Well it is official, the rumors have been true all along. Samuel Gawith and Gawith Hoggarth & Co will be merging back together after 150 years. I remember hearing these rumors about a month ago and thought they were just rumors, but evidence dropped for sure yesterday.
The official release states:
After months of deliberation and negotiation I am pleased to advise that the House of Samuel Gawith and Gawith Hoggarth will merge on March 18th.
The men and machinery of SG will move to the larger and more adequate factory of GH. The men will be the same as will the machinery. The brand will be made in exactly the same way as it has been since 1792 with no change to blend, water or branding.
We see this move as a good move particularly in view of the fact that exactly 150 years ago, in 1865, the two brothers, Samuel and John shook hands and went their separate ways to pursue their own dreams in Kendal. Both SG and GH have co-existed in a peaceful, friendly but competitive way to this day.
From the article I read, it seems like the SG factory is going to become a snuff museum and all of the SG machinery will be taken too the GH&Co factory and SG blends will be produced there. No lay offs or anything like that, just GH&Co have a lot more room in their facilities and SG needs more room to operate.
Kinda cool to have the families working side by side again. That is as long as the GH&Co guys don't borrow any of the SG's guys machinery....they'll get Lakeland snot all over things and our beloved FVF or Best Brown will suddenly have an essence too it! :p
The article insists nothing will change product wise, everything will be produced and taste the same. Guess we will find out!

Amen to that!
Either of these two companies merging with any other company would worry me, but this causes no worry at all.

Ewww, the idea of my beloved FVF getting corrupted by G&H sauce is frightening. :p Both produce some of the finest tobaccos in the world, and I am sure nothing will change on that end.

I agree. These two houses have been blending tobacco for so long and are a established, I see no problem with it. The brothers are back together. Just took 150 years [emoji14]

They both use old style production and the quality of their leaf is what sets the standard to me. No other manufacturer uses higher quality Virginia IMO.
I highly doubt SG allows Hoggarth snot on any of their blends....but I have been known to mix some Kendal flake or Grousemoor with my FVF before....don't know it till you try it ;)

I can see it now...Samuel Hoggarth & Co. "Where everything tastes like your grandma's couch"
Wonder if this merger will affect their prices at all...this reminds me, I'm fresh out of Ennerdale, FVF, and St. James...

I just read this and thought you typed 'grandma's crotch'
Branzig There you go with the lakeland thing again. :D
Actually I almost envy you guys who enjoy that lakeland dressing. GH&Co certainly make some quality, dry smoking, clean burning aromatics. If I didn't hate the taste I'd smoke them all the time :pipe:

One could only wish!!!! What an amazing essence that would be! [emoji14]
Have you tried any of the lighter lakeland offerings? Most people can't even taste the essence in SG Kendal cream flake...and it's real good stuff. Not much floral at all. More tonquin bean and sweet notes.

I've tried bob's chocolate flake if that's what you mean :p I didn't like that at all until a year of neglect rendered the lakeland scent all but totally undetectable. I also tried rum flake but all I taste in that one is old lady's hats. Haven't tried Kendal cream, no. Is that lighter scented than he rum flake?
I've been going with 1792 for my tonquin notes

I've never smoked chocolate flake before...I know blasphemy for a gawith fan. but I'd venture to say even without smoking it, that Kendal cream is a lot lighter on the sauce. It's 90% Virginia/Burley I would say with some nice topping. I'd send you some if I hadn't smoked my last tin of it already....maybe on my next order I'll make you a lake snot sampler of lighter stuff lol.
That would be Mixture 79...
Hey now! I think that is disrespectful to grandmother's crotches!
I'm sure grandma's crotch tastes better than No. 79....hahahaha

this concerns me a little re. SG Va's as even the unscented GH tobaccos seem to get tainted by the perfume in the factory
as someone said, this is the only merger that could happen between the two that won't wreck the legacy
as long as BBF and Kendal Dark remain unchanged I'll be happy

I think they are more so tainted by the fact that GH&Co use the same cutting machines and presses for everything almost, whether they be scented or not.
The article I read more or less guarantees that each company will use their own respective equipment, so I doubt anything SG will suddenly have that delicious geranium snot all over it.
On a side note, could you guys imagine what it must smell like in that factory?! Like the biggest garden you have ever been in on steroids that has been doused in Dial soap :p

Yippee! My 2 favorite tobacco blenders all in one place now....life is good. And there is nothing wrong with Lakeland blends. One of my favorites is Ennerdale. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.....:)

Personally, I think this is awesome! Much better than someone as storied as either company being bought out by an Altadis or the likes. (not that I don't smoke plenty of Altadis brands, mind you.)
