I've got one that I got just the gourd and stem by itself, never used, on Ebay. Then I ordered a meerschaum bowl for it from J.H. Lowe (J.H. Lowe Smoking Pipe Repair Parts and Supplies (http://www.jhlowe.com/)). Ended up sending it and the bowl to Norwood's Pipe Repair for proper fitting. I've got about $75 invested in it. It's a medium sized one.

I've done it both ways but now I only humidify them slowly and though it can take months, I feel that the re-hydrated leaf smokes better with flavors more intact.

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the reply. I'm just wondering if the tobacco would be any good if I did rehumidify it. There's no telling how long it's been dried out and I might do better to keep the packages intact; at least they'd retain some collector value.

Cobs just came in, here's what I received:

2 Mizzou straight stem
6 Legends, 4 straight, 2 bent
1 General, bent stem
1 Cobbit bowl with a standard black bent stem, (not churchwarden)

One of the bent legends has a good size divot taken out of the top of the bowl, but still useable. Some have very minor flaws, none of them structural in nature. Some look nearly perfect. The General, in particular, appears to be flawless. Once again, money well spent.

That's awesome - I was thrilled to get a General in my last grab bag. It was structurally good but had a strong turpentine smell that took a while to dissipate.

Well this one was $1 + a few bux for shipping, so it doesn't offset too many other discretionary purchases :)

Smokes pretty well, not too hot. The clay bit is a little different - sticks to the lips till it gets wet. I think I'll coat it with some paraffin or some such.

Ironically the sale at P&C is costing me more per order as I get 3lbs at a time x $1.56. P&C is smart to gather more smaller purchases of a great baccy lineup.

I just called the B&M that I got it from and they said that it was Altadis. I was actually going to bump a thread about tin vs jarred tobacco to see what the differences were. It was already packaged in the ziplock as a weekly special. I asked for some English and that is what they showed me. Smelled good so I grabbed it.

So does this mean that it is not McClelland's? How is Altadis?
I am still trying to figure out this pipe world that I now live in.

How is the Veermaster compared to something like S.G. FVF?

They are both straight Virginias, but there the similarities end.

FVF is dark VA's that have been tightly pressed and heated. I think FVF is pretty tasty, but I usually gravitate towards less processed (and more natural flavored) tobaccos.

HV is my all time favorite tobacco period. It's amazing! Its a broken flake made from lighter VA's. I think it's untopped or cased. If it does have any casing/topping it's very subtle and I haven't noticed it. All I know is I crave it and HV accounts for more than half of all tobacco I smoke (and I smoke cigars too).

Not exactly a purchase. I decided I needed another MM Pride, so I took this one out of inventory and loaded it with some Angler's Dream. Walnut shank. I love the Prides, just wish they had bigger chambers. Like all cobs, it smokes fine out of the gate, but they really shine once they get seasoned from smoking.

This is my first new cob in over 3 years. My other 15 or so are still going strong.

Hamborger Veermaster is Grand Illusion by Styx; Full Virginia Flake is more Foriegner's first album. And if you're not from the seventies, that probably won't make much sense. In fact, it probably doesn't make much sense anyway.

Clay pipe, just arrived from e-bay. Been wanting to try out clays for a while so I pulled the trigger on a couple. You can see from my deck railing that the stem is approximately six feet long, which makes it the longest pipe in my collection :) Actually the stem is a little over 6" long which still makes it the longest pipe in my collection.

There's a T on the other side of the bowl. Supposedly this is a reproduction of a Thomas Dormer pipe design from the 18th century. Works for me :)

Smokes pretty well - just polished off a bowl of Lane Burley Light.

Mine tries to break my legs about once a year. I load up a bug sprayer with about a 50% bleach solution with a dash of laundry soap and soak it down good, preferably on a cooler, clody day. Then I toss a few handfuls of sand on it and scrub it with a push broom. Then it's on to the pressure washer to blast it clean. Usually lasts a year or so. Mine needs a good coat of sealer too.

