Continuing my VA flake journey, I'm smoking a bowl of FVF right now. Wow! This is wonderful stuff! Possibly my favorite so far in this genre.
VA flakes are what woke me up to "real" pipe smoking. Prior to that I had been smoking mostly goopers and wondering what all the fuss was about :) First time I broke a flake up into a bowl and lit it, it was, okay, I get it now.

Some of us were born to blend.
It's my personal compulsion that I just can't leave well enough alone :)
As it happens, I probably should have in this case. The silver river's pretty good by itself but so far I haven't been able to improve on it.
And on a side note, I just chased a possum off the deck. Dang, those thing are ugly!

Have you tried layering the tobaccos rather than blending them, JohnnyFlake told me about this and it makes the bowl more interesting.
As to opossums, I took one on a ride over forty miles away in a sealed bucket and 100 degree weather, little peckerhead was
home before I was. Only thing I can figure is he crawled into the undercarriage of my truck and caught a ride. Now I just kill em

I've mostly been enjoying latakia blends. The first few VAs I tried, I thought "meh." But these flakes are really making me "get" it - and especially that FVF.

Layering - no, I haven't tried that, good idea! For my next trick, I'm going to try pressing it in a flake with some bright and burley, maybe with a little molasses or rum.
& if I see the possum again I'm going to have to introduce it to a shovel. I'm just glad Mrs. Bruck wasn't here to see it - she'd never set foot on the deck again!

Replaced the cube cut with Five Brothers and Red Ribbon, the 5B is smoother and more well mannered, probably due to its age. Stuffed it in a Sav 606 Brown Gator I recently picked up.

After years of trying to rid or reduce my raccoon problem I discovered that there's a secret criminal organization, La Cosa Procione or the Raccoon Mafia. They assigning turf, areas where a battle tested individual is in control. They sift through your garbage with the skill of a seasoned papparazzi and they challenge you to find a way to keep them out. Get rid of your current raccoon boss and by the next night you have a new boss. Move them 40 miles away and they're back before morning.
They even have a school: Raccoon Diploma (http://stanfordflipside.com/2012/11/raccoon-receives-diploma-leftover-pizza/)
There is no relief, just the occasional respite on a morning when you don't find your trash cans tipped and your garbage strewn up and down the road.

Years back when I was living in sin with my would be wife I worked 2nd shift. We had a downstairs apartment in a split house that was towards the end of a quiet road, so when I got home at 11:30PM on nice nights I would grab a cigar and unwind on the front porch. One evening I was doing such and I just happened to look all the way down the street to a well-lit intersection in time to see something four-legged and big moving around. It started to come my way just as a car turned on to our street, and I realized then, under the headlights, that it was the biggest racoon in the history of racoons. I'm pretty sure he had a Guiness World Record plaque in his right paw.
Anyway, the driver noticed it and slowed down, but the racoon kept huffing and puffing and waddling its way towards me. The driver eventually sped up a bit and began to pass it and as he did the critter took a 90 degree turn to run underneath a parked car. It's a good plan, ducking for cover, but I don't think the racoon was self-aware in regards to his size.
THUMP.
It was so big it couldn't fit underneath the parked car. I should add that it wasn't trying to climb under one of those 1400lb European "cars" that are as small as a matchbox. No, this was a standard sedan.
THUMP.
It tried a second time. I burst out laughing. Thinking quickly, probably to save any further embarrassment, it ran around the front of the car and disappeared into a side yard.

THUMP
:) :)
Raccoons love to show off their awards and yours would have carried his Guiness plaque everywhere, fer sure. I think they hold parties, have a few drinks and pass the awards around. I named a raccoon Greyhead, (top of his head was all grey). Twice he broke the trap and escaped within a couple of hours of being caught. Third time I put a carabiner on the trap as soon as he was caught. The professional trapper estimated his weight at over 25 pounds and yes, he broke the third trap.
...I used to have a raccoon that would come up on the porch and eat with my cats, I quit feed the cats on the porch when my son went out one night and thought he was petting a cat and found out it was the coon.
Glad that your son wasn't bitten (as Robin Byrd was - my link to Raccoon Attack below). Raccoons love cat food. I know some silly folks (in this neighborhood) who feed the raccoons cat food believing that it deters them from trashing their garbage. Wishful thinking and they forget about the secret code of La Cosa Procione, "Crash, Smash and Trash" and to drive silly humans crazy and cats from their turf. Evil organization it is! The government should do a cost analysis on lost production.

If you haven't already, jar up some of the FVF and then lose it for a few years. I have a gigantic mason jar tucked away that I filled with a box or two of the stuff back in 2011. You'd be convinced I'm growing diamonds, not storing tobacco.
I certainly need to do that.
I'm trying to slowly build up a cellar of pipe tobacco. I've got some SJF from the inaugural group buy we did when the Bum first got started, a little bit of straight VA tobacco and a little English stuck back. If I could stop buying cigars, I'd be able to build a cellar faster.

