View Full Version : New Bums Introduction Thread

Until we get everything built, I'm just going to start threads in the Main forum and migrate them to the appropriate sub-forums as we progress.

Here goes,

My name's Don and I'm a huge cigar and pipe enthusiast. I've been imbibing in the leaf since high school in the late 1970's. I dabbled in both throughout college and took a rather long hiatus in the 90's to focus on bicycle racing. I'd still smoke the occasional celebratory cigar, but nothing serious. In the late 90's I got pretty serious about storage and honing my palate. I joined Club Stogie in late 2008, just before it was merged into Puff. About a year after that and I was invited to become a moderator for Puff. It was a great job, which I enjoyed very much; the ability to give back to a community, which had given so much to me.

I put a tremendous amount of work into Puff, but enjoyed the incredible camaraderie and friendship we all fostered there. Losing it broke my heart, but since I had no say over the financial aspects and ownership, was powerless to do anything to prevent it's demise.

But, today is a new day and we have a brand new opportunity to recreate ourselves. We can take what we learned from Puff, the good, the bad and the ugly; embrace the good and kill the bad and ugly.

I'm just happy to have a new place where we can carry on the great tradition we all put our hearts and souls into, without fear of some uncommitted third party spoiling it.

Thanks for reading this and I'm damn glad to see ya!

Don

Looking forward to a new era post Puff.

I'm Eric and have dabbled in cigars since the early 90's. A cigar or two here and there and occationally a pipe for the next 15 years or so. Always had them on hand but it wasn't until I hit up a cigar store with a great owner and friendly staff that I became hooked. The Kristoff maduro (fantastic!) the owner gave me sealed the deal. Wasn't too long after that when I started searching the web and came across Puff early 2009. Lurked for 6 months before joining and then the journey took off.
Met some incredibly knowledgable and friendly people on Puff and it became a home away from home. Lots of trades, bombs, and passes gave me a deep appreciation of cigars from different regions.

Fast forward to 2013 and I was asked to be a mod. Surprising isn't it! Thoroughly enjoyed all of my time there and am looking forward to making cigarbum my new cigar forum home.

PS. Been a member of other cigar forums for a while too. On any of them my username, piperdown, is the same.

Looking forward to hearing from all of you fellow cigar enthusiasts!

Hey all, I'm Blake... and I'm a cigaraholic.
I'm from the province of Nova Scotia but currently live in Saskatchewan up here in the great white north. Pretty new to cigars but really enjoying my, both feet first, jump into the hobby. I've always had an interest but for one reason or another (mostly lack of disposable income) I've never really gotten into the hobby other than the odd captain black or old port gas station cheapies (term used loosely here in Canada). Summer of 2014 I stumbled upon the 2 threads on puff about Companies that deliver to Canada and became hooked on the idea, lurked around for a while then finally joined the forum and pulled the trigger on my first order and have been hooked ever since.

Recently my grandfather has been diagnosed with dementia/Alzheimer and being this far away as his condition deteriorates I've spent alot of time remembering him as a child. He was a pipe smoker for years and the smell of someone burning a bowl always throws me back to spending summers visiting him. So because of all this, along with my journey into cigars, I'm taking the first steps into pipe smoking as well. Awaiting my first order as we speak and can't wait to jump into that side of the hobby too.

With both of these similar hobbies I'm sure, with time, I'll find the same amazing comradery and advice on here as the was on the previous site. And just maybe, in time, I'll be qualified enough to add to it and help another noob get off the ground in this amazing hobby.

Wow! This is awesome! I just looked at the "who's online" and for being up just a few hours, having 7 recognizable names on is pretty damned amazin'!

Guys, we're here to build this. Build it the way WE want it. The guys who show up in the next few weeks will be the guys who have the most say in where we end up. The great thing is, the people who've shown interest are ALL guys I know and respect and know how to roll on a gentlemen's hobby forum. It's like there are suddenly 7 mods online, HA! :D

I'm Chris from Indianapolis. Was only a member of Puff for about 3 months, but happy to be here. I've smoked cigars for as long as I can remember, but only within the last year have I really taken it up as a hobby. I quit drinking and smoking cigarettes 3+ years ago, so this is my only vice now. For me, the online community, and this group in particular, have been invaluable for me as far as learning to enjoy the hobby correctly. The people on Puff have made the hobby so much more enjoyable, both with their willingness to share their immense wealth of knowledge, and as just genuinely good, friendly BOTL/SOTLs.

