View Full Version : Should I try one of these DE flavored/infused cigars, or are they all revolting?

I'm about to put in an order at BnB with a Groupon I never used and is about to expire. I've never had flavored cigar in my life, but looking at their selection I'm curious about a few.

DE Tabak Especial Negra
DE Java Maduro
Natural Root (apparently not flavored, but uses pipe and other exotic tobaccos)
Ambrosia

What say you, give 'em a try or head for the hills?

Those should be significantly less flavored than any Acid, so give some a shot. You won't know if you like them or not any other way.

Not saying Acids are bad, just not for me.

I'm not one for flavored cigars, the only one from the list I have had is the Natural. IIRC the cap is sweetened, just FYI.

I have smoked all of them. The tabak and Java are good mild smokes slightly sweet with heavy coffee flavors. The ambrosia (not sure which one you are looking at) are a toned down version of the ACID, really good IMO, the root did nothing for me don't really remember what it taste but I remember I hated it. So if you have never tried a flavored cigar I would go with the tabak or Java.

The Ambrosia they have is the Mother Earth. I'm a little scared of it being a clove-bomb.

Which would you choose between the Tabak and Java? I noticed they also have the Nub Cafe series. Any good? I'm probably just going to go for one or two since I might not liked infused stuff at all.

Clove can be overwhelming if you don't like it. Either the tabak or the Java should be good. The Java is DE and Rocky Patel at least they use to be, it would probably be more appropriate for you.

Never tried the nub so I can't comment on that one.

I'm not a fan of infused/flavored cigars. I tied an ACID ones and couldn’t do it. However, Tabak is pretty fabulous. Smooth, mild, creamy with a distinct taste of coffee. Not my everyday smoke, but a nice change of pace every so often.

I was not unimpressed with a Java. I find it to be flat and unsatisfactory.

I tried the Tabak Negra and thought it was decent....

I find the ambrosia to be enjoyable. I say give it a try. The tabaks are worth trying. If you find you dont like it then dont get more but if you are curious give it a whirl.

I enjoyed the java, only one from the list I've tried. Have heard the tabak is good as well. Not sure if it's an option or not but don't pass on an Isla Del Sol either, I am addicted to those little suckers. They're sweet but damned good.

I've had the Tabak Especial Dulce and Cafe con Leche and liked both, but I'm not sure about the Negra. Reason being, I've had both the the Java Latte and Maduro and only liked the Latte.

Now the Nub Cafe, I love those. Just bought a box of the Cappuccino yesterday actually. Similar to the Tabak and Java, I like the Cappuccino and Macchiato, but not the Espresso.

Yup, got a box of them too!

(For the record, I do smoke regular cigars. I just enjoy the sweet simplicity an Isla del Sol or Nub Cafe offers.)

Thanks for all the opinions, guys. I think I'll try a Tabak or Java and a Natural.

I am working my way through reviewing the entire line on another board. Hated them until I started piping, now I like many of them. The Java is great with a good stout. Favorite regular Acid is the Cold Infusion.

Haven't tried the ones you've listed but so far in trying the acid line I found the Kuba Kuba to be an enjoyable change of pace with the sweet spices the stick offers. My biggest problem with it was a sweetened tip which I've never been a fan of.

I'm not a flavored fan because I've tried them & don't really like them.
Seeing as you've never tried them you'll never know if you like them or not.
I voted for the Java, but really say give them all a shot.

That damn treacly cap is the one thing that I would change about them - don't care for it either. Some have more than others.

Yeah, I'm afraid of the sweetened cap.
Desertlifter, how's about copying your reviews over here to CBum?

Not a bad idea. I will get onto that - maybe a large one stop thread for them would be easiest.

BTW, the sweetened cap can be dealt with in large part by wiping the cap down with a damp cloth or paper towel before smoking them, a trick I learned from Mr. Drew.

IMO, With the Java, the coffee is more in the aroma. It does smell nice. I found the cigar itself to be just kind of lacking. The Tabak Especial is not too bad, subtle coffee flavor with the smoke. Not an everyday thing. Goes well in the morning, with what else?... a cup of coffee. The sweetened tip does diminish as you go along. I would probably enjoy it better if it was NOT sweetened, but that is how I like my coffee too; unadulterated.

I think the infused sticks have a time and place. I like them here and there but not often. The Tabak Especial Negra is very good in my opinion. I like them as a morning smoke with a cup of coffee with sweet cream. It is a good stick in my opinion.

The Tabak definitely seems to get the most praise.
Desertlifter did you mention to Drew that you didn't like the sweetened caps?

Yep - that is how we got around to the trick of wiping down the cap. I use a fairly aggressive cut on them to cut down (hah!) the sweetness. I old never punch or shuriken cut them.

I actually bought the Nub Cafes from my B&M to support them, and buy myself some good grace, so I paid more than I had to.

Famous Smoke will be your best bet, especially with the 15% off Cigar Bum promo code (cigarbum15)

I've enjoyed most of the Natural by Drew Estates that I've tried, although they're not technically an infused cigar.
I love the Dirt Torpedo.

If you haven't tried any of them its definitely worth it to see for yourself. Just because we love it or hate it means nothing. Give it a whirl.

True. The Natural does sound interesting. Do they all have sweetened caps?

I emailed DE to see if they had one that didn't have the sweetened cap. They replied and said they all did.
However, the Pimp Sticks that I've tried didn't taste like it. It was definitely not very noticeable.

I'm going to try the damp rag trick next time I have one.

I'm stocked up now and will report back when i give some of these a try. They sure as hell don't smell like cigars... I'll try to be open-minded about the cap and go for the full experience before wiping it.

I smoked a Drew Estate Tabak Especial Robusto last night and it was one of the best cigars I've ever had, infused or not.

Generally speaking I'm not a big fan of infused cigars. I'm the same way with pipe tobacco, as I don't like many aromatics.

However there are a couple of infused cigars I have enjoyed, so I would say defintely try a stick before just deciding you don't like it. The ones I do like tend to be the coffee infused ones. If only I could find a coffee infused stick that didn't have the syrupy sweetened cap I think that would be the ticket.

There is a middle of the road here. Natural by Drew Estate swears up and down they are not infused, but they are definitely unique. I haven't liked all of them that I've tried, but a couple have been excellent. If you try one, I suggest the Big Dirt Torpedo.

Happy smoking.

I've now tried 2 different Acids, a DE Tabak Especial Dulce and a Negra, and an Ambrosia. Oh, and the infamous Jimmie's. The only one I cared for was the DE Negra, but wouldn't seek them out. Just not my thing, I guess. I'll give Natural a try, though.

I have had the Acid Kuba Kuba, and I could not place what the infused flavor was, for the life of me.

It tasted fine though. The most distracting thing for me was the sweetened cap. It was WAY too sweet for me and kept overpowering everything else.

Both Acids tasted very similar to me, and very heavy on clove spice. And yes, the caps are seriously sweetened!

I'll admit I quite enjoyed the Kuba Kuba. I found the aromatics to be quite pleasant the the flavours fairly smooth. The sweetened cap irritates me though. Ironically for someone with a sweet tooth, I enjoy natural hints of sweetness in the tobacco rather than a sugary cap. Luckily the cap doesn't stay sugary for very long.

+1 on the Cafe con Leche, but that wasn't on your list, so I voted none of the above.

The one I had was sweet the entire time.

I'm a fairly slobbery smoker so I may well have dissolved the sugars off of it in good time

Absolutely. Don't even think about keeping infused cigars near your other cigars - the flavors will definitely bleed over to the non-infused.
