View Full Version : cigarette smokers in B&Ms

Quite a contentious point I'm sure.
I had a couple of recent experiences which led me to ask this question.
I was in a large local B&M (with a bar) which was pretty packed tbh, almost too many people really (sore throat upon leaving). Even among the thick cigar smoke inside, I could pick out that someone had lit up a cigarette from across the room, I didn't even see them until leaving. No one said anything and it was so busy that I can't say it really affected my enjoyment.
A few days later, in a different establishment downtown in mid afternoon, the place was nearly empty. Just me and about 4 others, again in a large place. A lady came in from the cold, ordered a coffee and proceeded to chain smoke newport menthols. This time is really spoilt the room note, to the point where I tossed my stick early: it just was too distracting.
Their house, their rules, but what are your thought on cigarettes in the B&M?

The cigar lounge I frequent most has a strict no cigarette policy. I've seen someone light up a cig a couple of times and the bartender makes them put it out immediately.

We just got our legal smoking in Cigar shops reinstated this week. Previously, and now as well, cigarette smoking is not allowed in the cigar shops/bars; only cigars or pipes. It does seem odd that in an establishment full of cigar smoke, someone needs to go outside to smoke a cigarette. I do not like the smell of cigarettes, and am glad for this policy. So here, it is not a problem. It is against the law.

I can't stand the smell of cigarette, it should not be allowed in a B&M in my opinion.

The one cigar lounge we have in town that serves alcohol oddly enough has far more cigarette smokers than cigar smokers at any time. I hate it because I think it takes away from the enjoyment of the smells of cigar tobacco.
I also smoke cigarettes, however I cannot stand the smell of them

I was politely asked not to light up a pipe at a cigar lounge recently. Was OK as I smoke cigars to but they were not excited that I was interested in smoking a pipe. That was a surprise to me.

I myself smoke pipes, cigars, and cigarettes, but I can't stand to be in an enclosed smoke filled room at all.The place has to have ventilation. But,see as so many are treated as second class citizens because they smoke cigarettes is insulting enough to me that I will put up with them in the B&M if the owners do.I helped put in a smoking room at a large "Historical"building, and the principle contractor only took on the job if it would be open to all smokers, not just pipers and cigars. So more or less I'm saying that if the proprieters are ok with it .I'll just accept it,if it really bothers me,I can always go outside.

I prefer if people do not smoke cigarettes in the cigar lounge, but the one I frequent the most does allow it. However, the cigarette smokers generally stay at the bar while I sit in the lounge area with the big comfy chairs. Luckily, this particular lounge has an EXCELLENT ventilation system so as long as we are separated by a few feet I can't even smell it.

I don't mind being around someone smoking a handrolled, I don't care for the odor of a Marlboro or Camel when it is burning.

the two shops i go two allow it. the one lounge usually the workers some in in the winter and light one up but stay away from the cigar smokers. the other has 2 full service bar. usually there are afew cig smokes and 9 times out of 10 they have bought more in drinks than the guys who come in w a herfador and are ordering water. why would you turn away a cig smoker if there is a bar and they are buying drinks. how many times do you see ppl walk into a cigar bar with a herfador never buy anything and order water? gotta pay the bills somehow

I don't mind at the only one that serves alcohol. They have a great ventillation system.
Any other lounge in the area has a strict buy here to smoke here policy, so no cigarette smokers allowed as none of them sell cigarettes. So overall not much of an issue.
What I hate is getting the stink eye from cigarette smokers that are outside having a smoke while I take a stroll through the neighborhood with a good cigar. That makes me want to smack someone upside the head.

Our best B&M here in town actually started as a cigarette outlet (hence the name Tobacco Stop) but ventured into cigars about 2 years ago. It really took off and I believe the owner said they make more money on cigars than cigarettes now, even though 1/3 of the store is still dedicated to cigarettes. The employees are usually smoking a cigarette, but to be honest it doesn't bother me much. My clothes smell a little when I leave, but it fades by the end of the day.
If I was in a dedicated cigar B&M (that didn't sell cigarettes) I might be a little more put off by a cigarette. Some are tolerable, some are just horrid.
sometimes when Im around certain types of people smoking cigars..Ill pull out one of my hand rolled cig and light up..usually one of them will say here try this and give me a cigar...I call it social hacking....

Being a former cigarette smoker...I do not want to sound self-righteous but I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke now. It turns my stomach. I don't want to be anywhere near someone who is smoking or has just smoked. With that said, it's a little ironic to not allow cigarette smoking in a cigar bar but then again it's not called a cigarette bar. If you want to smoke your nasty-ass menthols...then go outside lol!!

