View Full Version : My Humidor Project
769770771
always had a 25ct, and a 50ct, so after 60yrs smoking I bought a 400ct box real cheap and started seasoning and remodeling it. needed to remove the heavy cedar smell so I used a coffee vanilla mix to remove the cedar smell and after 2mos it now has a nice coffee aroma. been buying samplers to fill it but as fast as them come I smoke them, but Im gaining slowly. Im going to put a blue LED lighting system in it so the cigar can be seen in a blue haze through the glass. also going to build box racks to replace the flat racks. top right is my resting cigars got 23 days on a couple of them. as I work on this box I will update. any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you are using the foam stick for humidification I suggest switching those out with either Boveda Packs or HF Beads. Much easier to maintain IMO and less likely to grown mold!
have the beads marked for my next cigar order..thanks

It's always a good idea to check the glass on a humidor and if you suspect it leaks a bit, use fume free aquarium sealant and run a bead around the pane on the inside of the lid. It makes a big difference in the winter, especially.

I saw thay humidor on ebay for like $60. Thought about picking it up but assumed it would be a project sealing leaks.

Just a heads up, but if it was a spanish cedar smell it had, thats not a bad thing and is completely normal for humidors to have. If it was me personally, I would not have done the coffee/vanilla mix thing. I'd be too afraid that it would be imparting unwanted aromas into my cigars.
Looking good though. Not sure what you meant by "box racks" but if you mean something like the top tray for storing singles and not boxes, you could also use these trays if they fit. http://www.cheaphumidors.com/other/cedar-trays/cedar-cigar-tray-with-divider.html Or you can just get some empty cigar boxes and fill those up to use as single storage.
If you end up deciding to build more racks or whatnot, be sure to use spanish cedar for it.

cool looking humidor. although all that glass most likely will lead to issues. one of my first humidors was a display type with glass on 4 sides. The damn thing leaked so much air it was basically unusable.
and that is interesting that you prefer coffee smell to the cedar. One of my favorite things about my wineador is that pungent tobacco/cedar aroma when I open it!

the cedar was so over powering, I just needed to adjust it, the cigars are still in the cello will be a month before I can start pulling cello, have to let the coffee aroma die down a bit..Yep I spent $48.00 with free shipping on ebay. checked for leaks first off and resealed the glass, been holding for 2mons between 65-70...I have some Spanish cedar, so Im just going to make sides and dividers using the racks...just couldnt keep those other humidors full since I smoke cigars constantly, so I thought maybe with a bigger one I could start accumulating a stock of cigars...thanks for the looks...

i wouldnt wast the time with led lights. also celo is porous so the cigars can be soaking in the sent of coffee and vinalla and may all become infused over thime
its going to be baby blue lights, and the coffee aroma will be gone in a couple of weeks just to much cedar, I put a cheap cigar in it when I got it and by the next day that cigar was just horrible to smoke, but waste not...I smoked that cigar to the end...at the rate I smoke those cigars have a life of about 9 days...

Well hopefully it turns out ok. Looking forward to seeing some pics. Also if you do decide to add LEDs make sure if you add led's that they don't get hot, you don't want to be raising the temp in there.

Never understood blue LEDs, personally. White would show the lovely colors of the cigars whereas with blue the maduros will look pitch-black and the claros will look oddly green-hued.
As far as "infusing" a humidor with coffee... :disturbed:

Thats the second time youve requested someone fill up your humidor. I recommend you work on doing that yourself, by finding what you like to smoke. Who wants a humidor full of stuff you dont like, especially one you took the time to personalize.
I dont really expect anyone to fill it up...but as they say (ask and you will receive)..course that aint never worked before, but there is that first time you know...but I'll smoke anything cigar at least once..

Rule #1 of bombing, do not ask to be bombed, how to get bombed or say no one has ever bombed you before.

I have to ask... do you think the cigar might have been horrible because it was a cheap cigar or not properly rested? One day in a humidor ruining a cigar just sounds a bit farfetched.
Na it was that cedar, someone mentioned that maybe it wasnt spanish yesterday so I check some Spanish against the humidor and it doesnt look like the Spanish cedar, you know when you buy cheap, you get what you buy...its doing nice since I did the Colombian coffee and vanilla in it, I'll use Spanish cedar when I build the box trays. but I sure do like looking at that box and with the lights it should look great..
Rule #1 of bombing, do not ask to be bombed, how to get bombed or say no one has ever bombed you before.
Oh you are talking about those guys who send out cigars...right...never expected any of you guys to send me cigars, I just signed up to do that trade thing, thought that would be like fair trading...I like trading or swapping...but just so That bombing thing dont happen Im going to take down my address...
there deleted my address, I just thought that address thing was for the trading thing..glad you mentioned that, Id been in a spot if that had happened...
some of you guys take this cigar thing a lot more serious than I do and it is from you I hope to get more info...I just smoke cigars, about 5 a day, so I buy 4-5 $19.00 bundles a month and now Im also buying samplers to expand my variables...since I smoke them as fast as I get them filling this box is going to take a while, but that is my tickle not yours...I just hoped to maybe do some swapping and trading...
Well I figured out how to use my left hand to delete the pics, but I did get those baby blue LED's ordered. so I will put the pics backup.

I'd do some swappin / tradin with ya. I know you go through them like crap through a bull goose, but do you have a preferred brand, strength, etc. I'm AARP qualified, but started cigar smoking just a while back. I've collected a fair amount that range all over the place....strength, size, you name it. We could do a 5 or 10 count "what the hell, anything goes" blind swap just for grins. You don't like what you get....I'll fix it. I don't like what I get....I'll send em to my buddy Jaybird as a long distance kick in the nuts. Mortgages are serious, cigars are fun.

Yep, it's been kinda' white, but nothing like our BOTL up in the NE. Went to the farm this last weekend and enjoyed it quite a bit. Had a KFC Definas or two with a bottle of brandy and seemed to get through it just fine. We were working on the Lowe flat bottomed boat to get it ready to get up in the creeks at Kaw Lake to catch some crappie soon! One can bag a stringer of crappie that average over a pound, with some pushing 3 pounds. Just a hell of a place to sack up some fine table fare

Be careful with this humidor. I had the same one from ebay. Worked great after resealing the glass for about 5 months. Then the magnets in the door came loose. Once those were loose it quickly became obvious the door wasn't square. I was never able to square it back up and make it work right. Not sure how I would try to fix the door magnet problem because it is a good looking humidor. On a side note it isnt spanish cedar and that is why the strong cedar smell. I too found it to be overpowering but was never quite able to get it under control. Not to rain on your parade on this just be ready with the back up cooler in case my bad experience becomes yours.

Your humidor will hold a better rh when it is full of cigars. Stack those suckers up! You need the cigars taking up more room than empty space. This will help your humidor stay at a more consistent rh.
If you just HAVE to see some, put them at the top of your glass top.
