Honestly, I won't! If things turned sour and I was only able to keep one tobacco, it would be Ennerdale.

I was speaking to JimInks today about the continued high quality of the Gawith companies (Samuel and Hoggarth) products but if I had to choose my favorite tobacco manufacturer, it would be Gawith Hoggarth. I'm almost immune to the aroma of their top sauce until it hits a threshold where it's too much for me and Ennerdale and Best Brown fit into that category, so I smoke them rarely, but I admire the quality.

Gawith Hoggarth, Louisiana Flake, might well be my desert island flake (currently manufactured tobaccos). The differences over time (35 years in my experience) in the quality of the GH products is negligible, great then and now. Given the difficulty in sourcing quality leaf in an age of shrinking tobacco crops (and cigarette giants buying it all up), I am humbled at their feet (and thankful) for their skill and the exquisite pleasure of their tobaccos. (:sniffle:)

Morning JIm,

Just to correct the URL, Reddog Pipes - Home (http://WWW.RedDogPipes.Com). The URL that you listed however, Browser Fail: Icehouse (http://www.RedDog.Com) is best looking error page that I've ever seen - you think it has to be a real site and keep clicking on it, wanting it to work.

You hit the nail on the head, Pete. I've only been abusing (like a drug) Ennerdale for a few years but it is of the utmost quality, as is every other tobacco - pipe and nasal snuff - that I've tried from the House of G&H. By far my favorite producer - by far, as in miles ahead - which means nothing to anyone not named Andy, but considering my love affair with Germain and Sam Gawith and Pease it's something, right?

On that note, I had a big bowl of Ennerdale today during a two hour conference call. Stuffed my trusty and E-dedicated Hackert cob to the brim, a thoughtful gift from Mister Moo a few years back, and puffed away. This pipe has served me well, very well, and every time I break it out I'm reminded of the NC-based bovine who sent it to me.

Nothing burning right now, but Alligator Gar's post in the Blending Experiment thread got me thinking, and this thread gets the most play...

He certainly makes Star of the East sound like a great blend. I've been hoping to find a bulk Oriental-forward that I could keep around to save some $$$. Something very incense-y, tea-like, musty, bright but hearty, etc. etc. etc. An "exotic" blend that brings a variety that's missing from my rotation. That said, it looks like SofE is 50% Lat which would lead me to believe it's not what I want. I have more heavy Lats than I'll probably ever smoke.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Oddly enough, the question of how much is too much Lat goes unanswered in SoTE. The lat in that blend is not annoying (bearing in mind my tin was three YO.) The Star is the Oriental(s). You hit it on the head. Musty and incens-y. That "must" is what sold me. I'd share some but I smoked it all and gave my replacement tin to a buddy. I think I'm going to smoke a bowl of the Skiff you gave me to celebrate taste.

Nachman mentioned Skiff. I'll have to try a bowl again because while I found it very good - it's actually a great "old fashioned" English blend to my tastebuds - it didn't have quite enough ooomph to push it to 4 stars.

Seems like that's what I'll take to work tomorrow to give it another go!

Another fine tobacco not available here in the States, a la Ilsted's Own Golden Flake. It's a shame, really. I would give half of our Lat blends for just a handful of the seriously tasty VA flakes sold overseas.

...stuffed my trusty and E-dedicated Hackert cob to the brim, a thoughtful gift from Mister Moo a few years back, and puffed away. This pipe has served me well, very well, and every time I break it out I'm reminded of the NC-based bovine who sent it to me.Funny, that. I have no idea who you are; got a bit of brain disease last year and it cost me, amongst other things, a lot of my memory - big blank spots.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/lx9n988lery4dnp/IMG_20151029_114327.JPG?dl=1

In fact I was enjoying my Hackert last week enough that I bothered to take a picture (above) of it. Reviewing visuals each day help me remember new things and often kicks old memories back in place. A day or two later I was looking at the Hackert picture and wondered if I didn't have two of them; went looking around for quite a while and finally decided I only ever had one. SO, thank you! Nice to find out there was a second pipe and someone is still enjoying it. This is the lighter side of brain damage. It appears I have sent a lot of pipes to people, which is good. By way of balance, I keep finding pipes and have no idea when or where they came from. :D

So, glad you like it - they really are tremendous pipes. Only wish I knew who to thank.

That's hard to hear, Dan. I'm sorry for the troubles but glad you're still around!

We used to converse on Puff quite a bit. As I was just getting bit by the pipe bug you sent me a welcome package of the Hackert, a handful of great blends to try, a Cuban cigar or two, and my very first bouchon de semois which was an eye-opening experience (I need to get more of them!). In exchange I sent you an antique cow salt & pepper set! You were extremely generous with your tobacco, obviously, but also wisdom and wit which was invaluable, and for that I thank you.

Been home all day (sick kiddo) and haven't known what to do with myself. So I stirred up some trouble on Facebook and then started writing a paper on the Arkansas prison system. I took the computer to the balcony where I continued to work on my paper (while checking the bum ever so often of course) and had some Orlik Golden Slice and a cup of coffee.

Then I got a rabbit stew simmering on the stove that smells amazing. I swear its only been a few hours and I'm turning into a housewife.

An hour or so later I had some Lane 1Q (the first aromatic I've smoked in probably 2 months) white still working on the paper and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Well, I'd say my blend is pretty good at promoting tranquility. ;) But given the proportion of it in the blend, and how much fits in a single bowl, it probably adds up to less nicotine than smoking a cigar. A single large cigar has nearly as much tobacco as a full tin of pipe tobacco.

I got a couple oz bulk to try.
I like it in that there's no soapy tasting topping whatsoever.
I don't like it in that there's much less of the chocolate flavor. It's almost nonexistent.

I've only tried one bowl so far tho...

Sticking with Squadron Leader today, but in a larger bowl. Can't say I'll ever go back to smoking it in a smaller pipe, it just didn't provide any flavor that way. This is a bit spicier, a bit mustier, a light touch of the Lats are coming through... Much better.

A point I have to remind myself of when buying pipe tobacco.

But I don't think it's apples to apples though - I seem to take in a lot more vitamin N from a bowl of firm pipe tobacco, than from an equivalent amount of tobacco from a cigar, say ~1.5" or so. & while I can smoke a large cigar over a couple hours, I could never smoke a whole tin of pipe tobacco in that time.

where you get yours?

The relatively small sample I am working with came from someone who asked to remain anonymous. However, with some internet savvy detective work one may be able to find several potential sources. Mapacho is typically made into a snuff (called Rapé) for shamanic healing rituals in Peru, and can only be purchased direct from Peru, as it's not an export item. Here's a site I found with a quick search:

Peruvian Mapacho (http://www.shamansmarket.com/mapacho-1055.html)

I'd consider $98 for 2 lb of the stuff an amazing deal.

Mac Baren HH Mature Virginia in bent Mariner. I can see why this stuff was discontinued. It was supposedly made with 22 different tobaccos, but all I got was some sour Orientals, bitey Burley and generic VA. It was hard to keep lit, but nevertheless burned really fast. Hoping the HH Syrian is better, since I bought a tin recently.