Probably will be a waste of money but figured it had good reviews and really liked the look of it (being a maritimer living in the prairies) so while placing an order for other things I added it to the cart. I only have 2 pipes so as long as it's not terrible it'll be nice to have another to add to the rotation. A little annoyed though, the tracking's showing eta of middle of next month...

My girlfriend actually bought me one of these recently for my birthday because the anchor matches a tattoo of mine. Someone told me they might be pear wood, and I'm seasoning it accordingly. It smokes well for me thus far after a few bowls. The drilling in the stem is slightly unconventional but doesn't seem to have any ill effects. Even if you don't like how yours smokes they are a lovely display pipe, very pretty. My only issue is after the first bowl, the tenon has come a bit loose in fit, but that's nothing that can't be addressed with a bit of handiwork and maybe a dab of CA glue

I fix loose stems by rubbing them with bee's wax. It works well, and lasts up to a year before needing another ten-second rub.

Anyone handy should always have bee's wax on hand (heh). It has a million uses. It makes hard to open drawers slide open easily, and everyone has a couple sticky drawers at home (heh).

I have been chasing this particular pipe for over a month. When I first laid eyes on it the guy wanted $250+ shipping. Consulted my pipe advisor and he said it was no good--Bent. We get past that awkward moment and he allowed as it was a fine pipe at half the price. Told the guy it was a $100 pipe. While I was waiting for seller to drop the price, he pulled the listing?! Did I lose it?

http://i.imgur.com/0xcE7zu.jpg

Pipe advisor came to the rescue. He found the ebay listing. $150 CAN and free shipping starting price.

http://i.imgur.com/yb4nqGm.jpg

Now I didn't want it, I NEEDED it. Dat coral dot.

http://i.imgur.com/5VtfA8u.jpg

I waited until the last second and bid $156 Canuck. Was the only bidder and he had to give it to me $112 USD shipped. I reminded him I was the guy that wouldn't pay $250 in his previous listing just to twist it a little. He said I got a good deal and left it at that. Fifteen days later and it looks and feels better in person, not a spot on her and smokes like chimney. She's an inside pipe, for sure.

Scored this James Upshall/Barry Jones made Astley's carved billiard. Upshall didn't make any rusticated pipes until a few trial pieces in 1988 but Barry made them more regularly in the mid 1990s when I believe this pipe was made. I was surprised how accomplished Barry's rusticating technique was but he'd actually learned and perfected it at Charatan (who made some part carved pipes).

Astleys stamped their nomenclature on pipes made by famous makers but their main supply of high grades came from Upshall from 1980 through the 1990s. Some pipes with their name are ordinary but this is one of the nice ones.

After Barry had carved the pipe he'd put it back on the lathe and trim the top inside of the bowl to eliminate carving that had edged into the bowl. You can see that the chamber widens slightly toward the rim and the wall thickness is slightly uneven and a little thinner.

The seller called this a Ben Wade Reject although it doesn't appear to branded. I'll be better able to tell more precisely what this pipe is when I see it in hand but it's definitely a Charatan handmade pipe. If it's branded then it probably dates from the early 1960s, soon after Lane acquired Ben Wade. If it's not branded (Ben Wade) then it's probably a little older (1950-1962) but I'll need to see the work to the bit and button to (hopefully) be more precise in dating it.

In their earlier history, Charatan (pre and early Lane era) made exclusively handmade bowls in smooth finishes. To my knowledge, Charatan discontinued selling Rejects sometime in the 1960s and began to, partially or completely, sandblast or rusticate (most) of the former Rejects and sold them as either lower end Charatan Handmade models (still costly) and as the Ben Wade Handmade series. Some City deLuxe pipes that I’ve seen are Charatan smooth handmade 2nds but I don’t know if this was a brand that they owned but by shaping they appear to be mid to later Lane era (late 1960s into the 1970s).

These Reject pipes were made from the same exceptional briar as Charatan firsts and are 2nds only because of naturally occurring blemish(es). James Upshall followed the same culture as pre-Lane Charatan in making only smooth firsts and their eponymous Tilshead (2nds) pipes. I coined the Upshall motto as an homage, The Tradition Continues...