I'm working on the same thing! Except I've managed to put a halt to the cigar purchasing.
I do need to put up a couple more boxes of FVF... and St. James flake... and Navy flake (not to mention a lot more that I'd like to store up)
Little by little, we'll get there!

A disappointing bowl of my whiskey pipe. It smells great, like you're sitting around a campfire roasting marshmallows with a drunk in the background, but the flavor just isn't there... Not sure if I should just walk away from this - trying my hand at aros - and concentrate on normal blends, or keep at it.

You probably have to use an extract. I'd imagine whiskey itself probably doesn't have enough of the actual whiskey flavor to stick around after the alcohol and water evaporate off. Maybe try something like this --> Amazon.com : OliveNation Bourbon Whiskey Extract 4 oz. : Natural Flavoring Extracts : Grocery & Gourmet Food (http://www.amazon.com/OliveNation-Bourbon-Whiskey-Extract-oz/dp/B002X4DIFK)
OTOH, Tobias Lutz sent me a sample of some whiskey blend flake he made a while back (he called it 'whiskey gogo') and it was really good. I hate the taste of actual whiskey - it all tastes like used paint thinner to me - but the flavor in the tobacco was noticeable and went well with the smoke.

I was thinking about that. I want to get a semi-usable Lakeland essence ready to spice up boring tobaccos, so when I look into that I'll order some other extracts to play around with.
In the meantime, I found about two bowls worth of 2001 Erinmore Flake buried underneath some other stuff this morning, so that's what I'm smoking. This stuff is jet black.

Burley picks up flavor easily (case) but not Virginia (top sauce). Extracts are used but differ in the application solution. Alcohol can oxidize (turns into acetone). @TobiasLutz, can we ask what kind of solution you used to make your 'Whiskey GoGo'?

Finally done with work. Been putting in 65+ hours a week for what feels like the last year, but it's probably only been three or four months. My day starts at 8AM and I'm lucky to get a bit of time to myself to not work at night. I'm under the gun: I promised to deliver a brand new, built from the ground up, retail website to replace one of ours that was built in 2000-2001 - by no later than October 31st. Unfortunately I spend 40+ hours a week doing things other than website building, so I haven't been able to focus on this the way I'd want.
Still, here I am, with only 6 more (time consuming) tasks left on the checklist before it's finished.
I'm going to bundle up, head out, and watch the clear night sky. The rest of this bowl of Irish Flake will go with me, as will a big glass of pureh (pu'er, whatever) tea, and I'll load up the 4-Dot with some 38 year old MacBaren Symphony just in case I feel like staying out later. Night, all!

Congrats to the Mets. Cubs had a great season, have a bright future and a classy manager in Joe Maddon. I made a small bet on the Mets to win the WS at 4-1 as a rooting interest but mainly because I saw their young pitching studs all year and they're very good. Matz is the least of them, at this point, still good but he only projects to be their 5th starter in 2016.

Morning Chico,
Recording :). DVR provided with my cable service (Verizon).
JimInks, what do you think of the Mets pitching?
Pete
I've been saying for months that even though the Mets bullpen isn't that strong, with the exception of Familia, that in a short series, the Mets have three very good starters who could make life hell for you. I think they'd have had a harder time had they played the Pirates instead of the Cubs, and I think they will have a harder time playing the Royals if that's who they face.

It was my first naked bowl in a while so the taste of raw wood was pretty dominate. Will need a couple of more smokes to get it nice and coated but all in all it smoked like a dream.
not a gurgle at all. ( i did baby it by running a cleaner thru it now and then) but smoked it all the way down to dusty ash.
after the bowl, ran the base under running water and its all cleaned out. ( the base does collect a little ash goo, but rather the base get the goo and not the bowl)
I don't know why but every pic i take of the pipe makes it look huge but its really not. To me the bowl seems medium sized

Now that the FDA has handed over their proposed regulations to the OMB, it's important that we give the gov't one last push as a group concerning our thoughts on the matter. They need to understand that premium tobacco - handmade cigars, pipe tobaccos, and snuffs that aren't homogenized nor chemically altered - are different from cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and gas station "cigars". They need to understand that stopping people like us from buying premium tobacco does nothing to curtail youth consumption of tobacco. Children aren't consuming the tobaccos we enjoy, these tobaccos aren't marketed towards or appealing to children, and the whole idea that new rules & regulations on premium tobacco will stamp out youth smoking is preposterous.
Frankly, restricting the sale of premium tobacco products isn't going to curtail youth consumption of tobacco at all. Kids are smoking cigarettes like they always have, and they're smoking e-cigarettes. Those products need to be addressed.
Also, please don't turn this into a political debate. All political parties need to hear us loud and clear right now.

