On my 2nd cobful of a blend (mixture, really) I just made from some leaves that just arrived from Larry, a grower in KY (http://www.cigarbum.com/forum/manufacturers-and-retailers-forum/tobacco-butcher-leaf-4714.html)- Silver River, plus some perique, turkish imzir, and latakia (lat not from Larry). It's not too bad - spicy, smoky, slightly sweet, but a little cigaretty; next time I think I'll omit the imzir.

Morning Bruce,

Is this mixture whole that you're pressing (flake) or is it cut and you're mixing it?

You're in the state with the right name, north to be sure, but have you visited any tobacco farms? Just a thought but perhaps you could pick your own leaf or maybe trade a farmer some leaf for finished pipe tobacco (I doubt that many would have the ability to press as you do). At the quantity you use, they might be willing to give you some choice leaf - especially if you name the mixture after him/her or their farm :).

This particular mix is just raw leaves, cut up (I've found that a pasta cutter makes a pretty good ribbon/shag cut), jarred, and shaken. But yes, normally what I do is press flake but in this case I'm trying to figure out what goes best with Silver River which I find singularly enigmatic, unlike any of the conventional tobaccos I've toyed with.

Unforch, I've never been to a tobacco farm, in fact I've never seen a tobacco plant up close and personal. OTOH, I'm pretty happy with the places I buy from :)

Yes, I finally loaded a bowl. Seems the bowl has an odd taper inside (can't get my little finger in far enough to touch the bottom) and looks like the hole comes into the bowl a little high. After dumping it out, the bottom of the bowl looks wet, but it never gurgled. Haven't seen much about Hilson. The stem is a cheap plastic and there are no markings. Does that sound like a knockoff?

Morning George,

Does it say HILSON (and possibly/probably Bolero) on the pipe?

Hilson was the first company to introduce this style of pipe (1960s I believe) and there were knockoffs but most were well made and passed for the Bolero without closer inspection. Hilson made some well respected mid-range pipes.

High draught hole won't gurgle by itself but it prevents burning all of the tobacco. I wrote somewhere else that most gurgle is caused by a partial obstruction of the draught hole with a wet piece of tobacco that flaps on and off the hole.

Tapered bowls are intentional (some manufacturers) and the merschaum insert was obviously made this way. Different schools of thought on whether this is a beneficial or not. If the hole is too high, so that it interferes with a good smoke, you could try some pipe mud to raise the bottom but if it smokes well, I'd not bother.

So, how does it smoke?

Pete

Pete,

Unfortunately there are no marking anywhere. I'm don't consider myself someone to rate a pipe, but I'm the only one here, so, Lots of smoke and a easy draw, and about the same number of relights that I generally encounter. The smoke was good but seemed hot. Bowl was noticeably hot but not alarming. Quite a bit of tobacco left in the bottom. I'll definitely smoke a few more bowls over time, and wouldn't be surprised if it finds a regular spot. Thanks for all your info/help.

Sounds like a good Bolero knock off and all of them (including the Hilson) could get hot. I don't know (or remember) what material is used for the outside of the bowl but they're similar in smoking to most meerschaum lined pipes.

Sounds like you're doing everything right.

This one is a mix of burley, latakia, some topped VA from Tobias Lutz (sweetened mainly), and cigar scrap cavendish, all slightly moistened with whiskey, vanilla, almond, cherry, and molasses. A bit of a tobacco salad to be sure, but not too bad. The almond doesn't help therefore it is omitted from succeeding flakes. & it could use a little more straight up bright VA.

My first impression was favorable; it is different from any pipe tobacco I've ever tried. Definitely some new smells and tastes there, some campfire memories in there and some other tastes that I can't quite pin down yet. It was very smooth and mellow, yet robust at the same time. It smoked dry all the way to the bottom, just a tiny bit left. Can't wait to smoke it in some different pipes; it's hard to review it with just one bowl in a tiny pipe.

Why, dump the Arcadia on top of the HHVS, that's what! And I'll tell you, they've morphed into something sweeter and more floral than their singular parts would suggest. It's quite nice if yer like me and want to hoard all of the Bengal, Lancer's Slices, and Fusilier's Rations.

Boy, I feel terribly about not remembering the name of the carver. I bought this a few years back on another site directly from the carver for no more than $150, and he's since gone on to ask significantly more for his pipes. It's a beauty. Wonderfully stained, wonderfully grained, beautiful rolling sort of Danish-style with sexy little curves and a tiny cumberland stem, and it's easily my best smoker.

Morning Andy,

White burley I've heard of but I was hoping that there is a White Virginia as I imagined a mixture the color of Latakia and PVC shavings :).

Pete, just realized I never did confirm or deny my blend.

White Burley and Bright VA. The "ite" is what got my mind all twisted. Excuse my ignorance, please!

