I picked up 2 estate briars at flea markets this weekend. Gonna give my first try and revamping them.
The salt/alcohol treatment seemed to work well.

We'll see how they smoke in a couple of days. :)

My latest purchase was a Angelo pipe, Peterson of Dublin De Luxe Mixture, Sweet Killarny, Sherlock Homes and Mac Barren Modern Mixture tobacco. I was sceptic about the Angelo and saw mixed reactions on the net about the pipe but to be honest, I'm surprised with this pipe! I'm still breaking it in but it is giving my Peterson Barrel a bit of competition.

This made me laugh....pretty sure I bid on this very Wally Frank. Either that, or it was the "Buy Me Now" one waiting on my watch-list!

Great first estate! Looks really clean, and you will love that Wally. They are great pipes, a lot of them made by big manufactures for Wally Frank.

I may just have a Wally Frank of my own coming in the next couple days.....you know, since the Bulldog I wanted got away from me :p

There is a pipe club that gets together on the first Thursday of every month at Don Yeyo Cigar Factory in Dearborn. I have been to two meetings now and they are a great bunch. There are also several other lounges in the metro area.

The PAD attack continues....

Took a stab at this ebay lot...seller had little to no idea what they had and the description was terrible....but I saw the Stanwell crown on one and a Custombilt-esque one so I took a gamble and won.

Turns out I was right about the Stanwell....it is a Royal Danish. The Custombilt looking one is a Fieldstub and the other is a no name "Silver Knight."

The Silver Knight looks like it has a little crack repair where the stem meets the mortise. That is where the silver band comes in...They're all filthy but I am hoping they all clean up well and smoke great. Time will tell. Probably will end up selling them to feed more of my habit haha.

Just received a 10 pipe grab bag from MM. 6 Legends, 2 bent, 4 straight. 2 bent Mizzou. One straight Country Gentleman. And one that appears to be somewhat of a hybrid. It has the bowl of the Wizzard Cobbit with the bent stem of a Country Gentleman, and I can't find a flaw anywhere in this pipe.

Just won an auction on Ebay for a Wally Frank bulldog. It looks pretty nice and I got it dirt cheap, ($16.50), but buying a Wally Frank is always a crap shoot because you never know who made it. It's an unvarnished pipe, so I thought it might be a Weber, but it has two white dots on the stem which I don't recall seeing on a Wally Frank before.

They can be a crap shoot, but more often than not I find that they're awesome pipes. I wish there was an easier way to nail down which manufacturer made which Wally Frank pipe. I know that Sasieni, BBB, and Charatan all were big time Wally pipe makers.

If you get the right ones, they're awesome scores.

Got an inexpensive Nording pipe from C&P. It has a screw of bowl to put in these Keystone pellets in the bottom to absorb moisture. The thing I don't care for is the stem. The hole in the stem is very small which doesn't allow much smoke through. Might have to fing another stem that fits and give it another go.

Saw one of these on Tony78's cellar pic, and he directed me to an Ebay listing for a good price. Couldn't pass it up.

I only took the one pic, but on the back is a slot for a tamper and a slot for a book of matches. I'm not sure if it came with a tamper originally, but it is missing. The little metal tampers don't fit, but a golf tee fits perfect. It is very well, built, probably far better than required to hold a couple of pipes. The wheels even roll. Very cool.

It's FINALLY here! 2 weeks for USPS to ship this from CT to IL

I've had the car for about 10 years and have been looking and looking for the rare plane to complete the set. This manufacturer (S & T woodcrafts) went out of business in the early 80's and there was supposed to be a train also. They filed the patent for the train just shortly after they released the plane and the train never got produced before they went under.

I just ordered my first "10 Pipe Grab Bag of Smokable Seconds" from Missouri Meerschaum Company, and a selection of all of their bits...to try and see which ones I prefer. I have several MM Country Gentleman pipes (my daily puffers) and a few of the inexpensive ones that I absolutely love. I am looking forward to see what they send me, it's almost like Christmas!

Now, this order is because of you guys...and I don't appreciate you forcing me to spend my money. Really, it's not acceptable... ;)

I've ordered a couple bags of those - not a bad one in the bunch! I keep a few unsmoked ones around for noobs who want to try pipe smoking but might be put off by smoking a used pipe.

It has some obvious rim char, a little bit of cake, and the stem/shank will def need to be cleaned...I've never worked on a Meer before so we will see how it goes.

All in all I am really happy with it. The price was right and seeing it in person is even better than it looked on Ebay.

The old lady perfume bit had me excited! No lose there! Another Lakeland pipe yes!

But the poor tenon hack job crushed my little heart. Poor thing.

