Couple little things I've picked up. Been out of town so haven't been able to post:
The top pipe is a Brigham 1 dot Pot shape, the one below is a little Mastercraft with CB-like rustication. I think the tobacco is self explanatory :p

The trip was great. Cloudless skies with temps in 80s the first two days, cooling to the 70's by the third. At night, the coyotes were in fine vocal form, and the only rattler I encountered was roadkill. I was on a bit of a latakia kick and smoked Dunhill Early Morning Pipe all weekend, but the other tins I took did not go to waste thanks to my tobacco-less friends.

Thanks for the heads up about the Dunhill tins on Smokingpipes.Com. At first I thought that the listed prices were already discounted and I wasn't impressed but they take off 25% in the cart and that impressed me enough so that I'm putting together a much needed order (yeah, needed like that hole in the head that I'm trying to find).
I smoked all of these tins back in the day except for the Navy Rolls that you and @JimInks (http://www.cigarbum.com/forum/member.php?u=180) speak so highly of, so I added a few of them too. I ordered 8oz bulk of #965 and Nightcap from Pipetobacco.Com (they're 25% off too). It'll be interesting to see how Durbar and Aperitif compare to what I remember of them.
Adding to that hole in the head I purchased a Barling

I already smoked it...or at least what I could. It was only a buck and I just wanted to try it to see if I'd want a bundle as a cheap stick. It was a pleasant smoke, but the construction issues put me off. The 20 Schizo's I got are flawless in construction and smoke pretty damn good for a dollar stick. Love em.

I loved the Pine Grove! It came really dry but damn was it a nice smoke. It was smoky, fragrant, and fairly sweet. Really enjoyed it. Too bad I don't have ANY twists in my stash at the moment, I can see how it would benefit from a "kick in the pants".

Based on the the type of stinger, two-digit shape number, Flame Grain nomenclature and round/inlaid logo I estimate product from 1938-1939. After my father-in-law it's the oldest thing in the house.
And the July Dog Fry is coming up soon - you gotta have (another?) bulldog, right? :D

How was the Raleigh show?thanks for the kind words. I just smoked a bowl number one withl some kind of hazelnut aromatic and the pipe smokes fine as frog's hair. I don't like talking about prices but I will tell you the Raleigh show was well attended and everybody seemed busy there. The Richmond show closed its doors this year and I think a small amount of traffic came from Virginia just to attend.
also be aware that the first annual pipe show in New Orleans Louisiana will be the first week in October this year. The show will include an optional tour of a perique processing operation with transportation lunch and beverages included for a modest fee. I would really like to do that but doubt I can make it down there. If you're near NOLA, I sure recommend this especially if you smoke a pipe!

It's that time of year when I stock up on cobs. Memorial Day weekend is when we have our big annual get together up north in the hills. There are usually about 40 people there and although few of the women will indulge, most of the men, even nonsmokers, will have a bowl or two. One of my friends supplies cigars and I supply pipes and tobacco.

True! Man, you should have seen what we did last night! (no, that's not what I'm talking about!)
We have three boys (ages 9, 11, 13) so we don't get to go out much. My mom took the boys for the weekend, so my wife and I were trying to find something to do last night. After almost 15 years of marriage, our main criteria for a date is "what would make the best memory/story?".
Well, I found that an avant garde experimental jazz duo was playing, so off we went. It was crazy and amazing.
Here is a taste!

http://i.imgur.com/2ci7qbm.jpg
A friend was proxying this for an older gentleman. It appeared unsmoked.
http://i.imgur.com/Z9I89x9.jpg
The light makes it appear to have a long flaw on the front quarter panel, but I assure you it is a trick of the light. It is smooth as a baby's bottom.
http://i.imgur.com/xnTKREQ.jpg
I really wanted some plateau briar showing and this pipe delivers, along with a cavernous bowl.
http://i.imgur.com/atYFbUa.jpg
I love the freehand style and crazy grain... is it a flame grain? I'm still learning the lexicon, but I know what I like, and this pipe spoke to me the moment I saw it. I'm almost certain this is the last nice pipe I'll ever buy, other than that sweet Neerup Bent Apple I have my eye on. Oh, and those two Savinelli Authors I've got dibs on. And then THATS IT!
Thanks for looking.

