Ordered some Samuel Gawith Cabbie's Mixture.
Vapers are my favorite and I like most every SG blend I've tried, so thought I'd give it a shot.

I found a sentimental dream come true when I found this matched set of Tinder Box Uniques. This is the same as the first pipe of mine that was not a drugstore pipe. Brings back memories of early piping days in the 70's. The Tinder Box Uniques were reportedly made by Charatan.

My latest pipe purchase was a dud. It was a late-night minimum bid on eBay that I immediately regretted. It was ugly as sin and when I received it, I noticed that it had literally broken in half and been repaired. It had a badly caked meerschaum lining.
Long story short, life is too short for ugly repaired pipes, so I broke it in half and threw it in the trash.
Onward and forward.

While sad, thank you for cleaning up the litter and throwing away what could have ruined a newbies experience and turned them off of this fine hobby!

Finally found some. I was in Ft. Smith (nearly 3 hours from home) taking the LSAT today and couldn't resist checking out the local pipe and cigar shop. They had Penzance in stock. $20 a tin but I didn't know when I'd find anymore, so I picked one up. I would have bought more but after staying in a hotel and eating out at restaurants for a day and a half, I didn't want to spend more money.

Man it is really good. The hype is justified with this one.

Maybe my fortune finding this in stock is an omen and set the stage for a good score on the test. Fingers crossed.

Yikes! That's pricey! Did it come with lube for that price?
Have you tried GL Pease, Gaslight? It's not the same but it's in the neighborhood of Penzance IMO, and it's available and reasonably priced.

If it were online I would agree that it was pricey.
But tins of Dunhill and Samuel Gawith are $17.99 here. Even Orlik tins are $16. Bulk tobacco (Lane, PS etc.) are $9.50 for 2 oz.
It's not the B&Ms trying to screw us though, we have a 68% tobacco tax here in Arkansas (excludes cigars, they have a flat .50 tax per stick). Big brother has to save us from ourselves by discouraging tobacco use.

So with that considered, I went ahead. It is the first tin I've ever purchased over an actual counter.

I guess in that light it wasn't a bad price at all.
We all need to be protected from ourselves by Big Bro. Punitive taxes and no lube are just what the Dr ordered.
I still think you ought to try Gaslight :pipe:

Gaslight is definitely on my short list to try. It will find its way into an order soon. :pipe:

There are several GL Pease blends I'd like to try. The only one I've had is Abingdon, which I did enjoy.

First of all, good luck on the LSAT score!

Re Penzance, y'all are making me feel guilty - There's a B&M in Charlottesville, VA who often has it in stock. I get down there for business once in a while, and pick up a few ounces when I can. I think the owner is now realizing how rare it is, and how lucky he is to be on Esoterica's distribution - every time I go there it's about $2 more per ounce :)

Picked up four 10 packs (Padilla, PDR, and Nica Libre) during CI's 10 pack with free 20$ gift card deal a while ago. I planned on spending about 100$ on D&R tobaccos anyway, so the cigars ended up basically being free.

With this whole FDA debacle, I'm planning on a few hundred dollars dropped on C&D bulks, figuring it'll be as good a time as any in smokingpipes runs a sale on C&D bulk in the next few months. If not, I may go through mars cigars (29$ a pound for C&D) and grab some cobs from them while I'm at it.

Looks like no G&H purchases for me, since I'd rather have 2x as much C&D for only a little more $. Too bad, I like G&H but I can't convince myself that I need anything more than a few ounces of ennerdale for posterity.

I think I must be the only guy in the tobacco community who isn't that worried about the FDA. I think government will do what government does, prolong and drag this out for years to come. If not, I guess I will have poop on my face.

You really can't go wrong with either G&H or C&D IMO. But I think the correct answer is really to buy them both myself :thumb:

Plus, if I had to lose one of those two, I'd have to drop the C&D. G&H are producing what I consider the best tobaccos in the world right now :piper:

I guess it was Pease who said something to the effect of "tobacco isn't going to get any cheaper". I'd rather lock in my price at 26 bucks a pound for C&D during smokingpipes sale, and get that stuff aging anyway!

