I may have gone a little overboard. I wanted a new cob and some more ODF. I remembered I had a 20% off code as well, so why not make it enough for free shipping.

Now to find a bigger rack or cabinet for storage. The dvd rack I took over is no longer large enough.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171007/fa5531f4c7fbce6b0177c2f73023551b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171007/3f3b9942564cc77409090a928de3cbd0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171007/8a5d893ee83228657fe7d8c58752bf89.jpg

Nice!

I see you picked up a tin of Sam's Flake. I had a bowl of that last night.
I don't care much for it (although fresh, the tin note is wonderful) It's not that it's bad, it's just nothing special.
Let us know what you think of it. I'm always interested in someone else's take.

I believe that they all piled into one of the factories for economy of scale. The merger was about 2 years ago so I suspect that most commercially available tobacco (now) would be post-merger and if, as @Branzig (http://www.cigarbum.com/forum/members/branzig.html) has found, there isn't much difference if any at all that's a good sign.

well I know for sure I've bought Sweet Rum Twist more recently than 2 years ago. The new stuff has more lakeland essence but I attribute that only to the fact that the jar I refilled was 4 or 5 years old.

Well, I followed up with P&C about the backordered McClelland 2015, from the sale previously mentioned, and received this response.

Thanks for choosing Pipes & Cigars! We appreciate your concern for the backordered tobacco. We are working with the manufacturer to resolve this. Unfortunately, we had an unexpected delay restocking this and do not expected back in stock date.

I wonder how long it would actually be to wait.
I kind of feel like if I cancel it, they win.

Also, what in the world is "do not expected back in stock date."?

It's the Reflexive Past Inflexive form so common with texters.

All the McClelland I ordered was B/O'd but within a few days I received a pound of #2025 with 2-lbs of #2010 still not received and I do not expected received date :)

Hi Tony,

As you know, White Knight and Blackhouse are associated with the original Sobranie White and Sobranie #759 (Black). I smoked all the permutations of the Sobranies from the 1960s through 1990s and I remember them all, especially those made when the Redstone brothers owned the company and controlled production (till about 1980) and these were special.

A gent on this forum was kind enough to put aside 6 tins of the new Sobranie (White) for me a couple of years ago and I hadn't smoked it until recently. It's Danish made and absolute rubbish, bordering on unsmokeable. Everything is wrong about it from the cut (fine ribbon when it should be a broad ribbon) to the components.

I tried both White Knight and Blackhouse when I bought them 2-3 years ago and found them bland but they were certainly smokeable. I tried them both again within the last 6 months and with 2 years of age they were markedly improved.

Neither is very close to the 1960s Sobranies or even the 1980s but, with time, they are both good and to my taste and opinion the Blackhouse is very good. It needs to be remembered that component tobacco changes over time due to many factors as illustrated by Gawith Hoggarth now sourcing Virginias from Africa (that are quite good). It's up to the blender to adjust blends according to the leaf available.

Russ Oulette (the blender) is to be commend for White Knight and Blackhouse and it appears that he tried to make quality mixtures rather than chasing the rainbow to make an exact copy (that I believe would be near impossible). The weight of the mixtures is correct as is the cut and type. In this sense they are similar to the original Sobranie but they are each different in their own right. I enjoy them for what they are rather than what they aren't. Cigars and Pipes description of Blackhouse mentions that Russ (in 2011) had a 23 year old sample (1988) to work from but that mixture was decidedly different from the Sobranie of the 1960s and what Russ blended is an excellent replication and fine example of his abilities.

So, this is my overlong way of saying that you might want to shelve a tin for a while. Latakia mixtures (like Blackhouse especially) do very well with some age and I thnk these will be best after 3 and 5 years respectively. Problem is, if you're like me, I put shelved tobacco out of mind and sight and when I rediscover them it's 20 years or more and heavy latakia (Blackhouse) mixtures start going south after about 7 years.

Enjoy,

Pete

Pete thank you for the detail. I purchased two tins with the intent on trying one now and aging one for later. The thought being if I like the blend even a little now, I’ll source (hoard) a few more tins and stash them away. I too have 10-15 year old tins stashed that I need to start going through lol. I’m definitely a sucker for the shiny metal tins.

