What diameter do you recommend for a tamper? Thinking about making a stainless steel tamper inset into some nice wood maybe with a screw out scraper pick or scraper/spoon thingy.

The tampers I made are from a 30-06 cartridge. The diameter is about perfect for any pipe I have.

Oh wait... they were from a .308 cartridge... I imagine aught six would work out about the same

Looked it up... .308 is roughly .473" time to sketch something out. You think it would be okay if the wood was the same diameter as the tamping head? Or should it be a smaller diameter?

I don't think it would be a problem. The old-timer tampers are just a piece of wooden dowel. Thing is, you're a blademaker, right? Why not put a handy little reamer, spoon thing on the other end.

That was the idea, one that screws in. Thanks again for the assist.

You can use whatever shell you feel like. I use whatever matches up to the section of bamboo I am using. I would like to see what you can come up with Mr. Knife maker. You just figured out something to make for the B/S/T section of the forum. If you need someone to test one out i would be willing to do so. Just try in to help out lol. Fingers crossed he falls for it.

Zurg.... how long do you think the blade/scraper should be? I was thinking a 1/4" triangular shaped scraper type thing that comes to a point., that way you can still loosen up a packing and be able to scrape?

LOL
I'm making one... but if I was to make them for sale it won't be made from one piece like this one is. :D
I'm ordering enough material to make a few using production methods.. too bad we don't have a bar feeder on the CNC lathe at school :(
When I do get one made, I'll either do a pass-around or a drawing.

Oh you misunderstand me (LOL) I dont want to buy one. I want you to give me one. These other heathens on the forum can pay for theirs though, that is fine with me. Maybe we can give Tobias a discount though.

The ones I did are a little over an inch. They're a piece of 17-4 PH stainless and I brought them up to H900 so they'd hold up. They'll need a bit of shank on them tho so they'll reach the bottom of the bowl. Maybe 1.5 overall would be a minimum I'd think.

That's a rather unique steel to have lying around? Lo . I'm probably going with 300 series stainless all around and counting on the geometry of the scraper to help prevent bending.

I think a wooden tamping surface is the best.
It grips the tobacco/embers slightly and "swirls" them. It really works great.