Just glad this community will continue to stay together.

Hello All. My name is Jack and I've been smoking cigars since High School, though only regularly since January of 2014. I started smoking a pipe in Spring 2014 and now smoke my pipe daily and cigars weekly. I'm currently sipping on a bowl of S&G FVF in a Lilliput. Earlier today I enjoyed a La Aurora 1495 while tinkering in the garage.

While it's a shame that Puff, and all of the information on it, will not be returning, it's good to see veterans of the site will be returning to their roots with a not for profit site.

Well my name is Dennis from the NYC area. I have always enjoyed the occasional cigar. Believe it or not I quit smoking after starting cigars the taste was just horrible. Well now that I'm retired from the Marines I have more time to enjoy this hobby. I started seriously getting smokes about 4 months ago and found Puff great for camaraderie and enjoying the hobby. I look forward to growing this community. If you need any help running the site let me know I'm willing to help out. So lets all be great Bums and grow this site.

LOL, yeah, av's are coming. I'm thinking we should just have them all be "user-made", as in, everyone can make their own. I mean, most people end up doing that anyway, right?

I guess I have a responsibility to use my old av', right? Haha!

Well it's been like 8 days so I guess I better reintroduce myself since I'm sure some of you FOG have probably forgotten who I am. They say that the memory is the first thing to go and I don't remember what the other ones are.

I'm Bill and I'm actually FOG as well since I passed the half century mark a few revolutions around the sun ago. I started smoking cigars in the mid 90s during the first Cigar Boom. Back then there really weren't internet forums per se, just Usenet newsgroups like alt.smokers.cigars and most of the time I got cigars from B&Ms. I did order a few boxes off the internet, cigars with names like Big Butt, Double Happiness and Fighting Cock...heh...he said butt & cock...heh.

I dropped out of the hobby sometime around the turn of the century and just picked it up a few months ago. Amazing how many new marques have hit the market since then.

That's really about all. I sell advertising for a major metropolitan media group, umpire high school and college baseball and my wife and I love sitting out on the porch puffing on good cigars with our 3 dogs on lazy summer evenings. Oh and my favorite color is orange

Hey kids,

just another transplant from puff. I felt I was finally starting to settle in and then it floated away; happy to see the tradition continued here.

Been smoking cigars infrequently for 20 years but only truly into the hobby for a few months. I've also picked up pipe smoking and only just starting to get the hang of it..... sorta.

Well about me, I'm married and father of two (5 & 8). Live in the Portland Metro area. Outside of smoking I enjoy beer, booze, wine, coffee/espresso, cooking, camping, bearding, android, movies, and bacon. Work in the metal fabrication industry; not a glorious job, but puts food on the table, roof over our heads, and beer in my belly. I actually don't enjoy long walks on the beach. My favorite color blue.. no wait yellow... aaaahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

Coming over from Puff also, my name is Blake. I live in east TN with my wife and 9 month old daughter. I like to smoke cigars while cooking on the grill, sitting by a fire or playing golf. Grad school right now at Ga Southern. Padron and Arturo Fuente are my two favorite brands and wanting to turn the corner to CC.

Look forward to being apart of the startup of this new forum.

Hats off to the guys who started this site. I've been in your shoes so hang in there.

Screen name OnePyroTec: Ends in a "c" because in early internet days 10 letter/numbers was the limit. And YES I DO get paid to be one...

Real name:Wayne was a founding member of Club Stogie which evolved into Puff...
I'm a huge fan of cigars & pipes in general. I was in internet retail sales for years. I have been known to roll my own cigars & make my own pipes. I'm the leading expert of my own opinion (stole that line and have always been looking to use it LMAO)

Sucks that we lost the wealth of knowledge that was Puff, but such is life. Those who migrate here will help rebuild the lost empire at least.

That said, I'm Rorick, another victim of the Puff Revolt of 2015 transplant from Puff. I'm, on the overall, a noob to this hobby. I smoked my first cigar in November and was hooked. When the freezing cold of December hit, I was driven to try a pipe. While another beast entirely, I'm learning to enjoy it as much, if not more, than cigars themselves. Glad to see the community rebuilding itself.