The seller had three of these pipes, (Ben Wade) Rejects but I found them only minutes before the auction closed. My apologies because I would have mentioned them on the forum. I paid $19.97 + $4.54 shipping. I would have bought all three (one other sold for the same price) if they were billiards. :) I assume the marks on the bowl to be scratches, perhaps some dilwit etched around a flaw. The rim is in excellent shape and the wall thickness and this pipes mass (given the era that it was made) insure that it was handmade.

I'll post about these pipes and the seller in my ongoing eBay commentary thread in more detail.

Pipe arrived in excellent shape save the dilwit scratch that was the flaw. It's not marked Ben Wade so it's a Charatan handmade second. Stem dates this pipe to the early 1960s, so I'll call it a 1962. Bottom half of the bowl has a dense carbon cake that will take some elbow grease to get out.

Scratching the flaw in a pipe is like digging out the knot on a wooden table. Knots are part of the wood and I'm not sure what possesses someone to do this other than ignorance, boredom and stupidity.

I recommend looking for pipes like these to get some of the best made bowls with wonderful briar at great prices. Ask me if you have any questions about a pipe that you're looking at and I'll be glad to help (and salivate) if I can.

1988 Barling Billiard sandblast, cumberland style stem. Really big pipe, 7-1/8" long, 2-7/8 inches high.

By 1988, Barling hadn't made a pipe in perhaps 15 years and I'm sure that it was made by either Billy Taylor (Ashton) or Les Wood (Ferndown), both of whom made/make handmade pipes like this with handmade cumberland stems. The shaping is more refined like Ashton but I'll ask Dave Field for his opinion. Would be my first Ashton or Ferndown. RIP Billy.

Well, I saw it was a Lat/VA blend, which the Navy is also but the Navy has the rum flavoring added to give it the "navy" flavors.
I figured the Balkan would be similar.

Anyway, its a SG flake I haven't tried so I'm looking forward to it. I've loved all of their flakes so far except for 1792. I can take it or leave it.

And yeah, I expect the quality of the product to be superb. The guys and gals at SG for sure know how to manufacture a flake.

Careful with type of wax since it gets into the recesses and can tun milky. I think Halcyon is made for this but don't quote me. Some Fiebings stain but you probably know that.

Barclay-Rex handmade Poker

The Nastri family, Vincent (father), Vinny (son) and Joanne (Vinny's wife)) were among my favorite customers and I've been looking to add one of their handmade pipes for many years. Most Barclay-Rex branded pipes are private labels made by others, and although I can't date this pipe, it has many characteristics of Vincent's work. I do smoke some pokers.

Size, grain and shank / rim characteristics indicate handmade and though it's possible that Barclay-Rex resumed making pipes since I was last in the store, (2001) (Vincent had passed sometime before this), I'll accept this one as a Vincent original unless there's evidence to the contrary. Condition looks excellent, really crisp rim and little, if any, stem chatter.

The seller doesn't accept PayPal and I think that put off most potential bidders so I got the pipe for $19.53 (shipped). Just mailed the check, it will take longer than normal to receive but I can wait a few weeks more.

Astute comment. I smoke billiard family bowls, almost to the exclusion of all else, yet over the years I've had passing affairs with apples, pokers and lately, perhaps due to comments by @freestoke (http://www.cigarbum.com/forum/members/freestoke.html) (Hi Jim), smaller pipes too.

In pipes you can always have meal of your choice but sometimes variety has its benefits.

My latest Pipe tobacco of the month club shipment for September from Pipes & Cigars:

Club Price Separate price
Scandinavian Tobacco Group Cult Abacus 1.75 tin 2 8.76
McClelland Truffle 4 bulk 1 8.76
Scandinavian Tobacco Group Half & Half 1.5 pouch 2 8.74
MacBaren Old Dark Fired 4 bulk 1 8.74
35.00 $35.00 P&C Price $41.08
I paid $35.00
$6.08 total savings

