I had a bowl of St James Flake in a "The Pipe" Canadian light blue with with two white pin-stripes, during my morning commute up the mountain to work.

I love this pipe. People seem to have an instinctual hatred for this pipe. Whenever I smoke it folks give me weird looks at best, and look like they are gonna turn a hose on me or strike me at worst. The perverse side of me loves to smoke it and smile at everyone.

2015 Gawith Hoggarth Curly Cut deLuxe Sliced in a 1940s Barling's Make Ye Olde Wood #1372 R (long) taper billiard. Morning cup of coffee, freshly ground.

Of course, I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to coffee. I grind it, use an Aeropress and make some concentrate that I dilute into an Americano. It's better than most of what I used to make but I suspect that I've only upgraded ingredients, methods and especially price to marginally improve a situation that was always and continually fair to middling. It's fine by me, sort of like looking at your ugly kid and thinking that they're not so bad looking after all and I love 'em just the same.

Of course I never needed to do this with with my kids, who inherited their mothers good looks, but had I been the only subscriber to their gene pool then I would have been at it full time.

Now I'm having some Escudo in a Willard briar. This is a small bowled pipe and is quickly becoming my go to for Escudo, as the bowl is perfect for folding and stuffing one coin of Escudo in. I reckon it would be ideal for the other coin cuts too such as Dunhill DeLux Navy Rolls, Luxury Bullseye Flake, Davidoff Flake Medallions etc.

Yes, I know that I'm speaking to myself :).

I filled the bottom of this pipe with Blackwoods Flake, but since the tin was nearly depleted I mixed the rest with Tawny Flake to make a full bowl. Combined with Blackwoods, the Tawny improved dramatically from dismal to poor and as its influence expired and its obsequious chemical grunge faded the smoke became palatable.

Didn't realize that it contained sugar before I tried it but it's delicious and refreshing and I'll have to see if there's a sugar free version. Anyone else tried it?

No real seal, so by the time you took it home the enormous amount of moisture SG used had evaporated to the point it was ready to smoke. That was before the UK went insane and changed to grams and did away with shillings and real money. Then one day, I just stopped smoking it. I still have a jar with some in it, but VERY slowly it has continued to dry even though it is sealed. Now it is dry and tough like beef jerky and the flavour has changed if I remember correctly. It is still a decent, but harsher smoke. I can testify that there is a limit to the benefits of aging however, and this tobacco is past its sell by.

Still fighting wind gusts to 25mph out here, beautiful but breezy. Went to the Dollar Tree to load up on coloring books, fluorescent sticks and the like for my (soon to be) 4yo granddaughter, Kaiden, who'lll be going to the Carolina coast with my wife and daughter. My wife's family gather there each year for the 4th. Yours truly must stay home to feed the cats, dog and fish. Had I gone I'd have taught Kaiden to swim but it'll have to wait for another time.

I know that you guys won't shed a single tear for me and we all know why; a solid week of uninterrupted pipe smoking, solace, more pipe smoking and bolstered by a few drams of sake in a beautiful nihonshu set so generously sent to me by MrMotoyoshi. If Kaiden was here it would be perfect.

Well, I have flexible hours ;P I went in at ten, am home for an early supper and will be going back this evening for a couple hours. Two weeks ago I was licensed and appointed by the Virginia Annual Conference to be pastor over a co-operative parish (fancy name for a two-point charge) in the United Methodist Church.

Yesterday, and the day before, I was camping with my wife and had a few bowls of Homborger Veermaster, and a few bowls of Billy Budd, and a few bowls of Burley Kake, and a few bowls of Bob's Chocolate Flake. I also had a Pinar Del Rio (ok) and a three year rested Oliveros King Habano. The Oliveros was incredible. I think I picked up a few 5'ers of them back in the summer of '12 for just under 3$ a stick. It was WAY better than the last two expensive sticks I had (9, and 12 dollars).

I bought some Marlin and stored it immediately because I fear I'd go through it pretty quickly. If you have the chance to buy old McConnell made Marlin Flake, squeeze the tin all around to make sure that there's no extra pressure because it often became moldy (in the tin) even after a couple of years.

Pelican in my trusty Barling stamped Regency EXEL T.V.P. Wish I knew someone who could interpret those marks. Pelican differs from the 1882 I had earlier by its homogenous, harmonious blend. Not "one note" or boring, just the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.

Just finished my bowl of Potlatch and thought I would share one of the things I love about the Calabash. Not only is it an excellent smoker, but it's the most efficient pipe I have ever smoked. These pics show the amount of unburnt tobacco left at the end of the bowl. Almost none.
