Was in a Latakia mood tonight so I pulled out some Dunhill 965. I have smoked a few bowls of this so I thought I'd jot down my thoughts on it. I don't try and write a review with only one bowl to go by. I tried that a few times early in my pipe smoking journey and found that my initial thoughts changed after a couple more bowls in different pipes. Anyway here we go.
Name: Dunhill My Mixture 965
Blend: Cavandish, Latakia, oriental and Virginia
Age: New as far as I know (I got it in the NST)
Smoked in: MM Huck Finn
This tobacco packs extremely well. I did it in two steps and then did the swirl by holding my thumb over the bowl just touching the tobacco and spun the pipe 4-5 times to create a twisting of the leaf.
Likewise, it was extremely easy to light and keep going.
It is not picky as to pace and I never had it bite.
The taste is very smooth and balanced. The latakia is very much there without being overwhelming. This is good for me because while I enjoy latakia as a condiment to a good blend, I don't like lat bombs. This is definitely not.
There was a sweetness present at times but it was always subtle. While it appeared time to time, mainly in the 2nd half of the bowl it is definitely not what I would classify as a sweet tobacco.
Overall I like it a lot. Balanced is the word that stays in my mind when smoking it.
The flavor is medium for my tastes.
The strength I would say is mild to medium. After two bowls back to back I felt a little bit of strength, but not an N-bomb by any stretch. Nightcap is noticeable stronger IMO.
This would be a good tobacco to try for someone who wants to try a latakia blend for the first time.
On a five star rating system, I'd give it four.