Usually there is a more significant savings with this program; this month was very marginal. In addition, they are supposed to include 4 tins for the double-down sampler but this month they substituted another 4 ounces of bulk for the second group of tins without explanation. I would much rather have the tins than a bulk offering as it is described in the item's description. This is the second month of only marginal savings ($3.26 in August); I'm considering discontinuing after buying the samplers since late 2014. The surprise of not knowing which tobaccos will be in each months offerings are one of the factors for participating in this "club". It seems that they are getting cheaper and cheaper with each month's choices. While I'm complaining, another little thing that slightly disturbed me is that they didn't even bother to label the bulk tobaccos. Of course I can tell which is which by doing a little research, but it just seems lazy to not label the bags. As some of you expressed in the past, I can do better by just spending the $35 on tobaccos that I know that I will enjoy rather than have someone pick some out for me. One factor that is in their favor is that the tobacco club shipments are "free"; no postage is charged.

Nice paid of pipes Tab.

I've been a fan of the Punto Oro Corallo for nearly 40 years. Even after I was importing several lines of fine pipes, I sold a lot of Punto Oro Corallos, enough that we remained a Savinelli national Top-5 pipe account.

When I went to England, in 1980 (First Dunhill Pipe Conference), I brought a mediocre smoking, group 5, Dunhill Bruyere Zulu to the (Dunhill) factory and had Bernie Knighton carve it like a Punto Oro Corallo in natural rustication. It actually smoked a little better but I traded it some time later :).

By 1981 I discontinued all my other private label branded pipes in the store, except for a Punto Oro knockoff that was made for us by US Tobacco. I was assured that it was our exclusive (and I was ordering in multiple gross quantities) but they started appearing in other stores so that, effectively, the Tilshead (James Upshall 2nd) became my house brand pipe in the last half year that I had the store. All the Punto Oro look alike pipes, (that I've seen), that sometimes surface on eBay, originally with lucite stems and sometimes ferrules, were my design.

You have the original and glad that it smokes well, they're excellent pipes!

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the interesting input of your experience with these pipes! You have a wealth of information about pipes and tobaccos. I have a fondness of the Savinelli Punto Oro Corallo pipes myself. Once I had one and sold it on Ebay and regretted it, so I went hunting for another one. They do seem to be lighter and to smoke a little cooler than most.

Glad that you got a nice one Tab.

I originally under-bid this pipe at $43.07 but two days later received an offer to Buy-It-Now for $42.07 (my last bid), presumably because the buyer backed out. $42.07 was too high (my bad) so I bid the minimum and got it for $29.95 + $7.50 shipping, more realistic. It's a 1963/4 Barling, handmade bowl and stem. I've owned only one or two Barling Pots and haven't had one in more than 30 years. A lot of smokers love the Barling Pots, I never understood the fuss, but at the price, to get mostly pre-transition quality, I'll re-visit.

The color and density of the stain and patina are lighter and different from later Barling pipes. The thickness of the rim shows that it was a cut-down that was probably intended to be a large billiard. Needs a sound restore but it looks structurally sound.

Very heavy cake but the shank/stem join is nice and tight and hasn't been abused. Should restore pretty well.

I think that pot is rather handsome, Neverbend. But then, I guess I find that most shapes, well executed, are pretty handsome. Especially more traditional ones.

I picked up a very neat little Jeantet Prince that came in the mail today. It was 15 shipped. I will get some pictures tomorrow. I cleaned the rim, reamed, and did some sanitizing. The stem is a bit oxidized which I will get to, but it's in quite nice shape over all, and I like the small size.

The top one is an "Old-Vic"
The Middle one is a James Middleton "Middletonian"
The bottom one is something of a mystery. The seller claimed it a "Friar",but that is because the B had worn down.On the stem is a F in a diamond inline with the stem on top.It does have 920 stamped on the bottom and I believe made in London.I haven't yet found any thing online to point to a specific maker.

Hi Tab,

Where in darnation do you find these lots!

The Briggs caught my eye because it could have come from my shelf in the early 1980s. John Rolfe and Half and Half would have caught my eye (in the 1980s) for being a little different. John Cotton made no memory impact.

What are the markings on the tins, especially the John Cotton?

A "binary" measure of age is the presence or absence of a UPC symbol. They came into use during the mid to late 70s (not everyone adopted them at once, but they were pretty much ubiquitous by the end of the 70s).