I understand the sources (esp Syrian) and the blends change. With all of the rave reviews I couldn’t help myself from trying some.

Syrian latakia is a ggood example and virginia leaf is almost never from Virginia these days. City names have historically been associated with Oriental leaf but the Yenidje that Sobranie used in the 1960s was the best Basma A from the Yenidje area (near Giannitsa), highly aromatic (far more than other Orientals) and a distinct spice that I've never tasted anywhere else. Ken McConnell (CE McConnell) said that even through the late 1980s that Sobranie bought the best leaf but that quality and consistency diminished after the Redstones left (~1980). Both Sobranie and McConnell used coumarin liberally that gave their mixtures a distinctive top-note, nose and flavor.

Between these pipes and the tobacco you've had quite a haul.

The pipes look 1960s/1970s but the Sears is (to me) the most interesting. Can you post pictures looking into the top of the bowl and perhaps another shot or two of it as well as measurements? Thanks!

Hi Doug,

Sharp looking pipe.

I doubt that you'll have the problems that I've seen with some horn stems that can be eaten away by bacteria from saliva (looks like moth holes) that render the stem unusable. I've only seen this on old pieces that weren't well finished/sealed. Good idea to clean off saliva residue in any case. Enjoy it!

Thanks for that info Pete. It’s my habit to smoke only one pipe on any given day. At the end of the day I clean it thoroughly, and that includes cleaning the bit in detergent water, and running a detergent-soaked pipe cleaner through it. That ought to take care of the “bacteria from saliva” issue. I’m glad to know that horn doesn’t oxidize.

That has happened to some of my horn knife handles and I always thought it was a bug that had chewed into it! Never imagined that it could be a bacteria!

My $90 Zino pipe lighter was showing signs of expiring, so several weeks ago I looked on Cup O’ Joes web site for a new one. I found a nice looking “Lotus Gaucho Grey Pipe Lighter” for $45, and bought it. Then I noticed an inexpensive “JetLine” lighter that looked pretty nice, for only $10.80:

Jetline G Pipe Lighter - CupOJoes.com (http://www.cupojoes.com/jetline-g-pipe-lighter)

So I took a chance and bought two of the JetLines also. Despite the “jet” in the name, they’re legitimate soft flame pipe lighters. I began using one of the JetLines about 5 weeks ago, and I’ve found it to be an excellent lighter. First, the basics: it lights reliably, and has enough capacity for a full day of pipe smoking. And, unlike my past $90 IM Corona Pipemasters (yeah, I’ve had three of them), it doesn’t singe my fingers in an adverse breeze. Furthermore, the smooth hard chrome upper part collects less soot than any lighter that I’ve ever used. And the little bit that does collect can be easily, and entirely, wiped off with a tissue moistened with Everclear. The mechanism just feels solid. I’m thinking that despite the very modest price, this is the best butane pipe lighter that I’ve ever had.

So this evening I bought two more of them, bring my total to four, because I figured that once the word got out about the excellence of these lighters the price would go up, or they would become scarce as hen’s teeth. Well, the price has already gone up — the two that I bought this evening were $12 ea, rather than $10.80 ea that I paid a few weeks ago. Still a wonderful bargain IMO. About the only caveat is that these are small lighters, that big hands might not like. Also, not windproof, but I’ve never seen a butane pipe lighter that is.

And finally, to breach the $95 free shipping threshold, I also bought seven tins of Hamborger Veermaster. The more I smoke this stuff the better I like it. Sweet, mild, and tasty.

Update: The second pair of these lighters arrived today. Like the first pair, one had bright chrome, the other smoky chrome. Both chrome finishes are very smooth and uniform -- no ripples. And both look nice in their own way. There was no hint on the Cup O' Joes web site of two different finishes. I'm still amazed by how nice these lighters are at such a low price.

