I have a question-- have you noticed any difference between McC bulk and tins with regard to humectant presence? I have only had two of their blends (PM Pipe, and 5100), both bulks, and while they had their merits, I really didn't like that there seemed to be a good bit of humectant/PG. Especially at the (nearly 50 dollar/lb) price point. I wondered if they only sauced the bulks with humectant. Not that I can afford to stock up on their tins either, being even more expensive than the bulks (plus I already have an unfortunate penchant for absolutely loving G&H blends already).
I try to stick with Stokkebye and C&D bulk, and hunting for mason jars at thrift shops, to keep things *somewhat* fiscally responsible ;)
I've only recently bought some McClelland bulks at my local B&M and I did notice that is more moist than the tinned tobaccos. Didn't really give it much thought but it is probably due to a humectant. Have you tried C&D Yorktown? It is supposed to be a good Virginia. Big Lots has Mason jars that are only $8 a case. They only have the half-pints and quarts and the quarts are not wide-mouth.

I heard tell that they were pressured, at one point, to add humectants to their bulks because the B&M's didn't like having to get it any special treatment. No idea if that's true or not. I hope nothing like that happens to C&D though, whose style I absolutely love. Haven't tried yorktown though, or too man of they VA's in general yet-- I did smoke some Orion's Arrow, and Three friars recently though, and found both excellent (and plan to buy a pound of each during Smokingpipes next C&D sale).
I can usually find jars for between 8-9 dollars around here. I've gotten oodles at thrift shops though-- I just check the rims for chips, and clean them good, and obviously buy fresh lids. Probably ends up being half the cost of buying new.

I'll have to start keeping my eye out for them when I go to thrift stores. My girlfriend and I go to them often but I don't remember seeing Mason jars.

That's what I heard. I kinda tripped over it, as someone posted that it just came in at Mars Cigars about the time I hit the thread. I was lucky enough to get this, but the Stonehaven was gone.....

A buddy of mine at the office keeps trying to score a bag online, but when it comes it, it's gone right away. This past week he said (I forget which etailer) had it, and when it called they said it sold out in 10 minutes.

You can never go wrong with Night Cap :) The main guy with whom I trade cigars and tobacco at work and I use it is our standard - not that Night Cap is the best tobacco out there, but it's probably the best stuff you can get at a reasonable price in bulk. So if it costs more than Night Cap, it has to be better; otherwise, just get some more Night Cap.

Most of the C&D bulk is quite a bit cheaper, at least at smokingpipes, and the leaf quality is great. Some really good English blends in their repertoire.

Yes, they're block meerschaums and they are good sized. One thing to look out for on ebay with buying a new meerschaum is the size. Some of the ones you see on there are small pipes and they don't give you any measurements in the description to go by. I lucked up and got these from a former serviceman instead of a dealer.

You got a great deal! I'm partial to the unadorned meers (although I do have one mini eagle head).
& yes, if they don't give the measurements of a meer on e-bay or on an etailer's site, it's probably a mini (the better places do indicate mini). And unless they specify block meer, it's probably composite.

You know, that is something that stood out to me with this one. It is so light that I almost thought it was made from something other than briar. It does say "Imported briar" on it though so I guess it is.
It's a good smoker. At first I wasn't sure because mine has a tapered bowl and I packed it very loosely the first time. I've learned that this pipe likes the baccy to be packed a little tighter than normal.
I'm thinking it would be good for flakes using the air pocket method. I'm going to have to try that out soon with it.

It doesn't often happen with a pipe for me, but there are some cigars that will hit me if they're big ones and I haven't eaten or maybe have not had a smoke in a few days.

I wasn't trying to be insulting or condesending, just saying that after trying several different blends and cigars,I have only had one or two that I felt a nic hit from.Tamboluka and Old Joe Krantz, and DE Undercrowns have given me a nice feeling, but the others have left me wanting a cig afterwards. Now my favorite cigar, Felipe Dominicans are mello enough that I smoke them as I would a cigarette, yeah I inhale.Guess I lost me "Political" standing there.

Oh no, I didn't take it that way at all.
I'm just saying that 35 years of smoking cigarettes is the reason you can't feel the nicotine from a cigar. Your body absorbs so much more when you inhale smoke. You're just more immune than most of us are.
Didn't think you were being insulting at all.

