View Full Version : Mo Smoke cigar lounge (Home cigar room)
Hello everyone, I'm starting my cigar/lounge man cave. I'm bringing my thread from another place here, because I've been informed this is the place to be. I'm merging two threads into one. My questions regarding CFM for my room, and the thread I plan on putting info on the room build. Here it goes! ANY info or comments welcome!
The making of:
Mo Smoke Cigar Lounge - Home cigar room/Man cave
These are rough shots of how things look right now.
1435
The wood beam is pretty much where the wall will be put up. The room is going to be 15x14x8.
1436
Partial bathroom I will be keeping. Side door to my house.
1437
Just another angle. This wall and door hides a walk in closet roughly 3x5. This week starts demolition of this wall, and wall inside this closet opening up a little more space under the stairs.
1438
Closet again, and wall where my old diecast cars used to be, where I'll hang the TV.
I'm anxious to get started. I'm trying to figure out how I'm doing my ventilation system.
If you have any advice or suggestions please feel free.
Photos will come once a week. I'm hoping to have this up and smoking by the Mayweather fight...we'll see.
Thanks guys! I'm up now 4:30 AM I'm so excited to get started. 8:30 AM the contractor will be ringing my bell LOL!!
Ok, This is the HVAC blueprint I came up with based on the advice I have got from various sources including this as well as other threads here and abroad. Tell me what you guys think.

We're knocking down a couple of walls today, and possibly cutting the ceiling to see how we're running things above head. Last week we measured 13" above to play with, so we'll see. More pics coming!
Thank you Quo155, please let me give you a little more info so you can possibly answer the question as proficiently as you can. Thank you BTW.
The home the room is being built is in North NJ so it gets cold in the winter. Its my recreation room. The space I'm using is approximately 270 sq feet.
Doing the calculation for CFM I was given a number of 300 cfm however I know I'll need more than that especially if I have up to 5 smokers.
I was thinking 1500-1700 cfm exhaust pulling from two ceiling vents straight out of the house. I'm separating the hvac of my house and this room (not using dampers). So I have a few questions:
1. Is 1500-1700 cfm overkill? I'm using a speed regulator to adjust output depending the amount of smokers.
2. If I'm using that amount of cfm on exhaust, for fresh air, what should I do?
● Use no force air return, and allow the air to be pulled in naturally from the exhaust fan pulling OUT the air? (From negative pressure)
● Buy a fan (what cfm?) for air intake to PULL fresh air in from outside?
● Should I buy a duct heater? - The room will have 2 baseboard heaters as well as the fake fireplace heater.
● I've seen photos of the exhaust and fresh air intake side by side on the outside of the house in others cigar room. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a fresh air intake? Wouldn't the intake pull the cigar smoke from the exhaust right back in?
I was going to have my exhaust and fresh air intake on opposite sides of the house.
EXCFM

If you suggest both a fan to pull in fresh air AND a duct heater, will the heater warm the air as fast as the fan is pulling it in? Other words...how do you pair the two? (A intake fan and duct heater)
Lastly...Air conditioning.
I'm thinking of going portable AC and connecting it to the return duct for fresh air to the AC unit. I'm not sure about the best way to do AC on a small budget so if you guys have any suggestions let me know. There is no windows in or near the room.
Thanks!
Didn't mean to ask so many questions at once, but it's all HVAC related and I need to start my purchases ASAP. We're starting demolition on a couple of walls and ceiling this sunday.

Hey Cion! For your room size and location, I'd shoot for 700cfm exhaust, minimum.
1. The 1500+ really is overkill, IMHO and I'd keep it between 700cfm and 900cfm...as long as the number is more than whatever you decide to feed into the room. A speed regulator is a great idea!
2. 675cfm is about right for fresh air, as long as the number is less than your exhaust. It doesn't sound like you'll need a duct heater as you'll have plenty from other sources. If you're not supplying the room from your main system, then I would use a fan to pull from the outside, in...672cfm.
Portable AC's can work in your area (not here where I live!) and you can get a decent EdgeStar unit that does not require a window, you can install it with the supplied ducts to a wall with vents. It pulls air from the outside and from the inside. They're not real efficient at cooling down here but reviews say they work in your area. They are also a great dehumidifier, as a bonus...if even needed where you are. They run around $500-$600.
Whatever route you decide to go, I hope this info helps some...