I just got these "Personal Reserve" pipes in the mail two days ago from Ebay for about $20 a piece. They were sold by Barry Levin of Levin Pipes International back in the late 80's and early 90's. Barry Levin was an early pioneer in the world of marketing estate pipes - he sold pipes by sending out mailers with actual photo prints of the pipes offered for that month. These mailers were much anticipated and recipients would rush to pick out the pipes they wanted because it was first come, first served. You'd call Barry and make arrangements for payment and wait for your pipes to arrive in the mail. Anyway, he had this Personal Reserve line of pipes made and these particular pipes were made by Bill Taylor of Ashton Pipes. I didn't know that when I bought them, but found out later with a little Google research. I've been smoking the bent Dublin and it smokes very good; the billiard is unsmoked as of yet.

A few months ago I bought this Luciano squat bulldog from the Italian Estates section of SmokingPipes:

Italian Estates Luciano Smooth Bulldog (289) (B) (2013) | Buy Italian Estates Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/italy/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=246536)

Its condition was said to be “Lightly smoked”, but, in fact, it was unsmoked. It’s proved to be a well-made and sweet-smoking pipe with no bad features (light draw, doesn’t gurgle, etc).

Then, a couple of weeks ago, I saw this Luciano stout bulldog in the Italian Estates section of SmokingPipes:

Italian Estates Luciano Sandblasted Bulldog (Pease/Di Piazza) (2014) | Buy Italian Estates Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/italy/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=280361)

I bought it immediately. Bulldogs are my favorite pipe shape, and this porky puppy is nearly unique — I’d never seen one like it before. It, too, was described as “Lightly smoked”, but proved to be unsmoked. And, so far, I haven’t smoked it either.

Then, a few days ago, this Luciano stout bulldog appeared in the Italian Estates section of SmokingPipes:

Italian Estates Luciano Smooth Bulldog (Pease/Di Piazza) (2010) | Buy Italian Estates Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/italy/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=280362)

Also said to be “Lightly smoked”, and just like the first Luciano stout bulldog, except smooth rather than rusticated. I prefer smooth finishes, so I bought it too. If it proves to be as nice as it looks, I’ll probably return the rusticated Luciano stout bulldog. OTOH, the rusticated pipe is really nice, even though I prefer smooth finishes. What to do, what to do… maybe I ought to keep both of ‘em. You never know when you’re going to need another good stout bulldog.

Edit: The smooth stout bulldog arrived today (May 17), but, to my surprise, I like the rusticated one better. I’m going to return the smooth one.

SG Lakeland I can handle, Gawith Hoggarth, not so much.
The only aromatics I like are the ones that taste like... something. Trouble is, most of them smell great but taste like nothing.
I despise Autumn Evening. Probably the only bowl I dumped before the first 1/4 was smoked. Many seem to like it tho... tastes sure are subjective.

I like the classic pipe shapes. Bulldogs are my favorite, and I have several. Pots are my second favorite, but I had only this one:

Caminetto Smooth Red Pot with Silver Spigot | Buy Caminetto Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/caminetto/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=135687)

It’s a pot, says Caminetto, and it’s a very good pipe, but hardly the classic pot shape. So when this Viking pot appeared in the estates section of SmokingPipes:

Italian Estates Viking Classic Sandblasted Pot | Buy Italian Estates Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/italy/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=273743)

I grabbed it. It’s a classic pot, by George, and no mistake. Its condition is described as “4.9/5 Lightly smoked”. But like my four other SmokingPipes estate pipes that were so described, it’s unsmoked. Its price was a modest $42.75. (The Caminetto cost me $443.) I also bought five tins of Escudo to get free shipping.

This Viking is made in Italy, rather than Denmark. I’ve seen some Italian Vikings that were a bit tacky, but this one is quite good. That “bright metal mount” isn’t sterling silver, but it’s very bright chrome over brass. On the plus side, chrome, unlike silver, requires no maintenance. The join between chrome band and shank is undetectable by touch. Same with the join between band and bit. Good job, Viking.

The chamber is perfectly centered in the bowl, and the draft enters the chamber tangent to its bottom. The draft is generous — very easy draw. The light sandblast is good for traction, but not so aggressive as to impede cleaning.

I haven’t smoked this pipe yet, but I’m pretty sure that I’ll like it. A bargain at $42.75.

