I have 2 samplers containing Avo Classics, a favorite, and CAO Golds, and I'm looking to spend my hobby fund on a single that's also of medium strength that's under $7 from CI. Looking I found a Rocky Patel, but figured I ought to ask if I passed up something, though I must confess to being hesitant to buy something with a weird name. I'm looking both for something that equalls an Avo but may also be 1/3 the cost as I'd like to find a box that can show up to my door for no more than $100.
Suggestions?

I'd consider something comparable with another vendor (I'm also looking at a small travelin humidor for under $20.
Avo Classics are a must as I know I enjoy them.

I really enjoy the rocky patel CT, Also the Ave Maria. Avo is a great smoke but the others I mentioned I smoke on a regular basis.

I'll throw out to give the CAO Black a try...
I find it to be a good smooth, creamy cigar (especially after some resting). Boxes can be had for well under $100...

I will second the Ave Marias for an affordable, medium smoke. The RP Connecticuts are ok, but I'm not much of a CT fan to begin with.
I also like the Room 101 Big Payback, but it might be a tad stronger than you are looking for.

If your looking for a travel humidor...Herfadors can be had for real cheap on Cbid... got a 5ct for $7 and a 10ct for $10.

You can find Jaime Garcia REs for under $5 at times online...In my opinion those blow anything Rocky makes out of the water.

Good call
Also if you wanna keep it mild and flavorful and plan on ordering from CI, La Perla Habana Black Pearl Rojo is really good. You can get a box for well under $100.

If you wanted to pick up some CAO Black cigars, today is a good day:

Avo is blended by H. Kelner who also does Davidoff, so I'd check out their budget blends - 3x3, 4x4, and Private Stock. I don't get the "being hesitant to buy something with a weird name" - you're cutting yourself off from a lot of great smokes, depending on what you consider "weird." Since you seem to like mild cigars, Verdadero for example is excellent, cheap, and totally underrated.

Chateau Fuente is a good mild conn for about $80 per box

Agree with these, with a bit of rest I get tastes of raisin bread from them

And I agree about the Fuente. Can't go wrong there.
Yep, definitely a raisiny flavor on those Verdaderos, plus cashews and cream, and perfect construction on every one I've smoked. Ironically, I think the fact that they're organic actually puts a lot of people off because they assume it's a gimmick. No idea if it impacts the flavor at all, I just know that along with La Libertad it's one of the great $2 smokes.

I love the 3x3 & 4x4 for a nice laid back smoke....

By weird I mean names such as Acid or Deisel, things that don't make me think of a cigar. It just doesn't promote the idea I'm dealing with a quality cigar despite the fact it may be excellent. To me it may as well have a My Little Pony on the band. And I understand it's not really fair, but it is what it is for me...

Yeah, I'm with you with those.... I'm sure there are some great smokes out there with terrible names. A lot of guys swear by Fighting Cocks!

Yea, couldn't do a Fighting Cock either. It's just a bit too weird for me. I couldn't ask company with a straight face if they'd like to try one.
Funny you caught me before I edited my post as I didn't want to throw Gurkha out there too, though the name is a bit strange.

I'm torn between an Ave Maria, Jaime Garcia RE, La Perla Habana Black Pearl Rojo, and a Rocky Patel CT...
It was mentioned that the Jaime beats a Patel. A friend had recommended some sort of RP, but I don't recall what he said. I figure it wasn't the one in question though.
Many of the others aren't offered as a single at CI. I discounted the CAO as I'll have 10 of their Gold's and want to try another brand.
Help with the final selection is sought!

The Garcia is my vote...

I'd take any Garcia stick over the others listed. But that's just me.

I would suggest the Rojo, but that is only because I went through a box of them compared to one or two of the RP & JG each
everyones tastes are different, why not try a couple of each brand you listed? i dont think shipping wouldnt cost any extra
i dont know that youll find something that equalls an Avo at 1/3 the cost, but you may find some you enjoy very much for their own qualities

I'm at the end of my monthly hobby funds of $100. This is a part of the reason I'm looking for a box of good medium cigars for that cost so as I don't need to hold out a month. I like waiting on those brown trucks each month!
The 5 pack of Avo Classic Robustos sell for $40, but the sampler with those 5 Avo's along with 5 CAO Gold's is just $35, which doesn't make sense, but I'm all in with 2 of those!
2 to 1 for the Jaime's.

I order tomorrow and figure I'll forgo the herf in favor of each of those singles. Better to have more trial cigars I believe.
I'm looking forward to analyzing the cigars that were voted on including the RP as I talked to my friend and that was his vote. It's what made me decide to get them all instead of the herf.

You can't go wrong with the Jaime's. It's a very nice cigar with a very nice price point. :stogie:

Caldwell Sevillanas. Inexpensive, but a great mild smoke.

I decided to go beyond my budget and order the herf too. I figure that on cbid I'd not necessarily save much, if any as if have to pay additional shipping ($10 + $6 for shipping).