I *love* G&H, don't get me wrong. But what a choice. I love, love, love C&D/Runowksi Burleys though. Pegasus is a desert island blend, and haunted bookshop is one of my all time favorite strong smokes. And so many others. If G&H didn't cost twice as much, it would change things a bit though. I do like C&D's less refined style, also, which is hit or miss taste wise for people.

My interest is peaked.

I'm sure there is a decent helping of Lakeland snot there, but that may be a good thing with this blend. Depending how floral it is.

Had a couple bowls of it this afternoon.
The first was straight out of the bag and pretty damp. I did enjoy it much more than I did the first time around. There was a floral/soapy taste that was prevalent. I assume this is the 'Lakeland' taste that everyone refers to. It was not unpleasant at all. The chocolate was noticeable and the latakia was present but in the background.

I tried another bowl that I rubbed out and dried for about an hour. The floral taste was less noticeable.

I actually think I liked it better on the moist side.

Definitely one to try.

ABF is the only straight burley I've found that I like – and I like it a lot. I like it straight, and also as a 50-50 blend with Dunhill Flake. Both are untopped, so no topping clash.

One effect though, that's been consistent through several tins: When I open a new tin of ABF, I'm a little disappointed in it relative to the prior Virginia or VaPer. But as I progress through the tin I find myself liking it more and more.

All kidding aside, ABF is really great stuff. It's on its own level when it comes down to quality leaf.

Found this cool 1970s (I think. Based on some quick research) Kriswill Danish Clipper. It is not smoked!
Snagged it for the princely sum of $8.

Yeah, I saw my local B&M has a ton they just got in stock (2016 and 2017).
The thing is, with Arkansas' 68% tobacco tax, it costs $31.00 a tin. Even at 3.5 oz, that's too rich for my blood.
I'll wait until P&C has it back in stock for $15.87 and grab a couple then.

I would like to thank The Internet for circumventing punitive tax laws and making high quality tobacco abundantly available at fair market prices to the common man - exactly the opposite of what nannystate governments have been trying to inflict upon their denizens for decades.

$18 for Nightcap and$ 21 for Escudo, all due to state taxes. And they are now trying to or already passed
a user tax on web purchases in Okla. They are trying to tax us into submission.I wont go into a rant here,
I picked up a tin of Nightcap just to say I did,but the clerk kind of tick me off when he couldn't stop
texting long enough to do his job. Those prices are in Edmond, they have since passsed another sales

Yeah its crazy.
We're pretty good on cigars. The tax is only fifty cents per stick, no matter the price. Same for a Padron 80 years or a Brickhouse.
That keeps our cigar prices within $1.00 of online prices, so I buy most of my cigars locally.

Can't do that with pipe tobacco.
Orlik Golden Sliced is $17.50 a tin at my shop. Not their fault though.
I buy bulk tobacco there every great now and then, but its rare.

Looks like a nice score for an aro lover but only the SPC Potlatch would interest me. I've always refrained from the goodie bag deal, leaving them for pipers less picky than me. I'm not above aromatics but I don't like 99% of them. I still have 3.9 of the 4oz of Lane 1Q I bought 4 or 5 years ago. Just don't like the stuff. Good to see you got something you enjoy :pipe:

I'll admit 1Q didn't quite meet the hype I've read.It is good but not one of my favorites. The LL Dark Red
is very good and will be on my want list.I tried a bowl of Cult Blood Red Moon, and I simply loved it.Didn't
think I would ever say that about a cherry blend, but the tin note blew me away. The taste was a tad
underwhelming but still quite good.It does need a bit of drying.it was very moist in the tin.I'm looking
forward to popping the top on that Potlatch, been on my want to try list forever.

I did something bizarre today. I logged on to SmokingPipes with the intent of ordering 25 50g tins of Solani 633, Virginia with Perique. They only had 13 tins in stock, so I took those.

But then I noticed Solani 639, Tropical Mango Flake. By no means am I an aromatic fan, but I've been so impressed with Solani tobaccos. For example, Solani 656, Aged Burley Flake, is the only straight burley I've found that I like (and I like it a lot). So I took a flier, and ordered five 50g tins of the 639. Hope I like it.

I also bought a tin of Dunhill De Luxe Navy Rolls for the free ride. DLNR is a classy VaPer.