Some good news, and some bad news about my latest pipe purchase:

https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/italy/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=273743

The bad: I noticed that the bit angles off about 3 degrees to the side from the shank. Wouldn’t hinder smokeability, but it’s a cosmetic defect that annoys me.

The good: I noticed the defect before I smoked it. I can return the pipe, and will do so.

I bought this Mark Tinsky estate pipe (unsmoked) recently:

https://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/mark-tinsky/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=262439

I haven’t seen many Tinsky pipes that suit me, but this compact (5.2”), hunky (1.71oz) fellow is just right for a holder like me. Thick bowl walls that’ll stay cool, straight, low-maintenance acrylic bit, right size. Looks good in my eyes, and it’s a stable sitter, too.

An interesting shank — generally rectangular in cross section: flat sides, slightly convex top & bottom. The light band with thin dark stripes is palm wood. Tinsky often uses it so for a contrast element, and I like the look. Grechukhin, a Russian pipe maker, uses it too, in exactly the same way.

I didn’t buy the pipe from the link above, but used that link because it has a top view. The SmokingPipes American Estates link that I bought it from has only side views, because of the lower price.

I don’t really need this pipe, and it might be awhile before I smoke it, but it was too good of a deal to pass up. Very glad that I scored it.

Doug, does a Virginia that mild change much with age? Or does the strength not matter very much when it comes to aging?

I don’t know. The tin of HV that I have open now is only 7 months old. Currently, I have only four more tins on hand, all the same age. HV is so mild that I doubt that age could make it any milder. Might richen the flavor though.

I see that it’s “Currently out of stock“, again, at SmokingPipes. Glad that I got my 20-tin order placed while they still had that many. Good tobacco seems to be getting scarce these days.

Went to a huge flea market today with the wife. Left with a few old tins for my collection and two pipes that need a light restoration. One is a no name Italian Briar and the other is a Wally Frank Well pipe. That was my thought. I have wanted to try bringing some estates back to life and it seemed to be a good starting point. The one needs some work on the stem to determine why it won't seat properly but otherwise they just need a good reaming, sanitizing and removing some minor stem oxidation.

Who knows, I may end up liking the process and seek out some more to keep me occupied this winter.

Wessex Classic Virginia came back in stock late this morning at SmokingPipes. I ordered 5 50g tins. I wanted to buy 20, but orders were limited to 5 tins/customer/day. And it’s already out of stock again. Good pipe tobacco is getting very scarce.

I really like this stuff. Red Virginia with a little Perique, mostly rubbed-out with some clumps. Savory, it is.

I purchased this Peterson at Outlaw Cigars. Cool place if you like it hopping. Very large with 3 different areas.
There were over 100 people there Saturday night. Nice to go and have a cigar and watch football.

Yesterday I got in the mail two limited-release Dr. Grabow pipes from the factory. The top one is the "Ajustomatic", a reintroduction of a stem-fitting technology that they haven't used in 20 years. The bottom one is called "The Panel" and it's a hexagonal panel shaped pipe. I bought these by old-fashioned mail order from the Dr. Grabow factory (they are a little bit behind the times in terms of internet marketing).

It comes and goes. Seems G&H will make a production run of these twists - probably when a certain crop comes in - and then that's it until the next run. Happy Bogie and SRT seem to be the ones that run out first and when they're gone you can't find them anywhere. I've gotten most of my twist stash thru Smokingpipes. Most of my flake too for that matter... the 500g pack seems to be the best deal if you're into stockpiling :pipe:

Smokingpipes finally got one of my favorites back in stock.
They had been out of bulk C&D Autumn Evening for a while.

A friend texted me that they had it back in stock, so I went on and tried to order 8 oz. It told me they only had 2 oz in stock, so I bought it.
The next day out of curiosity, I went back on and checked. They had plenty. Don't know if it was a glitch or what, but in any even, I now have 10 oz so maybe I won't run out any time soon.

Autumn Evening is by far my favorite aromatic blend, and the only one I smoke with any regularity.