One question though: Will the pipe section be rebuilt as well?

Morning all, Heard about this place on the asylum thought I would check it out. Long time cigar smoker and enthusiast. Small time cigar collector, I guess I smoke them almost as fast as I get them.

I'm another Don. Smoking cigars seriously for about 10 years now, started with a pipe when I was 15. No age here but that was a long time ago. Love my Bourbon,
love my craft beer also. Work full time and have a motorcycle shop as well. Happy to see some of the old names showing up. Hopefully this will become our vision
of what a great forum can be with the help of great members.

Hey guys...just wanted to introduce myself. You might remember me from passes or bombs that I sent out over the course of the year.

Been smoking for about a year. I've found some very enjoyable sticks over the course of that time and I feel like I'm still expanding my pallet. I enjoy cigar pairings. Particularly with coffee or tea in the morning and spirits (bourbon, scotch or whiskey) and craft beer in the evenings. In addition to cigars my other hobby is training and trialing Spaniels. I have three field bred English Cocker Spaniels and one field bred Spring Spaniel.

I'm glad you guys set this new forum up. Puff has always been my home and I enjoyed the overall feel of it. Looking forward to being here while this one expands.

On a side note, I'm working on contacting people that I had been in contests with. Please PM me information so we can get it resolved.

Hello my name is David, you knew me previously on Puff as the witty and charming MDSPHOTO. I figured since we are starting a new forum I would start with a new handle as well, so you can call me Browns7213 or David or butthead or whatever. I'm glad to see the driving force behind Puff start a new place to live, laugh, love and share everything we can about our beloved hobby. Truth be told, I was exploring the purchase of Vbulletin and servers costs to start my own Puff refuge, but I'll put that on the back burner for now and see how this site pans out. Like others I'm very disappointed to see a site I devoted so much of my time and energy to just go away with no notice, the content remaining on those servers is priceless. After that loss, I think I am going to paper reviews of cigars so that I can always reference them in the future.

@HerfNTurf let me know what I can do to help.

Good morning Brothers!!
Glad to see so many familiar handles! Hope to see many more as word gets out about our new home!
My name is Brian and I've been enjoying cigars for over 20 years. But I've only gotten seriously into storing & exploring the many wonderful brands/blends available about 1 1/2 years ago when I was given a few sticks from an event and got a brand that I never heard of. You see I manly smoked the mainstream cuban "named" sticks. So I hopped online to find out more about the cigar. In doing so I ran across a few forums, puff being the 1st one I signed up on.
I met a lot of great people & learned sooooooo much! And, am still learning. I went from an occasional cigar & no storage to a 40 ct humi & smoking 3 or more per day! Now, thanks to the info I learned from most of you guys, along side that 40 ct I also have 2 tupperadores holding ~50 each & a wineador holding ~200 (it's only a 12 btl).
I'm the father of 3 children (20, 15 & 11) & married to my best friend. I enjoy a good libation (scotch, tequila, wine & beer), cooking, motorcycles, most anything called sports (finally trying to play golf) & spending quality time with my family. And of course, a good cigar.
Thank you guys for bringing back this community!

My name is Steve and I love cigars. Been married for 35 years, have 3 growd yunggins and 8 grandyunggins. Took up cigars about 1 1/2 years ago and found Poof.

I want to thank Herf for his hard work and effort to build us a new home. I missed you all.

I would also like to say thank you to the members of BOTL for graciously accepting a bunch of us to their forum after Puff went Poof.

Hey guys! I used to frequent Puff quite a bit, after the first outage I started to look more into the history of the site and the owner and got a little disenfranchised, after the second outage (august I think!?) I just gave it up and spent more time on a different board. I saw posted that Puff was dead and someone was starting up a replacement and wasn't too sure about it. Clicked over and saw it was Herf and Turf. Since Don is running the show, I'm back in! I used to have a pic of Smokey (University of Tennessee's mascot as my avatar) for those who may not remember me. I'm excited to see what a new place can be when it's built on the love of the leaf. The other board I migrated to is the same way and I love it! It's good to see some of you guys again.

