I've never smoked a hookah – wonder if anyone on the forum has.
I know there's at least a couple hookah smokers on here. Can't remember who tho.
I would never smoke one. The whole apparatus looks too much like some elaborate bong to me. ...either a bong or the ultimate Rube Goldberg smoking contraption. That and the hoses and mouthpieces and all that just gross me out. It's enough to keep the airway in a pipe clean, and I see what gunk I get out of it after just one smoke. Imagine what filth must be hiding in those hoses :( :doublepuke: Not to mention, I generally lean toward non-aromatic or minimally flavored tobacco. Molasses soaked, fruity, berry, bananna-gummybear surprise shisha tobacco sounds kind of nasty to me.
Burning some G&H Brown Irish X in a Savinelli
-- edit --
Amazing the difference a pairing makes...
Tried pairing the Irish X with an Atwater Vanilla Java porter. Nasty. Neither the beer nor the tobacco were doing each other any favors whatsoever. Put the beer back in the fridge for later and poured some strong coffee with a little cream and sliced off a piece of earthy, creamy cheese made by a local farmer.
What a difference.
This tobacco is earthy like a cigar, peppery but not overly so, and only slightly sweet. Lakeland essence in this one is so faint that I wonder if I'm just imagining it simply because this is a G&H blend and I know it's usually there. Both the coffee and the cheese compliment the baccy well and the cheese brings out a creaminess in the tobac that I didn't notice before. The earthiness in the cheese and also in the smoke go very well together. I'm going to put my feet up and enjoy the rest of the bowl... may need another slice of cheese or two :)

I've been to a couple hookah bars and have smoked it more than a handful of times.
The flavors are excellent. There are some amazing profiles that you can only get from hookah. There is no gurgle at all, the smoke is cooled through the water, but has 0 effect on the draw or the mouthfeel. It makes for the coolest smoke I've ever had, and eliminates all and any tongue bite.
I see no link to bongs or drugs with it, because I've never met someone that uses it for such a thing.
The only downside, and really the reason I don't own one probably, is because of the fact that you have to inhale the smoke. The only way to really enjoy it is through deep, lung, inhalation. I'm just not cool with that being an ex cigarette smoker.

G&H London Cabbie, a sample from a friend who smuggled it back from London. A nice VA-Per with some Lakeland flavor in there Nothing to risk incarceration over.
Tewksbury Celtic Blend, part of a mini cluster bomb from our friend Aguineapig. Very nice slightly sweetened English.
Some of my most recent pressed flake - a tobacco salad containing cigar scraps, Tobias' surprise (from our friend Tobias Lutz), fire-cured dark air, and latakia, among other things. Flavor's not bad, and it's pretty strong - I could dual market this as a laxative :)

Trying the fabled Esoterica Stonehaven (Via Bruck-- Thanks!!), I adore Burleys and just had to try this. Packed a musket ball in a Country Gent with a freehand stem. What struck me right from the charring light was how mild this is. I am a regular smoker of C&D Burleys like haunted bookshop, pegasus, morley's best, and others like Semois. Very strong, rich, cigar like Burleys. This is very different. Mild, smells of something like apricot in the bag and on the first light. Ironically (and, perhaps, sacrilegiously) from a Burley perspective it reminds me more of something like PA or Velvet when the Burley comes though.. The Virginias and special processing make it much more complex, sweet, etc though. I was concerned about how moist the flakes were-- but no gurgles, or really any moisture at the bottom of the bowl, with a reasonable drying time (a little over 30 minutes) so I think this was water moist, not PG/humectant moist.
Next I will try it in a briar and see how that changes things. I like it so far, but not hysterically-- I don't suddenly feel the need to sell everything I own and sit at the computer all day waiting or it to come in stock =P

A decent sized bowl of Stonehaven that my buddy Bruck gifted me....THANKS!!!
Surprised how mellow it is. Really reminds me of ODF with the toasty burley notes. The VA is light a floral in profile. I'm smoking it a little wet though, it probably needed a good 20 minutes more drying for my tastes. Still, even with my power puffubg, no tongue bite whatsoever. All in all excellent quality leaf...I understand the demand for it.

This evening I am having a bowl of Drew Estate Gatsby Luxury Flake in an extra large Rossi freehand.:pipe: Today I got my order from "Pipes and Cigars" including the "Gatsby Flake". I ordered this tobacco to round out my order to qualify for free shipping. I have not ordered any tobacco for more than a year; in the last year I have been primarily interested in cigars.:) When I first started back with cigars and the pipe in 2009 and joined the old "Puff Forum" there was an old timer who knew that I had retired an had a limited money source for tobacco and he suggested that I should concentrate on tobacco instead of cigars for the first few years because he felt that the bans on cigarettes that there would be restrictions on tobacco worst than cigars.:concern: So I did just that and it was a pleasure looking at my jars of Stonehaven and Penzance that I had gotten when it was still possible to order;:santa: but I will admit that in my early years of smoking cigars from "Thompsons Cigars" was not a great time, but it did allow me to eventually understand and enjoy good quality cigars. So this evening it was especially enjoyable to view my many jars of tobacco that I love.:chicken: In reference to this evening my Gatsby Flake seems to be enjoyable and I am topping off this smoke with an ice cold mug of "Guinness Draught" brew and life is well.:beerchug:

I just opened a 50g tin of Fribourg & Treyer Special Brown Flake – 17 months of age on it. The tin note is tart, even sour, but the smoke is delicious. The judiciously-applied topping is quite unusual: said to be rum-flavored. Could be, but I'd never have guessed rum. Like all of the F&T Virginia flakes that I've tried, the tobacco is excellent. I recommend SBF as a nice change-of-pace Virginia.
When I was a college student on a tight budget, I used to buy "Rum Crook" cigars at the drugstore. They were inexpensive, and I found them to be tasty – they definitely had rum flavor! In those days, most Midwestern drugstores carried an assortment of pipes, pipe tobacco, cigars, snuff, etc. Those days are gone.

A briarful of Tewksbury Single Malt, part of a little mailbomb from our friend Aguineapig.
It's not too bad, slightly sweet with a hint of whiskey and some caramel undertones. I shan't fall in love with it though - Tewksbury is in Colorado, and their website says they're suspending online sales of their custom blends due to the new FDA regs.

This morning I was up at the crack of dawn, not really the cat knocked over the dish soap and the noise woke me.
Anyway,so when I headed out to work,I grab my 1950's Monterey and loaded some Captain Black original, and grabbed
my pouch with a spare pipe and Milans Butter Rum.So after loading two trailers full of,,,,well honestly JUNK,I finally
call it a day a little after 5pm.On the way home I slip my pipe out and get the tobacco pouch opened and did a
quick codger stuff for a half bowl of Butter Rum.I lit that baby up and was just putting the tamper down when
I noticed that I was doing just under 55 in a 45.So what I live in the sticks,Right,There was a sheriff's deputy
right behind me.He followed me for about a mile and a half and just when I need to relight ,,,,he was gone.
I personally think he was following the aroma and when there was a break it that, the trance lifted and he
went home.

You do know that you don't need water to make coffee, you can eat it dry.Just ask "George of the Jungle".
Hot black coffee (mud) with a bowl of London Mixture.Still paying for loading all that crap yesterday.

Actually I munch on dry coffee beans from time to time. They're good. Started with those chocolate covered espresso beans and got to liking just the bean without the chocolate.