Well being you are used to cigars, maybe it won't bother you but yes, smoke it slow. It's harsh and nasty if you push it.
I dry my twist tobaccos to almost bone dry and leave them in chunks - the largest chunks that will support a halfway decent burn.

How long do you leave it to dry? Is it like a "dry box" of a cigar where you leave it for a day or two?

No, it doesn't take that long. It depends on the moisture level, ambient humidity, temp and all that but anywhere from half an hour to a couple hours. Last night I set a bowls worth out on a paper plate and set that on the wood stove duct - a place that is warm but not hot. It was dry in about 20 minutes. If it's cool and rainy outside it might take hours or may never dry unless you warm it up a bit. You just feel it from time to time and when it feels like dry leaves it's probably good, If it feels like brittle leaves that's a little too dry. You want dry leaves but not so brittle dry that they turn to dust as you try to load your pipe.

A while back I bought this Mark Tinsky brandy from the American Estates section of SmokingPipes:

Mark Tinsky Sandblasted Brandy (4) | Buy Mark Tinsky Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/mark-tinsky/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=262439)

I bought it because I liked its appearance, shape, proportions (and price). But It’s proved to be a sweet smoker, and well crafted. Notably, the draft is well centered in the mortise (sadly, not always the case), and the tenon-mortise fit is perfect — neither too tight nor too loose. And only a small gap between the end of the tenon and the bottom of the mortise.

So when this Tinsky billiard popped up in American Estates for a very reasonable price, I grabbed it.

American Estates Mark Tinsky Dress Coral Billiard (5) (2017) | Buy American Estates Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/united-states/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=298732)

And I now have it in hand. All of the nice things that I said about the craftsmanship of the brandy apply to this billiard, too. It’s been smoked, but not very darned much — the lower part of the chamber is still uncharred, and there’s no cake at all. As for the “small ding on the rim”, I can’t detect it by sight or touch. The light wood is spalted tamarind, I believe. The facets of the “Dress Coral” blast finish glint as I turn the pipe in the light — I’ve never seen that effect before. I haven’t smoked it yet, but I’m very happy to have it. I’m a Tinsky fan!

Brimy, not a thing wrong with cobs.
When I first started smoking a pipe, I actually preferred cobs. For someone new, I think they're easier to get the hang of. They smoke drier for sure.
I smoke briars more often now, but still enjoy my cobs very much, and smoke them regularly.

Understood! I guess "better" was a bad word choice. From everything I've gathered from you guys each type of pipe material has it's own characteristics and effects on the smoking experience.
The cobb being a more readily available material make it more affordable for a pipe smoker to build a "rotation". And yes, as pointed out to me by Haebar, there are some very affordable briars out there, but a cobbs price point can't be beat!

One was a Kaywoodie, my first. It is a nice looking bulldog and from what I can tell was made in the late 40s or early 50s.
One was a Shalom, an Israeli pipe, which I found unique and is why I bought it.
The other is a Saville. I think that's the name. It's a pretty cool shape.

They all need some TLC, but were only $8 apiece so I think it will be worth it.

Got an email from SmokingPipes so I picked up some...

G&H Dark Plug
G&H Ennerdale (for a change of pace once in a while... I'll probably hate it)
Solani Green Label (another change of pace.. I'll probably hate it)
...and some pipe cleaners to bump it up to free shipping

I'm hoping the Ennerdale will air out and lose the floral flavoring. I've read a couple reviews that claim it does. One can hope.
I love apple flavored things, just have never found an apple flavor pipe tobacco that's anything less than horrible so I'm prepared to be disappointed by the Green Label. Same goes for cherry flavored things / cherry tobacco: cherry = good, cherry tobacco = bad. Well, G&H does offer a Cherry Cream Flake that isn't too bad but it's certainly not a go-to.

I’m not a fan of aromatics, but awhile back I bought 5 Solani aromatic ready-rubs to try. Of the three that I’ve tried so far Green Label is the least bad. :(

I also have some Solani Tropical Mango Flake in a jar. It’s far too intensely aromatic for me to enjoy straight, but a 20/80 mixture of TMF and a staid tobacco, such as Dunhill Flake, is quite interesting. Which reminds me — I haven’t smoked such a mixture in awhile...

