View Full Version : Piper Roll Call

Rorick

New piper or old, introduce yourself here and let the rest of us know who you are.

I'm Rorick. I'm new overall to bot sides of the community. I was originally a stoogie smoker, but the cold winds of winter proved to harsh for me to endure. I learned that a pipe might be a good hold over from the friendly faces at Puff, and boy were they right. I'm still rather limited on my pallet. To date my favorite 'baccy is Price Albert soft vanilla in a classic cob.

Now let's hear about you!

Don, started pipes a long time ago. Not a regular smoker but do puff away couple times a week. I've stashed enough tobacco to last me a long time
at least.

Tim, I've got a very small cellar and still smoke far more cigars than pipes so I'm more a lurker on this side of the house. I smoke the pipe once a week or so, and at that rate even my little stash will last a couple years.

Jack, been piping almost a year and have a bowl or three a day. My cellar is by no means huge but is slowly growing.

I have a 100+ pound cellar (lifetime at my age and smoking rate) of mostly straight Va's and VaOr blends put away. Enough poundage of Burley for my morning coffee smoke, and maybe 15 pounds of Lat blends, which I rarely touch.

I collect Haymarket era Loewes, and I like to think I have one of the world's nicest small collections of that marque. I bought all but two of them unsmoked.

I also collect Dunhill. After those two, there are a small collection of Comoy's, Charatan, Orlik and Sasieni with them on the rack. There is a micro collection of Russian artists on the bottom row, and I am a big fan of Alexander Ponomarchuk and Andrey Grigoriev. The collection is two pipes away from being finished, so I won't be able to indulge my fondness of Russian pipes more than I have. I set a limit for myself with my collection, because pipe collecting without a focus, for someone like me, runs out of control. Nobody needs hundreds of pipes. I stopped at 60, eventually trimmed down to 40, and there were hundreds of pipes leading up to those 40 keepers. There is not a pipe on my rack that I would part with.

Tobias- I've been piping for about 15 years and consider it my primary tobacco hobby. I smoke from a rotation of ~45 pipes, about 8 of which are cobs with Forever stems. My cellar is around 130lbs now and represents most everything (but not many Lakelands). About a year ago I bought my first whole leaf and began topping, blending, and mainly flake making. I don't consider myself to be much of a pipe snob...I love Dr. Grabows, Velvet, and mainly use a Zippo pipe lighter. However I do have some more expensive pipes and I partake in the Esoterica craze now and again ;)

Tony - I started piping in college in the mid 90's. After a few years I put it down for a while in favor of clip and light rolled up tobacco logs that you keep in a humidor. I started piping again probably 8 years ago now. My pipe collection isn't huge maybe 14 total pipes and probably in the 10 pound range of tobacco in my cellar. My pipes include Savinelli, Peterson, Orlik, Dunhill and a few cobs with forever stems. I do have one special cob called General Cobwarden which is a MM general with the longest possible curchwarden forever stem. I smoke a bit of everything and don't discriminate against tobacco types. I appreciate Aros as much as English. My regular rotation usually includes: FVF, 1Q, OGS, any of the FM's, EMP or 965, Stonehaven or Penzance and the Prince. I use two lighters: a black zippo pipe for outside and a Jifeng corona old boy knock-off everywhere else.

Real name is Warren. Long time Puff member, (since 2009), though not very active the last couple years. I have more pipes and tobacco than I need, though still not as much as I want. There is no cure for PAD and TAD, once stricken, the condition is permanent.

I took the board change thing as an excuse to change my user name to my 'general online name' rather than my actual name. Love Italian pipes, HOTW and Hamborger Veermaster. And still listen to Iron Butterfly. Sorry; I'm not going to say who I was; I'm still in contest mode! :D

My name is Brent. I used to go by AuburnGuy. I am new to pipes, but thanks to Tobias doing a cob split, I am now sliding deeper and deeper into this side of the leaf. I have maybe a pound in my cellar, and I am still trying to find my wheelhouse. I have 5 pipes, but nothing super nice yet. I have restored one estate and wanting to do more. I am very new and will ask Noob questions. I have been on puff for the past 6 months.

I am Emperor Zurg. I rule the galaxy with an iron fist. I enjoy crushing my enemies and driving them before me like vermin.

