In-laws and that side of the family are gone... It's still about 55 out, so I'm taking a bowl of Sam Gawith Medium VF outside, and I'm also taking out the laptop so I can start watching CBGB on Netflix.

Having never heard of this blend, I had to look it up on tobaccoreviews.com. Looks like it's definitely a love-it-or-hate-it blend.
Yeah... It's apparently a recreation of Bing Crosby's custom blend. His voice was a lot smoother than his tobacco.

How does the Medium compare with FVF? I don't see it for sale often.

It's the lighter, brighter, sweeter little sister to FVF. Lots of oat, lemon, and cream. It's a phenomenal tobacco and one that, as you said, isn' available enough.

Ennerdale while I read a fine presentation from The New Yorker on Orson Welles.
As with most film buffs I love Pauline Kael's writings, but I often wondered where her disdain for Welles came from. With so many holding her views as gospel, it's nice to see someone sticking up for the non-Kane works of Welles and helping to point out where Kael went wrong.

Good question. I seem to have an aversion to Burley so it may be that. I found the blend really harsh and cigarette-like. Even just a little snorking and incidental side stream inhaling irritated the hell out of my throat and sinuses. I'd like to try deer tongue in a non-Burley blend but I don't think one exists. I didn't really taste vanilla like people say.

Long ago, in a galaxy far away..... Oops, wrong film
There used to be books, beginning in the early 1970s, that rated films (1 to 4 in 1/2 star increments) with capsule reviews. One of the earliest was by Leonard Maltin (when he was a yung feller).
I began writing alternate reviews on movies that I felt had been dissed. Continued for several years until I was sidetracked by my Magnum Opus, Greatest Worst Movies Ever Made, (no, not bad like, Plan 9 From Outer Space, more like Brain Damage or Bad Taste).
Touch of Evil received negative reviews in the rating guides, 1 to 2 stars (1-1/2 average). I gave it 4-stars (highest) and I wrote a scathing attack on the (lack of) review prowess of aforementioned Mr. Maltin. Of course I never sent it to him but within some years, Mr. Maltin had revisited and given this film 3-1/2 stars. Mind control. Touch of Evil may be the quintessential Film Noir and the opening scene is to die for :).
I didn't believe the hype before I'd seen Citizen Kane, then I saw the film and thought it underrated. Magnificent Ambersons has greatness in it too. Take that Ms. Kael!

I'm holding out hope that we'll get a definitive Magnificent Ambersons as long as someone, somewhere has copious notes from Mr. Welles and the footage still exists.
And, I agree about Touch of Evil!
It wasn't just on paper or behind the camera that he excelled, though. The triumvirate of awesomess that was Welles, Joseph Cotton, and Carol Reed combined to create one of my favorite films and, to me, the epitome of noir: The Third Man.

I gotcha.
The only ones from that list I've had are Nightcap, which is in my top 3 English blends. Great stuff. However, try it as the last bowl of the day. Nightcap is heavy. Once you smoke it, you're done for the day. It is aptly named.
I've also had Billy Budd and it was so so. Not terrible by any means, but not great. It will come to you pretty dry but that's how it is supposed to be.
It's fun experimenting with new pipe tobaccos. Hell, as many of them as there are I don't reckon you'll ever really stop.
A few suggestions.
If you like the Elizabethan Mixture, which I'm nearly certain you will, try Escudo. It's the same type of mixture and is very good as well.
Also, try some Frog Morton Cellar if you get a chance. It's an English blend with a wooden cube from a whisky barrel in the tin. Gives a phenomenal flavor.
If your address was in your profile, you may even find some unexpected goodies showing up at your door out of the blue to try. Hint hint. :pipe:
Happy smoking.

Partly social mores, Touch of Evil was so damned seedy that it was probably repulsive to people in 1958 (and later years) until the idea that a movie should be that way finally hit. Welles lighting made Touch of Evil into a nightmare and that was the intent. David Lynch, Eraserhead, borrowed liberally.
Pete, were these reviews published?
My reviews? Not worth publishing. The Maltin movie guide had capsule reviews so that's what I wrote but I lost them long ago.

I had a mixture of several things I dumped together just for a change.
I had some wet goopy cherry cavendish tobacco from the local drugstore. I mixed that with a straight Virginia blend. Then I dumped about a half a pouch of Paladin Black Cherry in it which is a burley blend. So it's a VA/Burley/cavendish cherry blend. It's actually pretty good. I found the cherry flavoring to be overpowering with the drug store cavendish blend, but mixed with the unflavored VA and the burley it is much better.

Really curious to hear some opinions of this one - let me know what you think when you can breathe! :pipe:
Yes, will do. I could tell it was pretty good, or at least had potential despite my diminished sensitivity. I'll try it again in a week or so. I only got a few bowls' worth from a co-worker, but if it's good, I'll definitely be stocking up.

2015 Mixture #606 (blended 11-15-15) in a 1970s Caminetto Business #104 saddle billiard.
Bill (@EmperorZurg) described tobacco blending (sometimes) to be like hitting a moving target and this mixture was that from the start.
I once saw Ray Floyd (golfer) hit a ball that started straight and then made an abrupt right turn. It went over a line of trees and, with a few bounces, landed on the green. I know that Mr. Floyd was a venerated professional, but that drive convinced me to never touch a gold club again, (not that i really had before), and I thought about how he hit that ball when I blended this mixture and I knew that I'd have to wait to see where it ended up.
I've been smoking #606 steadily since it was blended. It started straight, as the ingredients would suggest, changing subtly over the next three weeks. Today, after 10 additional 10 days, the jar note was nearly spot on (goal).
Smoking it now, (almost finished and about to fire up another bowl), it's gone over the trees and is headed for the green. I have to hope that it doesn't roll past the cup.

It's begun.
Woke up to 8 inches of snow on the ground. It started last night. I went out to pick up some ingredients to make my patented eggnog, as well as some champagne and wine for the upcoming holiday, bits & pieces of other things we needed around the house, and groceries, as well as to hand out some cigars to people on my naughty list. Walking out of one store you could really feel the cold and damp in the air. Walking out of the next you could see some tiny flakes slowly falling. By the time we were walking out of the next the flakes were so big and coming down so hard you couldn't see across the parking lot.
It's always fun driving in the first real snow of the year, I passed two (minor) accidents on my way home and of course my wife was freaking out that we were going to spin out and slide off the edge of the earth... This time of year always makes me wonder: do people forget how to operate their car in the 7-8 months since we last had snow? I swear, every ounce of common sense and any self-preserving driving techniques gained one year are gone the next for at least the first few weeks that snow is on the ground.
Packing an extremely small bowl of Plum Pudding and heading out to shovel the steps. Then we'll see if the sidewalk and driveway are bad enough to justify breaking out the snowthrower.

Really curious to hear some opinions of this one - let me know what you think when you can breathe! :pipe:
You were axing about the Seattle Pipe Club Pike Place. Now that my sinuses are back in working order, I can report that it is a most excellent blend. Sort of like Dunhill Nightcap but cooler, with a bit more of a hardwood note. Those SPC guys really know what they're doing. Smoking it in a meer right now.
SPC Plum Pudding is pretty good too - had some of that the other day.
