Is blowing smoke rings considered showboating in a bad way? I occassionally cant resist it on a thick creamy smoke, not every puff but once in a while. I've had people notice and tip me a smile and a nod, but yesterday in the B&M a fog audible walk past and said "******* kids"...

I'm in my 30s! Not like I was doing an Irish waterfall or anything...

Haha. I do the same every so often.

If you're relaxed and having a good time, do whatever you want! Cigars are all about having a good time and relaxing; always amazes me when people are crabby at a cigar lounge. Hell, LOUNGE is in the name!

Don't let that sour fog bring you down good Sir. I say carry on with joy! :D

I gave up trying since it's always windy here where I am and I smoke in my backyard. I think I was kind of getting it but with a breeze it was hard to tell.

I still can't for the life of my blow a smoke ring. I tried way back when I smoke cigarettes, but gave up as people said you couldn't do it with inhaled smoke. But now that I'm on cigars, I still just can't get it right. It really bugs me too, lol.

BTW, what is an Irish waterfall?

I do it once in a while. Somehow they usually end up square instead of round. Have not figured that one out yet.

This is an uneducated guess, but I'm thinking an Irish waterfall is like a French inhale. Yea or nay?

I would have responded with, "Crotchety old bastard."

I can't do it for the life of me. Wish I could.

Dang man, you've now got me in an existential crisis! I need to learn how to blow smoke rings!

Anyone have a good tutorial without making me get further on the line to the googles or youtubes?

Easiest way I was taught is to just take a good deep pull off the cigar make an open circle shape with your mouth and without blowing any air close your jaw with a little speed and with a little work adjusting for speed and such you should be able to blow a smoke ring. Must be no breeze though if your outside.

I'm kind of surprised more people can't do it. Is it kind of like retro-haling, where it either comes super natural or you have to work really hard at it? I've been able to do both with steady success since day one.

Maybe I'm just a natural smoker. It's already become apparent to me that my body only craves the most unhealthy things anyhow. It makes sense that I would be good at it!

OK, I'm gonna hafta call security...Don't bother gathering your things, we'll bring them to you in a box after we escort you away from the premises. I hope you're not too attached to the normal usage of your fingers, 'cause it just aint gonna be the same when we're done giving you what for...

Kinda like a rusty trombone but it involves a cigar somehow.

So an Irish waterfall is when smoke is allowed to escape the mouth and is inhaled through the nose. It's 'Irish' because it goes up instead of down.

As for how to blow smoke rings, with a mouth full of smoke open your lips like you would say 'oo', but pull your tongue to the back of your mouth. Now lift your tongue up and forward sharply, think about try to say 'nnnnnga'.

If it doesn't work people might think you have problems though...

I once blew a perfect smoke ring and was amazed...but haven't been able to repeat it.

There are three common methods:

1) Tongue
2) Cough
3) Jaw

I can't do it, at any rate.

Knew a guy who was so good at it, the rings would shoot out from his mouth and travel more than halfway across the room before starting to dissipate. They had an interesting internal rotation that's hard to describe where the inner part of the ring would spin and become the outer part of the ring. I think this gave them some sort of structural integrity as he could blow them even in a breeze.

My uncle's like that, give him a cigarette and he can send smoke rings across a room

For the record, any topic starting with 'blowing', needs to end with 'shit up with gunpowder related products'...YMMV....

Actually ALL smoke rings have this property: they are a vortex and stable because of the angular momentum producing inertia. The reason that some smoke rings travel further is that the vortex is spinning quicker, therefore has a higher angular momentum which takes longer to lose energy to the surroundings and therefore travels further.

An analogy is the idea of a bicycle: when the wheels are spinning it is easy to remain upright, but when you come to a stop you fall over. With a faster initial speed the bike will travel further before stopping.

What's really cool is that Dolphins are the masters of toroidal vortices...
