Matthew, What are your thoughts on the Black and Gold?
It's not as full flavored as I'ld like it to be, but has a nice wood tang to it. Not cedar or hay more
like a walnut wood smoke. It's light, not oily on the tongue and has a nice spice to it that kind of
tingles like cayenne pepper. In other words I like it quite a bit for a morning smoke, goes great with
hot black mud,,,,,,, coffee. I meant coffee. Would be great to tone done a heavy blend.

A friend came over and "helped" me work on the bike this afternoon. Drained the oil, and replaced with Marvel Mystery oil. Bled the new brake lines. Smoked a local house cigar, a bowl of Best Brown flake, H&H Virginia Spice, and several bowls of SPS Sunrise. Yes, that seems like a lot of tobacco for the amount of work accomplished. I admit, there may have been a lot of gabbing and looking at the bike. (It is a '74 CB750)

As a young boy I lived on an old farm in North Gorham, Maine, and every summer I'd spend one month with my widowed grandmother in the big city of Portland. She was a small woman, less than 5 feet tall and looked like the stereotypical grandmother of that era, gray hair in a bun, always wearing an apron. But where she differed from other grandmothers is that she was a rabid baseball fan. In the large china cabinet in the dining room were baseball memorabilia and knickknacks, and on the wall were pennants for the Boston Red Sox, and for a time, the Boston Braves until she finally gave up hope of them ever returning and took them down. The house was an old two story and throughout the house she had radios set to the station that broadcast the Red Sox games. Before game time she would go through the house turning all the radios on so she would never miss a play as she moved throughout the house doing her chores. I credit her with instilling in me a love of baseball and the Red Sox. They were a terrible team in those years but she never gave up on them. Her eyes would light up as she told me of the last time they won the World Series, 1918, the year she graduated high school. Her wish was to see them win it again in her lifetime. Sadly, she never did, but when they finally won in 2004, my thoughts were with her and all the others who waited a lifetime for the championship that never came. And this is why I'll root for the Cubs in the Series, for all those who waited but never saw it.

I finished off a tin of Escudo the other day, so that allows me to open something new. Digging through the mountains of tins I'll find one that looks good, but then think "this one needs another year of aging first", or "I know this one is good but I have an open tin of a similar blend." So I continue to work on getting the open ones down to a manageable number. Tonight it's Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture in a tall MM General.

Love some Elizabethan Mixture. I am never without some. When the jar gets low, another tin gets ordered. One of the few tobaccos I do that with.

20 of them? I don't think I have 20 pipes in total, including cobs!
Don't you have to let them air a day or three after cleaning to let them rum dry out of the wood?

After cleaning them I let them air dry with the stems removed. One day usually does it, the high alcohol rum evaporates pretty quickly.

Got my new cobs in the mail today. The Dagner Poker Cob is nice, though at $24 it's a bit pricey. I love the short saddle stem on it and wish they sold them separately for use on their other cobs. The only complaint I have is the excessive amount of black stain inside the bowl running almost to the bottom in one area. I suspect the first smoke isn't going to be very tasty while that burns off, so I'm loading it with Carter Hall. If I have to dump it out before I finish it I won't feel so bad.

Sorry guys for being a bit quiet lately, Haven't had a pipe in a day so haven't had a lot to say either.
Tried a second bowl of "Peach" in a no name briar. Can't decide on this one, room note is nice
kind of a peach cobbler going on, and the flavor has a sweet spicey tingle.I think about 10 or
20 more bowls and I might come to a conclusion.

When I bought this it was so sharp and bitey I didn't want to smoke it. Now it's got about a year on it and it's coming along nicely. This bowl has a sort of creamy, citrusy thing going on; like smoking an orange creamsicle or something... Although I imagine a creamsicle would gurgle a bit if you actually tried to smoke one. Reviews say this is unflavored, but I'm thinking there's some vanilla in the woodpile with this one. Might have to pick up more of this to sit on for a decade or so.

GWBowman sent me a couple oz of a bulk Oriental Blend, So today I've loaded a bowl in my
Casillero and I have to say WOW! This is what I remember being enthralled by as a kid. I would
walk the block and there was this one "old" man who would smoke his pipe on the porch while
reading the paper.Never yelled me for crossing the lawn to say Hi.It was funny the day he
caught another neighbor kid picking on me, he walked up and rather than yelling or grabbing the
guy, he sticks his pipe in the kids face and tells him "that boy is gonna remember this, and WILL
get even".That kid never picked on me or anyoneelse (as far as I know ) again. So,George
Thanks for brining it home !