New Question - Cion
Hello Tommy thanks for your input, so you say you would go for a MINIMUM off 700CFM but 1,500 CFM is overkill. What do you think would be that magic number then? I'm looking at three ultra quiet 280CFM fans, totalling 840. Do you think that would DEFINITELY do it or should I go 1000CFM?
So you believe I should buy a fan to PULL air back into the room, but keep it below the CFM going out...
So, you don't believe just having an open vent to outside would be enough with the exhaust pulling air out? I thought it the exhaust fan would cause a negative pressure, and would pull air from anywhere it can get it...that would be that open direct vent...wouldn't it?
Tommy you didn't answer this...I'm curious to your thoughts (below)
I've seen photos of the exhaust and fresh air intake side by side on the outside of the house in others cigar room. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a fresh air intake? Wouldn't the intake pull the cigar smoke from the exhaust right back in? (photo below)
CFM 1442
You said not to buy a duct heater because you believe I would have sufficient heat with the baseboards and electric fire place, but you don't think the room would get cold in this up north 10-20 degree winters air blowing directly into the room?
I'm sorry If I'm asking the same questions or questioning certain things you answered, I just want to be sure, and I want to order everything today.
Thanks Tommy I really appreciate your opinion/facts!

I may be late at answering (& if I am, I'm sorry!)...

I think the 840cfm will work perfectly, go for it!

Yes...I did, but I've not sat and looked over this with my engineering hat as I should have...I would pull fresh air in, BUT...you're right in that it would be cold air during Winter. If you have air that is able to come into the room from other areas, under door(s), etc...in which I am sure you do, then you may not need the outside to inside air fan. Thus, not needing a duct heater. If you do pull in outside air, just to have it as an option (it really helps "flush" out the room quicker...then I'd recommend the duct heater.

You are correct and I would never recommend the two be close! If you can put on different sides of the room (if two exterior walls), then please do...or at the least, try and separate as much as possible. But, this will only apply if you are bringing in outside air.

You are fine, ask away. However, it looks like you may have already ordered stuff and if so, I am sorry for my delay in getting back to you. I don't frequent this forum anymore and I only log in to see if you've needed anything else! I just hope I was able to help you in some way...and not confuse you!

Thank you so much Tommy! (When ever you see this lol)
No you weren't late. I decided to wait a few days to get a response or two. I didn't want to get stuff and it wasn't correct. However between you and my carpenter okaying this setup I'm going to order the fans. Thank you again for answering all of my questions especially the one concerning the exhaust and intake being so close. I'm putting the exhaust and intake on separate sides of the house. The intake will go on the side of my house with windows and the exhaust will go to the side without windows (so my wife and tenant doesn't have to smell smoke when they have their windows open.) Thanks again Tom!

lol I'm not completely sold on that name yet, and the wife doesn't like it either. I came up with the name trying to think of something cool to go with two letter marques with lights I found and purchased. The letters are M and S. I plan on painting the name on the wall with these two leading letters.
so, if you guys can help think of something maybe cooler than the current MO Smoke, please drop a name. If I choose a name given, the person who gave such name will receive a bomb from me. Only thing is both letters have to be used in the name, as leading letter.
letters again are: M or W...and S.

Hey guys, work has been slow. We are still doing the room, just haven't been that much work done for an update. We pretty much put up the drywall within the last month. Me and my contractor can only work on Sundays, and if he or I aren't available that's a week with no work done (obviously). So, an update with photos will come VERY soon...We ARE still getting it together.