On a side note, you sure do get a lot of Lakeland snot pipes! I would say out of the last 30-40 pipes I have bought off the Bay, maybe 1 or 2 had a Lakeland ghost in them...

Al in all, it wasn't a bad week. Four pipes, three winners. A couple of very nice Wally Frank pipes, which I've developed quite an affinity for, and a no name sandblasted straight billiard for next to nothing with a nice open draw and spot on drilling. Too bad about the Lakeland pipe though, a nice looking Algerian briar with some birdseye. It could be cleaned up with a salt treatment, and passing a drill bit through the stem would probably solve the tenon problem, and maybe if I get tired of looking at it I may just do that.

Hi Warren,

Wally Frank had pipes made for them by several manufacturers over the years. Perhaps the most common Wally Frank private labels were made by Weber Pipes. Several upper tier shops, like Barclay-Rex, Connoisseur and Ehrlichs had some of their pipes made by Weber at one time or another.

They made nice quality pipes, generally at affordable prices. Enjoy yours.

IMO that is the best pipe lighter you can get. I've been using mine for 5 years now. I recommend using a match for the charring light due to having to hoover the lighter for the initial light, but every relight just strike it and place it down over the bowl resting it on the rim. Enjoy!

Hi Brandon,

It's way small for me normally and nothing special at all. If I don't like it I'll pass it on and get another. If I like it I'll get another. Either way I'm out the price of another :).

It's interesting to me because it was made in London. Austria was the meerschaum king for a long time but some meers started to be made in England after the war. Inderwick was out of biz by the mid 1960s. There's a funky pattern on the case that looks 1960s so I'll assume it's about 50+ years old.

I have to say that for my first grab bag (i.e. Smokable Seconds), I was a little disappointed. I wish I wasn't...heck, what I got was still a great deal/value. I guess I'm being selfish...no, I know I am. But, after looking at mine a little closer: I ended up with two Diplomat's, however both of them have a serious crack making them unsmokable. One of the 3 Legends is unsmokable with it's own crack down the side and add to that, the one with the broken bit (which I can easily replace)...I guess I just expected 10 "Smokable Seconds". I ended up with 7, once I swapped out the bit.

OK, I'm off my soapbox/I feel sorry for myself/looser chair! LOL! :pipe:

I get that these are seconds, and I could care less about the imperfections, etc...gives them character! And, I absolutely love my MM Country Gentleman's. But the cracks on the three just took me back a bit.

After I wrote what I wrote previously...I stopped crying like a little baby and figured I'd just email them and let them know. For all I know, it was a shipping issue, they could have just been handled roughly.

That is a great looking pipe at an even better price.

This era of Barling is a treasure hunt for me. I couldn't see the end (air hole) of the bit so I judged handmade by the shaping on the flat of the bit and the length of the saddle (longer than machine molded bits). The shaping of the pipe says handmade but Barling's precision with handmade shapes can be confusing. The serial number, 7 series with 4 digits, that I've seen or owned have been pipes that were made, or at least released for sale, between early 1961 through early 1963 but with the Barling name in script they must be from late 1962 into 1963. This particular Barling script stamp I only know from 1963 or a bit later. So it's a 1963 regardless of the manufacture and it if is handmade then it was made with Barling's famed briar. I bid on the pipe as if it was a machine made pipe. We'll see if I was a wanker or not :).

I think you look for specific markers in the Custombilts that you buy? Small details that tell a lot about the pipe.

Now I have too many pipes to restore plus one.

Pete

I do indeed like certain era's of Custombilts. I really hunt for the pre-1960s and am always a sucker for the 30s-40s Mincer era pipes. Treasure hunt is indeed a good term to use!

Hey Warren,

That's a lovely Rhodesian with a beautiful full grain and great dimensions. Looks like a 1960s Sav based on physical characteristics but I'm no expert at dating them. Regardless, you got a great deal on this stick. Enjoy and please tell us how it smokes.

Pete

Thanks, Pete. I'm kind of surprised I won it. I low balled it and I fully expected to be out bid.

Sadly, PAD struck again this afternoon. In lieu of flowers, please smoke a bowl and hope that your PAD inoculation holds. This could have been you.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Barling-Pot-/391086864768?sojTags=exe%3Dexe%2Cext%3Dext&cp=1&euid=de5256aba0844010a5ed8a795f246a2d&exe=11568&ext=28290&nma=true&si=0TXPQt68o5X5p0WbCyN0lwHO43g%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Title of the item was: Barling Pot

The title could have been: Barling Quaint, Pre-Transition, Regd on Stem (1936-1949)

Quaints are rare and highly collectible and more rare with the Reg number on the stem (earlier). Not a lot of solid history on Quaints (the name isn't from Barling, it evolved) but pipes with this type of carving first appeared in the war years. The probable story is that during the lean war years, Barling carved existing bowls that had some flaws. Given the reg no and the less elaborate carving I'd solidly date this pipe in the war years between 1941-1945 and that makes it rarer still.