Just put a coral sticker over the stem :p
And be sure to remove that possum hair before smoking.

Beautiful pipe Jim. I loved your comment that it may be a freehand but that doesn't mean hands free!
The term straight grain is always subjective to the smoker and maker. Companies do mark their pipes as 'straight grain' but that's their opinion and sometimes their opinion is well, prejuduced :). In a general sense, straight grains should be pipes where the grain flows from rim to heel in parallel straight lines. Flame grain usually connotes that the grain flows similarly but may be angled one way or another or both ways.
No two straight grains are the same and they vary in quality with the ideal being the tightest (least room between the grain) and straightest.
Your pipe was cut from plateaux briar (that's the burl exterior on the top of your pipe) that's usually the source of the best grain and it's often the most expensive cut of briar. The shape of the pipe affects the quality and amount of straight grain that can be expressed on the pipe. Your pipe was handmade to follow the contour of the grain. Had your block of wood been made into a billiard it would necessarily have had mixed grain around part of the bowl. You'll sometimes see the term, 360 degree straight grain that simply means that the owner feels that the straight grain goes all around the pipe.

Great knowledge drop, Pete. This is why I love you guys.
I think the reason I like that freehand is because the maker honored the grain. I've tried going against the grain when turning wood and the results are not as moving. There's something nicely organic about letting the wood dictate the final form.

Harvey, if you like that pipe, that is all that matters.
Pipe tobacco is MUCH cheaper than cigars, and easier to smoke on and off all day with out blowing out yer palate. If that pipe is briar it will be good for probably twoish bowls per day before getting swampy. Pick up a corn cob pipe, or two, the next time yer at Walmart or Walgreens. Corn cob pipes can be smoked over and over and over and over with out any problems.
Yer gonna be surprised at the array of flavors available with pipe tobacco, how easy it is to store (small mason jars), and how inexpensive it is.
It's briar hand made an carved with inlays, an has been charred. stem has air cooling an filter. I will probably only smoke it in the evenings, one or two bowels...Ive been lookin for something that said Lynn when I saw it, an this one does, even she say's it is me...looked in my turning woods an found a piece of aged cherry so when I have time Im going to make one of cherry.

Pipes need to dry out. Especially briar. Otherwise they stay moist and start to smoke real wet and impart a nasty taste to your tobacco.
They literally smoke "swampy" if not allowed to dry out.
That's why we all have a bunch of pipes...it's not PAD...really it isn't....honestly...Every pipe I buy is justified...quit judging me A-holes!

Hi Warren,
Looks like a nice lot of pipes. The two on the right look like Alpha made (Israel) that were good values in the 1980s (perhaps when these guys are from). The one on the left (sandblast, full bent) appears to have a hallmark so you should be able to date that it you wish and this site might be helpful:
http://www.925-1000.com/
Please let us know how they smoke and when the hallmarked pipe was made (if you discover the date) and enjoy them.

I swear that I'm no longer bidding, I have PAD but it's under control but it wasn't as evidenced by close to 30 pipes waiting for restoration so you guys understand the depths of my sickness. Had to buy a car, had to stop the PAD. Done.
No more bids but on eBay some auctions last a week or more. I knew that I had bid on the Jacopo (below) but I completely forgot that I had a low 'place-holder' bid on this Barling and I'd forgotten about it until I got an email saying that I purchased it. Had to man up and pay for it, wait for the pipe, restore it and smoke it. PAD destroys. I like destruction but I promise that my PAD is under control from now on. Really, I do.
Yes, there is one other item that i will bid on but that's an excepton. No more PAD.

I don't know the brand (Hardy) but it looks like a nice find and at a good price. Please let us know how it smokes and enjoy.Thanks. Dr. Hardy pipes used to be seconds for the Lorenzo factory. Apparently they stopped making Dr. Hardys in the mid-1990s from what I've read.
The leather- and pigskin-clad look was a fad in the 1960s and 1970s, but I'd be surprised if this one were that old. Most of those were brown-leather wrapped and usually made in France. I've never cared much for the brown leather wrapped ones, but this one is black and unlike any pipe I've ever seen. I was looking for a meerschaum-lined pipe and this was one of the least expensive new ones on ebay (the estate ones looked terrible).
I'm not even entirely sure if the wood is briar since the seller didn't describe it very thoroughly. Will have to see what it's like when it arrives.

