Fratello Lance: BOught Saturday, from a known B&M, well humidified. NO burn issues at all, but no TASTE, either.
I burned it about a 1/2", and gave it the benefit. Put it properly out, figuring I'd try it on a fresh palate in the a/m.
Fired her up with my coffee on Sunday morning. I couldn't go another inch. Tossed in the firepit, BLEH! $8 down the tube.
AF 858 Maduro corona: Bought yesterday. Couldn't get past an inch, knowing I had the leftover stub of one of my faves that I
needed to burn. Out the window it went. $6
La Gloria Cubano Petite natural (from a tin): Found it at the bottom of my dor from last year. Forgot about it. Burned it on the way into work today, but tossed it half-way. Did nothing for me.
I don't know I'd try another Fratello, based on that one bad stick. Having had other tasty AFs and LGCs, I've not
entirely written them off, LOL.
What are some of your recent disappointments?

I'll rarely toss a stick that early, if ever unless it starts to unravel on me in a big way.
I'll clip back to 2/3 and relight to see how it goes generally. Then to 1/2, then to 1/3. By that point I feel it's had a fair bite at the cherry.
The only stick that failed this to date was a VS.

Diesel Delirium. Big beautiful cigar, lovely presentation, but no flavor! It wasn't just me, as my father in law was trying one at the same time. We both pitched it at an inch or 2 in.

Guys, I've had MANY smokes that were meh until the second half, and my socks were knocked off! e.g. Diesel HoTD, CAO mx2. You could find you're missing out on some enjoyment there.

I've not had the lance yet, but I've had both the corona and the boxer. Thought they were both pretty good; the boxer good enough that I bought another.

I was smoking an un-banded Nicaraguan the other day that had an amazing flavor profile but the draw was so tight that I gave up on it after about 15 minutes. It was like trying to suck a golf ball through a garden hose.

I've given up on a cigar for construction issues. I believe only twice in my life have I chucked one in the first half for taste.

Agreed. I always want to give it the benefit of the doubt and cross my fingers that it will redeem itself in the second half, which, often times it does.

No offense but those are not really premium cigars. I am not saying they are bad cigars, but I would not call them premium, chalk it up to changing tastes or just a couple bad cigars.
Forget em and move on :)

Remember folks, this is from the man who inflicted upon himself the 'Po Boy Masochist Extravaganza', which involved smoking (among others) a Duque and a Ron Mexico down to the nub. :D I certainly wouldn't expect him to discard a cigar because of the taste! :D :D :D
For me it was a Rodrigo Corona Project. Loved the flavor but just couldn't keep the damn thing lit. Only stick I've tossed so far this year.

Don't think I have ever given up on a smoke in the first half for flavor issues. OP, are you saying that you save cigars to smoke later after putting them out? I tried that once and it was a horrible experience. :puke::puke:

I have tossed several sticks within an inch. I have tossed a couple sticks after 1/2 inch in even. Not worth my time to give them a chance. Mostly they are cheaper sticks. If it is a known descent or good stick I will give them an honest chance. But I have not bought a cheap stick since early on in the hobby. I have tossed a Curley head, Quorum(first week of the hobby and recommended by tobacco shop, yeah I don't go there anymore as it is pretty much a cigarette shop.) I have tossed Macanudo's, Gurkhas, and a few others. Yes I know most of these are not expected to blow your mind. These were all before I was on a cigar forum for guidance. Now I read reviews before I venture out to buy cigars. Rookie mistakes :)

I've given up due to this a few times, but never before about half way. For flavor, The last I tossed was an Alec Bradley...think it was Family Reserve. It tasted like a cigarette...yuck.

I've tossed a couple of cheap sticks early that were just nasty from the get-go, but rarely do I give up before halfway.
One of my favorite regular smokes doesn't come alive until the end of the first third.

Our marketing manager did that when he first started working here. He had no cigar experience and thought that was what you were supposed to do. Needless to say the humidor was ruined.

Construction is the only reason I've tossed a cigar and more specifically, TIGHT draw. I've also never been able to fix a tight draw. I've tried boring them through with a poker with no success. Never tossed one for taste.

