Ugh! I wish you'd stop singing the praises of Solani. I DON'T NEED ANOTHER TOBACCO TO HOARD!!! For the love of my wallet, say it's not all that special already!

I too feel sorry for the cigar guys. Every time I smoke a cigar I miss my pipe all the more.

Joe Stalin was a big fan of Royal Yacht. As a WW II ally of Britain, he had no problems with supply.

What? You say that he was a despotic, genocidal Communist dictator? Well, true, but you can't disregard his esthetic judgements on those grounds alone. His condemnation of Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District" was spot on.

Jim, I have been on a cigar smoking jag the last few weeks so I haven't posted anything in this thread in a long time. Even when I am smoking the pipe on a regular basis, I only smoke three bowls a day at the most. Just this morning I read an article about you in Pipe Collector Magazine, an issue from earlier this year. You are a credit to your hobby, having reviewed 1561 tobaccos to date. Whenever I am considering a purchasing a new tobacco purchase, I seek out your review on it because I know that it will be an accurate one.

A few years back I bought a number of tins of HOTW from a guy who was giving up the pipe. Many of them had 5+ years of age on them and I quickly blew through them. At the time, the one from Dec. 2008 was only two years old, so I put it in the back of the cabinet and forgot about it. Makes me wonder what else is hiding behind the mountain of tins in there.

Yeah. I need to find a cabinet to designate as my cellar. I have a large Rubbermaid box, but it is full, and I have another full cardboard box beside it, and all of my dresser drawers are about 1/3rd tobacco. Makes it easy to lose/forget about tins.

I gave up keeping my tobacco physically organized. Instead, I keep a spreadsheet which has one page for each tobacco. That page has one line for each tobacco purchase with a column for number of tins remaining from that purchase, a column for purchase date, and a column for location of the box containing them. E. g., loft or window seat, etc. At the bottom of the page is the total number of tins of that tobacco type.

In addition, I have a "summary" page that has a line for each tobacco, and a column for the total number tins remaining. And at the bottom, the sum of all of the tins in my stock. When that sum falls below 300 tins, I place an order for the most-needed tobacco.

The spreadsheet has a few other bells & whistles too, but I won't go into those.

C&D Haunted Bookshop in a no-name briar. Starting a second bowl; had to abort the first one - a wayward slightly damp leaf found its way into the air hole and there was no recovering from it. Nonetheless, it's an excellent tobacco. Got it from our friend Haebar a while back.

Update: I packed the 2nd bowl a little looser and it's burning just fine with no plugging.

& then my Mr. Brog ran out of fuel, so I had to use a bic disposable for backup. And I'm (was, actually) drinking a glass of cold hibiscus tea, good pairing. And I'm smoking in relative darkness. In doing so, I managed to drop the bic into my tea. So I had to finish it off with no tea and another bic.

Upon reflection, I determined that that was the worst thing that happened to me all day, so I guess I'd have to call it a pretty good day. At least I didn't drown my Mr. Brog :)

A couple of weeks ago I was on SmokingPipes to order more Solani 633, Virginia with Perique. I noticed Solani 639, Tropical Mango Flake. I'm not a fan of aromatics, but the other two Solani tobaccos that I've tried are so good that I took a flyer and ordered some 639 too.

Yesterday afternoon I smoked my first fill of it. Oof dah! Could scarcely endure it. Well, that was my last bowl of the day, which is sometimes not so good, so I resolved to try it again in the morning.

But this morning I couldn't bring myself to do that – so I opened a tin of DF with two years of age on it instead. Puffing that now – heaven! Back to basics!

Might try the 639 again – sometime. It had a bad effect on the taste of my coffee too. Might go better with grape soda, but I don't drink grape soda.

Hahaha! That'll learn ya!

I find I don't care for most aromatics. It's usually not that the taste is revolting, it's that it is nonexistent. However, mango always tasted like soap to me so I'm thinking this Mango Flake probably tastes like a Lakeland? :p :p

Speaking of Lakeland soap, I smoked a bowl of G&H Louisiana Flake last evening. I prefer to let this sit out at room temp for a day or so to dissipate as much of the rose-ish grannystink as possible, then re-hydrate if necessary. God only knows why they put that crap on good tobacco. IMO, this blend would be so much better without it.

Sometimes, when you have a large pipe collection as I do, you come across one that you haven't smoked in a long, long time. You'll pick it up and it feels great in the hand, the draw is effortless, and it's just a beautiful piece of briar, and you'll think to yourself "Why haven't I smoked this lately?". So you fill it with a good tobacco, in this case Royal Yacht, do a charring light, then lightly tamp and take a few draws and settle back to enjoy it. Then, suddenly you want to run and get an oven mitt because the bowl is so hot it feels like holding a hot coal in your hand. Ahh ..... now I remember. That's what happened with my Mastro de Paja earlier this evening, so I've made a mental note to grab a thick, folded napkin and burn a few bowls of Carter Hall and try to put some serious cake on this one.