I sent an email to neverbend and I believe I also have PMR1010's addy at work. (I think that was his handle anyway.) We should make a list of missing members and who has their contact info. Come to think of it, I also have branzig's email somewhere.

Bruck
02-08-2015, 06:53 PM
Bruck here, another Puff refugee reporting for duty. Real name = Bruce.

I'm about 50/50 cigars vs. pipe smoking these days. I smoke mostly cobs but also have a couple of meers and Dr. Gs. I mainly smoke home-made flake (I have a hydraulic press for this - some of you guys might remember the tobacco press pron I used to post on Puff). For commercial tobacco, I dig VAs and English blends mainly. Not a fan of the sweet stuff.

My tobacco stash is mostly whole leaves, but I also have a couple pounds total of ready-to-smoke tobaccos. Not a big stash but I'm trying to keep it that way.

Hey guys and gals.
Paul from Arkansas here. I had just gotten involved on the pipe side when Puff went down. Glad we're getting things started back up here and I have some experienced brains to glean knowledge from.

I will say, in the short few weeks I've been experimenting with the pipe, my humidor has been rather neglected. :)

Hey all Blake here, your northern neighbor. I'm still fairly new to cigars but have recently decided if I want to smoke at all in the winter time a pipe is about the only way I'm getting outside to do it. So with that I have my first pipe and collection of random samples on their way from smoking pipes as we speak. Looking forward to diving into this side of the lifestyle with you all.

Hiya Kids!

Good Ol' Emperor Zurg was out pummeling his way through my home planet and I overheard him saying something about Cigarbums, so after he destroyed my home I decided I better come check this place out!

My name is Brandon, and I have been known to smoke a pipe or 3 or 10 from time to time. I have been smoking tobacco for 15 years and the pipe has been my main tool of delivery for the past 7ish. I am a sucker for vintage American pipes and love restoring them and smoking them. I also commonly fall to the dreaded PAD and TAD. I am sure some ex-Puffers here will remember me!

I am also a sucker for making bad decisions! Like this one last night!

I ended up at a sketchy house party, the Storm Front was great! The 40....was great at the time....I have an 11 o'clock tee time so this stuff better wear off quick haha

Hiya Kids!

Hey, ya made it! :)

I've been searching the caches of various search engines to see what can be salvaged from the wreck of Puff. Much of it seems gone already :(
FYI the text of your estate pipe restoration thread is still in the yahoo cache. If you want it you'd better be quick, it's already lost in Google as far as I can tell.

Only have a 1.5 Oz tin midnight ride referee from Branzig and a a sampler from tmoran from a noon trade. Working through that stuff now. Never canned anything in life so don't want to get to much, my tin is already drying out.

Jon here, I've been at it 3 or 4 years now. I have a handful of pipes and have sold many more (a few to MarkC and possibly Tobias). I'm not sure MarkC is here but it's good see Tobias! My cellar is small as I only have 1 or 2 bowls a week now. I have perhaps a pound of baccy, mostly Dunhill Flake but with a few other blends to keep things interesting.

Name's Brad, some of you might know me from the cigar forums. I'm not real big into pipes but I do have a single corn cob (Missouri Meerschaum) that I bought over a year ago and 1 single ounce of aromatic (is that right?) tobacco that's supposed to smell like pina colada. I just bought the tobacco though, don't freak out, it's not a year old. I got the pipe because when it's cold out a pipe is much cheaper than a cigar, and I like the smell.

Just from reading this roll call, I can tell I know very little about the pipe world.

Name's Collin. I started piping back in college because I loved the aroma. About 2 years ago I busted out the old pipes and got back into the hobby. Mainly a winter piper and a summer cigar guy (Indiana winters and all). I rotate 8 pipes, but smoke mostly VA and Latakia blends. I have approximately 60 different jarred tobaccos now -- thanks 75% in part to generous Puffers -- but have no idea how much that adds up to!

Also... I took part in the blind taste test that Tobias led at the end of last year... I am a pipe dunce no matter which way you cut it :p

Thank God that thread is gone!

My name is Rich and I started smoking a pipe last September. Been smoking cigars for the last 8 years but I slow down in the winter. The pipe has been a fantastic replacement. I enjoy English and Vaper blends. Actually so far I've enjoyed everything I've tried so I feel lucky. Thank you for having me.

