View Full Version : Tracking down some Amphora Red

My grandfather who's been in a loosing battle with Alzheimer was a pipe smoker when I was a kid. He gave it up many years ago but I still remember the smell of his pipe. Any time I've smelled a pipe burning since I was a kid it's always reminded me of spending summers with him. It's actually the main reason I've decided to get into pipe smoking is being that I'm over half the country away it somehow (strange I know) makes me feel like I'm not so far from home. He's really taken a turn since we moved west so in my mind he's still the witty, advice filled man I once knew and even though I'd give anything to be there it makes me wonder if I'm better off not seeing him on his downward slope. They're actually looking to see if they still have his old pipe for me, which I'll probably never smoke but would deeply cherish.

So to the point of my rambling I'm just wondering if anyone knows where a guy could track down some Amphora Red tobacco. I was able to find out that it wasn't Captain Black but Amphora red that was his go to smoke. I've checked with 4noggin and smokingpipes (2 known canadian friendly sites) and I don't see it on their sites. Does anyone know if it's still being made or where a guy could track some down? Thanks for any help.

I've never heard of this website, but they ship internationally.

Not sure it they are reputable or not.

Thanks. I've read some sketchy things about them but from scouring google the past hour, they might be the only ones online available to me. I know there's a place in Ontario that sells it but wonderful Canadian tobacco laws prohibit shipping tobacco sales to other provinces. I have read it's common in a lot of gas station/convenience stores in Canada so while at work tomorrow I'll ask a couple of my customers if they stock it. Not holding my breath tho as there's no good tobacco shops around here, nothing but cigarette smokers locally.

Don't give up!
You'll find some.

They have it here in Japan. But it's about 15 dollars for one of the pouches. It's a shame that it's not more readily available because it's a very pleasant smoke. I'll keep my eyes open if any of the shops here ship internationally.

Well stopped at all the places in the town I work today and no one carries it. 1 place said they could order it in for me if I couldn't find it anywhere else but they didn't seem too eager to do so and I don't want to have to buy alot of if so at least I have a place to get it if I can't find it else where. Going to Regina on the weekend so might try to see if there's somewhere in the city that has it...

I could be wrong but I think there's a match that is damn close to the original.
But I don't know where to procure the real stuff.

There is a match, and JimInks did a review of it if I recall. Unfortunately, I think it is a P&C exclusive, and I'm not sure they ship to the great white north.

I see on smokingpipes they have a Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. has a "red style"
Quoted from the site - "The first idea of GH was to do a replacement for Amphora Red in the U.K. The Pipe Club of London as well as other Pipesmoker Clubs tested it and found it very similar. This is an Air Cured blend of Burleys and Virginias."

Might order some to try while I'm searching for the real thing. From what I've read it's quite commonly found in Canada, apparently just not in the area I live.

I'm sure somebody carries Amphora Red Match (or Euphoria, as it is also called) besides P&C, but I don't know who that would be. Hopefully, you'll find the original, which is sold in Canada as you know. Skandinavik Aromatic is a little like AR.

My mother now said she thinks it might have been the brown not red that he smoked, they asked him but he couldn't remember so I think I'll try to track both down. They're still looking but it's not looking like they kept his old pipe. Kind of sad about this but hopefully it will turn up. Though I guess they have an old wooden ashtray he made when he was a kid so that'll be a neat piece to have as well.

On another forum I once wrote a topic on how I envy smokers abroad as I’m residing in South Africa and most tobacco shops here don’t really cater for the pipe smoking enthusiasts. I can only imagine your frustration. The local tobacconists here mostly imports Amphora, Peterson and Mc Barren tobacco. The brown is the regular and the red is a full aromatic. If your struggle continues and there is no other means for you to get hold of Amphora I might as well get you some and ship it over.
I really hope your dad's pipe turn up.
Cheers
Rick

If it turns out being the red, and you can wait till August and are still interested, I will buy you a pouch and send it to you when I am back in the states.