The rest of the lot is, literally, garbage but the Fitsall Reamer is an item has great meaning to me. I looked for one for so long that finally just stopped looking until last week when a kind gent pointed me towards this one on eBay..
I signed onto Puff forum in 2009 but I didn't stay long. When I returned in 2014 my first post was to ask if anyone knew where I could get one of these reamers and though no one knew anything about them, I did hang around long enough to meet Branzig and freestoke and I feel fortunate to have stayed to meet the rest of the good folks, now here on Cigar Bum.
Happens to be the best reamer I ever used and I've probably reamed over 1,000 pipes with one. I had two of them (if it's good - do it twice) but my former partner made off with them (that's the least of what he made off with) but it's like getting a little piece of myself back.
So I've come full circle here on Cigar Bum. Brandon, this is what I was looking for.

I don't have it yet, just shipped.
This is what the listing said.
It comes with 4 pipes the first says "Made in England", the second "Selected Imported Briar" the third "Made in London England" and the last is a "Kaywoodie Standard #01". I'm not sure of the brands of the first three, I know sometimes the words get worn off over the years, but they are in very good shape overall.

From a little "rootin' around" I think the Kaywoodie is probably from the 1940s-maybe 50s, base on the following statements:
Until late 1930's pipes were stamped with a 4 digit code. Later Kaywoodie will cancel the 2 first style/finish numbers keeping the 2 last shape numbers and the letter for variants.
Up until the late 1940's/early 50's, the logo was on top of the stem. After that the logo was moved to the side of the stem (exceptions exist).
(It could be as early as the late 30s, from some old ads I've seen.)

That's why I think ebay is the wild west of commerce. You're never 100% sure what you're going to get. And when you do get it, the numbskull may of shipped it in an envelope.
My favorite is one time I won an item at an outstanding, deal of century price. I paid and waited weeks for my item to show up. The seller later "regretted to inform me that the item I had won, had gone missing and was possible stolen. I regret telling you that I'll have to give you a refund."
Months later, low and behold, a very similar item showed up on ebay under his seller name. With a reserve of course.

I've had this happen, it sucks, and I ALWAYS call the seller out on it and ask a friend to send a message or two as well. At least they need to be embarrassed. I'm bidding on a pipe (I know that I promised no more PAD but that promise was made in NY and this seller is in Texas), that was listed and sold a few weeks ago. When I contacted the seller he quickly replied that the buyer thought that it was a pre-transition Barlng (what else do I bid on) and that means that the buyer was a dweeb.

I recently bought a Family Era Barling (duh) Quaint with a RegNo on the stem. When it arrived the stem was broken despite the fact that the seller tried to pack it well (but the stem was under pressure). The seller was easy to work with and I hope that yours (seller is as ethical.

Paid too much for it, but I was buying the nostalgia, not the pipe. As a young man living in Maine, before LL Bean reinvented itself as a urban hipster's clothing boutique, I spent many hours browsing the high end fishing gear and drooling over the natural wood Old Town canoes that I would never be able to own. I remember the creaky wooden floors and the aroma of pipe smoke and the stories and advice the salesmen would offer as they puffed on something aromatic. I would dream of piloting one of those beautiful canoes around Moosehead Lake and catching trout with one of the hand made fly rods that were displayed there, before leaving with my purchase of Eagle Claw hooks and a bottle of mosquito repellent.

I used to have an L.L. Bean pipe. If I'm not mistaken, it is made like a Smokemaster pipe where you can use a pipe cleaner for a filter. Is yours like that? They still carried them in the early nineties, but they didn't put them in the catalogs. You had to call them and ask for the pipes.

I haven't received the pipe yet, but I'll let you know when I get it. I've heard of those that use the pipe cleaner and this could very well be one as the metal tube in the stem looks to be offset. But, never having seen one, that's just a guess.

