I'm sure most of you have heard of the Digger Challenge, which is to smoke an LFD Digger (forearm-sized double ligero churchill) in 45 minutes. I'm not sure if other conditions are stipulated, such as "and not barf," and I don't know what the standard prize is - free LFD for life? Date with Kate Upton? I don't really care bcs I'm not about to take that challenge.

But I am intrigued at the whole prospect, the same way I'm intrigued by self-flagellating religious zealots or people who pull trucks with various bodily appendages. My own Digger Challenge is, can I smoke one at all, and if so, how long would it take?

So I lit it up and started the iphone stopwatch.

First impressions - whoever succeeds at this challenge must be quite gifted in the sucking department. It's a pretty solid stick, and the draw is very tight - I'm growing a new set of tonsils. Flavor's pretty good - sweet, dark maduro flavor with some nuttiness and citrus undertones.

As I write, I'm at the 1:20 mark and less than halfway thru it. Flavor hasn't really changed much approaching the midpoint. Cheeks and tongue are getting a little fatigued, but the draw is a little easier now.

A very brave go of it Bruce! 45 minutes is crazy, that's hotboxing a regular Churchill much less that hoss. 8.5 inches if I remember correctly.

Yes, that's not an optical illusion - the length of the stick is almost the same as the beam of my laptop :)

Update: a little over 2 hrs in, and about a third left to go. Flavor has change a bit - a little "darker,"' with some hardwood flavor. No nic sickness, but I'm definitely aware of the vitamin N. One trip to restroom. Slight wrapper splitting, but I think that's due to some massaging I had to do to loosen up the draw earlier.

They had those at my old B&M. I reached for one a couple times but just couldn't follow through with it.

Update - 3:15, a couple inches left. Starting to get a little bitter (the cigar, not me - I have a relatively positive outlook).

I think it the Digger To The Death Challenge was to smoke one in under 90 mins without getting sick. How long did it end up taking you to kill that beast?

Called it quits at about 3.5 hrs. There was about 1.5-2" left, so I probably could have kept going, but the flavor was really off at that point and it was past my bedtime.

Props to you thats a damn long smoke. 3.5 hours is more time than I care to spend smoking the same cigar.

Agree - it was just a mountain I had to climb, and having done so, don't feel the need to climb again :)

Bruck, I just picked one up, hope to burn it Sat. Like you, my challenge is simply to survive it. I am a Viaje enthusiast of late, so hopefully I am somewhat prepared...

Staring at this monster spanning the length of my 4-finger ashtray, I am reminded of the opening of Star Wars, those paragraphs reaching to infinity (and beyond). Clipped it with hedge clippers, toasted it with a man-portable flame thrower, and started in @ 1833hrs...

Trent, glad to see you survived the challenge. I thought for sure your kids would be asking mommy why daddy is on his hands and knees in the front yard talking to Ralph. Well done!
