not a real burley fan. Though I always keep Carter Hall on hand I use it mainly for breaking in new briars, and it's much more civilized than this blend. The tin note on this reminds me somewhat of Prince Albert, a blend I don't particularly care for. If this is representative of C&D burleys then I'll be avoiding them all.