Hey guys, I know it's been a LONG time, just giving an update. The room is pretty much the same right now. The room is STILL in the works, and work has been stalled for a few months due to financial and carpenter situations. Basically, when the money was available the person I had working wasn't available to work, and when he was, the money was tied up. I want you guys to know work will resume around March, and WILL be (for the most part) complete by June 2016. Thank you guys for inquiring, and things are still moving forward...well, will be lol. The cigar room will be complete with photos soon. Any questions, please feel free.

Ok...Going on vacation, so no updates for 2 weeks.
Thanks guys!
Looking Good!!
Thank you!
Just a little update:
We bust the ceiling down some more to run more wires, get ready to start running the duct, and put up the fans. I purchased most of the lights and nick nacks for the room, just a few small things left to buy. Chose to go with floor board heating with a wall controller. So the three heat sources will be, the floor board, fire place (fake), and the heater connected to the fresh air duct, which is controlled by a thermostat. Next week we should have a nice update with all ducts and fans up in the ceiling. Below are a few photos.
Ceiling busted up.

This project sure is coming along nicely! I'm very impressed with how well you seem to have thought this out. Thanks to your super-thorough planning, you'll reap the benefits every time you walk in there for as long as you live in that house.
Again, thanks so much for sharing this us! I'll be doing one of my own soon.

Hey guys, just a quick update. Nothing too special, just a half days work of running wires, and we started running the duct work. We also put up 2 of the ventilation fans. These fans are SUPER quiet, and we tested them as seen without the insulation, fan cover, and sheet rock.
http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac98/cion761/20160403_161538_resized_zpsxdqu6ev4.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/user/cion761/media/20160403_161538_resized_zpsxdqu6ev4.jpg.html)

Next week we'll finish putting in the 3rd ventilation fan, duct, and connect it to the bathroom ventilation fan already up.
Small progress, but we're moving ahead...generally we only have one day a week (Sunday) to do this work, and we spend about 5-6 hours. The hard part is almost over, and then we'll get to the electrical work. These duct joints are taped, and will be sprayed or painted with a 2nd sealer. Insulation will go on top of everything. Ok, any questions or comments and welcome and appreciated. Until next week my friend! :stogie:

Whats up guys! Weekly update, today we spent the day doing more duct work...looord it's a pain in the azz! (If you build it AFTER the room was completed). We had to cut more ceiling, more wood, more metal, bending, scraping and pulling...however, it's coming along! We put up the 3rd ventilation fan, and started cutting the ceiling to connect the bathroom vent to the main ventilation system (with the 3 fans). Next week, we'll finish the exhaust duct work, and put up the fresh air system. We also ran some more wiring for the electrical work, which we will also start next Sunday. :yes!:
Here's a few photos...similar to the last update.
Here is more duct work I had to purchase today.

This is the sealer we decided to go with. Duct tape with air tight seal, and Flex seal spray. I also have Mastic, but not sure if we will use it, this flex seal seems pretty tight with the tape.

Hey just wondering how much are your expenses? I think I might get something done but only if its in budget. Also did contractors go overboard, like hidden prices?
What's up ladies and Gents! Just a weekly update. We thought we would be able to finish up the duct work today, but it turned out to be more work than anticipated. A lot of cutting measuring etc. We finished most of the duct work today though. We connected the bathroom to the main exhaust duct, now all is left of the exhaust is running the last couple of 6" duct outside of the house and installing the exhaust exit. We started and completed most of the fresh air system as well. We put up most of the duct, installed the intake fan and duct heater. We also ran half the duct across and down the wall. All is left is to run the fresh air duct to the other side of the room, and then we can start sealing the walls and ceiling back up...of course AFTER we test everything. So far we tested each piece for power, and everything works. The exhaust fans BLOW like MAD! (as we cut them on and put our hand in the end duct) So, it's going to suck that smoke right out the room easy! Anyway...a few photos below. All and any questions, feel free!
This is the little 50cfm fan in the bathroom that we hooked up to the main exhaust system.

That fan is running through a 4" duct below.

This is the last of the 4" duct that connects to a 4-6" duct reducer, which connects to the 6" main duct.

