There is a new plague in TV commercials, probably the product of music education being virtually eliminated in high schools nationwide. (Who needs music when you have ridiculously expensive sports programs to entertain the parents, eh?) Few people now know anything about playing a musical instrument, a situation that extends into popular music, and it is reflected in TV commercials I think. Ad after ad has these plinky little repeated phrases as background to the 5 minutes of warning about a drug guaranteed to smooth your skin while it eats out your liver, or some mindless computer generated rhythm section, available on that Sony electric keyboard at your local online dealer for $79.50, free shipping. What I find revealing about these "musical" fillers is that they are precisely the same sorts of noise generated by beginners as they practice their exercises, or the sort of cacophony emanating from the basement when your teenage son invites his friends over to jam. It is the sound that George Bernard Shaw was thinking of when he said, "Hell is full of amateur musicians." Few have experience with the boredom of such exercises, so that listening to beginner noises as music doesn't trigger suicidal urges as it does with me. The biggest danger of many drugs, even in light of the extensive list of terrifying side effects, is mass psychological trauma of musicians exposed to their commercials.
Nothing but a walk today, despite the sun. Cold.

Ah, there it is. I've missed your rants in the 'what did you smoke today' threads. Music... manners... grammar and prose... it's been a while since I've heard a good rant. I detest all commercials so I'm quick on the mute button in the rare event I find myself in front of the idiot box. I especially hate radio commercials with their idiotic little skits featuring one prole gloriously reciting the majestic qualities of some (lackluster, Chinese-made) product to another sycophantic sap. It makes me ill, so I don't listen to media all that much. I consider myself fortunate that I am not familiar with the plinky tunes to which you refer.

As I smoke my first bowl of the day, the 4Dot and RY, I am presented with a new Humira commercial. Okay, what's with the pronunciation? Presented with the word "humira" and asked for possible pronunciations, I would start with the obvious -eye-ruh, -ee-ruh, and -ear-uh, and the three first syllables as hoom-, humm-, or hyume-. Since I can't come up with any use in English, German, Italian, Spanish, or Greek where the letter "i" is pronounced like the "e" in "err", I would have gotten it wrong. I've heard a few of these Humira commercials, mainly when I can't get to the remote in time, but they consistently pronounce it "Hyume-erra". All I can figure is that all of the announcers used in the commercial are from Syracuse, a small city in Central New York where they pronounce the city's name Sarah-cuse.

Rather fond of ABF myself. I think burley burns better in a cob than VAs, but not sure why that would be. The last of that can of RY just vanished before dinner (broccoli and pasta, with lots of olive oil, Parmesan, and red pepper), so I've resorted to some Marlin Flake in the FourDot pot which should last me to bedtime. Just transposed moves in a chess game and gave away what might have been a hrad fought draw or conceivably a win. sigh. Like signing an incorrect scorecard or something. "I am such a stupid." I thought I'd have a nice tall bowl of FVF and settle in for the Giants/Dodgers game, then I remembered I finished that tin a couple days ago. So I started pulling tins of flake tobacco out of my cabinet, stopping after there were 8 different tins in front of me, not wanting to make a choice too difficult. Now I cannot decide. Maybe I'll just have a bowl of Carter Hall while I mull this over.

This morning, during my morning commute up the mountain to work, I had my first taste of an Esoterica blend. It was Woodbridge. It's a mix of LOTS of different VA's with a fruity topping. I could only taste a hint of the topping now and then. The VA's were excellent. Started off very smooth and soft, and picked up flavor and "oomph" as the bowl burnt.
While smoking this Woodbridge in a Falcon, I came around a corner on this two-lane mountain highway to find a small rock slide had blocked the on-coming lane, and a group of bighorn sheep were blocking my lane. They were all standing around in my lane of the highway watching a pair of bighorns "get it on". The sex act had them all enthralled and they weren't looking at my truck, they were ignoring me. I dropped my truck into third gear, then second, then rolled right up on the pair that were rutting, stopping with my front bumper about two feet from the pair. The male looked at me then, but wouldn't stop rutting and wouldn't move. Several LONG blasts from the horn (from only two feet away) finally made the male dismount and move off the highway.
If those rocks are still on the highway when I get off work, I'll pull off the highway and clear them.

Absolutely. A can or two isn't going to make a difference to me if someone's running low. I've finally beaten Durbar!!! 10 minutes drying time helps. But the true secrete? Packing lighter. This blend wants a loose, air pocket pack. Finally getting this blend. Excellent Virginia sweetness and tangy/spicy Orientals. The latakia is playing second fiddle. It is excellent.
And that, boys and girls, is why you never give up on a blend until you've tried it in multiple pipes with varying drying times as well as different packing techniques.

I got stuck with the night shift at the hotel today. I prefer my normal shift: the morning shift. I'm an early riser, and I really like cooking breakfast for the whole hotel each morning.
I'm about to head home and I have a bowl of HV packed in a Falcon and ready for the ride down the mountain.

Swear I chose this before reading Pugsley's post. H&H Classic Burley Kake in a Ben Wade freehand. The thing I like about Burley Kake is when I'm done rubbing it out and grooming the tobacco, there are two generous pinches of snuff left on the drying board. Snaaarf!