I had no expectation of getting this pipe and as with all eBay purchases you need to hold off judgement until you see it but at the least, it's a pre-trans Barling smoker with the original handmade stem (in weak condition) for $67 and as long as my finances held, I'd buy it all day and night.

Yes, I know that I'm qualifying my PAD. I'll post further once the pipe is in hand (with porn). Have to get back to eBay, PAD is stoked!

Going to my trailer in the foothills west of Redding , CA. Temps are in the high 70's to mid 80's, no danger of frostbite. Several of us have trailers and/or cabins on a total of 160 acres of adjoining parcels. It's always a good time getting together up there, but I began to notice a pattern some time ago. It seems there's always a few who forgot their pipe, or tobacco, or both. Of course, they all know that I carry spare cobs and plenty of tobacco, and they always rave about my tobacco selection, (free always tastes so much better), so maybe the group review might not yield completely honest results.

Hi Matthew,

A daughter-in-law who buys you a pipe is a treasure!

It looks like the stem has straightened in the picture? If so, it's not too hard to bend it but make sure that you keep a pipe cleaner in it to prevent crimping. If you need help with this, just ask and I'm sure that we can give you some methods.

Stems (usually) start out straight and are bent during manufacturing. Older molded stems seem to straighten out the most because of time, the way that the base vulcanite stock was made and the bits shaped (molded).

Good luck giving it a go watch out for embers.

Hi Matthew,

I did a sanity check and your pipe is (was) a bent. It really needs to be re-bent otherwise it will be difficult to smoke and cumbersome (and possibly dangerous).

These comments are for vulcanite stems only. I'm pretty sure that your stem is vulcanite but I can't be certain.

The idea is to get the vulcanite flexible and for that you'll need heat. Some pipe repair services can do this. If you're going to do it yourself there are several ways but I'll discuss hair blow dryer because it's less involved (potentially).

Before you start, look at other bent pipes to see how they're shaped. Generally you want the smoke hole (end of the stem that goes into the mouth) to be about parallel with the top of the bowl. Put the thickest pipe cleaner that you can fit into the stem and leave it there until you're finished.

You want to heat the middle few inches of the stem until it's fully flexible (takes time) and it wobbles back and forth if you flick it. Then bend it into the shape that you want with a smoothing motion of the fingers as it is starting to harden. You should be able to stop when it holds shape.

Distribute heat evenly but not at either end of the stem, especially the tenon (shank/stem joint). You can always start over or adjust by reheating.

You can work with the stem on or off of the pipe. For your first time it may be easier off of the pipe. Protect the tenon (no heat at all here - stay away).

Remember:
Pipe Cleaner
Even heat across and around
Don't start bending until it wobbles
Tenon stays cold, button cool

If it's not the way you like, reheat it till it wobbles and try again.

Hope that this helps.

The number one thing I look for when buying a slight bend pipe. This is key for a comfortable pipe, IMO.
But parallel can imply higher or lower. You rather want it to be "in line" with the top. As in on the same horizontal plane.

NP,but quick question, just how do they straighten out on their own?

Hi Matthew,

Heat and manufacturing process.

Molded vulcanite stems have had about three ‘periods’ of manufacturing changes and the first two didn’t heat the vulc as hot so it has a greater tendency to revert to it’s original form. Almost all current molded stems are made with air injection (like soft serve) at higher temps so they don’t have much ‘memory’ and they don’t readily (but can) revert. They’re also lighter in weight, more maleable but not as strong and dense.

Rod vulcanite is a different manufacturing process and I don’t know that I’ve ever seen one revert.

Pete

Well I hope I've got it where I'm not sucking embers down my gullet...What do you think?

Much better, nice job, especially for your first try. I think you'll enjoy it a lot more.

If you feel that it needs more bend, you can heat it again. The only point I'd make is to heat further up and down the stem for a longer area to bend.

Well done, enjoy.

Just picked up another mini meer - fun little pipe.

Shown next to a full-sized one to see the relative size. Got it from AND in Ypsilanti, MI. Chose this one based on (1) they claim it's made from block, (2) it came with a case, and (3) it was dirt cheap - ~$21 shipped.

Thanks, Pete. I have some PS LNF. But if you've already sent it out, I'll definitely smoke it! :pipe:

Got tired of lugging around all my pipe stuff and pipes, so I decided to get a bag dedicated to my pipes. It's on old leather camera bag
