View Full Version : What Is "IT" About Davidoffs ??

I'm really starting to love them, what is "It" about them? It's that thick, rich, creamy smoke...that's what it is. Thanks Demuths1770, Tobias Lutz, for the introduction. Kyle gifted me some Silver Cigarillos at Christmas. That got me asking and reading. Tobias, gave me some good recommendations. They all went into the Humi for 3 months. I pulled out the cigarillos a couple weeks ago...DAMN!! So much heavy/creamy smoke from such a small stick. They went fast.
I followed them with Tobias's recommendations..Nica Toro, Robusto, and a Short Corona, Anniv #2 Church, and am now eyeing the Special Series "R" & "T", and Millennium Blend Robusto. They have all been somewhat unique and different from each other, while still carrying that Davidoff signature thick, creamy smoke, that I've really come to enjoy.
I still haven't developed a like/tolerance for pepper, but like thick heavy smoke, and creamy is just an added plus. Davidoff is a fit. They are pricey, so I only pick up a couple at a time. I have a local B&M, that has a sweet separate walk-in, dedicated to Davidoff. For now that is very helpful. Probably a curse down the road.
To keep the finances and marriage intact....I am seeking input on other brands that may have the same profile, without being too pricey.

For me, the IT with Davidoff is definitely the leaf quality. They just have a higher standard, I believe, when it comes to selecting their crops and how they use them. No matter which one you smoke, you can tell the leaf quality is just excellent and the flavor is always there. Their attention to detail and QC with their sticks is really top top top notch as well.
I never smoked a Davidoff that I didn't like. Great stuff.

Here's A Noob Question, I'm Sure.....what component (s) produces so much smoke? I had originally thought it was the oils, but have had a couple other NC's that appeared "really oily", and the smoke was...meh, at best.

Have you had the Colorado Claro Short Perfecto? That is my favorite regular production Davidoff and with some patience boxes of 10 can be had for about $110.

I honestly don't think the tobacco leaves have much to do with smoke production so much as the proper rolling technique does. By crafting a perfect roll, the tobacco is evenly distributed, the pack isn't too tight, and the draw is perfect. Makes for that perfect air to combustion balance that creates that nice mouth-feel and big billows of smoke. Proper RH and all that boring storage stuff maters a lot too :p
The leaf I was talking about is all about the proper age and flavor.
Hope that makes sense. :stogie:

No, but I think it was mentioned in those previous conversations. Thanks!! It's on my radar now. Payday tomorrow, B&M..."here I come".

drew estates are smoke bombs as well but i can compare anything to daidoffs as i have yet to have one but have been wanting to give one a try. may just have to go out for a smoke tomorrow night now and finally give one a try! i read alot and found that this seemed to be a good ciagrillo so thats what i went with. i know alot of cigerillos are really hit or miss as to them being like the full sized cigar but if the davidoffs live up to what i read and are that good i gotta try one now. your welcome Bowtech4ever

I've never had a Davidoff, but that's one thing I love about Padron. They always seem to have a perfect draw and those nice, thick bellows of smoke.

Sigaar, amazingly enough, Padrons have been my other love. My only box buys. RenoH414 just NST'd me a couple in The Family Reserve line. I'll be waiting for them to wake up!

Saka says its from using oily tobaccos. I imagine he's talking more than just an oily wrapper though. Other than that lighter leaf will burn easier. I don't smoke Davidoff but I know they aren't known for being very strong. So I imagine they don't use much if any ligero. Thinner leaf = more combustible = more smoke. Just my guess. A good roll and proper draw is obviously a given.

The only one I've ever tried was the Nicaragua and is one of my top 3 smokes.

Davidoff has extensive quality control measures which factor into the higher pricepoint. For any who haven't had the pleasure of their sticks, here's a good little read.

I picked up two Davidoff Nica en tubo's from one of the nearest B&Ms mid-March and fired one off in a PIF! I'm going to let mine rest awhile before firing it up but can't wait as it'll be my first as well! I too love thick creamy smoke.

You shouldn't have to let it rest for too long - unlike a lot of manufacturers, you won't ever get a "young" Davidoff, as they let them rest in a humidified room for at least 6 months (if not longer) before they ship them to vendors. Just let it rest long enough to acclimate to your humidor's humidity and then have at it!
They are great sticks, I'm sure you are going to like it!

I have to agree with everyone, I love the whole Davidoff line!!! Whenever I see it time to have a "special" smoke, davidoff is my go-to. Great construction, great smoke, great taste. They don't get any better. I wish I could afford them on a regular!!!
But, since I can't, my everyday go to cigar is "The Griffins" or "AVO" lines. They are manufactured in the same location, and have just as good quality. I've probably smoked literally hundreds of Griffin robustos, and have never, ever, ever had a bad burn or a defect.

Oh, definitely nothing wrong with it. Almost all my sticks end up aging since I have way too many... Lol I have cigars from 2006 in the humidor.
Since it is his first one, I just thought I'd let him know it is likely good to go in case he was excited to try it.

OK had a davidoff grand cru 3 tonight. I made a special trip for it and I have to say was not impressed. Don't get me wrong great construction awesome thick smoke out put just not my flavor profile! It was "bland" to me. Light with notes of hay was woodie. Just not for me. I would rather spend the money on a liga that's creamy an up my ally.

Kyle, don't give up on them just yet. The Gran Cru Series IMO, is one of the milder lines they have. Too mild for me too, but the Millenium Blend is full, and the Special Series is med/full. I like the Nicaraguan Puros as well. Medium, but a really good smoke.

Could not agree more. This is just about the perfect smoke in the perfect size.

the real downfall is the price so it will be awhile till i have another one. i almost got a Millenium instead since it was right around the same 13$ price point. i went and had a tat reserva to make up for the let down last night lol

Haven't made the chance for a Davidoff yet, but love AVO maduros, they really do stand apart and might even be my only Dominican I keep. I'm even starting to wonder if I just like anything with a Connecticut broadleaf. The AVO Heritiage is probably my most anticipated. What surprised me today is discovering Camacho is partially owned by Davidoff. Never tried Camacho since I hear so much division. Not really love or hate, but a lot of like and dislike.

The only Davidoff I've had was a Primero Nicaragua Maduro. Didn't knock my socks off.

Why couldn't you have mentioned all this before I went to said "local B&M" I would have paid a bit more attention to that Davidoff walk-in!!! I've yet to try one but now they are on my list!

I would rather have one Davidoff at $15 per than three $5 sticks anytime.