Very important pipe to me, Ser Jacopo Renaissance #313, 1985.
I created the Renaissance series in 1984 and only about 20 were ever made. This is my fourth and I hated this stem when it arrived but it looks fine (to me) now.

Either I misunderstand your post entirely, or you misunderstand what the newbie sampler trade is all about. It's not newbies swapping "dime store tobaccos" back and forth. A new pipe smoker is paired with a experienced one. It's also not free. The new pipe smoker sends a tin of tobacco to the experienced one, and in return receives a number of samples of quality tobacco to try. If you read the entire thread, I think you'll find it's just what you are looking for. I've participated in a number of these and though I always include a sample of Carter Hall, I don't think you could classify any of the other samples I send as "dime store tobacco". Give it a try.

I'll get around to that thread..but right now I need some tobacco, an I simply thought maybe you guys..who I consider experts here would be able to let me try a sampler(pinch) of what I see you posting, I didnt ask for free.....to me it would be something special...I looked on line at tobaccos last night an if I bought from what I read I would have spent a few hundred dollars last night.....BUT a BUM is helping me out an for that I am very grateful...its probably his advice which is going to shape my experience in pipe smokin....maybe this is a little testie to some, but at 73 I dont have time to play around..now I got to check with a rope maker here an see if he is willin to let me try that lushis rope we talked about....

Lynn , my suggestion of Carter Hall was to temper your new pipe, build a cake in it. Not trying to start you off cheap. Your pipe is kind of like a new car, put a few miles in getting to know it and learn it's quirks before you start road racing.

Sir. I beg you to try the new guy trade. I traded with a fellow named Warren. He saved me six month of messing around buying the wrong stuff. He traded me a simple book that explained everything about pipe smoking. He set me up with some cobs (they smoke cool), cleaners and tobaccos. Everyday Tobacco and really special ones. All for a can of tobacco sent right to him from the company. I'm too old to waste time making mistakes, I want to enjoy this past time from the start. Either way, hope you enjoy your time here.

@Lynn (http://www.cigarbum.com/forum/member.php?u=361) congrats on the pipe. What's this about the sister? Did I miss something?
I wanted the Jacopo Renaissance series to have hand-cut rod vulcanite (black) stems but I acceded and we went with hand-cut black lucite bits. When this pipe arrived, with a white stem, I had a minor canary - completely out of context, (can't redo the stem without shaving the shank).
From the same seller as the Renaissance I bought this pipe, that may prove interesting, but I'm not likely to smoke it.

@MisterMoo might be able to give you some info on the Kaywoodie.
The Kaywoodie is coming along nicely. It needs a little more fine sanding on the stem. I left the burn mark on the rim; not sure if I want to sand that much away.

It is just slight, but it has definitely burned away a small bit of the front inner rim. I'm not too worried about it. It is a really old pipe, and it is turnout out to be really nice.
Is it preferable to leave a little bit of the discoloration of the stem, or better to take it all the way down to black? I'd rather not take off too much, if that would end up hurting the "value" of the pipe (I know it isn't worth too much, but I want to know the right way to do it).

Hi Bryan,
You have the right attitude, treat every pipe as if it has value because certainly they do to you.
Examine the pipe and see what you can do and know what you can't do (like tenons). I try to take off all the oxidation except on the barrel of the stem and the nomenclature where I do what I can without risking rounding or mismatching stem/shank or removing the logo. If the stem looks pretty beat up then it's better to err on the side of caution.
Never go below indents that are moderate or deeper else you risk the integrity of the stem. When the stem allows you can often shape the button and bite to your preference when you're removing oxidation. If you're unsure, always use a higher grit (finer) because you can always use a heavier grit to remove surface but you can't put it back.
I use (think I mentioned this) padded finger nail files for lower grits and then micro mesh pads and these 3M Zona papers (price just dropped)
http://www.amazon.com/Zona-37-948-Polishing-11-Inch-Assortment/dp/B001BHGC7G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431461266&sr=8-1&keywords=zona+3m
The Zona <5 grits (finest 2-3 papers) are great for the surface of the bowl as well as the fine polish. Give a shout if you have questions.
Regards,
Pete

That Bro, is a honest to goodness wind cap.Used to keep the ember protected from wind and rain, and keeps sparks from escaping.
I had a Swiss pipe that had one and it disappeared awhile back, I've been looking for this style cap for about 5 yrs, finally my search ends.