I picked up a bunch of Velvet earlier this year and was wondering the same thing, then I noticed that the date was stamped on the wax paper envelope inside the tin :) (October 1993 in this case).

In some cases, the presence or form of warning label is an indicator, although I can't provide a comprehensive taxonomy on this.

It was an auction listing on Ebay that included some old cigar boxes and tobacco tins. What sparked my interest was that the description said that the larger tins hadn't been opened. The John Cotton tin has a sticker on the bottom that says:

U.S. Distributors
James B. Russell, Inc.
25 Parkway,
Upper Saddle River,
New Jersey 07458
U.S.A.

On the side of the John Cotton tin it says:

Actually, yes, the price tag gives you a ballpark as well.

Ebay is full of vintage tobacco lots. I like to search for "tobacco tin unopened" and "tobacco tin sealed." For a while there, someone was liquidating what appeared to be the holdings of an old tobacco store; not sure if this is still active.

Excellent points to look for. In my experience (and memory) ~1980 UPC was on most larger company goods but not smaller companies. Boutique tobacco was being sold by small shops that didn't have digital registers for many years after. Elephant & Castle never had a UPC (through 1989), and we never had a single request for it.

I have no idea who owned the John Cotton name when this tin was made but James B. Russell went out of business, I believe, soon after 2000 and Made in England fits being at least that old. I'd suspect that it was made by Gallaher but I don't know John Cotton's Mixture (does it say #1 & #2?). It's an English (Latakia, Oriental, Virginia)?

If it's ~2000, (15 or more years old), an English Mixture and packed without pressure....sounds good. That would be high quality and better conditions to remain vibrant. Is the tobacco dry?

California required labeling as of November 1989 and the wording changed ~2011. Don't know about other warning labeling.

California required labeling as of November 1989 and the wording changed ~2011. Don't know about other warning labeling.

No, it doesn't say #1 or #2. It is an English blend. The tobacco was dry when I received it, but I have revived it.

In my short experience, I would say no. I have one that the alignment is off a little, and it feels weird if I leave it loose. If it's not threaded, you can put it any way you prefer. I'm also worry if I buy one that is stuck, I would be tempted to work it back and forth. If it's threaded and I don't realize it...could be bad. I have a couple and they smoke fine. Hoping someone with more experience chimes in.

George, excellent answer.

Pros: Less stress on the shank, quick assembly, accurate alignment.
Cons: Misalignment is persistent.

Most screw tenons are also condensers (metal). Once out of alignment the screw thread remains that way unless repaired or (more likely) kludged. A small piece of masking tape on the threaded tenon may help.

If your question was, 'do they smoke better'? No, they'd smoke the same other than your preference regarding the metal condenser.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<i got a question......are threaded stem pipes better???>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I don't think so; I think they are less desirable than push-pull stems. If they get overshot like they often do, it is a major hassle to get them back into adjustment. The exception to this are the drugstore pipes with the "Ajustomatic" stems where you can just keep turning the stem until it aligns properly (they are self-adjusting). The push-pull stems are much less hassle as long as you don't pull them out when the pipe is hot. If you pull them out when the pipe is hot you run the risk of cracking the shank. Even if you get away without cracking the shank, it makes the stem fit looser every time you do so.

Got a bunch of old tobacco on Ebay:

http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/ah50/haebar/Cigar%20Bum%20Photos%20001_zpsfyjyixa6.jpg

Does anyone know how old these tobaccos are?

The John Cotton's Mixture was produced by John Cotton Ltd.
The John Rolfe Pipe Mixture was produced by House of Edgeworth.
The Half and Half has a free pipe tool in it.
The Briggs Mixture was manufactured by United States Tobacco Company.
The Best Virginia is from the Apothecary Shop in Williamsburg, VA.

Hey John,

Have you broken open the Best Virginia yet? I see that there are still some up for auction, and it's extremely tempting to me, but I'd like to see first if it seems to have been stored correctly.

No, I haven't opened it yet. It feels okay from squeezing the box.

Just got these in! Ordered them from Pipe Divan in Ireland and they arrived in 7 days (five business days). Many orders from within the US take this long or longer. Plus, the two together only cost me $125! Pipe Divans customer service was excellent and I will order from them again!