Turns out both, plus Red VA, East Carolina, a bit of Stoved VA, and a touch of light-brown Burley were the components in that particular blend. I seem to remember it being a bit brighter and livelier when fresh. A few years in a jar and it became a touch muddled... Maybe the burleys, of which there really wasn't much, became more dominant. Odd, but possible, I suppose.

Right. Now, to keep this on track.

Had some MacB Plum Cake in the lovely Sasieni 4 Dot (I want more of these pipes!) while I was puttering around the garage earlier, cursing the cold and rain and wishing that I could have a hands-on woodworking hobby in a perpetual 75 degree climate. The tobacco was, plus or minus a week or so, exactly three years older than me, which means that it was tinned in June of '77. A quick check of Google shows that in that month: Bill Walton's Trailblazers won the championship over the 76ers, Elizabeth II celebrated 25 years on the throne, the Apple II was released, and, exactly three years before I was born to the day, Elvis performed his last concert. I wonder where that tin of tobacco sat for all of the years until I bought it.

Then, I moved on to some slightly younger but still old Escudo, circa 1997-98, which puts it near my Junior/Senior year of high school, in a tiny little squiggly fish-shaped Dan Huber nosewarmer pipe (which, again, I bought before he matured and started charging big money). This tin must've been been born right after AC Peterson took over. To bookend my experience, I would love to track down some Cope-made Escudo, circa 1994, which would be that company's last year of production, so that I could try some made when I was a Freshman.

On deck for a brisk walk in the dark and rain: the feared and powerful Ennerdale in an upscale cob that has performed flawlessly for years. Was gifted to me by Moo, I think, and I question his judgement as it's not every day that someone would give away a pipe that smokes this well.

Jim - I was going to ask you what you thought of this one, but then it occurred to me to see if you had reviewed it on tobaccoreviews.com (http://tobaccoreviews.com), which you have; hope you don't mine my quoting you here:

The Virginias are citrusy sweet, grassy and hay-like. The burley is mildly nutty, toasty sweet, adding a little substance. The Orientals are smoky, woody and spicy, and are evident in every puff, but do not dominate. While the Virginias act as a base for the other components, they tend to take the lead more than the burley does. Burns at a more than moderate rate, but should not be puffed at a fast pace, or you risk the presence of it burning hot as well as getting a cigarette taste. The flavor is consistent to the finish. Has a mild nic-hit, leaves virtually no moisture in the bowl, and the after taste is pleasant. The Orientals tend to make for a woody room note. An all day smoke if you're so inclined.

Sounds like a good time! I assume it's bow season in AR as it is in VA? I'm going out next weekend with some bow hunters. I'm not a bowhunter myself so I'm just along for the camping and socializing. I'll bring a 22 as it's also squirrel season. And of course it's always empty beer can season :)

Yep, bow season opened last weekend and we did go sit in stands then. This weekend however we just went to get some work done. Moved a stand, filled up a couple of feeders, checked some game cams and then several of us went out to stock up on firewood for the upcoming camping.

We do have a one week modern gun, doe only week starting Friday, October 10th, and then starting the 17th there is 9 days of muzzle loading.
So it's getting crunch time and I'm getting excited. My ol neck is starting to swell up.

LOL, it's more the latter :) I've been toying with pipe-making of late. You could call this a "concept pipe." It actually smokes pretty well, cool and dry - easy to keep a steady burn going.

G&H Louisiana Flake in my official flake pipe - an old Hardcastle's Old Bruyere billiard. Not expecting a heavily topped whiskey/tonquin blast, I'm really enjoying this blend. Nice light chocolate and burning leaves flavors, and just enough Lakeland essence to be interesting. It compares well with the Gawith Scottish Autumn Flake I had last night (which maybe wins by a hair). I think both of these samples came from tmoran, so thanks, brother!

For the last month or so I have had the company of three of my female cousins from back east and have been too busy to write.:flustered: These girls are 19, 20 and 22 and thank god with no children as yet; they will be with me until after the new year. My girls are totally delightful and they all enjoy the smell of my pipe tobacco which goes a long way.:friendly_wink: In the evening when I am smoking my pipe they would be sitting around playing their math calculating games with no paper, pen or calculator and they would have me with pen and paper and a scientific calculator checking their results.:fly: This process was OK with me until they get into specific gravity of liquids, different size of pipes and pressures and liquid flow. I said to myself "dang-it", this is giving me a headache.:bash: I know my girls have been doing this sort of thing since they were very young, but for me this is tough even with a computer and calculator. This evening I am having a bowl of my blend of Dunhill's Nightcap with Ashtons Artisans Blend in my extra-large Rossi Freehand.:pipe: I am topping off this smoke with a large ice cold mug of "Guinness Draught" brew and I am feeling relaxed.:beerchug:
