My review ought to answer some of your questions:
This is a rope blend that cuts into coins fairly easily, though you should definitely dry it some before smoking because it will smoke wet. I packed the bottom with loose tobacco, stacked the coins, adding a little loose tobacco on top for an easier char lighting. By stacking the coins, you'll get all the flavors in nearly every puff, but if you decide to cube cut first, you'll be in for a variety of flavors in varying degrees per puff. The flavors are bold and forceful. A naturally tasting earthy, very slightly sweet brown Virginia amplified by strong nutty, earthy burleys, and further fueled by a blast of peppery perique. It's a flavor bomb, but not so powerful that it would knock you to your knees. A blend for discriminating smokers best served and sipped in a pipe with a wide bowl to savor the full experience of high quality tobaccos. Expensive and available only from Germany.

We need to talk about making flakes. I'd love a semi-authoritative PM describing your trials and tribulations so that I may try my hand at it! Or, is it as simple as filling a box with tobacco and putting a heavier box on top? What about moisture? How long must it stay compacted? So. Many. Questions!
Started the day off reading about the history of House of Windsor and various other PA-based pipe & cigar manufacturers. I probably should have been doing real work. Either way, I'm now just finishing brewing a big cup of some sort of black, malty, English tea, and I'll be putting fire to Kendal Kentucky in the Brebbia my wife bought for me a few Christmases ago.

Taste is slightly fruity but mostly dry tasting and somewhat astringent.

+1 on chewing rope tobacco. It's not like conventional chaw, e.g., Red Man, but it can be very smooth and satisfying. Actually I can't do OTC chaw - way too sweet!
Navy flakes can be pretty good chaw, but yes, I can see straight VA being a little too bitter. Ya gotta have some flavor. Once I tried some of my heavy latakia flake as chaw while mowing. By the time I realized I had to get that awful shite out of my mouth I was gagging audibly. I hope the neighbor didn't hear!

I'm back at the Kendal Kentucky well this morning. Happily.
I'm not sure that it will supplant Condor as my #2 favorite soapy blend, but the cost of importing Condor has to be weighed when making that claim. Seriously, Kendal Kentucky is great and I should have realized it sooner. Yet another tip of the hat to Jim aka freestoke who has much better taste than I do.

Hahaha!!
Yeah, it wasn't good and to make matters worse it started breaking apart and floating around in my mouth. I gagged a couple times while trying to spit it all out <:/ Looking back, I probably should have ripped some shreds off the side of the flake instead of cutting a piece off the end.
I've chewed a piece of HH Old Dark Fired before. It wasn't very good either but it wasn't as bad as this. It got real slimy though which was kinda gross.

I'm sure it's very good! You yourself said that you hit a bit of a blender's streak anyway, so there's something positive happening with the blend. Always remember that you're your worst critic.
No smoking for me right now. A few of our big pipe customers have consistently bugged me about Boswell's Christmas Cookie. Seems like every year around winter they want it, but Boswell's is about four hours away so it's not exactly a quick ride, especially in NW-Central-SE and then back PA snow.
So, as a surprise I've been putting together something I'm calling "Holiday Season-themed Chocolate Chip Biscuit" (the name is a work in progress). It's a kitchen sink blend containing multiple burleys, cavs, VAs, and a smidge of Maryland leaf, as well as dark and milk chocolate, a bit of Madagascar vanilla, and a touch of butterscotch because who doesn't love butterscotch?
My wife is a bit annoyed that I have, well, 14 pounds of tobacco poured out on the dining room table. The house smells quite nice, though.
This stuff needs a bit of drying out before it can be completely mixed. Then, of course, I have to get my hands dirty actually mixing it. Should be fun. My final taste-testing will be tomorrow while I'm in the workshop sawing down boards for a pipe cabinet I'm building. I can always add a touch more flavoring, so I've been pretty lighthanded with it... Too much and I can certainly cut it by adding more tobacco but then the blend is thrown out of whack and, other problems aside, the quantity of the blend grows and grows until I'm sitting on 40 pounds of something we'll never sell out of.
Ahem. Anyway.
I'm not big on aros but an afternoon spent tasting a few bowls won't hurt me.

Evening Andy,
If I'm blending for myself, then my opinion matters but otherwise I'm low palate on the totem pole.
I don't blend much with aros. My non-aro mixtures change in, sometimes pretty radically, over time and often aren't stable for a year.
Good luck with the tobacco on the table :).