It's a Stanwell Hans Cristian Anderson with a sort of canted Dublin not-quite-a-Zulu bowl. I've always wanted a slightly more proper Churchwarden than the semi-Church McCarter I have now, and this fits the bill. Now I just need to track down a 9mm adapter 'coz this guy doesn't use filters.

I ordered a flat bottomed Decatur Rustic Poker and it arrived Wednesday along with 5 tins of Frog Morton (Froggy Went A Courtin' Sampler.) I've only tried the "On the Bayou" so far but really enjoy it.

The pipe disappointed me however as the stem is too heavy and the bowl doesn't sit flat on the table; this is the reason I purchased this shape: to be able to set it down!

It was an inexpensive (read: cheap) pipe and I guess you get what you pay for. :thud:

Just a single tin of Dunhill Elizabethan for me. Pipes and Cigars' shipping is reasonable enough that it is still cost effective to just purchase a single tin over buying locally. I buy cigars from my local shop often, but I can't pay $20 for a tin of tobacco.

Not sure what to call this. Guy inherited his grampas pipes. He is an Australian mechanic and and started "restoring" them the way you would a car. Assuming Xmas gifts count here, my wife gave me a Peterson Kinsale XL26 smooth bulldog with p-lip, and a Stanwell WO Larsen 2015 sandblasted bent panel pipe, plus a lighter and pipe tool.

How many girlfriends does your son have, and why couldn't someone help her up? :)

Been wanting to add another pipe to the rotation so I stopped by the B&M this afternoon and picked up an unfinished Savinelli. It is a series III which means the briar has some fills but I aint fancy so not really worried about that.

I'm on the balcony now with it and it smokes as good as any pipe I have. Really nice smoker.

It will be dedicated to VA blends and Vapers so I'm breaking it in with some Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture.

Well, 2 days in a row. :)

Was at an antique shop today and picked up this pipe. It is a King's Cross, which a quick Google search on my phone told me was a sub brand of Savinelli. So I trusted it would be a decent smoker and picked it up for $15.

It has some rim darkening and teeth chatter, but a rubber bit covers that anyway.

It's got a salt treatment in it right now so maybe Wednesday or so I'll see how she smokes. It's nothing special but should be a good smoking pipe I think.

If anybody has any more information on these like what years they made them or anything like that, feel free to chime in and enlighten me.

Are you going to finish it, or just leave it raw?

Tin of each of Frog Morton Cellar & Bayou, 4 oz. of PS Luxury Twist Flake tobacco and an Early Model Super Grain Kaywoodie. This pipe is stamped with a four digit number which situates its production year between 1931 and 1938. Because of the introduction of the "Imported Briar" stamping in 1935, the pipe has been manufactured between 1935 and 1938....

I was hoping that Pipes & Cigars was going to have a sale during the holidays but they didn't.
Aguineapig told me about a 20% off coupon code to Cigars International right before the new year so I stocked up on some McClelland Virginia tins for cellaring.
I ended up with 20% off, free shipping and a free Colibri Macanudo cigar cutter.

Nice! that's a good little boost for your cellar.

I just got a lb of Stokkebye Proper English in yesterday, used their free shipping code, and paid for most of it with the gift card I got with a ten pack of 5 vegas classics. So ten 5 vegas, and a pound of proper English for 28 bucks. I paid for it using money I trickle-accumulate from survey sites and clicks; I actually pay for a good bit of tobacco that way.

I have a question-- have you noticed any difference between McC bulk and tins with regard to humectant presence? I have only had two of their blends (PM Pipe, and 5100), both bulks, and while they had their merits, I really didn't like that there seemed to be a good bit of humectant/PG. Especially at the (nearly 50 dollar/lb) price point. I wondered if they only sauced the bulks with humectant. Not that I can afford to stock up on their tins either, being even more expensive than the bulks (plus I already have an unfortunate penchant for absolutely loving G&H blends already).

I try to stick with Stokkebye and C&D bulk, and hunting for mason jars at thrift shops, to keep things *somewhat* fiscally responsible ;)