I got a notification from smokingpipes that one of my faves, Rattray's Hal o the Wynd was in stock. This was Tuesday or Wednesday. I thought, "Cool. I get paid Friday, I'll pick up a pound."
Less than 24 hours later they were sold out. Dammit.

Well, a friend from my local B&M texted me this morning and told me about a company called Top Hat Tobacco out of St. Louis. They had it in stock and he had picked up a couple pounds.
I went on and ordered it today.

I've never ordered a pound of bulk at a time before, and this is actually 17.5 oz, so basically a pound plus a tin.

I'm pretty stoked. I only have one unopened 3.5 oz tin left, so I was getting scary low.
I should be good for a while.

About a month ago I smoked my first fill of Solani 660, Silver Flake, and fell in love — it’s just flat out good. Tobacco Reviews says of it:

“An incredible blend of premium dark red and sweet Virginias from the "border belt", light yellow Virginia from South Carolina, and dark-fired, spicy Kentucky. Slow burning and because no flavoring has been added, this blend has a real tobacco taste.”

Wonderfully flavorful and slightly zippy, its form is broken flake. I just bought ten 100g tins from SmokingPipes. I have no idea what “dark-fired” means — the tobacco is fairly light in color IMO. In any case, I’ll be keeping a good stock of this stuff on hand going forward.

I've got a few tins of the Dunhill that I've had practically forever. Bought them and never opened them because I always have several good VaPers on hand (and open) to choose from. One of these days I'll have to try it. For now, we'll say it's aging.

Picked up these two at antique shop not to far away. I am researching the Falcon, found several sites and dates are a bit fuzzy. This one is stamped PP4 which I think was the Rollit era but with the 4 instead of the 3 there for the die number I am not exactly sure. Either way it seems to be in great shape, maybe a bit of polish on the metal but I am not sure I shouldn't just leave it as is. Picked it up for $5 so I don't think I am out much there.

The Kaywoodie has the entire box with all the literature that came with it. Someone went to the trouble of keeping the box but the pipe looks like it has had a few bowls in it. The only bad part about the whole pipe is it doesn't look like they wiped off the rim after the bowls so it's pretty dark there. It's a 600 Syncro-Lok and the model number is a 80b, according to wiki seems like a really late 60's or early 70's with that syncro feature.

Woo hoo! I just bought a new pipe! I need another pipe about as much as I need another hole in my head. But when I saw this Ardor Urano Rhodesian estate pipe on SmokingPipes I knew that I had to have it:

Italian Estates Ardor Urano Rhodesian with Boxwood (DR) (2019) | Buy Italian Estates Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/italy/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=362903)

It has ALL of the characteristics I like in a pipe:

* Straight, not bent.
* Relatively broad, shallow chamber.
* Thick bowl walls that won’t get too hot (I’m a holder).
* Low-maintenance acrylic bit.
* Smooth, easy-to-clean rim.
* About the right length.
* Looks beautiful (in my eyes).

Its condition is described as “Smoked but rather clean.” I’ve purchased several of their estate pipes that were so described, and each of them was, in fact, unsmoked. The views of this pipe makes it clear that it’s unsmoked too. I’d have kicked myself if I’d let it get away.

I also ordered ten 50g tins of Capstan Medium (blue tin label) Flake. One of the few Virginia flakes that still come in the small compact-storing rectangular tins. Should arrive next week.

I received my Ardor Urano Rhodesian a couple of days ago:

Italian Estates Tobacco Pipes | Buy Italian Estates Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/italy/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=362903#fullscreen)

See my May 3 post, a few above, about its purchase.

It’s magnificent! The finest Ardor (for me) that I’ve ever seen, and I follow this hand made brand closely. The SmokingPipes blurb says it’s a palm-filler, and that’s no mistake – at 3.2 ounces there’s a LOT of briar in this baby.

