View Full Version : What do I do with my footlocker humidor?

So I received this footlocker style humidor not too long ago and I'm not sure what to do with it. Fill it up, I know, that's not the problem. Well, it kinda is the problem. It's just a big empty box, the dimensions are roughly 15" x 12" x 10" and there are no trays.
Would plastic drawer organizer trays work? Would the plastic be a problem?
Should I just put cigar boxes in there? Use the boxes as trays in a way?
*Side question: How does a closed cigar box in a humidor get humidified? I know it happens all the time, it just seems counter-intuitive.

A) Cigar boxes probably will work best - or break em up and use em as trays.
B) Wood isn't sealed, so just like a humi leaks, so does a cigar box. They aren't even as thick.
edit: nono, I'm not done yet...

left side is just boxes stacked, and right side is boxes I split in half, stacked. They fit nicely without crushing the cigars in one another.
Now in the BIG cooler....

I really am a fan of the Asylum Ogre boxes (and lids! definitely the lids!)

Cedar trays are out there, that's what I'd do.
Check with Kayla the woman cheaphumidors and she'll hook you up and we have a Cigar Bum discount code with them.

I agree with this wholeheartedly, and have purchased my trays from Kayla. I also have boxes in my coolidor and haven't had a problem with humidity at all. Sean's idea of breaking up boxes is certainly viable as well. Use whatever method allows you to fill'er up!

Indeed they are. Probably the most popular item we sell!
We carry two main sizes:
12.5" x7.5" x 2.25" and 10.25" x8" x 1.5"
If you need a specific size I can check our "junk tray pile" (trays we pull from humidors when they are damaged beyond use)

You'd be more impressed if you knew how many bike rides to the B&M it took to acquire that many boxes of the correct size, and I'm still not done.

:D lol, did I interrupt you when I clicked "Thanks"?
I think I'll probably just use cigar boxes for now. I'll be sure to remember the trays though, when the time comes.

ohnononononononono
timing was pure coincidence if it correlated.
I just ended it early because I had to take and load up pictures, and I often leave threads open for long periods of time as I forget about it and do other things... but then I reply later when I finish writing it all out nicely with pictures, etc... but the question has been answered and things have moved along too far by then. This was a "quick answer" placeholder with a "I can develop this idea with visual aids" promise in the future.

Sean do you have that big cooler mounted to something or anchored somehow ?
It just seems it would flop around and not be too stable when you open and close it, although I have never tried it.

Nar- just sitting on some crappy particple board ikea knockoff table, against the wall. It doesn't really stay pinned against the wall, kinda leans forward a bit, but not a problem, and certainly not flimsy. I hold both pieces when I open the lid, but just push hard when shutting it and it sets it against the wall again. Haven't had any problems with anything falling yet...
Pics to explain better (sorry if this was a threadjack)
So the bottom looks like this (the top), except no "big handle", just the little one. Not sure if you can tell, but it slants downward, which means the other side causes the cooler to tilt back at a slight angle, helping stabilize. The handle is a nice square towards the front of this slant, so it too plays a role in keeping the cooler slightly more stable:
http://i825.photobucket.com/albums/zz175/SeanTheEvans/0303151846a_zpsz4pl38dj.jpg
Then there's this part that used to be a wheel, but it's nice and flat, and fits flush up against the wall
http://i825.photobucket.com/albums/zz175/SeanTheEvans/0303151846b_zpsmwnlbnby.jpg
A picture of the bottom where it's resting on the handle:
http://i825.photobucket.com/albums/zz175/SeanTheEvans/0303151846_zpsbvyy8t5x.jpg
and as I said, the whole thing is sitting on a crappy cheap end table, to keep it at a height that's easier for me to access/view it
I think it's easiest to see the slant backwards in this photo...

Brad we're expecting to see some pics when you fill that big box !
Don't know exactly, but I looked at this humi at one time and was thinking about trying to do trays on one side and boxes in the leftover space.
Ultimately went wineador route as I needed cooling, but am really interested to see what you wind up with
Should I just put cigar boxes in there?

I've had a humidor for more years than most here on the forum are old! Many years ago, I thought that all cigars should be removed from their box, opened (if wrapper in cellophane) and lied out there for the humidor to do its job.
Well, that's the WORST that can be done; long term the cigar looses ALL of its flavor. So boxes are the way to go. :tranq:
Even short term, say 1 month, cigars with wrappers will almost survive OK but w/o wrappers, they loose their distinctive flavor. You saw it here first! :stogie:

Sure thing, just don't hold your breath. :stogie: I have a pretty good stash already and I'm not really looking to expand just yet.
Unlike most bums on the forum, I have my addiction under control ;)

Yeah, watch it. You could lose your Bum-Card for that one!
But then again, sometimes the best things in life: love, luck & the lottery (and cigars), often occur when you're not really "looking"!

LOL - my "spare" Newair 281 came in today !
I seriously don't think I'm coordinated enough to do that big cooler standing on end, but I could handle the footlocker.

What do you mean coordinated? I literally set it on a table and against a wall. It's really not rocket science, although getting the shelves to fit right was kind of a pain. I've seen others do it better. I think mine's not half-bad. But hard... no it was not.

I think I'd have boxes all over the floor opening and closing it. I'm not all smooth like you !

I will have to measure the trays I have but if they will fit you are welcome to them. They will need seasoned as they have been out of my humidor for a while.

Lol - not hating, actually just don't think I could handle it. You buy way more boxes than I do so I like the wineador with drawers for the singles and fivers.
But I do have one of those big coolers and may use it for extra boxes but I think I'll just leave it on the bottom and root around - like when you're searching for a PBR !

I didn't think you were hatin'. The text just comes with the gif that's super smooth.
In actuality, I don't buy boxes, and likely not way more than you do. I too enjoy the wineador concept for singles and 5er storage, but my big cooler is filled with boxes filled with random cigars, lol. Most are organized in there by size and what time-period I bought them in. I certainly am not storing 12 boxes of Asylum in that thing, lol
I'd wager that the majority of my cigars are unique, rather than even being 5ers or boxes. Just shows how much variety there is in this hobby!

Hey, thanks! If you're willing to part with them, I'd be glad to have them. PM me with the details.