I've been looking to add another Giancarlo Guidi made Mastro de Paja (1972 to early 1982) for some time. This is a 1979, with the old logo (Mastro de Paja in block letters inside an elipse) and during Giancarlo's era they were usually (always?) marked with the year of manufacture. Before 1975 the quality could be inconsistent but by the time that this pipe was made they were the virtual equivalent of the early Ser Jacopo (silver around coral logo) pipes.
Pretty radical bent (for me :) ) but a nice bowl, good size and looks to be in great shape. $49.99 but shipping (from Italy) was $17.00.

Bull Moose and Bull Cap are (classically) straight pipes. The Moose is heavier and usually a taller bowl. The Rhodesian is similar to a Bent Bulldog but it has a rounded bottom (as in this pipe). The straight counterpart to this pipe, properly, would be a Bull Moose. I don't know that anyone would mind if you called this a Bent Bull Moose.

I was slumming for values and got nipped at the wire on several pipes, only buying this one for $16.85 ($10.50 + $5.35 ship) but regret being the under bidder on a 1930s KBB Paragon billiard that looked the part (and I would have smoked it) that went for $20.52 (total).
I believe that this pipe is a Charatan handmade 2nd because of the flat bottom of the tobacco chamber (made by a lathe), wall thickness, shape and grain. Very Charatan in shape as well. I have a fuzzy memory that Herman Lane told me that his retail store was called Tobacco Lane and that dovetails perfectly although the pipe doesn't look 60 years old and I'd want confirmation on the name to make that claim.

I was very happy for you when I saw the pictures. Then I saw the final price and pure envy took over. Damn.
Hi Mark,
Good to see ya.
It's not a Matzhold and I bid on it accordingly but I liked the work, very meer in it's smooth lines and that's hard to do in briar.
I like to have a plan for my pipe purchases but I don't with this one. Its big and I've got some ideas but no plan.
The Tobacco Lane arrived and it's a handmade Charatan 2nd but some ninny extruded the tenon (slightly) so that it's a loose fit and I don't mess with tenons.

Bought this 100gr tin of Murrays Erinmore Mixture ($12.00 shipped). Contents are dry so it'll need a year or more in the hopper.
Made in Northern Ireland (Murrays) but 100gr (instead of 4oz) so it would appear to be a later original but I'm not sure of the year.

Stopped in a local antique store today to just see if they had any old cobs for cheap. The only 2 pipes they had were these two briar's. Bought the pair for $7.50. I don't know anything about them. One says Varsity briar on the bottom of the bowl and the other says BER-Briar on it.

I bought this pipe on Ebay several months ago and it was in rough condition. It's a Savinelli Punto Oro and it was all scuffed up and downright ugly then. Later, when on a completely different Ebay listing, I noticed in the description that the seller (knobby1041) offered to refurbish pipes and he offered to do the first one for free. After some research, he is a very well respected pipe maker, Bobby Owens. I took him up on the offer and sent this pipe to him and he made it look great. So I'm going to send him some more pipes in the future. His website is: http://www.bobbyowenspipes.com/

I picked up this GBD Clubhouse 269 for $12 on a whim. I was taken with the diamond shank and chair leg stem and dammit, I wanted this pipe. When I inspected it I discovered the shank was plugged and the bowl and finish was hurtin'. It was represented honestly enough and the price was right; I just wasn't prepared for the reality of the situation. It was just close enough to disposable to encourage me to risk screwing it up with my first restoration.

Hi Jim,

I'm most impressed with the way that you handled the bowl rim. You restored it without compromising it, very nice job. Glad that it smokes well.

I promised a friend that I'd re-evaluate McClellands so I bought tins or 1oz samples of their #2010, Tawny Flake and Black Woods along with Orlik Golden Sliced, and Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Mixture (and some pipe cleaners), all before the current P&C 48-hour 15% sale (site-wide) that's a good vehicle to buy some McClelland tins.
I'll also be buying a cobb, first one in many years, as part of my 'Perestroika', a bit like if Mao buying a McDonalds franchise to stick his toe in to Capitalism.

