I have a 36 pipe rack, full. Pipes all over my desk. Pipes in boxes. Pipes in drawers, pipes in my tobacco cabinet, pipes in my 7 pipe carrying case, pipes everywhere. From this day forward I pledge never to buy another pipe. And this time I mean it. Except maybe for that one I have my eye on on Ebay. But that's it. Forever.
And now, my first pipe of the day. H&H Anni Kake in a no name smooth, straight French billiard.

I hear it's best to hire a cheap man--a man who doesn't amount to much, anyhow--who would be as well--or better--dead, and let him break in the pipe for you.
The leavings mixture is good. Starting from the bottom, I layered; LNF, SRT, Gaslight, then topped off with more LNF. The tobaccos are different enough that I could easily pick up the transitions. I'm burning thru the SRT layer now, wondering if I'll get to the bottom layer of LNF or if it will be too wet toward the bottom to burn.
-edit-
It got too wet. Just started picking up hints of the soft Va flavor of LNF and it got too wet and refused to burn.

It's discontinued now. Golden Extra is supposed to be similar but not quite the same and is still in production. I bought a pound of Golden extra but haven't tried a bowl yet. Smells sweet/honey like macbarens tend to, and I notice a distinct licorice aroma from it.

To me, it does. I love the stuff.

There are several differences between Golden Extra and BLB. GE is sweeter without the light edge that BLB has, which comes from white burley. Never noticed any licorice from GE, though.

First pipe of the day is Balkan Sasieni in a MM Legend cob. I'm becoming quite fond of this blend. It took me many years to come round to an appreciation for any blend with latakia, used to think they all tasted like soap, but in the last 3 years or so I've developed a taste, and sometimes even a craving for them. I've read a number of reviews on this blend. Some rate it highly, some not so much, but the common thread in the unfavorable reviews seems to be that it's not Balkan Sobranie. I've never had the opportunity to sample that blend, so cannot make a comparison, but I enjoy this enough to have just ordered several more tins.
Edit: While I do enjoy this I have to admit to finding the room note rather foul.

I kinda looked into that because it sounded fun to build a wind turbine. I was going to do it out of cut in half 55 gallon drums. The trouble with any of it is that if you have an AC generator, you have to somehow regulate the RPM to a constant 3600 for a 2 pole generator or 1800 for a 4 pole generator because that's where the 60hz frequency of the AC comes from... then, assuming you could accomplish that, as soon as the wind dies down your power goes away. Sounds like a PIA to me. Then you have the option of generating DC and using a bank of batteries and an inverter. That will give you reserve capacity plus 60hz but the cost of maintaining batteries and electronics far outweighs the meager value of the electricity you'd get from the thing. I still might build the contraption some day but instead of turning a generator, I think I'll hook it up to a cam and drive a well that keeps a big-ass stock tank full of water for the critters.
Drying out another flake of PS LNF.
I've got a tab opened up to Smokingpipes... trying to talk myself out of ordering a couple 24oz blocks of this stuff. I have plenty of pipe weed stored away... but then again, this is sure good tobacco... but I probably have more tobacco than I will ever smoke already... but then I keep hearing that 'all roads lead to Virginia'... but the money could be better spent on something else... but then this sure is a good price on tobacco...

What's the trick to smoking this blend? I've had a few bowls of it; starts out sweet but then turns to cigarettes and black pepper. I've never made it past 15 minutes before it got so nasty I had to dump it out. The reviews all say how wonderfully tasty and complex it is. Well I'm not getting that. But then I've not had much luck with shag cut blends in general.
I'm going to dry out some S.G. Chocolate flake for later. Trouble is, I can't remember if I usually rub this one out or fold and stuff... oh the hell with it, where's my jar of 1792...

For me it didn't start out sweet whenever I've had it-- always an intense, borderline painful pepper burn, with a bit of the heavy nauseating dark burley following it up. Moisturizing it probably helps a bit, and I talked to one guy who has aged some and says it cuts down on the "bite" (I assume meaning the insane pepper burn). Complex would not be a word I would use to describe it, but then again some of these guys who had a palate for heavy perique and dark burley can probably ascertain more things than I beyond it, I guess.
I just got a pound of it for posterity, since it was like 17 bucks with coupons. It's useful when you need massive amounts of nicotine. in my case, I am such a light smoker that I don't use it for cravings, but for medicinal purposes. Tobacco prevents/arrests development of canker sores in my mouth, which was a revelation when I made the connection since I suffered with them for years quite severely.