What do you think of the Obsidian? I assume that was the one in the black sleeve. I have the robustos and I really like them. If you draw slow and don't overheat them, they reward you with lots of chocolate - almost like smoking Bob's Chocolate Flake but without the soapy lakeland. Mine are over a year old. Some ppl consider them a dog rocket. They do get resinous and nasty if you puff too hard

Mine was about 3 years old; it came in a Pinar del Rio 5-pack sampler. It was a fairly good smoke; I wouldn't say it was a dog rocket. It did get hot and bitter when it was down to 1.5 inches; even the pipe didn't help that. I'd give it 2 out of 5.

It sure is. I have a 320 KS Gauis that I dedicated to FVF and it's a terrific looker and smoker. I got that on sale last year for $100, which was 50 bucks off the retail price. So I wanted another to smoke other blends in so I can smoke an author style pipe more often.

just starting...
2015 Cromwell in a 1987 Capitello Ionico II (rusticated) taper billiard.
It was perhaps 1975 at Roosevelt Raceway (trotters and pacers) in Westbury NY. I bet a $20 exacta on Scotside (16-1) and Hermes Lobell (18-1) and $20 on the reverse of Hermes Lobell and Scotside. As the race started the tote board showed that this exacta was paying $552.00! That's an important number because it was a big payout but still below $600 (for a $2 bet) and that's the threshold where you are taxed on winnings (299-1).
These two longshots ran after each other, taking and relinquishing the lead, both times around the track but at the wire, Nappy Raider, the 3-5 favorite (from the 8 hole and in pacing, that's unusual), nosed out Hermes Lobell for second.
Had Nappy Raider a slightly smaller nose I'd have won ~$5500 dollars, a big chunk of tax free cash in 1975 (>$25,000 today), but it didn't happen, and now it's just another story but I bring it up because this version of Cromwell is leading all around the track and I can only hope that it holds on to be a winner.

First experience with tambo. Interesting flavor - deep tobacco flavor with some citrus and spicy or floral notes. It was a little dry but it burns well. I don't think I'll hydrate the rest of it. The needle on the nicotine meter snapped off.
The pipe is from a lot of unfinished no-brand pipes I picked up on the bay of E. Smokes pretty well. I'll leave this one unfinished just for the sake of variety.

PM me your address. I promised to send a sample to Alligator Gar, and if I'm stuffing some into an envelope I might as well double it up, right? I'm not sure how much I have left but there's at least a couple ounces from the batch I purchased back in 2011 or so.
Ending the evening trying something new - dousing some tobacco in W.L. Weller (and sealing it up) and trapping some tobacco in a bag with a small container of W.L. Weller. I want to see what the difference, if any, will be.
I'll probably let the doused (I suppose you could say soused) dry and then hit it again.
Having another bowl of St. Bruno. No need to be stingy with it now that it's on its way back to the states!

I'm convinced it is the same tobacco, just that SJF has the Perique added.
It gives it a bit of spice here and there. I think it is a bit sweeter than FVF.
They are definitely 2 of my favorite tobaccos.
You should try SG Navy Flake as well. It is basically FVF with Latakia and a light rum topping. Great stuff.
I'm a Gawith whore if you haven't figured that out already. :pipe:
Check out this video. I love this guy's pipe tobacco reviews. He's pretty cool and has similar tastes as me (except I tend to lean towards sweeter tobaccos) so I watch a lot of his stuff.

Thanks. Quite a few reviews mention the similarity to SJF, which is why I wondered. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what Perique tastes like, and to detect the spice people talk about.
SG Navy Flake is near the top of my list, but it always seems to be sold out. I'm on a couple of waiting lists for it, so I'm sure it'll appear at some point. It definitely sounds up my alley. I didn't realize it had latakia - now I want it even more! I'm fast becoming a SG, GH and JFG whore, and a flake junkie! I seem to have more expensive tastes in tobacco than I do in cigars. Fortunately pipe tobacco goes a lot further.

If you haven't already, jar up some of the FVF and then lose it for a few years. I have a gigantic mason jar tucked away that I filled with a box or two of the stuff back in 2011. You'd be convinced I'm growing diamonds, not storing tobacco.

Day one, and the experiment is going well based on the aroma. The tobacco dried a touch overnight but it smells very strongly of good, real whiskey, unlike some other whiskey aros I've sniffed before that seemed a bit "generic". I'll leave it sealed until tomorrow and hit it again with the stuff, then allow it to sit for a week or so, then do a final drying down to reasonable levels. Then the taste test will begin!
I'm inside from working in the shop. My pipe cabinet is coming along nicely! Had a nice bowl of Balkan Sasieni while I was out there, and I would have stayed for a second but I just can't handle the cold. Mom has Raynaud's Syndrome (or whatever it's called) and although it's less prevalent in males, I think I may have it too. Started noticing it in my early-to-mid 20s. Seems like my fingers and toes are much, much more sensitive to mild temperatures than most everyone I know.