Purports to come with original contents - we'll see; I was mainly interested in the tin as it appears to be in pretty close to mint condition.
Can anyone hazard a guess as to how old this might be? A slightly older BOTL co-worker says he remembers Velvet coming in tins well into the 70's but couldn't remember when they switched to plastic.

Went to the Gatlinburlier on Friday. I had picked this one out on the Pipes web cam but I couldn't get the website to work right. We parked at the Gatlinburg Visitors Center Park and Ride parking lot and rode the trolley into town. It's a lot less hassle than looking and paying for parking in town. They were closed the first time we went by so we walked to the other end of the strip and had breakfast. When I got back to the Gatlinburlier, the customer service was impeccable; I was given expert advice and 100% attention. In particular, I was hoping that the house pipes were stamped Gatlinburlier so that I would have it as a souvenir. The manager found a few stamped ones but not anything I was interested in, so I decided to buy this pipe which is a H.I.S. pipe. Also got the 8 oz. sampler of Cades Cove Cavendish, Mellow Moonshine, Mountain Mall Mix, and Newfound Blend. When you buy this combo, they also give you a Czech tool, a pipe cleaner holder full of pipe cleaners, and some matches. I've been wanting to try out some of their pipe tobaccos; they have high ratings on Tobaccoreviews.com.

Is there a thread giving pointers on what to look for when buying a pipe, especially a used pipe? I couldn't find one. If it's here, I'd love to know where. If not, there are a lot of experienced pipers here that have a wealth of knowledge. Very interested in seeing a thread on this, whether an old thread or a new one.

Just received this damaged pipe with bowl nomenclature virtually all buffed off. Certainly the smoker before me loved it based on the use and bowl cake. It reamed close to circular and is clean (no fills) with nice flame grain and it was handmade. Rim is beat to hell and the shank was repaired but it's surprising that a handmade pipe with a 1920-30 style Four Dot stem received only my $5.00 bid (+$5.95 shipping).
I took off the wax finish, cleaned the nomenclature area, put on some carbon and was able to make out the tail of the old fishtail logo and part of the 'S' from Sasieni. It would appear that that it's a beat up, small and odd shaped 1920s Sasieni. Always wanted to try one of their really early pipes.

I find that small, thinner walled smooths are best with latakia mixtures. If I smoked inside I'd try it with some straight Virginia flake but that's another day.
I've smoked two bowls in this little guy and the stem is a problem, small width, that I can't get good purchase on. The bowl reams circular but in the phrasing phase it was angled to make the oval but I left the extra cake there.
I smoked it with Balkan Sasieni (how could I not) and Dunhill Mixture #965. Other than the difficulty with the bit it performed admirably with no ghosting and really crisp, clean flavors, exceptionally so and it smoked long and cool. Without question the ugliest pipe I own but my single criterion is how well a pipe smokes and if I can get used to the mouth feel it will get it's share of smokes.
About to fire up the Mastro de Paja for the first time that I bought a few weeks ago.

Another 10 pipe grab bag of seconds from MM. It's my consolation prize after being outbid at the last second on Ebay for a pipe I really wanted.

If you don't mind, please post what was in it. I understand every bag is different. Been thinking about one but haven't pulled the trigger.

Just ordered it today. I'll post the contents as soon as it comes in. This will be my 4th and I've been happy with all of them so far.

Nothing big.
Just 1 tin of Full Virginia Flake, 1 tin of Escudo and 2 oz of bulk Nightcap.
I have some other things on my list to try, but a little at a time for now. :pipe:

Cobs just came in, here's what I received:
2 Mizzou straight stem
6 Legends, 4 straight, 2 bent
1 General, bent stem
1 Cobbit bowl with a standard black bent stem, (not churchwarden)
One of the bent legends has a good size divot taken out of the top of the bowl, but still useable. Some have very minor flaws, none of them structural in nature. Some look nearly perfect. The General, in particular, appears to be flawless. Once again, money well spent.
