View Full Version : Taking Torch Lighter on Airlines: Colibri Tranzpack
If you are traveling domestically, and want to bring a torch lighter, do this:
1. Buy a Colibri Tranzpack. http://www.amazon.com/Colibri-Tranzpack-Approved-Airline-Lighter/dp/B000J0KUB0. Better price: http://www.elighters.com/cotr.html but out of stock at moment.
2. Print off this FAA bulletin and circle in magic marker or highlighter the picture of the Tranzpack on the second page.
http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ash/ash_programs/hazmat/passenger_info/media/Airline_Passengers_Lighters_Faq.pdf
3. Put your lighter in the Tranzpack, roll the FAA bulletin over it with the picture facing out, and put the whole thing in a gallon Ziplock. The idea is that any TSA agent seeing the Tranzpack also sees the FAA bulletin making it clear it is legal.
4. Put in your checked baggage. Will not be allowed in carryon.
I wouldn't put your Dupont Maxijet in there in case the TSA agent can't read or doesn't care. But I do take my Bugatti B-1001 which I purchased on CBid for ~$15 in it. [I haven't yet gotten the slip in my luggage indicating that TSA opened my bag, but will post when that happens.]
(This is passed on from previous forum, when a member posted the link to the FAA site -- there was a lot of confusions and contradictory statements before that.) Hope this helps someone.

I wish I trusted them enough to not take a lighter...sadly, I don't have much faith in the .gov Nonetheless, a good post, sir.
I just bought one at my destination last time I traveled.

I have had no problems using the Tranzpak going on 6+ years now. Just insure it is in the checked bag.

At the price of the Tranzpack I think I'd rather just stop at Walmart when I land and get a Ronson ;)

That's why I pack a $15 lighter. Just in case. But so far, so good.
By the way, I have (and love) a IM Corona Double Corona soft flame lighter. You are allowed to carry that on a plane on your person. First two times I took it, TSA guy had me open it and light it to verify soft flame. Last three trips, with it in the small tray going through X-ray, they haven't even questioned it. Perhaps TSA is getting better at recognizing torch vs soft flame...

When E-lighters gets them back in stock, they were only $10.
When I travel, I am sometimes just using shuttles and can't get to a Walmart, + I've seen people complain that some Walmarts didn't have Ronsons at a particular time.

You're welcome. I had seen the Tranzpack ads, but also seen TSA variations on what was allowed. The BOTL who posted the link to the FAA bulletin made the difference, because I can now carry with the lighter the government approval of what I have it in. Good luck. I just like having my own trusty lighter if possible.

Nice, I love a soft flame. I actually ordered that same lighter on Amazon and the box was stolen off my front porch! They refunded me and I ended up picking up something else locally. I'd still like to get a Double Corona at some point...looks like a fantastic lighter.

Do it. I am using it whenever possible. What I like it (1) it works flawlessly, (2) it looks great, (3) you can adjust the flame without a screwdriver, and (4) it works from a flint. No piezoelectric thingie to wear out. I found the flints at lightersdirect.com for much less than at Amazon......

IM Corona plans to discontinue their famous Double Corona line of lighters. Upon hearing of this news (passed on to us by their Primary US Distributor), I was sort of taken back a bit. The Double Corona lighter is one of the finest soft flame lighters ever introduced to the market. Each hand made of high quality seals and brass internals. Nicely finished with some of the most durable and exotic materials known to man.
So, I asked why? The answer was simple, one gentleman (yup 1 person! Incredible!) was responsible for brazing the fuel tanks and he has decided to pursue his next career, retirement! Congratulations!
There is still some good news, IM Corona has introduced this year the Laurel line, it is gorgeous and nicely refined. We can also bet that Corona will continue to innovate and bring new quality products to the market.

According to FAA bulletin I linked, no. Has to be on person or carryon.
{I can't say if you put one in a Tranzpak that it would be a problem. But I am walking on with a soft flame in my pocket with no problem [after letting it go through X-Ray.}

Good advice 99% of the time.
I'm the 1% magnet for the TSA agents who can't read and or don't care. When flying to a HERF I'll ship my cigars and lighters ahead of time to save hassles. I've been in the back rooms for searches enough times to not even bother worrying anymore about what will happen "this time" while the TSA is looking through my carry on. And I've even had MATCHES removed from my checked luggage with a letter inserted telling me I didn't need that many, so the excess books/boxes were removed.