Well, several of you have inspired me now to whip out the cutter next time.
H-man, I smoke during my 20-25mins to work. So, I can usually start one in the am, and have it fairly well-finished on the drive home.
You just have to follow a couple of tips, and you will find that MOST sticks are agreeable with at least one re-light this way.
I cut-off the cherry with my Swiss knife, preferrably. Or, at least knock it mose of the way off with the edge of my key, or a suitable surface like a concrete block wall. Definitely do not 'tamp' it out, as one would with a cigarette. Then, blow forward to purge whatever smoke is in there. Lastly, I put it into a cigarillo tin, or tube of some sort, so that it doesn't dry-out too much while in the heat of my car. In the house, I may slip it back into its cello, If I can.

hell to the no.
100% NO!
If the stick have been out for at most 5-10 mins its done for.
whatever dead smoke is in there (even after a purge) well Funk-defy that cigar like Estelle Gettys dead crotch.

Yeah, I've never had any luck re-lighting a cigar that's been out for any significant time. If it goes out while a run to the can, it's fine to relight, but any longer and . . . yuk!
I'm reminded that I have tossed sticks for tight draw many times. Nothing frustrates me more than thinking that I am going to relax with a good smoke and then having to work at it to get any smoke.
In fact, a tight draw will often cause me to write off an entire line of smokes. Padron 1926s are never tight. I don't understand why others can be.
My only Davidoff, a Nicaragua, was so tight that I couldn't smoke it, and I haven't been willing to risk that kind of cash on another. When the Macanudos were tight I was like, oh well, but with the coin Davidoff charges, I expected better.
I almost never toss a stick. If it's bad, I smoke it anyway as it really helps build an appreciation for a good stick next time around and that good stick typically ends up tasting great.

That's a big no to the relights. Even with cutting and purging the heck out of the cigar, there's still stale smoke inside the stick, it just doesn't taste as good. I just make it a point to not smoke something I can't finish.
My father-in-law does this. He'll start smoking a cigar, and then let it go out and have to relight it three times. He'll let it go out again, and then start smoking it an hour later. Granted, he usually smokes Curly Heads, so I'm not sure how the relights could make them taste worse.

I normally will only toss a cigar if I have major construction problems, or if it has a few problems and tastes horrible. I can deal with flavors I don't like as long as it is smoking well, but I will not struggle to smoke a cigar.

I'm surprised to see the animus at relights. I'm simply not experiencing the disappointment many of you seem to have, mostly
with the taste. I've only had a couple that I didn't care for upon the relight.
I guess for those that havent' tried it, I just would encourage you to not immediately throwout a cigar you can't finish,
or have let die on it's own. Clip the ash back to "fresh" leaf, so you're not trying to relight over ash or charred portions.
You may be surprised.

Nothing has tasted very good the last week or so. Food, beverage or smokes. I think it's all the pollen here, as my truck has a chartreuse glow to it from all the pollen in the air...

I toss most new sticks within the first inch. There are actually only a handful of cigars I like, and maybe 3 that I really like. Most I try I can't stand.
Of course the majority of what I try wouldn't be classified as "premium." [emoji6]

I get the whole "give it some time to come around" point of view. But, when time is limited and you simply aren't getting any satisfaction from a cigar, and you have dozens to hundreds of others to choose from, well yeah I'm gonna punt and go with something else.

Well, the last one I tried I liked quite a bit.. Illusione Rothschild.
Otherwise it's all over the place, no way to predict. For example, I love Diesel Coronas but hate all other Diesel vitolas and the other Diesel lines.

that's like speed dating with cigars. Shame they can't roll a sample sized cigar.
I always make it at least half way before tossing one. I can't say I have ever had one redeem itself, but I have had some turn bitter for a few puffs near the end, just to smooth back out through the nub.
As far as relighting I used to do it when I was in the sandbox but I always cut an inch, purged and stored in an aluminum tube.
Sure they didn't taste great, but I don't remember them tasting that bad either. I haven't done it since, I just smoke an appropriate vitola and if surprise plans interrupt toss it, and start a new one later if I can.

i have to agree with shemp on this on. relights are just not worth it at all. why risk the flavor after it out. relights are more for someone who smokes cigars instead of cigarettes. i work with a guy that smokes the same backwoods on smoke breaks instead of cigarettes
