View Full Version : I need a good, quality cutter

I've been smoking for a couple years now and to this point have just used the free cutters that came with starter kits and such. I'm thinking I want to invest in a good quality cutter that I will have for a long time. From all accounts a Xikar is what I'm looking for. Is there any significant difference between the Xi1, Xi2 and Xi3 cutters? So far as I can tell it's just a design thing but if anyone has any insight that'd be appreciated.
Anyone have any negative experience with Xikars or have any other suggestions for a cutter? I'm all for the consensus but I like to explore my options. Reccomendations for non-Xikar cutters would be appreciated too.

Xikar or Palio, can't go wrong with either one

Have had great experience with Xikar Cutters. Had an Xi3 (lost in the house fire) and more recently the VX v-cut (lost in the recent move). While we've had lousy luck keeping the dang things, they've been the best cutters we've had and will be replacing the Vcutter if we don't ever find it.

Those are the ones with a backplate so you don't have to set your cutter on a flat surface to get that nice cut right? Do they hold up pretty well? I've used a friend's a couple times (if it's the one I'm thinking of) and I really like the backplate. I just want to get a cutter I can keep for a while.

Here's my review of a Xikar, which I love, but its only for coordinated folks.

I'm a xikar cutter fan (I have 6) and a palio cutter fan but my favorite/most used cutter is the Casseti. Very solid in hand and cuts as well as any cutter I have...and separates from the others in terms of looks.

Is it just a price issue or do you prefer the X8 style over the teardrop Xi? Any differences in the cut or is it mostly a style preference?

Correct. And they have a lifetime warranty, too. I have had one for over two years and it is still sharp.

Oh the lifetime warranty is nice. One of the reasons I was looking at the Xikars, that and the damned near universal praise they receive. I'm gonna have to look closer at the Cuban Crafters it seems.

Yes that's the one. It's idiot proof, which is great for me. And they're built like a tank.

I have a xikar Room 101 edition, a perfect cutter, and a colibri V cut that I used depending on the cigar. Love all 3 but my favorite is probably the xikar

I've owned an Xi1 that I loved and lost, and have a CC Perfect Cutter and a Xikar XV cutter. I think you can't go wrong with any of these. My take though: I'd start with Xikar Xi, your choice of series. It's just the most versatile. Let's say your cigar starts tunneling, and you need to cut an inch off the end. You can't do that with a V cutter or a CC Perfect. I've had problems with the CC Perfect not cutting enough off torpedoes, so I have to cut them again. It's not a deal breaker, but if I know how big I want the opening on a torpedo to be, I can get it with the Xi the first time around. If you're smoking small ring gauge cigars, I think it's harder to control the depth of cut with the V cut or a CC perfect. If you can swing it, save your money and get one of each.

My first Xikar was the teardrop and i was in love with it till i used a friends MTX and fell in love with the multi so much that i traded in my teardrop for the Multi with has been my go to for the last 6 years but i recently bought a X8 for a knock around and boy does it cut butter smooth each and every time.

I'll second praise for the X8, I've been very happy with mine! Also, Xikar offers a leather pouch when you register the product online
Though I offered another option, I cosign any suggestion for a xikar cutter...or a palio cutter...or a CC perfect cutter. Great options out there.

As transparent a tactic as that is it's really tempting. Pouches are cool. Maybe I'll get a CC for everyday use and a fancy Xikar (with pouch!) for when I want to impress tha ladeez.

I guess I'm the odd man out.. the wife bought me this Davidoff cutter when I first got into cigars. At least 25 years ago (she paid $50) and it's still razor Sharpe.

Can't beat it IMO, fancy sheath and all. It even flips over to hold your cigar for you while you smoke!

I'm another Xikar X8 fan. For the price it's hard to beat. I have used several (friends') cutters and I like my Xikar the best, it's still perfect after the 4+ years I've had it. I don't like the cutters with the backplates because I like torpedos and perfectos.

I forgot to subscribe to my own thread so I missed the last bit. Anyway it appears that asking a question here is a dangerous game. Someone thought they'd be funny because I got this in the mail today:

Thank you mystery bomber! This thing is built a lot tougher than I remember so I'm glad I made the choice :P Now I need to get myself a good c-cutter since my straight cutter is taken care of. The last few posts have convinced me to grab a Xikar V-Cutter. And I'm doing it myself this time no funny business >:(

I had a few other cutters before my Cuban Crafters came. Haven't touched the other ones since it got here. The backplate makes cutting so easy.

Another vote for X8. It's quite simple and it works.

I still have to pull the trigger on a fancier v cutter although I do like the cut. I've been too enamored of the Cuban Crafters someone bombed me. It really is very nice. Solid construction, nice sharp blades and the back plate works amazing, even for torpedos and cigars with tails. Thanks again mystery benefactor!