Just got a lot of a dozen estate pipes from ebay for a reasonable price. I guess about 10 of them could be refurbished into good smokers. There are Medicos, Yello-Boles, a Grabow or Two, and some no-name basket pipes, but there is also a WDC and a Wally and one or two possible pipe shop custom-mades in the mix. Not so much concerned with provenance or brand, but how good they smoke, so we'll see as I get them into useful condition. I even have high hopes for a pipe that has a small crack in the shank. The usual issue is un-removable stingers though, so I might end up more duds than I expected. Might end up selling some back into the ebay pool.

I recently bought a Forseti Natural in a bent brandy configuration. It's been a decade since I had smoked a pipe, and as a result of the passage of time (and waaaaaay too much underage drinking in college) I have no idea where my cob got to. So....here we are, spending money on something I already had once.

I don't mind Peterson's P-lip but I can't get used to Savinelli's version of it that they have on some of their dry system pipes. It directs the smoke right at the roof of my mouth and burns it before I know it.

Post what you think of the Louisiana flake. I got some a while back but IMO the Lakeland kinda ruins it. Hoping the perfume fades over time. Same deal with Rum flake.
Lakeland essence: the bane of good tobacco. Ranks right up here with PG soaked weed.

I loathe me some PG, but G&H is one of the most catering marquees in that respect, all quite devoid of humectants as far as I can detect. Luckily for me (and unlucky for you) I am fine with the lakeland thing. Cornell & Diehl is still my main stay for great leaf at almost half the price of G&H though.

From left to right, CT Broadleaf, Dark Air, Fire Cured Dark Air, PA Wrapper, and Perique, all from the KY grower from whom I like to buy leaves.
But probably about 2/3 of this will become Brohibas.

Yes, from Larry the Tobacco Butcher. Good prices and he usually throws in a couple samples of other things.
I picked up cigar rolling a couple years ago - took a lesson at the Graycliff factory in Nassau (Bahamas) while on vacation there. Watched a number of videos on the subject after that. Then I picked up some leaves and started doing it. First couple dozen really sucked, but I gradually got the hang of it.

Post what you think of the Louisiana flake. I got some a while back but IMO the Lakeland kinda ruins it. Hoping the perfume fades over time. Same deal with Rum flake.
Tried some of the Louisiana this afternoon. Certainly a unique flavor - fruity/nutty, strong, a hint of cigarette tobacco flavor. Haven't decided if I like it or not yet - I was smoking outside in the wind, so that was distracting, and it had trouble staying lit. I dried it out, will try it again tomorrow.

See now, that's just strange. Fruity nutty and all that. All I could taste was that rose-like Lakeland perfume covering everything else. And I've talked to others who don't even notice the Lakeland in it.

Sounds like you may be sensitive to that Lakeland essence. Possibly similar to how some people don't like cilantro; that it tastes soapy to them. Seems that perfumy Lakeland is like black licorice; either hate it or love it, not much in between.

Well I hate cilantro but I love black licorice :p. Never did like rose scent, I always thought it smelled like old ladies. Lakeland only tastes like soap to me when it's combined with latakia: isn't that strange? No latakia and it just tastes like perfume.

Had some more this p.m. after letting it dry out some. Not bad, still needed to be re-lit frequently. I didn't detect any kind of floral or perfume flavor. I'm not sure what the Lakeland taste is. Anyway, it was a strong perique, smooth, nutty, like a good VAPer I suppose.

Stopped by a B&M yesterday for some pipe cleaners.
Also picked up a pack of AF minis.
I am still drowning in tobacco, but am running out of my favorite, MM Country Gentleman.
So I ordered 2 bags from SmokingPipes. It was backordered until yesterday, as coincidence would have it.
This is my first purchase of tobacco that I wanted to restock on, not just a blind guess.

Oh I'm with you and for the most part, I don't care what they look like. One of my best smokers is a bent unfinished Savinelli Series III which has several fills that get more obvious all the time as it darkens. But I don't care. It smokes awesome.

Sorry, wrong thread. It was my last post of the night when I was sleepy.
But to steer it back onto topic, I did recently acquire a lot of a dozen estate pipes. Nothing spectacular, mostly Medicos, a Yello-Bole, some nameless basket pipes, one WDC, and one seriously old pipe with a horn stem. I was able to refurbish nearly all of them, the remainder likely to be re-auctioned for people with more skill than I to play with.

LOL! Now you can buy that new camper and tell the Mrs. you're paying for it with the money you saved :)
But seriously, maybe y'all can help me out with something... Present pipe aside, the pipes that actually sell for $Ks - what is it that makes them worth that much? I can tell the difference between at $30 Dr. G and a $150 pipe, but I don't think I could tell the difference b/t a $150 pipe and a multi-thousand dollar one.
Other things like vehicles, firearms, boats, guitars, adult beverages - I completely understand the price/value relationship. Not gettin it with the high-end pipes though.