The saddle stem. If you look at the page, the one at the bottom that says "Out of stock" is mine.

Pipes and cigars-- it was back ordered, but I put in an order for 5 lbs anyway, and they honored it and the discount price and shipped it this past monday. They don't currently have it in bulk, just tubs and pouches. I am not head over heels for it, but it's a solid OTC style burley, an for that cheap I figured why not.

While I'm at it, I have a bunch of CI gift cards I'd like swap. I was going to buy some D&R tobacco from them with them, but P&C is way cheaper-- D&R is 20% off, plus an additonal 20% off code I have. If anyone is planning a CI order and feels like helping me out get in touch.

The Rimboche SJ is my favorite from them. Picayune is also pretty stout and tasty, will probably grab a pound or two of that. I have a little bit of 3 sails kicking around, which is pretty good but not as good as Rimboche SJ since I prefer the cut of that and the perique of course. Haven't ordered yet, I need to find someone to swap my CI gift cards with and go with P&C. Their D&R sale is running til nov. 10 and the 20% off code til the 31st so I gotta get knocking on doors!

Savinelli Hercules 606 EX. This is a BIG pipe that I'm currently working on. Got it cleaned up, but it still needs some polishing. I may just sell it as is because it'll take longer to polish it than it would take to polish a semi truck. I put it next to the Kaywoodie so one can get an idea how large it is. It's definitely a Grizzly Adams sized pipe. I'm taking donations of pipe tobacco to see if I can get enough to fill it, as I only have a few pounds of tobacco..... ;)

http://i747.photobucket.com/albums/xx114/droy1958/DSC06553.jpg (http://s747.photobucket.com/user/droy1958/media/DSC06553.jpg.html)

Found this on the pipe:
The "EX" marking on this pipe stand for "Extraordinaire", meaning that this is a very large pipe. The Savinelli Hercules 606 pipe is well over six inches long and has a bowl depth of 2.12 inches! While some may be hesitant to pull the trigger on a pipe so large, this pipe sits in the hand very nicely and has an unparalleled ability to smoke cool, all the way to the bottom of that deep bowl.

Brand: Savinelli

Model: Hercules

Style: 606 EX

Since Forever stems are still not available, (and I have my doubts that they will be anytime soon or perhaps ever again), and I prefer shorter pipes, I ordered a few short cobs from Missouri Meerschaum. One each of the Stubby, Marcus, and Dagner Poker Cob.

Alas, tis true.

Have you seen this guy on teh 'bay? All his stuff is 9mm tenon - which is 0.354. Should be easy to sand down the 10 grand to fit a 11/32 cob pipe.
I don't like that they all seem to be the 'filter type' but what the heck...

They look nice but, unlike the Forever stems which are all one piece, those fitted tenons look thin and none too sturdy to begin with. I wonder how they'd hold up in a cob after reducing the wall even further.

Well you'd only be taking 0.005 off per side so I don't see a problem there. That and if they're bored for a 6mm filter - like they probably are - then they're likely just as strong at the joint as the OE stem... and I've never broken an OE stem... I've just chewed the bit till they've cracked. The biggest thing I don't like about the presence of a filter cavity is that you pretty much have to disassemble the pipe to clean it good because a pipe cleaner is like a hotdog in a hallway going thru that empty 1/4" cavity. I usually line the cavity with a porcelain tube and fit that to the bit... but that is another story...

Man, I've got to stop looking at this thread!

It is killing me. We are in the process of adoption; no one in particular - we just feel the desire to help a child that needs a family. Therefore, both PAD and TAD have taken a hard stop to help pay for adoption stuff. I know I'll be able to get back to it one day, but it sure is killing me.

One second thought, keep posting. At least I can live vicariously! :pipe:
And if you are of the inclination, please do pray for us in this process; and pray for our future adopted family member's safety, in the meantime!

Managed to find a coupon code for this "european sampler" for 5 bucks with free shipping on whole order. A pouch of john bull, Erin Go Bragh, and C'est la vie. The john bull is OK, had it before, will likely gift to an old slovak pipe smoker who'll smoke whatever though. The other two I may try and likely end up trading as I'm not into the aro's. But my attitude was I'd rather spend 5 bucks and get three pouches, then spend 4 bucks on shipping!