It says it is pipe tobacco but it makes excellent cigarettes, as my visiting friend said after rolling a couple and smoking them. With a 3" tall thick walled bowl, this thing is cool smoking and just great for a long relaxing smoke or to fill and take with me when I'm going to be away from the house for a few hours. I have one of those beasts. I bought it from someone on here, replete with authentic Forever Stem. I took it turkey hunting and puffed on one bowl of Red Raparree, off and on the entire day.

Yeah I know, back to back bowls in a briar aren't good. Don't judge me. ;)

Laid off the cigars for a while until recently, and the pipe for even longer, until now...picked out my small no-name discount basket mini church-warden that I had bought a year ago in a business trip to Philly but never smoked. Stuffed it full of the last of Esoterica Tillbury that I got from a Newbie Piper thing at the old Puff site from Tim (can't remember his screen name, but he was awesome). Wonderful afternoon smoke on the back deck, beautiful fall weather. I think I got me a little bit of tongue bite....but it was worth it!

This evening I am having a bowl of Dunhill's My Mixture BB1938 in my extra large Savinelli 606.:pipe: I picked up this tobacco last month and after smoking 5 bowls of it I have decided that I really like this tobacco. I definitely wish that Dunhill would offer this in bulk. BB1938 is delicious this evening and I am topping it off with an ice cold mug of "Guinness Draught" brew; the evening is young.:beerchug:

A bowl of LL ready rubbed. I appreciate the codger burley style more now than I used to, especially after smoking really strong blends for several days. This satisfies nicely, but doesn't leave me queasy. I prefer to err on the side of mild nic hit, than having to stop because I feel like I'm gonna hurl, which happens when I'm not careful with my favored C&D burleys etc.

You know, I just can't get into burleys much. I just don't care for the flavor... or lack thereof. Once in a while I'll get a craving for a bowl or two of PA or Velvet or PS cube cut, but then I'm good for 6 months or so.
I'm going for the mild nic-hit myself with a bowl of Sam Gawith; Chocolate Flake. When I feel like cheating death I head for the Va based ropes and twists :p :p :pipe: Funny how we all gravitate toward something different...

SG Chocolate Flake is on my list to try.
How does it compare to Bob's Chocolate Flake? Is it similar at all?
Right now I'm smoking Eliabethan Mixture. It's my 2nd bowl today.
There was a bowl of Frog Morton Across the Pond between them.

It's nowhere close.
There's not much in the line of chocolate flavor, there's zero lakeland perfume, it's darker and it smells sort of fruity with a touch of vinegar in the jar. To me it tastes like a dark pressed virginia (like dark star) but with some mysterious, 'deeper' flavor; which I assume is the chocolate topping... although it doesn't really taste like chocolate to me. At first light and for the first little bit of the bowl it has a bit of a tart flavor that I really like. Lately I've been rubbing it out a bit but leaving it rather chunky.

<snip>
Solani 656, Aged Burley Flake, is the only burley I've found that I like. It has LOTS of flavor.
And that flavor is much different than the Virginias and VaPers that I usually smoke, so a nice change of pace.
Blends nicely with DF, too.

Having a "raw" blend tonite - some fire cured dark air (VA) and perique, both from Larry the Tobacco Butcher. About a 2:1 ratio, no topping. Pretty much a clean tobacco flavor, a little cigarette-like, with a little tanginess from the perique. Semi-strong in the nic department.
Pipe is a MM - pretty sure it's a Diplomat; it's the one that's kind a wide egg shape.

First pipe in a couple days. Had a very busy day yesterday, took my daughter, son in law, and stepson out to an extended lunch at the local oyster bar to celebrate her birthday. She made fun of my 10 year old flip phone and finally convinced me to get a smart phone. So after lunch I went phone shopping, then came home and did more research online. Ended up settling on a Apple iPhone 6s and ordered the unlocked version online. It will be delivered Friday and if I can figure out how to use the camera I may now be able to post pics of my pipes. But for now you'll just have to imagine what this one looks like as I have a bowl of SPC Mississippi River in a MM Dagner Poker Cob.