This is the one of the two fresh air ducts feeding the room.
http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac98/cion761/20160417_222836_resized_zpsxx56f1v2.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/user/cion761/media/20160417_222836_resized_zpsxx56f1v2.jpg.html)
This is the one fresh air duct going in and up the wall, it will run across the ceiling instead of in the ceiling, as there is no room for both duct systems to pass (it's ok, my ceilings are pretty high. I'm 6'1" and have PLENTY of head room.) The 6" duct will actually come down leaving about 4" left in the beam you see it pinned against once it's boxed off, covered with sheet rock, and will have a ladder effect. I plan on decorating it with the walls using molding. Where you see the open tee, is where we are going to run the other fresh air to the other side of the room.
http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac98/cion761/20160417_222850_resized_zps5wuh7qtd.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/user/cion761/media/20160417_222850_resized_zps5wuh7qtd.jpg.html)
The fresh air duct leads up the to this 6" duct heater.

The 6" duct heater runs into a 6" to 8" reducer, to connect to this big boy pulling in all the fresh air this room needs.
http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac98/cion761/20160417_222826_resized_zpsgmv4ao2e.jpg (http://s889.photobucket.com/user/cion761/media/20160417_222826_resized_zpsgmv4ao2e.jpg.html)
We cut the hole and installed the fresh air intake. We didn't finish this install, just put some basic sealer to keep things out until next week., however, everything fits like a charm. BTW, from the fresh air fan, we went to a 8" to 7" reducer, and went out the side of the house with a 7" duct and return.

We'll as Porky Pig would say, "That's all Folks!"...
Until next week!

Hey just wondering how much are your expenses? I think I might get something done but only if its in budget. Also did contractors go overboard, like hidden prices?
Wow, to be honest I lost count...lol. Only because this is 2 years in the making. If I were to guess, I'd say so far (not being done) I'm in the $10 grand range give or take a little. Good thing is, to complete the room, just basics, no electronics, no bar, entertainment center, REAL humidor, or wine rack, I practically bought everything, so there's just a few more hundred to spend on the wood floors, paint and molding. To be honest, I can easily see another 6-10 grand going into the room for total completion (including furniture). We are going to build my bar ourselves, and also the entertainment center which will hold the smaller TV, liquor, and small things like a coffee machine. For the most part, I'm just concerned with getting the MAIN stuff done, which is the exhaust and electrical...so I can smoke my first stick in here, and go "Aaaahhhhh". Everything else will be done in phases. After the basics are done, we will immediately start on the bar, and entertainment center. Other things will be purchased over time. Anyway, I've said A LOT more than what wass asked lol. Be well!

Just read through this whole thread, now I'm hoping he pops back on and update's :)
Hello guys! :cigarette: Man, it's been quite some time. I know you guys are expecting to hear the room was complete, and I've been enjoying smokes in there for years, but unfortunately it's still being done...(Photos coming soon). I am happy on how it's coming along, and I set a time (put my foot down) on getting it complete (Lights, walls/paint, bar & furniture) detailing will be a lifelong thing. Why isn't it done? Well, simply due to life, and doing other things in-between time. Just to keep it short, kids, wife, household things, traveling (Hawaii, Paris, etc.;)), not to mention, it hasn't slowed down my pleasure of having a cigar when I wanted; either I go to the B&M with the guys or have one in my make shift room next to this one lol. Over all, this project is coming a long nicely, and I'm still excited to have my 1st smoke in there...(sitting, relaxing, not testing the exhaust and fresh air system we installed.)
Well, for those of you who were around since we started, and may still be around, here's an update (hope you're not disappointed it's not done, but we are still at it), photos will come VERY shortly...I do want you guys to see the progress. I did change the name to The Brooklyn Way (cigar room).
Any questions, or comments are welcomed! ;)

