Yes, Virginias tend to be sweet and have hints of grass/hay. The Black & Gold is a VA/Cavendish blend, with some light added sweet flavoring.

You may wish to procure some Virginia flakes next time you visit Ted's. Early on in my pipe smoking, which was not all that long ago, I tried some Rattray's VA Flake and that's when the light went on for me - so this is what pipe smoking is all about!

This evening I am having a bowl of Dan's Hamborger Veermaster in my extra large Rossi freehand.:piper: I was digging thru my stash and came across this tobacco and I knew that it was exactly what I was looking for; I had not smoked this tobacco in more than 6 months. I first became acquainted with this tobacco several years ago when Mark (Mooster) was smoking this tobacco day after day for a long time.:banghead: This was during my Puff Forum days. Since my early days of coming back to the pipe I have been following Mark because his tastes in tobacco was so similar to mine. Mark had driven me crazy smoking this tobacco day after day after day. Unfortunately I was not able to procure this tobacco for more than 6 months; it was simply not available.:bawling: This tobacco has a very distinct flavor profile that I like and since those early days I have never been without it. Needless to say this evenings smoke is delicious. I am topping off this smoke with an ice cold mug of "Guinness Draught" brew while listening to Xmas music.:beerchug:

It ain't :) It's not too bad, though. I'd say it's a lighter, fruitier version of Penzance, with less of a Lat hit. So I guess that makes it an entirely different animal.

First in a 1970s Caminetto Business #104 saddle billiard.
Second in a 1963 Barling #6106 sandblast taper billiard.

Accompanied by Ka'anapali Maui Mokha coffee kindly supplied by Wayne (@OnePyroTech).

A couple of ladies (my wife's friends) visited this morning but upon leaving they were unable to start their car. I was called upon only after their battery was starting to run down. Being the great mechanic that I am (I can operated a hand-crank window while driving!), I suggested, pressing the gas pedal to the floor for 5 seconds, releasing and then waiting 5 minutes before trying to start again.

Vroom! It started immediately, just as I had said it would (ok, I said 'might'). The ladies looked at me with puzzlement and admiration. I told them to drive at least 20 minutes, if not more, to give the battery a chance to recharge a bit. They thanked me and drove off.

Of course, if my technique failed, I was SOL because their car blocked the driveway and I wouldn't have been able to give them a jump. As far as what holding the pedal actually does, I just repeated what I'd been told 50 years ago. I think it drains excess gas from the engine (flooded) but cars are a little different these days.

It reminds me of Arthur C. Clarke's Third Law of Prediction;
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

A contemporary Merlin? Not likely as this was my entire bag of trick (singular) but in magic you never tell. Ho-hum.

A contemporary Merlin? Not likely as this was my entire bag of trick (singular) but in magic you never tell. Ho-hum.

I'd say you were just lucky. In a modern, fuel injected car pressing the accelerator pedal with the key off does absolutely nothing... save for the (very) off chance that the Throttle Position Sensor is going bad and the brush was in a bad spot on the little carbon resistor strip, thereby putting a cold engine into a false 'clear flood' mode. This is not very likely though. If it's a 'drive by wire' system like most (or all) of the newest vehicles, it even does less than that.

If the engine is actually flooded (even the old carbureted engines) you need to hold the pedal to the floor while attempting to start it in order to clear the flood. Pressing the accelerator doesn't drain anything.

Letting it sit for 5 or 10 minutes sometimes does work though as it can allow some of the flood to weep out of the cylinders past the piston rings.

Prolly not smoking anything today. Still in deer camp recovery mode.

Pete

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a 1995 with a carburetor but that old, who knows - maybe the throttle position sensor does have a bad spot at closed throttle. A cold engine certainly wouldn't start in clear flood mode since 'clear flood' pretty much shuts off the fuel to the injectors.

So far so good. I like the taste of it. Wish I had more than a couple bowls worth. I'm curious to see how the prototype matches up. Cherry Coke from Wendy's is my drink. Watching the news, but will go back to work before long.