Andrew is my name and I know some of you from elsewhere. From NY but living in Japan. Smoked a pipe in college for about two years (about 9 years ago). Started smoking a pipe back in 2013 and have been doing so ever since. My favorite blends are typically based with Virginia or Burley. I have a decent collection of briars, some meers and a few mortas. Looking forward to getting to know you all (some again)

Real name is John but people call me Tab. I'm a Puff refugee.
Started my first pipe collection in 1972. What got my attention was a visit to the Tinder Box at a local mall. It opened up my eyes to another world of pipes and tobaccos that I hadn't known existed.

Finally made it out of the Puff wreck. I'm Rick from South Africa aka Bleskop, which is the Afrikaans language word for bold head. My last topic posted on the previous forum was "I envy you guys abroad". As some of you know I'm still new to pipe smoking but a lot happened in these few days of silence between forum jumping. I got my hands on a few tins and even a new pipe. It is nice to see some familiar faces again. My compliments to the person/s who started this forum as I was a bit lost without the chit chat with people who share the same passion.

I'm Joshua from St Louis. VERY new to pipes (I know what aromatic tobacco is, and that's about it).

My first pipe (a MM cob) should be waiting in my mailbox today, along with the SmokingPipes starter pack (a czech tool, a few unnamed samples, a cheap plastic pipe, a stand, and a pipe/tobacco case). Also got some Low Country Cooper, Low Country Santee, and some Frog Morton's Cellar. Hopefully none of those suck too bad.

Since I'm clueless about everything from variations in tobacco to cellaring practices to proper packing, I'm sure I'll be relying on you all a lot, and thanks in advance for the advice!

I'm Paul from Long Island and I'm fairly new to pipes. I am learning and with the help of a few good people on this site and others I'm trying to pick it up.

I was gifted a briar and I've picked up several Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cobs which I absolutely love. I have a few tins of different blends and have figured out that the same blend doesn't taste the same in every pipe. I'm cataloging which do though so that I can revisit certain ones.

I'll be keeping up hopefully with this site and trying to gain as much knowledge as possible here.

My name is Ken. Piper for about 10 years. More tobac than I can smoke in my lifetime. I enjoy a couple cigars weekly. Prolly about 20 bowls weekly with the pipe. I smoke cobs with burley and briar for Va stuff. Got a nice Bekler Meer for lat stuff. Lat kicks ass in a meer. Favorite tobacco...John Pattons Storm Front in a MM Freehand.

Bryan here.

Started piping about 4 or 5 years ago, with an eBay pipe and a couple ounces from the jars at my local cigar shop. I piddled around with that until about September 2014, at which I started into cigars and also learned about "real" pipe tobacco. (Praise God!)

I now try to squirrel away a couple tins per month, family and finances allowing.

I love this hobby, and have met nothing but great people doing this!

P.S. Also a Puff refugee. I think I saw the same post by Jiminks that Roy saw.

Have I been here before? Tonight my wife said "you have an email from Tiberius Lutz." I joined Puff about a year ago to learn about cigars. Then I bought a few pipes and dug out a few old pipes. Got in some splits, mostly with Tobias, tried the Ennerdale Flake, and The Blind Taste Challenge. I might smoke 2 or 3 sticks a week but started carrying a pipe in the work van everyday. Went from a pack a day to about two packs a week. Never did like my old tag "gtechva" so I switched it up. My name is George, old friends and family call me G.W. so as not to confuse me with my dad (my avatar).

And I ramble sometimes.

Chaz here, new to the Bum. Been smoking cigars over 20yrs. Picked up a cob about a year ago. Whenever I have a short time to smoke then out comes the pipe. Seems like this winter I've really enjoyed smoking the pipe more.
Have several MM cobbs and been trying a variety of tobacco. Some blends that seem to hit the spot include, McClelland Red Cake, Peter St. Lux. Bulleyes flake, Peterson Special Reserve 2014. Have not started a cellar yet, just smoke through what I have then try something new. Looking to learn a few things from the old timers.
Thanks

Rob here, I made it over from Puff. Initially I was a cigar guy but have been getting more into pipes. Lately its only been pipes. I will say I enjoy making pipes as much as I like smoking them. @ cakeanddottle I have not got to the point that I am trying to cull the herd. My main focus is on Pete's, Upshalls, Kaywoodies, Stanwell and Savinellis. But any bamboo, Rhodesian, Bulldog, Dublin or Canadian is fair game and I love the Savinelli 316 and Stanwell 217. With tobaccos I am more of an aro guy, love Lane 1Q, luxury navy flakes and SG FVF.