Its craftsmanship is superb. E.g., rhe acrylic bit is melted into the boxwood accent piece, creating a smooth fillet. I’ve never seen that before on any pipe, and the acrylic-boxwood boundary is undetectable by touch. Better seen in the fourth photo in this link (the original offering):

www.pipe-24.de/epages/80769931.mobile/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/80769931/Products/AR4607

The boundaries between the smooth and rusticated regions are interesting too. The mortise is perfectly centered in the round shank – twist the bit 180° and the bit and shank are still perfectly aligned. Uncommon.

I got it for $153, about half the price of most new Ardor pipes currently on SmokingPipes:

www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/new/ardor/

None of which I like as well as mine. Cheap on a $/oz basis. :)

And it’s a sitter, very stable on smooth or hard surfaces. Yeah, I like it! Haven’t smoked it yet – want to gaze at it in its pristine state for awhile. :)

I did it again – bought yet another pipe that I scarcely need – a L’Antra freehand:

Italian Estates L'Anatra Smooth Freehand with Silver (Two Egg) | Buy Italian Estates Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/italy/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=366730)

I couldn’t resist – it’s one of the most beautiful pipes that I’ve ever seen. So graceful and classy. Nicely grained, and I love its color. Its chamber is relatively shallow and wide, as I like. I usually avoid bent pipes, but this one is only barely bent.

“L’Antra” is Italian for “The Duck”. Notice the tiny silver duck head atop the bit. Very distinctive compared to the usual “spot” that most makers use to mark their pipes.

$130 – very reasonable for such a gorgeous pipe.

Just bought a Missouri Meer Dagner Poker. Bought it per Amazon Prime for 28 bucks.
Steep price for a cob pipe but it comes with an acrylic bit. When you look at putting a Forever Stem on a cob, you're looking at around 30 for the stem and shipping alone and you don't even have a pipe yet.
Supposedly these tend to gurgle but I plan to mod it quite a bit what with a spherical heel and possibly a cherry stem. Safe to assume it won't smoke anything like it would have out of the box - be it for better or worse...
Anyway, another hunting coat / fishing shirt pocket pipe is the idea.

Pipe Smoker
06-14-2020, 11:50 AM
I now have the L’Antra in hand. It’s as-described, and beautiful. Craftsmanship is top-notch in all respects.

It’s apparent that the “silver” is german silver (a copper-nickel-zinc alloy), rather than Stirling. I’m good with that. German silver isn’t quite as bright as Stirling, but it’s still very bright. And german silver is much harder (more scratch resistant), and doesn’t tarnish (less maintenance). The silver-briar boundary is undetectable by touch.

The briar finish is satin (my preference), rather than glossy. The prettiest grain of any pipe that I’ve ever owned, and I love its color. A keeper!

I’m a pipeaholic! After recently purchasing the Ardor and L’Antra, (described above) neither of which I really needed, I found yet another pipe I couldn’t resist. This Mark Tinsky bulldog — a bulldog like no other:

American Estates Mark Tinsky Mocha Bulldog (5) (Four Star) (2017) (Unsmoked) | Buy American Estates Tobacco Pipes at Smokingpipes (http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/united-states/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=345859)

The L’Antra is beautiful, but this masculine Tinsky is better described as handsome. In fact, I think it’s the most handsome pipe that I’ve ever seen. I like everything about it. Its chamber is relatively broad and shallow, as I prefer. All of its other physical characteristics suit me too. Wonderful straight grain all around its bowl, and I like its color. The wood accent on its stem is harmonious (close harmony) with the briar.

The Ardor was the best Ardor I’ve ever seen. The L’Antra was the best L’Antra I’ve ever seen. And, yes, this Tinsky is the best Tinsky I’ve ever seen. Now: no more pipes! I swear...

Stopped by a local antique shop today and picked up this great pipe rack and these 2 pipes.
The bent one is just a run of the mill Grabow, and is unsmoked.

The straight pipe is a BB&S Rallye. Never heard of the brand, but upon some research it is a sub-brand of Barling.
Not sure when it was made. It seems like a solid pipe.
Great trip to the antique store.

Hahaha, I thought Fuentes were pre-rolls. That would be pretty expensive pipe tobacco though.