Didnt pull the trigger because i wanted my friend to pick a pipe out at cigars international that night for Christmas to get him into pipes. he picked one out that he loved but refused to let me buy it because of the price but he was eyeing up a second one that i am gonna get him without him knowing at a later time. while looking at the pipes i spotted the drew estate tradesman and it was down hill from there lol. i ended up buying it that night for myself as a early Christmas gift and i love that pipe. so far it smokes awesome i love the way it looks and love that it sits.

Nice score! If I ever own a Dunhill, an estate is what it will be. What did you have to give for it (if you feel like disclosure).

I'd call that a brandy all day long. AFAIK billiards have an almost cylindrical external profile.

I don't know if I'll top the rim to even it out; heck, I didn't even notice it until I looked at it from a certain angle. I'll probably just smoke it the way it is. The nomenclature is so weak as it is; if I did refinish it, the stampings would be gone.

Got this "The Pipe" on Ebay from Caking1960, a seller that I recommend. Most of "The Pipes" on Ebay have chewed up stems and I don't know if you can replace them because of the o-ring on the tenon. This one is in excellent shape and does not have a cake built up in the bowl - another thing to look out for. You're not supposed to let a cake build up in these, like meerschaums and clays.

I still have not pulled the trigger on a meer, yet. I need to do that one day!

Reasons to smoke a meer:
very absorbent - no need to rest them between bowls, kind of like a cob
they look good, lots of designs available, although I favor the classic pipe shapes
they gradually get a brown shade as you use them, from the juices migrating outward

Be careful when shopping for one though, look for block meer - the cheaper ones are molded from cemented meer dust.

That's a good point Bruck. I look for a reputable brand name to be sure that I'm getting real block meerschaum. Good ones are CAO, SMS, Altinok and others. Block meerschaum is very light, so think twice about buying a heavy meerschaum pipe. I had a meerschaum pipe that I smoked for years and it would never color up like it should have; finally gave up on it and decided it was one of those composite meerschaum pipes. It was a little heavy. Another thing to think about is African meerschaum vs. Turkish meerschaum. The African meerschaum is heavier and denser; I think they smoke hotter than the Turkish meerschaum pipes. I don't hear much about African meerschaum pipes lately, but they were in the market in the past.

Got this Christmas present just today. It's a hand crafted pipe made by Ranz Freehands; Ron Smith of our Knoxville Pipe Club (https://www.facebook.com/people/Ron-Smith/100008188929806 makes pipes and sells them. Somebody in the club bought this pipe to give to me after our December Christmas Party. We had one of those White Elephant gift exchange that went many rounds (7 or 8). Seems like everytime I picked a nice gift (2 pipes and a nice bottle of single malt), it would get stolen from me. I guess someone felt sorry for me and got this for me. The reason I got it so long after Christmas is that they left it at Smoky's Tobacco & Cigars and I just found out that it was waiting there for me last week. I'm very grateful to whoever got this for me!

No, I haven't smoked it yet. I've got other LePeltier pipes that I do smoke, and they smoke pretty good, very much like a meerschaum. And these are double-walled, so they don't get hot to the touch. You can usually get them for a song on Ebay.

I got a bunch of estate pipes today at an antique store and from Craigslist.
The three on the right were purchased from a fellow who answered a listing that I put on Craigslist asking for estate pipes. They are in fine shape and don't need restoring. From the top right downward, they are a Bones bent billiard, a Keyser Hygienic bulldog with a metal band, and a Jeantet Lovat. He gave me a hot tip that an antique store in town had pipes for sale. I drove over there and picked the six on the left out of a bag full of old briars. Got the six of them for $50. They are, from the top left downward, a White Bar bent bulldog, a Parker Matt bent pipe, a Savinelli Deluxe, a Sunrise Amber Grain bulldog, a B. Barling & Sons Londoner Dublin, and, at the bottom, a Sunrise Tawny Grain Canadian. Two of these will need stem repair or else new stems. They could all use a good cleaning and a couple need reaming.