C.P. McDill here, known on the late Puff forum by the same handle. I am so glad to see so many familiar names over here, as I was worried that the community was "lost in time, like tears… in... rain" -- the prospects are looking good to get the old dynamic up and running quickly.

Thrilled to see so many friends and pipe heroes reporting in. It is pity that certain useful threads were lost on pipe restoration/maintenance, but maybe it's a blessing in disguise, as those of us who embrace this hobby will have gained in experience and wisdom, and we can update our insights and advice. Sometimes the "weight of the past" may make us less likely to post something new, because we feel it's already been written, and newbies can just use the search function. It's a fresh opportunity to re-examine our knowledge.

Chris - I'm a refugee from Puff.com. Glad to be here! I started smoking pipes while I was in Afghanistan. It was a way for me to calm down and chill out after/during a rough day. Since then it's helped me stay off those nasty drugs the VA is so fond of pushing on us veterans. I don't smoke a lot, maybe a couple bowls a week. But my vitamin N intake has increased slightly since I went back to college. For some reason smoking a pipe helps me concentrate on studying. If I'm smoking inside I usually use a match, but I have a pipe zippo that I was gifted a while back that I use when I'm out and about. My cellar is not so small, not so big and very varied. I probably have a little bit of everything. Not sure what you call it but I prefer tobaccos that have a woody, smokey flavor. There are a few select aros that I enjoy (H&H Egg Nog is NOT among those) but overall I like the more natural flavor of non-aros.

For a while I was smoking more, to make up for the lack of my virtual puffing, then I actually started to get more work done around the house, my iPad stayed charged longer, I went to bed earlier, etc. Now back to ruination...

Glad to see familiar names here.

Thanks for your service. Wouldn't it piss off a bunch of people if they had to prescribe/suggest tobacco?

Done cigars for a long while, maybe soon to the pipe side, but do enjoy the stick.

I'm Russ Ouellette, and I've been a pipe smoker for right around 40 years. I'm the blender of the Hearth & Home brand pipe tobaccos, so I smoke a wide variety of blends. If anyone wants to ask a question about Hearth & Home, you can message me here or email me at [email protected].

I'm Pete Siegel, a bit late to the party here at CigarBum but glad to be back. I've been on pipe forums going back to Alt/Smoking/pipes in the late 1980s and many other forums but none has a better membership that we have here. I'm sure it's mutual but I enjoy you folks and your passion and respect for smoking and each other (steps off the soap box).

I started working in a smoke shop 50 years ago and smoked my first pipe within a year (I was 11 :) ). Long history with pipes and cigars. I've always preferred pipes but cigars were easier on the move. I left the pipe business in the early 1990s and and became a database programming consultant and I retired in 2011. I've lived in Huntington, NY (Long Island) since 1989. I have recently admitted that I have both PAD and TAD. I am fortunate that my wife is an enabler. You guys understand.

Rob here, I made it over from Puff....My main focus is on Pete's, Upshalls,...

Rob,

I have a deep interest in James Upshall.

Hi all, I'm Joe. Relative noob to pipe smoking. I have a small meer and a savinelli bent bulldog. I have only sampled a few tobaccos with my favorite being the Dunhill nightcap so far. Looking to learn more from everyone here!

Welcome to the forums, Joe! Nightcap was one of the first two tins I ever bought when I got started. Dunhill EMP was the other one :pipe:

I have a decent collection of Peterson pipes ,MM cobs, Clays and Meers , I love flakes and plug tobacco . I'm addicted to smokeless tobacco, Chew, Snus,Dip, Malka and Twists, I am also a Snuff fiend, I do enjoy the occasional cigar when I can get them. And I sometimes start my day with Dokha to get the Vitamin N flowing.