Good day all, name is Troy and I too am a cigar junkie. Been enjoying quality cigars for 20 years now. Never thought of looking into cigar forums to share the passion with till last summer. Since finding them, I must say that my variety in cigars smoked has increased greatly. As well as my change over from multiple humidors and coolidor to a wineador and Coolidor.

Currently shopping for a China Cabinet to convert to a TEC large storage. Got the plans all figured out, just looking for the right unit to start my project.

Look forward to chatting cigars with you.

Hey, all old Puffer friends and new Bums!! I was active on Puff for a couple of years, but kind of dropped off in the last year or so (focused on family, and craft beer!); but I continued to enjoy cigars!
My grandfather smoked 13 Te-Amo or White Owl cigars a day while working; He lived a long, healthy and happy life! I have fond memories of him and his cigars, so I have a special connection to him through my cigar hobby.
I learned so much from the good and generous BOTL on Puff, so I am looking forward to reconnecting and meeting new Bums.
My tastes run the range of sizes and styles, but my go-to styles and sizes are in full-flavored robustos and bigger. Recently smoked one of those Asylum 8x80s! Whoa. Holy $#@*!!
Everyday sticks include Liga Undercrown, AB Black Markets, DPG CC and JJ Maduro; Bueso Genesis; JDN Antanos;
Special sticks include Liga UF-13 and Pigs; PSD #4 and Behikes; Camacho Triple Maddie...
Love hoppy beer and stouts and sipping rums (Zaya and Zacapa);
We usually gather out in the Doom Saloon--my converted garage--for cigars, music, mischief, and beer tastings.
Thanks Don, for getting this up and running!! It's Good to be back!

Hello all. My name is Chris and I am from Chatham, Ontario, Canada. I use to smoke cigarettes 20 years ago and the odd cigar. About 1 year ago I began smoking cigars again and just love it. I love the CC's but have also learned about a lot of NC's dealing with people on Puff. I am glad to have a new home and look forward to reaquainting myself with you guys.

Cheers.

Hi folks!

hailing from the Sacramento area of Norcal. I happen to have been enjoying cigars for 3-ish years now with a preference toward medium bodied coronas and petite coronas. I dabble in the CC arena, but am far far far from experienced. I typically dont post a ton in forums, but I read quite a bit :)

If any of you other bums like to ride off road MC's in the Norcal area feel free to PM me. More often than not we have a beer and burn one after a ride.

I see quite a few familiar screen names in this thread... surprise surprise... LOL

Well, crap.... Guess there's not room for one more Joel!;)

I'm Joel from South Jersey, near Philly. Gorilla from 05 or 06. Limited puffer, but made friends with some regular puffers who I've regrettedly not seen in quite a while. A (somewhat) regular on a few forums, and I recognize some names from here or there.

Hope to catch back up with some old friends, while always looking to make some new ones.

Freshly homeless - yep that fits me to a tee.

Dang guys, next time just tell me that I have an odor. Found you guys again. My feelings are terribly hurt though.

Because of members at puff I got a coolidor that works awesome with kitty litter.

Love them cigars.

Not here to cause trouble, but to learn more about the habit. Cuba Libre One, Padrons, Olivia, Nica Libre, PDR (the good ones) and Don Pepin Garcia, are just a few I have learned to love.

I was born, raised and still live in The Natural State, Arkansas, that is.

Don't you guys run off again :)

P.S. Thanks for getting the site up and going.

P.S.1 Think the IRS also is looking for most of you guys.

Greetings all and a big thank you to @SeanTheEvans for the heads up about the new hangout.
Tony from western NY here - was a member at Puff and would be just hitting my 1 year mark now.
Been smoking cigars for about 30 years - mostly on the golf course during the summer months but have gotten more into it in the last few years.
Favorite brands are Tatuaje, Crowned Heads, Padron and Arturo Fuente.
Smoked a pipe pretty regularly 25 years ago and let it fall off. Recently got back into it (with a little nudge from Tobias) and enjoy the occasional bowl now.
Glad to see names and friends I recognize and kudos to you guys who stepped up and put this together. I truly loved the brotherhood and generosity of the members we had at Puff and hope that will improve here on the new site.