That Jeantet Lovat is almost like new. I'm pretty happy with the new additions to the collection; they will keep me busy restoring them for a while. That Canadian on the bottom is in pretty sad condition; it's been smoked so much that the bowl is almost completely black in the upper 2/3. I wonder if that was what Sherlock Holmes's "well-oiled briars" looked like? On a couple of these, the owner had filed the stems down near the bit to make them thinner.

Came home extremely tired after a long few days at work to find my order of things to try from Smoking Pipes arrived. I think my wife was more excited than I was when I told her what it all actually cost. I was however too tired to take a decent picture.

One 50g tin each of:
Orlik Golden Sliced
Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky
Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture
Dunhill Dark Flake
McClelland Balkan Blue

Bulk 1oz samples of:
Peter Stokkebye Cube Cut
Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired Ready Rubbed
Mac Baren Golden Extra
Dunhill Nightcap
C&D Dark Chocolate
C&D Big 'n' Burley
C&D Old Joe Krantz
GH&Co Kendal Kentucky
GH&C Bob's Chocolate Flake
McClelland 5100 - Red Cake
Lane 1-Q

Plus pipe cleaners and a new pipe tool. Figure these should cover many of the varieties out there, in addition to what I already have.

On Friday, I ordered a special edition Dr. Grabow pipe from the factory. It is called Liberty and it commemorates the 130th anniversary of the dedication of the statue of liberty. There are two shapes, bent and straight, and two finishes, rusticated and smooth. I opted for the straight pipe, which is a billiard, and the smooth finish. The ordering process was like taking a step back in time about 25 years ago... the only way to do the transaction was to mail them a check or money order. That's okay though, I'm not complaining.

A little Everclear on a paper towel and turned the pipe over and "topped" it on the flat paper towel.
Doing it this way keeps me from going to hard, or the paper towel will tear.

The package landed this morning!! You have managed to three holes in my "collection".
I've been watching for a Bulldog,a system pipe and a Brylon to fill out my little group.
Thank You , You managed to nail all three. The Yello-Bole Nova Brylon Bulldog was in really
good shape, just a good cleaning and sanitizing and tomorrow i'll take her for a spin.
Started on the system pipe now,It does have a bit of cake and the bit will need scrubbing,
but it should be a great pipe when done. Thanks again.I hope you have as much fun as
you've given me.

Made another small tobacco order this evening.

Picked up a couple tins of Cabbie's Mixture, as well as 3 different McClelland Virginias that I haven't tried yet. I got Tawney Flake, Beacon and Boston 1776.
I have loved every McClelland Virginia I've had. Anybody tried these?

Well, I bought some more.

I got an email from smokingpipes.com saying they had the McClelland 40th year anniversary in. So I picked up three 100 gram tins of that as well. One to smoke and 2 to stick back and forget about for a few years.

Since Photobucket quit allowing 3rd party hosting, I've been casting about for another convenient way to post pix. Here's my attempt at using Amazon Prime.

(trying again...)

(dangit, it doesn't work)

Thanks for bearing with me :) In this spirit of this thread, this is a pipe that I bought on e-bay from a guy in Germany who's liquidating a bunch of old stock of unfinished pipes among other things. I sanded it, bleached it, stained it yellow, and polished it.

Bought my first Nording pipe on Ebay last weekend and got it today in the mail. Only paid $30 for it.

I bought a used Italian pipe on SmokingPipes.com this evening. It has ALL of the characteristics that I've been looking for:

* Good condition (4.95/5, lightly smoked).
* My favorite shape (squat bulldog).
* Smooth finish with darkish color, decent grain.
* Straight stem.
* Broad (0.83"), shallow (1.20") chamber.
* Thick bowl walls.
* Straight-up bowl (no forward cant).
* Acrylic bit.
* Good weight (1.5 oz).
* Respected maker (Luciano).

I don't have the time and patience to maintain vulcanite bits. And, since I'm a holder, vulcanite bits have no benefit for me. It's as though Luciano made this pipe just for me!

Placed an order at Pipes & Cigars during customer appreciation week and got the "Goody Bag". Here's what I got; the second photo is the goody bag.
That's a pound of Lane Burley Light without a Bite in the upper left.