Well I think in the case of that particular pipe, it was probably a typo, i.e., the seller thought he was entering $40 for the starting price and hit a couple extra zeros, maybe thinking they were on the other side of the decimal point.

Hi Bruce,
Short answer; better materials, better craftsmanship and aesthetics drive up the price of a pipe.
Quality briar that's been properly cured is expensive. Hand crafting is always preferred as the best method to make the best pipe out of a quality block of wood. Aesthetics become highly personal but any price above $300 (using an arbitrary high figure) is usually aesthetics based.
Bo Nordh pipes sell in the tens of thousands of dollars because they're traded as art, not smoking instruments. Some pipes sell as collectibles and can retain or appreciate in value even if smoked.
This seller just put a $4,000 tag on a $50 pipe. David (@Droy1958) proved that and got a good value and story.
Does price guarantee a better smoking pipe? No, impossible to tell without smoking it (and results differ between smokers), but a technically well crafted pipe, made by hand (and there are reasons for this), that uses the best briar, is the best candidate to be a superior smoker.
Regards,
Pete

I swear the pipe slope is greased with boogers and bacon grease! Two years ago: no pipes, no pipe tobacco. Today: over 50 pipes, meers, cobs, briars, clays, hardwoods, several pounds of pipe tobacco in dozens of blends and varieties, a few legal size file drawers full of blending leaves and components.
Run away now! Or if you PM me your address, I'll send you a starter kit :)

Got some bulk tobaccos in today and already have them jarred. Got these from Pipe & Leaf (website) or Tobacconists of Cary, NC (printed material). I'm very happy with this outfit. At first I was just grabbing tins that were on deep discount. When those dwindled down to mostly aromatics, I checked out their bulks and found what I wanted. Good customer service too.

Tab (@Haebar), the Gawith Hoggarth packaging makes me want to smoke, a reminder of the delicious taste but also a throwback to mid 20th century look in packaging. i hope that they never change it
Andrew (@MrMotoyoshi), alerted me to this 1984 Ser Jacopo Renaissance #306, brown sandblast. I didn't finish reading his email and I'd already purchased it from SmokingPipes who packaged well and shipped fast.

NeverBend: That is a nice Ser Jacopo! I am still looking for a billiard in smooth. Sold mine years ago and really miss it.

Hi Tab,
I created the Renaissance Series in 1984. The standards were, to my knowledge, as strict as any pipe ever made. In 2 years less than 20 were made. I own 6, only 2 that I had originally and the other 4 purchased in the intervening years. Hen's teeth to be sure. Jacopo didn't like making them because they had a very low yield.
If you like, I can keep an eye out for you, and certainly I'll look at any Ser Jacopo you may be interested in. After Barling, they are, in my opinion, the best pipe and pipe maker and the gap (to Barling) is less than the gap to the next pretenders. Superior briar, craftsmanship, hand made stems cut from solid acrylic table tops, I love 'em as much as my Barlings, perhaps a little prejudiced because they were my line.
Jacopo and I battled about the Renaissance Series. I wanted perfect shapes according to the drawings I'd given them. They needed at least a little license so there were a lot of 'near' Renaissance quality pipes made in 1984-1985. As far as what to look for in Jacopo, I recommend staying with the Coral Dot era (1997 and before). Up until late 1984 they used a coral dot encircled in silver and later just a small red dot. Can't promise that every pipe will smoke well, but these were the most consistently high quality pipes being made in that period. After 1997, the silver "J" period, there have been complaints about the quality being inconsistent and that's my feeling too. Stick with the coral dots and silver/coral dot.
Regards,
Pete

Pete,
The one that I had was purchased in the early 90's; it was a smooth, chunky billiard, almost like a Dunhill LB but with a Ser Jacopo (or your) style. I sold it about 10 years ago and that is one pipe that I really miss out of all of them that have come and gone.

Just a few tobaccos for me.
Some DE Meat Pie, because it's only $5.99 a tin so why not grab one every order.
A tin of SPC Mississippi River. Never tried it and looking forward to it.
A 1 oz sample of SG Best Brown Flake. Haven't tried that one either.

Doesn't that package just scream 1940s? The reason I like (and smoke so much) Gawith Hoggarth is that they taste today much as they did 30 years ago. Not Samuel Gawith or any other company I find to be as close to their roots as GH, who make no bones about buying tobacco from Africa but it's obviously very good leaf and these maestros know what to do with it.
Enjoy that Bird's Eye.
