Gawith and Hoggarth's Brown Flake Scented in a no-name bent bulldog. Bought this pipe in 1982. The shopkeeper hinted that it might be a Charatan/Ben Wade reject, but that he could not say so. He carried Ben Wade and Charatan pipes and the shapes of the various no-name pipes were identical to the shapes of some of the Ben Wade and Charatan pipes.

Enjoying the first pipeful of my second tin of Solani 633 in my Kirsten Mariner. This is GREAT tobacco. Its Perique component is more subdued than is the case with Escudo – just right, IMO – and the Virginia component is top notch. After I finished the first tin of my original ten tin order, I immediately ordered ten more – but should've ordered fifteen more.

Someone nearly hit a very large dog in front of my house, poor pooch ran to the side of my garage. The driver stopped, was concerned, and said that the dog was a huge rottweiler. No rotty's live nearby so I called animal control but no answer. Pooch started sniveling so I called the cops. The concerned driver was brave, standing in my driveway trying to coax him out. I got a flashlight and (with some trepidation) went by the garage and shone the light on the dog.

It wasn't a huge rottweiler, it was my neighbor's 9-month old Neapolitan Mastiff, Shadow, who's already 130-lbs.

Called the police to tell them that all was well.

Tab,

Everything looks Sasieni, circa late 1940s to mid 1950s. The large '7' was added to '15' stamp and this fancy font I've seen on other Sasieni pipes of the era. I go by manufacturing clues and the shape is Sasieni, based on the first pic you showed, as well. If you have the time, can you take a couple of pics of the bowl. I'm not a Sasieni collector but I know their manufacturing pretty well.

Just opened an 8-oz vacuum bag of Gawith Hoggarth Louisiana Flake from March, 2015. Smells lovely.

Loading up a 1984 Ser Jacopo L1 Panel, smooth saddle that's the first panel they ever made, based on my design drawing. It was never stained, seemed to have no grain at the time but has darkened to show a rich full grain (sorry no pics - I remain pic challenged). Elite smoker. The guys at Jacopo thought it to be a toss-away and used a bit that had not properly fit a Castello repair. The remnant outline of the Castello bar can still be seen on the side of the bit. This is among the last of the original, regular line, Jacopo logo pipes (1982-1984), small coral dot surrounded by silver that was later changed to the simple coral red dot (1985-1997) before the silver inlaid "J" (1997-present). I took this pipe immediately after it was made, less than 90 minutes from concept to smoking.

With water, no cubes, on a rainy night.

The # is mismarked, the 1372 is normally a chubby billiard saddle. I overpaid at $64 but this fine smoker has made it a good buy.

I picked up a fair amount of that but I don't care at all for the Lakeland scent in it. It was all I could taste. I jarred it up in a quart mason jar and put the lid disk on upside down so it doesn't seal. I've found that if I let a Lakeland scented tobacco slowly dry out and then rehydrate it, it takes a lot of that perfumey scent away. I've also got jars of Rum Flake and Bob's Chocolate Flake stored the same way. I check on them every couple of months to see how they're progressing.

Oh, almost forgot: I had a very small quantity of left-in-the-pipe Sam Gawith Chocolate Flake in a MM freehand this afternoon. Hi Bill,

The Lakeland essence seems to differ smoker to smoker. G&H Brown Flake has too much for me but SG 1792 doesn't.

I like all my flakes, but especially Gawith Hoggarth, to have moisture where it makes the flavors pop, so I never dry them. My chunk of Louisiana Flake just awakened from its vacuum sleep is at an excellent rh now but I'll need to humidify it or it will become more dry than I like it.

Speaking of that 2015 Gawith Hoggarth Louisiana Flake and its current optimal rh, I'm about to smoke some in a 1950s Barling's Make Ye Olde Wood #251 (smooth) taper billiard.

Upshall made some large pipes, used great wood too. We'll be going with Kennedy to the old Upshall workshop in Tilshead just to have a look.

Actually, I think Barling, post-WWII made their best pipes. I believe that your Barling #249 is from this period. The Algerian Civil War (1954) closed the Barling owned saw mill. Barling was unique in owning their own mill, thus controlling their briar supply as well as having a proprietary formula for rod vulcanite from NY Hamburger (Dunhill had their own formula). I've always said that Barling controlled their materials and production, 'From ground to mouth'.

When the Algerian briar was no longer available, Barling turned to Otto Braun who kept them supplied with top shelf briar (I believe mostly Greek). Aside from the tragedy of any civil war, the impact on Barling was negligible if any at all because the Algerian fields were depleted and the new sources were fresher.

Barling's shaping and consistency in process and manufacturing reached their peak in the 1950s. Their range of sizes grew to accommodate the American Market. The prices on the old Barlings can be prohibitive but their quality remained very high through early 1962 and in some cases a little later. Quality declined when they stopped hand making bowl and stem and further when they began to buy bowls from Charatan and Cadogan (GBD and Comoy), but even a later 1960s Barling is the equal of these brands.

I've bought some fine Barlings that were made after 1960 (when conventional wisdom incorrectly believed that they quality fell off the table) at some very reasonable prices, including the pipe below that has given me over 30 years of excellent smoking and it's every bit a classic Barling in quality.

I fill very loose at the bottom. With the long GH flakes, I split them length wise, press an end into the bowl and let it fold up into the pipe to about 2/3rd. I press lightly and expect a loose draw (it presses down to about 60%). Then I fold and fill the rest. I get a solid char light, arrange the over-spill, light once or twice more and Bob's your uncle.

To my palate, GH makes the best flakes, very much like they were in the 1970s when I first tried them. Big flavor, more coarse and in your face than Samuel Gawith, but that's how I like 'em.

2015 Dunhill Royal Yacht in a 1960s Castello Epoca (I thought 1970s, Castello loving friend says 1960s), with Cafe du Monde (Chicory) coffee with a dash of cream.

Kudos to the current manufacturer of Royal Yacht (MacBarren?). Different from the original (I first smoked in the late 1960s), but a lovely tobacco in it's own right. Rich, sweet and nice shades and nuance, this is the best Danish made tobacco I've had in a long time.

Yesterday I finished off my sample of Hearth and Home AJ's Vaper in my Savinelli.

I was using the Savinelli for English Blends, but have not been smoking them lately.
Every time I want to have a bowl I reach for Vapers or Aros.
Not what I was expecting when I first started smoking pipes.

I don't smoke my pipes as much as I used to. This past winter was cold and long and I took refuge in snuff to avoid the cold. Now that it's porch weather again(though it did snow a bit yesterday), I haven't backed off on the snuff and picked up the pipe again.

Last night I had a small bowl of Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake in a Dr G. It's not well aged HV, but it's good.

No. I'd rate the nic-hit as mild to medium, slightly more to medium than mild. But, I'm comparing it to ropes and other real heavy stuff.

OK.....maybe it's just me. I was getting ready to start putting it in baggies and hanging out on the street corner.....

Bill,

It may be that time of year because my Louisiana Flake has been lights out good the past 10-12 days.

2015 Gawith Hoggarth Louisiana Flake in a 1950s Barlng's Make Ye Olde Wood #252 Fossil (sandblast), saddle billiard.

Mainly smoke VA flakes in smooth, thick walled billiard (type) bowls but this is a sandblast that I've not smoked in a while so there's little ghosting.

The brightness is subdued but the complement of nuanced flavors is apparent. Not as sweet as in the #251 (taper smooth from the same era), but a little deeper.