It's been a peculiar day. Now, I'm not a young man. Hell, who am I kidding, I'm older than dirt. But there are things that will make you really feel the weight of those years on your back, and today I received one of them. This morning the phone rang just as I had finished pouring milk on my corn flakes, it was my daughter. The conversation started off with the usual "How are you doing? How are you feeling? How are you getting around?" Then a pause and a sigh, then "By the way, you're going to be a great-grandfather". My oldest granddaughter, who is 25, is with child. I don't recall any of the conversation that followed but I began to think of my own great-grandfather, who I never met, who sported a pipe in every family photo I've seen. I wondered what he smoked in that pipe and decided it was likely a burley, perhaps even Carter Hall. So, trying to get in touch with my own inner great grandpa, I've spent the day smoking bowl after bowl of Carter Hall. In the end I can't say that I've gained any significant insight into what it was like to be a great grandfather or a pipe smoker at the beginning of the 20th century, but I can tell you that I'd kill for a bowl of Three nuns right now.

Puffing mundane, but delicious, Dunhill Flake. And listening to the Blue Angels. I don't have to strain my ears. My home is five miles west of Miramar Marine Air Station, and the Angels are practicing for their air show this weekend. They're often right over my home as they turn for a pass over the base – and put the throttle to the metal. It's LOUD – and I love it! I can step out my door and watch.

The Angels are awesome. As they bank, in tight formation, the sun glints off all of their wings at the same instant.

Amazingly, these guys don't wear g-suits. Reason being that the automatic inflation control could disrupt their position in their very tight formation. Instead, the pilots have developed the ability to tense their leg and abdominal muscles to prevent blackout resulting from blood drainage.

Wonderful to see – and hear. Of course, some protest the noise – even though the base, and the annual airshow, was here long before they were.

Congrats !!Warren Pugsley. If it helps I'm smoking a bowl of 3 nuns now just for you.Course,it's your fault if I get hooked on it,
Lol,Pretty good stuff right there ! I've been thinking on my Grandfather on my mom's side.We got into a closet that has been
closed off for over ten-fifteen years, and I came across a grey Fedora. Now I have a drak grey Fedora and a brown Royal
Stetson Fedora that I wear in cooler temperatures. So I was kidding with my BIL about stealing the one we found in that
closet.Turns out that hat was my Grandfathers, and my Sister gave it to me.So,after work I promptly doffed "my" hat went to
get gas in the car and then Lowes, everybody kept smiling and nodding to me.And not in a sarcastic "your retarded" way.
It was like everyone shared that thought of days gone by.It was kind of nice.I can't say Grampa ever smoked anything,
cept my hide the day I was late getting back and we missed church, yeah,I had that one coming. But having his hat is almost
stepping back in time.So in Honor of you and all the rest of us Gramps,I am going to light up another bowl of Three Nun.
Thanks Warren !!!

Congratulations!

Normally I won't smoke anything until it has at least a year of age on it, but was so anxious to try this, Russ Ouellette's Acadian VaPer It's one of those one shot, when it's gone it's gone blends. A bit pricey at $20 per tin, but after reading the description I had to try it. I'll leave the reviews and descriptive terms to those with a more developed palate than mine, but will say this is the most unusual blend I've ever smoked. It's Perique and yellow Virginia processed in the same method as Perique, so I was expecting peppery spice but what I got was more like red wine, or even mead. A thin ribbon cut, needs no drying, smokes well straight out of the tin. I'm really enjoying this one.

The pipe has darkened considerably over the years, but in bright light there still can be seen some beautiful bird's eye running from the heel up the front of the bowl. If a previous owner hadn't had such a heavy hand with a pipe knife around the inside of the rim it would be a candidate for professional restoration. Still, it's a great smoker and a treasured piece of my Bessai collection.

It's a fine smoke,by that,it's light and airy. The flavors are subtle and not overwhelming.I caught just a hint of citrus
and the grassy flavors were smooth and easy on the draw. The Perique presented as just a nice spicey nip along the
tongue.I would definatly keep this on hand,But have to say I do like Dunhill Flake a bit more.

How does the Match compare?

Much better. It's more of a match for the Murray's rather than the new version, which I am not overly crazy about. Here's my review of the Match:

I’ve compared this to the original (which once was a regular smoke for me) and I'd say this blend is fairly close, but not an exact match. It’s certainly closer than the current DE production by Dunhill, which I consider to be inferior to both the original and the Sutliff Match. The Murray’s version was a little more complex in taste, and had just a little more bright lemon Virginia. The perique is very peppery in both, slightly more plumy here. The brown Virginia is virtually identical: a little grass and earth and some citrus. As much as I liked the Murray’s product, I would say this may be as close as you can get these days. A little more sprinkling of citrusy, spicy floral lemon Va., and it’d virtually be the same. Because the new version is different from the Murray’s, which is what the Match attempted to copy, I would not consider them to be similar. The proportion of ingredients in the new version is different, and the shag cut is as well.

The Murray’s version of DE was one of the very few blends m'lady openly complained about. When they quit making it, she was very happy. A couple of years back, I tried the Match for the first time. Five minutes after I started smoking it, she came back to the studio and said, "Are you smoking that crap again? I thought they quit making it." Telling me that she recognized the smell after several years just struck me kinda funny. That, besides the taste, amplified my assessment that the Match is close indeed.

I gave the Murray's version four stars. Couldn't do that for the new release, which is a two star blend.
