View Full Version : USER NAME / AVATAR Tell Us Why

This was started long ago at the old home place, and would like to see the tradition kept alive. I did not see it picked up here. Mods.." Kill It" if I'm duplicating.

So many new names & faces (avatars) since we moved here. Some are new to me or you, some are new to Bum, and some are old veterans that just changed their identity.

When I finally found Bum, and received welcome from some old friends, it was weird ass hell coming from those that had changed one or both. It was like they had had plastic surgery, or implants, or...well, you get the idea. You don't realize how much you are recognized and associated with a little picture or eclectic group of letters and numbers.

For new members especially, I (we) would like to get to know you better through this thread by telling us a little bit about why you chose your avatar, user name, or both.

Here Goes..Ron White (my idol) no reverence for stoooopid. 50's, big eater, drinker, cigar smokin country boy with a serious love of well placed sarcasm.

Bowtech4ever....Avid hunter, took up bow hunting for a challenge. Was given a bow by a dear friend to try (a BowTech Admiral), I tried 20 more, and his gift turned out to be the best by far. Kept my user name from a hunting forum. Thank you all in advance BT

My avatar is gonna be my next tattoo

Bluenoser- the Bluenose was a famous schooner built in my home province that was the fastest ship of its day. Bluenoser is a term sometimes used for people from Nova Scotia. Using it oddly makes me feel better living this far from home.

And my avatar... Well who doesn't like a cigar smoking, liquor drinking, foul mouthed cartoon robot.

JollyRogers--Nick name I picked up teaching sailing. Generally a Jolly demeanored guy, last name Rogers and a rum drinking sailor it all just made too much sense.

Avatar--Well me, in Baja Mexico having a beer before camping out near some cliffs in Scorpion Bay. I'm told it's a sexy pic...:stogie: lol

Bruck
03-11-2015, 06:48 PM
Bruck is a nickname I picked up years ago on my local (Detroit at the time) ham radio frequency. When departing the on-air conversation, I'd sign off with something along the lines of, "the preceding transmission is brought to you courtesy of the Voice of Bruck News Service." I later started a blog by that same name, which attracted about 2 dozen readers. I don't update it much anymore.

Both: Being an 80's baby, Mike was a huge influence on my life and is my favorite athlete of all time (maybe tied with Ali). He was also one of the people who sparked my interest in cigars. To this day, I apply his sports approach (focus, compete, push yourself, etc.) to various parts of my life. So when I first joined a cigar forum and was thinking of what username/avatar to use, Jordan23 seemed obvious.

Blaylock
03-11-2015, 07:20 PM
Blaylock is derived from Blake Lockhart.

I chose the name Blake Lockhart when I joined Club Stogie in 2006.

At that time, we bought a condo. in Palm Coast, FL with my brother-in-law and his family. It was very nice...on the beach, pool complex, golf course, and best of all a Cigar Lounge.

One night, sitting in the lounge, we started talking about being rich and famous one day. He jokingly stated he'd change his name to Chest Rockwell and I declared mine to be Blake Lockhart. Vacationing together, we had a lot of fun introducing ourselves to strangers using those names.

Anyway, I changed my name to a combined version of that when I joined Puff.

My avatar picture selection seemed to fit my personality...capable to take on a leadership role, but not to be taken too seriously. Plus I'm a HUGE Star Trek fan!

Since my dad went by George, to cut confusion, I was called by my initials. Most friends and family still call me G.W. or G (shortened my initials?)

The avatar is a pic of my dad, that was on the front page of a local paper (Mt. Airy News) in '74, I believe. It was taken at a local festival (The Autumn Leaves Festival). He was wearing typical hillbilly, flannel shirt, bib overalls, and a straw hat. The pipe he is smoking is a cob he made. I have one, maybe that one. Re-found it just after Thanksgiving. At Christmas, I loaded it with Carter Hall, lit it and passed it around to my sons like a peace pipe. Looking to put it in a small shadow box for keeps.

I used to do sound engineering, both in the studio and live. I have sort of fallen out of love with it with the rampant computerization of music recording and the repeated high volume of mixing live bands night after night becoming very fatiguing. 99 is the year I was born...Not really. Just a random number.

Wolverine has been one of my all time favorite comic book characters and the fact that he's a cigar smoker makes him that much cooler. Even in the movies, he smokes a cigar in every one since his big screen debut in X-Men.

My username is just a stupid inside joke from a long time ago (something to do with my claimed height, I am actually like 5'11"). Also have used 610 and 6ten on other forums.

Avatar just happened to be one of 3 images I had to choose from at the time (its either a candle or a lamp).

Nature
03-11-2015, 08:48 PM
Shortened from Nature-Boy. A nickname donned upon me by some golf buddies. During our rounds, I frequently would pick up a feather, point out a species of tree, identify a bird from its call, pick up insects like dragonflies etc. in between shots. Either that, or I often could be found meandering through the trees on a nature walk looking for my ball after a shot. I do like the outdoors and things natural.

Early on in Puff, I was trying to find an Avatar I liked. At that moment, I heard the "hoot-hoot, hooooo, hoooooo" from a pair of great horned owls on my roof. They are impressive creatures standing around 2 feet tall, fly on silent wing and are incredible hunters. Hearing their call brings a smile to me every time as I often heard them calling right outside of my bedroom window. Besides, I like the piercing eyes.

Alright George W. you don't have to hide anymore...I hear you took up painting...missing the White House much these days?

In all seriousness, cool story about the pipe! I traveled back and forth to Mt. Airy for about 9 months for work, I attended that festival and probably stood very near where that picture was taken. Interesting town!

Coasty
03-12-2015, 12:49 AM
Coasty was laid on me by my high school friends after I joined the Coast Guard.
Avatar is W.C. Fields, IMO the funniest man that ever lived. He loved his cigars and booze. My dad delivered whisky to him during prohibition and told me he was a good man to do business with. "anyone that hates dogs and kids, can't be all bad"

Thanks for this thread. Have enjoyed all the post.

Cool Breeze
03-12-2015, 12:58 AM
When I worked for ADT (Commercial Dept) we were putting cameras and access control in a huge mall in Jonesboro and we would sometimes be a quarter mile away from each other. So, we all carried radios. The lead tech on the job kind of made my radio handle Cool Breeze because he said I never got in a hurry. I told him, "Hey man, this is a marathon, not a sprint." lol
The name kind of stuck and I was Cool Breeze for the next 5 years.

The Avatar - Because I'm so damn good looking.

I'm not a sports fan, but I remember using this name back on an early forum, probably in the late 90's when I was a teenager. I've always used the explanation that I had just read a Tom Clancy book and I liked the character and the name, so that's what I'll stick with. I kind of wish I'd changed over to my actual name or initials when the Bum came up, but it's not a big enough deal for me to go back now.

The avatar is Uma Thurman's character in Pulp Fiction right after she gets resurrected by the shot to the heart. Heh a fellow BB stacker!! Back in the day I was a 46250 myself. Started on F-15's, then went to AC-130 gunships. Before going over to Army side of things.

Awesome! Ya don't meet a lot of fellow 462's around. Had some great times back in those days.