Just signed up for ebay this week with the intention of looking at pipes. After much frustration (being outbid at the last possible second) I got an idea of what to do and won my first auction today.
It is a pipe stand with 4 pipes.

I got it cheap, and mainly for the stand. So if any of the pipes are worth smoking at all it will be merely a bonus.

I'll post up pics when it gets here.

IDK what you do but I don't mess with bidding up stuff in little increments. Ebay does that for you anyway. Just put in the max amount you're willing to pay and then forget about it - it doesn't necessarily mean that's what you'll end up paying. I've put in a bid for 80 bucks on an item with a week left to go that had something like $7.50 listed as the current bid and ended up winning it for something like $48.00

The Luciano squat bulldog arrived today. I was surprised; delivery was scheduled for tomorrow, and I didn't know that the USPS delivered on national holidays. There was another surprise too; SmokingPipes said that the condition of this pipe was "4.95/5, lightly smoked". In fact, its condition is 5/5, unsmoked. Very pleased about that!

Luciano pipes are said to be machine made, but hand finished. In any case, this pipe is very nicely made and finished. The borings (chamber, draft, and mortise) are excellent - perfectly positioned and crisp with not the least chipping.

This pipe has the thickest bowl walls of any pipe that I've ever owned. That's a blessing for a holder like me - it means a nice cool pipe in hand, even on hot days.

I think I'm going to like this pipe, but it'll be a few days before I smoke it. I like to admire a new pipe in its pristine condition for awhile, and to get a few measurements; notably, weight and chamber dimensions.

I've always liked the Canadian style pipe with the long shank and short bit.

I just got my first one. It will be here early next week and I'll post up pics.

Congrats! I hope you like it. I like the similar Lumberman style even better. It has a short saddle bit whereas a Canadian has a short tapered bit. I don't have a Lumberman, but I do have a Lumberpot (Lumberman stem and Pot bowl). I like broad, shallow chambers with thick bowl walls.

Had some pipe stock from P&C's customer appreciation sale arrive today, graciously repacked and forwarded by Hardheaded, thanks again.
Stuff on the left (pipe, bag, cleaners, tamp, bracelet and 3 tins) was their customer appreciation gift. Then a couple packs of pipe cleaners, a can of Molto Dolce, peterson wild atlantic, some 1-Q, LBF and meat candy. Also figured I'd try cellaring some golden slice and erinmore.

Pipe cabinet is full for now. Now I need to restock the wineador.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170907/1d0afb7d6735135b65d46969dc11ad74.jpg

Got all of this for $12.50.
I was mainly wanting the rack. Turns out the pipes look pretty good.
The two straight ones are a brand I've never heard of. They both say "Goldenaire" and under that "Imported briar". The band says the words "Gold filled".
They both actually smoke pretty well.

The bent one says "Ansell's" Washington DC
A little research showed that Ansells was a pipe and tobacco shop there in DC many years ago. I couldn't find anything about who actually made the pipe. I've only smoked it once so not quite enough to form an opinion.

The goofy one with the carved head says "RealBriar" Made in France.
Haven't tried smoking it. May not. I see it as mainly a novelty.

Anyway, I'm happy for the money spent.

Here's the Canadian. It is larger than I thought, but I am very happy with it. The only flaw at all is the stem needs a little polishing up. It barely has any rim darkening. It's an older pipe, but I'm thinking it wasn't smoked all that much.
I think it will be a good pipe for flakes, so I thought the first bowl would be this fine Virginia offering from McClelland.

So far (about 1/3 of the way through the 1st bowl) it is smoking very nicely and I absolutely love the look.
For what I paid (32.00 including shipping), I think I did pretty well.

It's a Savinelli Sherwood Rock Briar 804 shape.

Nice pipe. I have several Canadians, one of my favorite shapes. A couple are so long I have to keep churchwarden length pipe cleaners on hand for.

Cool Breeze, my guess is that if a retailer stamped his name on the side of a pipe, it probably wasn't an expensive one to begin with. But if it smokes well, it's a good one.

I won this pipe in a raffle at the Columbus Pipe Show a few weekends ago. It's a handmade pipe made by Clark Layton (Sloth Pipes). He takes a lot of care with them, making sure that the airway is open and passes a pipe cleaner.