It was in the bunch of pipes I sold recently. The metal shank inside was broken, so I kept it for myself. It has "Short Snorter" on one side, and "Imported Briar" on the other. It's 4" long.

Mixture No. 79. Plop that topping on a higher quality tobbacco and I'd be happy to put it in my daily rotation.

There. I said it. I find the topping delightful. "I like Mixture No. 79." That statement belongs to history now. Carve it on my headstone.

That said, I don't think I'll buy any more of this. It's a paradox but to me this and many other aromatic/mass-market blends are dominated by what I find to be a flavorless, dull, boring, and airy taste that I can only contribute to burley. Maybe it's just my body chemistry, but out of the ones I've tried Carter Hall has been the only OTC to be, for lack of a better word, substantial.

It's not all burley that does this to me, though. I like University Flake, Jackknife Plug, Orlik's DSK, any of the GH&Co's that use burley, Solani's ABF, Barbary Coast...

Had a fruitful meeting with two fine folks from Laudisi (Savinelli/Cornell & Diehl). Didn't smoke, but I'm saying this now: watch out for their new pipe tobacco line for BriarWorks, specifically Back Down South and Bacon Old Fashioned.

I'll also say this: Sav's new 311 KS is a pretty little pipe. They had one in the Spring finish and man-oh-man, I was dangerously close to taking it home with me.

Anyway, now that I'm back home & dinner is taken care of, and the weather is so decent all things considered, I'm headed outside with some Irish Flake in the Savinelli Author.

Took a while off of the pipe. A month or two, I think.
For some reason, cigars have been calling to me, not so much the pipe.

Decided to dive back in and I wondered why I stopped. Heh.
Over the weekend I smoked a bowl of JB Hayes Commonwealth in my MM Cob on the way to a friends house and back.
Last night had an H&H AJ's Vaper in my first pipe, a basket pipe from Italy.

Neither blew me a way, but they were still nice.
I will be cleaning my pipes this weekend, so I am really ready to get back to it.

Now I just have to figure out which cigar to have while I clean them. Heh Heh.

Broke out a bit of my whiskey kake. I'm realizing that the ingredients I used were a bit inferior but given some weeks to breath the blend has become smokeable, no doubt. If it had a touch more body I think I'd be happy with it.

When finished it'll be time for Newminster 403. Tasty!

Hopefully everyone has a nice weekend planned. I have my wife's side of the family intruding - ahem - visiting tomorrow for a gift exchange, and then, despite there being not a single snowflake in sight and temps hitting the unseasonably high upper 50s, I'll pack my wife and a Thermos of my Parisian-inspired hot chocolate into the car so that we can drive around at look at the Christmas lights.

Packed a big bowl of Stokkebye's Dutch slices this morning, on the way to rushing out the door to fill in with a friend cutting timbers (his business partner couldn't make it). I like this stuff, it's a nice strength level, and tasty (good outdoors too).

Having just about destroyed my taste for tobacco by trying a bowl C&D Crooner I decided to restore my faith with a bowl of Pete's NeverBend Professor blend. Now all is right with the world again. :thumb:

No offense to anyone who likes it, but Crooner may well be the worst thing I've ever smoked - possibly including even Mixture No. 79!

I know some people do... It's probably the burley more than anything else - I just don't like burley-forward blends. I'm curious to try deer tongue in something without it, if such a thing exists. If I had more than just a small sample of a 2-3 bowls, I'd send it your way!

The stuff's not bad. Mrs. Bruck likes it in RYO ciggies (but guess who does the rolling) :)

Having never heard of this blend, I had to look it up on tobaccoreviews.com. Looks like it's definitely a love-it-or-hate-it blend.

My guess that it is you. Do you roll them by hand or do you use the tubes? Amsterdam is right tasty in a pipe too.

I use a rolling mat - looks like a miniature sushi rolling mat - and loose papers. Works pretty well. I had to laugh when I was watching videos on how to use the mat, the presenters all enunciated the word "tobacco" euphemistically. I'm thinking wait, I really am using this for tobacco!