lol True indeed
Well guys, as promised, here are some recent shots of the room to date. First thing, I changed the name. No longer Mo Smoke, went with something more close and personal to me, my background...Brooklyn NY. So, I changed the room to The Brooklyn Way (cigar lounge).
I'm not looking at too much more time wise before I can say VOILA! This will be a life long project as you should know, but to briefly tell ya what I'm doing to say, "ok. I'm done" (then begins the ins and outs of little things), I'm putting up ceramic tiles on the back end of the wall, wood planks one side, combined with molding to further create the rustic feel I'm going for. The bathroom will be various shades of brown. The AC unit has to be installed (being I separated the house ventilation system from this room...it has it's own), then the furniture...VOILA! lol I'm buying an executive desk to go in here...changed my mind on the bar (because I don't drink more than I smoke); the bar will go in the adjacent room to this which is like a living room area. I'm buying a tower humidor, TV and a few leather chairs. I will SURELY let you guys see the finish project; hope you like it so far.
oh, I will be putting up wood, molding and make a beam look on the ceiling as well. All in due time...all in due time. Well, Until the next update *I promise will not be in another 2 years...lol. As you can see we aren't that far from the finish line, so, updates will come MUCH sooner in the next few months. Looking to get this wrapped up to the beginning stage of life long work this summer. Stay smokey my good people...any questions or comments welcomed.:victorious::cowstogie:

Just a quick update. As we work to complete this project, just wanted to show the latest work in the bathroom. Instead of replacing all of the tiles, sink, toilet, vanity etc. (which would have cost a fortune I don't currently have) I decided to go with painting everything. It's pretty unconventional to paint porcelain but I decided to give it a whack. I'm doing the floors last (for obvious reasons), toilet, sink and walls are pretty much done. I'm adding the little details to everything, and then I'm doing the floors. At that point this bathroom will be out of service (as it is now) for a week or so to dry up and let things seal tight.

Time will tell my friend...time will tell.
That it will. Porcelain is a hard, non-porous, easily disinfected surface that withstands practically any household chemical. None of that can be said for a coat of paint. I wonder how to clean it now...

I am aware my friend. I definitely didn't walk into this without study first. I've been an artist of several mediums for over 30 years, and have applied what I know to securing this the best way possible...or at least what I hope to work. I don't plan on using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials to clean these areas, not to mention, I would never try this in my 2 other (main traffic) bathrooms. This bathroom will hardly be used, and my main concern would be how the paint and sealant would hold up in the toilet sitting under the water. We can only see. The sink and toilet was sealed with a water resistant sealer, so I'm hoping for the best. I have performed scratch test before painting, and don't seem I will have much an issue with that. My main concern is water damage to the paint itself. I plan on cleaning with basic, soft house cleaners...which I also tested with the painted materials before committing to what you see. I can only hope for the best.
What I will say is, this bathroom is over 12 years old...so, it's time for a new toilet etc anyway. So, worst case, I'll be replacing old stuff.
Thank you for your input btw. I appreciate your concern and advice.

Ahh, I get it. So worse case is still not that bad. You've got quite the project there so far. Must be getting anxious to be done with it.

I absolutely am ready to be done, or get into the furnishing. The great thing is I'm done with heavy construction, so a lot of the remaining work I can do myself on my days off...much like this bathroom. I'm not too far away from being in the 1st stage of completion, just this bathroom, wood planks and tile on the walls...and then my humidor.
More photos of the cigar room coming soon.
I know it's been too damn long for anyone to care, but the cigar lounge is finally complete. It took so long for various reasons from, family life, to finding the time and resources needed to finish. Ultimately, I'm extremely happy with it and look forward to many years of smoking it up. Sometime late January I'll be shooting The Brooklyn Way cigar videos for youtube. Thank you! Yes, everything I have done from start to finish are pretty much laid out in the pages, nothing much has changed, and the ventilation equipment is the same and working great. So far I had 4 people smoking in here at once and I didn't even have to utilized the 2 Rabbits I have.

I'm curious...as 2020 has been rough on many, I wonder how your lounge has survived this year? Have there been any changes this year?
I've loved your lounge from the start!