I don't think most of these pipes were smoked very many times, so sanitizing,'basic cleaning and polishing should be all that's required according to the videos I have watched. After watching about 15-20 vids on cleaning, polishing and loading the bowl and how to light and smoke, I am anxious to get started. Tonight I will begin the salt method of cleaning a few bowls and soaking the stems in oxyclean. I will continue until all are ready to be smoked. After a few are ready I will begin sampling some tobaccos.

It doesn't matter. Even the most expensive pipe tobaccos are a mere pittance per smoke when compared to smoking even middle of the road cigars. You could smoke nothing but Penzance and Stonehaven at eBay scalper prices; i.e. $60.00 per 8oz bag and still be under a buck a smoke.

That fact is appealing. I also am attracted that having a smoke doesn't require over an hour. I don't know if piping is something that will grab me, but I'm willing to give it a good shot. But I'm still gonna smoke my usual 3 cigars a month and hopefully smoke fewer cigarettes.

Well, when I sit down to smoke a pipe it's usually about an hour or more but I usually smoke flake. If you're looking for a sub for (shudder) cigarettes, get a pouch of 5 Brothers, or score some D&R Picayune. Those are shag cut so they burn quicker and are higher in vitamin N than many other blends. I smoke those very rarely because they remind me of cigarettes and I generally shy away from shag. Might be right up your alley tho.

Thanks Brian. I remember my dad also smoked a pipe off and on when I was a wee lad and my grandpa smoked a pipe multiple times daily. Right now I have been focusing on sanitizing and getting these pipes ready to smoke. I found a tin and about 6 baggies that have various tobaccos in them that were completely dry. I searched how to rehydrate pipe tobacco and got them all started last night. They were better this morning but I think still too dry, so I am giving them more time. I am still a ways from loading a bowl, but cigars have taught me a great deal of patience. We shall see if pipes are my thing.

Also something to keep in mind, if you smoke a pipe for a few minutes and put it down, then come back to it a couple hours later, it still tastes good. It's not like a cigar at all in that respect.

And hey, anything that results in less cigarettes is a good thing.

FVF and Grousemoor are nice. Grousemoor tastes like it has lemongrass in it, reminds me of a tea. Best Brown has a strong following so I'd probably pick up a tin or two just to cellar if it were me but I've had it and found my tastes lean more toward FVF. Perfection mix I've never had and the reviews aren't all that stellar. I think Skiff mix is an English... Were it me I'd pass as I already have plenty English ribbon cut and really prefer flakes. However it's probably quite good.

So here's my gift from Mrs. Cool Breeze. It's a Savinelli St. Nicholas. The stem is absolutely gorgeous. If my memory serves me correctly, this is Savinelli number 8 or 9. They've all smoked phenomenally and I don't expect this one will be any different.

Aged Italian Briar Wood Pipe

Stupid PayPal sent the payment as an eCheck, so it took several days to clear my bank, and PayPal still shows the payment as pending, so I don't know if they have gotten their money yet and can ship Monday or Tuesday.

Got no response from PayPal customer service.

I think it's really nice looking, and was 50% off from the Rnatreasures sale I posted a thread about for others to get a great deal on a pipe. Can't beat a 50% off of everything sale.

Also get a randomly selected Algerian Briar Pipe for free as part of the sale too.

Paid $31 with shipping for 2 brand new pipes. Can't beat that.

Can't wait to see they have shipped and see them in person. I don't think I'll be disappointed.

Also, their customer service is outstanding. Never heard of the company until I got an email about the sale, but I have no doubts after talking with them that they are legit and carry quality finished and unfinished pipes that I may have to try my hand at sometime. I enjoy woodworking, staining, polishing, etc so it would be right up my alley.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230827/4ded85d88c3bd476a9c60025cad07477.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230827/90e1f947edf06300bb6cd6691f6efb49.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230827/d87d4c562e2d8d869d5e26e8e483f1c1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230827/f24ff581e29d4e6dc3830947cf22d7b6.jpg

No name pipes, but nice looking and as long as they produce smoke, I'll be happy for the $6 each I paid.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230831/641642240de54119d1e15ebed579acd9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230831/fc6e1ad4a31e06913adcc28dcd9b764b.jpg
