The Red Odessa is pretty good-- It's Red VA substituted for the Burley. I suspect the VA compliments the other leaf better than Burley would, but that's just a guess as I've never tried the Burley version.

Slowly whittling away at my "want to try" list - burning some Sam Gawith Full Virginia Flake. I've been procrastinating on this one as I couldn't bring myself to pay $14 for a little tin, but resolved to pick one up with my next P&C order. Lo and behold, it's on sale for $9, and now also available in bulk at $4.25/oz. I picked up an ounce, but it certainly won't be my last! This is good stuff, probably the best VA flake I've tried so far.

It's pretty damp still, so it took a while to get it to stay lit. I let it sit open for a few hours, but that apparently wasn't enough. I think I'll let it sit out overnight tonight.

Lakeland Dark and Lakeland Light used to be budget tobaccos, sort of like Pensioners Mix is, from GH and came in one pound bags. I hadn't seen them in years until they came out with the Dark in a tin.

This was the Samuel Gawith version, which is 1792 Flake without tonquin. I love it. Earthy with a touch of bitterness, like the love child of ODF and Tambolaka. I am...besotted.

Vermont Freehand/Steve is in the cob stem racket now? I'll have to check out his offerings.

I bought 6 stems from him for a whopping $32 shipped. Mind you, they were all "blanks" and I had to use my rotary tool to machine the tenons. Each one took about 15 minutes to do properly, and they aren't as sexy as a FS, but I basically got six for the price of one.

Oh Ok. I thought he was doing the cutting of tenons for cobs now and maybe personalizing them with his mark. I have used blanks & blank stock from Steve before. He also sells a nice little slot tool for finishing the inside of the mouthpiece tip really nice. If you ever get a cob that has a slight gurgle, take a counter sink bit to the tenon and the gurgle should go away. On a few stems, I have also opened up the airway a slight bit too.

It's nice and satisfyingly full-bodied. I can see it being an all-day blend for some. A good amount of nicotine, a pleasant flavor, and cool smoking. I think it would also be a good recommendation to someone transitioning to pipes from cigarettes, as the flavor has cigarette notes, but in a good way.

Well I'm kind of celebrating right now with a bowl of Old Joe Krantz in a White Briar. Tuesday evening I had dinner and then sat down to have a bowl. Next thing I know, I'm in the back of an ambulance and didn't have a clue why. I guess I had some kind of seizure or reaction to some medicine and my wife called 911 for an ambulance. The whole deal of the paramedics getting there and loading me up is a blank. At the hospital they ran me through the CT Scan and did some drug screening and all checked out OK. Just a pretty weird evening. I must've tensed up pretty good as every muscle on me is sore as hell.....

I wish I knew also. They were scratching their ass as to what it could be. They want me to go for all these tests, but I'm going to pass. If it happens again, I may do the tests. The way Obama Care screwed my insurance this year, my great grandson will be still paying on the bill.....