I figure all smokers are in the same boat so I don't mind if cigarette and pipe smokers smoke in cigar lounges. I don't smoke cigarettes or pipes but I don't find the smell any worse than a cigar burning nearby.
I figure if cigar smokers tolerate cigarette smokers, then hopefully cigarette smokers will be tolerant about cigar smokers. There are lots of places near me that have a smoking area but frown on cigar smoking. It would be nice if everyone could just get along :)
some times when tending bar, I would place a cigar smokers drink to the view of a woman and while he sipped and looked I would replace ashtrays accumulating his cigar to smoke...just a little more social hacking...

I really don't care for the smell of a cig while smoking a cigar as it smells like burning paper. HOWEVER, I feel that we have WAY TOO many laws telling us what we can and can't do these days. If it's allowed, I have no problem with someone exercising their right to smoke what they want.....

I think the problem is also that the establishments let the cigarette smokers smoke inside. If they dont want to, they should just let them know. Also lots of people might not know the etiquette of not smoking cigarettes in a cigar lounge. But if the establishment permits it, then i don't have a problem with it, and if i do, theres always somewhere else to go smoke and spend my money.

Cigarette smoking is illegal indoors where I live, they are working on reinstating cigar smoking in our lounges now. Even before it was illegal though, I didn't care much if someone smoked a cigarette in the lounge or B&M. Tobacco is tobacco.
Now, what REALLY bugs me is when they don't allow pipes.

but at a cigar bar that serves alcohol they are probably spending as much as you if not MORE and keeping the establishment open for you to smoke your cigars in!
I like to sit on a park bench with my old stockin cap and stitched and patched plaid over shirt...I then stare at cigar smokers until they offer me a cigar..I always choke on the first drag and watch them smile, then I get to business and toke that cigar to the cap..

First they came for the Cigarette Smokers, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Cigarette Smoker.
We need to be careful what we bitch about. All of us have a vice someone else doesn't like.

Meh, I'm an ex-cig smoker and I don't usually mind the smell... but if I was in a cigar lounge, it might be a different story. I don't know, as I haven't experienced it yet. Of course, the owners make the rules, and play by them or play elsewhere, but personally I'd think it odd to allow cigs in a cigar bar, especially considering how many "smoking" places don't allow cigars. It makes sense though when there's alcohol involved, or if the ventilation system really is all that and a bag of chips.
As to "they are one of us", I would disagree... I think the two "hobbies", if you can even qualify smoking cigarettes as such, are worlds apart, and the more awareness of this that there is, perhaps the better off cigar smokers may be.
Not trying to strip cig smokers of their rights here, just saying that if it's a cigar bar, I'd expect/hope that I could enjoy my cigars there without other offensive odors being present.
Interested in how this will play out once recreational pot is legalized in more places, as that has an even more pervasive smell when smoked- although I find it to be more pleasant than that of cigs, and simply different than that of cigars.
quick pass that joint before those cig smokers realize we aint cigar smokers..

Far from one of us. this is what the government is going is lumping cigar smokers in with cig smokers. this is why some states have taxes on cigars because the cigars are lumped in with cigs and cig tobaccoo. this is a big reason i like swisher buying out drew estate. they have a huge lobby in the cigar industry and now have a "true" cigar company and can help fight to keep the government from lumping us with cig smokers.

Unfortunately if they sell them, it is at owners discretion to allow. I am an ex? smoker(@work because all 10 minute cigarellos taste like hot garbage) personally I would not want that smell while enjoying my nica puro, but I have never even seen anyone come in looking for cigs.

Now it works.
So as far as smokers in lounges that would completely change the atmosphere.i know NO ONE who smokes out of pleasure. BUT if the owner allows it, nothing to do but avoid the joint.

is that a four letter word, I cant spell it with four letters...

At the local B&M this evening for a Quesada event everybody in the place smoking cigars and a guy walked in with a cigarette lit it. You couldn't tell with all the cigar smoke in the air. But it was posted all over no smoking in regards to cigs.

My favorite B&M allows it. If I had a vote I'd vote against it but I can live with it to get the awesome atmosphere and service they offer.
The other place nearby does not allow it, but that is literally the only thing I like about the place. They're horrifically overpriced and they follow you around in the humidor like they just know you're about to swipe a dozen sticks on your way out. Screw them. I'll deal with the cigarette smoke. There's not that many who do it anyway.

Well, for me it's simple. If you are in a cigar bar, you smoke...mmmm, is this a trick deal or what?...cigars! If it's a 'smoking lounge', well, anything goes. The key is proper notification, thataway, you keep things real. A sign at the entrance which announces "Welcome to Hodad's (whatever) Cigar Lounge. This sign is real and to the point. We welcome cigars...nothing else" or something like that, I can have a lot of fun with the verbiage on a sign!