Murphy Anderson was one of the great comic book inkers of all time. We used to spend a lot of time together at conventions and on the phone. At my 1985 AcmeCon, we had a dinner for our guests at my apartment on Simpson Street. Murphy had fun telling us how he used to play in that house, and all throughout that neighborhood as he lived nearby when he was a kid. There's lots of stories I could tell about him. He was the first professional I ever showed a portfolio to. Murphy was gentle in his criticism, and generous with advice, all of which was practical and helpful. A sweet man, a great fan of comics, an important presence in the business for decades, and my friend for over thirty years. RIP Murph.

Pete, loose application is exactly why it was written that way. This is the ninth time the FDA has attempted to grab a hold of premium cigars, and they are basically acting like a rabid dog looking to bite. They're relentless, and they want unimpeded access to make the next generation completely smoke-free.
The gist is this: the FDA wants to regulate cigars the same way they do beef or any other consumable. For the safety of the kids, of course. To the best of my knowledge, premium cigar tobacco, pipe tobacco, nasal snuff, chew, etc., would be lumped in with e-cigarettes, dry cured cigarillos, chemically-flavored gas station blunts, etc. Basically there would be cigarettes, and then everything else.
Let's say you want to market a cigar. Your farm would be inspected by an FDA agent (which you're paying for), and your crops would be inspected by an FDA agent (which you're paying for), and then you would harvest your crop and blend your cigar. Each individual leaf of your new blend - one wrapper, one/two binder(s), and let's say two or three filler tobaccos - would need to be submitted to the FDA with the finished product and a pre-market application, plus a check for $55,000 or more. Per size. Want to make a robusto, corona, belicoso, and churchill? You're submitting four applications. This is obviously immediately going to put smaller boutique brands out of business.
And that's just to get in the door. Concerning the last 40,000 applications sent to the FDA for tobacco-related products that they currently oversee, less than 40 have been reviewed and only one has been approved. Obviously they aren't in a hurry to allow new products to reach market. Oh, and this is retroactive also. Any cigar released to market after February 15, 2007 (check that date, I may be off a few days) will be pulled from the shelves to be submitted. This is obviously immediately going to put even more smaller and/or newer brands out of business.
On top of this, the most noticeable regulations are: promotional materials, giveaways, and samples of tobacco, would be illegal; the minimum price of a cigar would be $10, regardless of size, weight, or makeup; packaging would become restrictive (which I honestly am not worried about - but it's proposed to make these products less appealing to children which is an argument I can't stand behind); there could potentially be expensive permits needed to sell tobacco products; the minimum age to purchase tobacco could raise to 21; there could potentially be no more cigar bars and/or smoking lounges nationwide; it would be nearly impossible to release special edition, small batch, limited, seasonal, etc. cigars; and, obviously, a gigantic list of further restrictions.
Needless to say, a lot cigar manufacturers would close shop, a lot of small business tobacconists would close shop, and tens of thousands of people both here in the US and in South American countries would be jobless overnight.
The FDA had already announced that we're basically down to outcomes. Option one, which is our worst nightmare, is where they gain oversight over premium tobacco products. Option two is to exempt cigars from oversight. The OMB right now is basically the last step in this process. From what I've been able to understand, Congress can't necessarily stop the OMB from making whatever decision they're going to make, and there are no easy avenues for a legal hold on temporarily stopping any immediate changes due to new regulations, so their decision is final. We could see regulations take effect as soon as 30 days after the announcement of their decision.
Now, I have no idea where pipe tobacco falls in this. I haven't heard any concrete answers regarding that, and my biggest issue with this whole debacle has been the cigar industry leaving other forms of premium tobacco in the dust. But, I don't think it's a stretch to say that if cigars fall, everything else will too. As far as I'm concerned, the entire premium tobacco industry should have banded together to fight this. Any time that I've written to, spoken on the phone with, or confronted in person, an elected official regarding this - whether on the local or national level - I have made it very clear that I wanted ALL premium tobacco to be exempt. It's left a bad taste in my mouth, honestly, because I can't draw a line between these products.

IMHO, it really isn't about a particular form of tobacco. It's not about tobacco at all. From the day the government first regulated a legal product, because they know better than everyone else, nothing is safe. WE THE PEOPLE messed up by not squashing it and telling the government to stick to what is actually their job. Now look at all the lead way some agencies have. They pass "Regulations" on their own, instead of passsing/ammending the law. Tobacco, sweets, salty food...nothing is safe. We'll have to start disguising our tobacco as marijuana.

I didn't hold out much hope for it when a friend offered to send me some (he sent 6 ounces). He loves it and wanted me to, also. I think it's decent for a lawn mower, uncomplicated smoke. Nothing world shaking, but fit for when you just want to smoke something pleasant without giving it much thought. I think a blend like that has some merit, especially at that price. Btw, I actually prefer and recommend the Smoker's Pride Mellow over the Rich Taste. It is a pretty fair VaBur with no topping. Not much nuance, but again, it's a good work smoke at a bargain price, so I bought a bag of it for those instances.
