Screens: brass or stainless steel?

So, since removing the filter from my pipe a week or so ago, I just got my 3rd mouthful of ash and dead coals, so it's time for a screen.

Have never used anything but brass screens from back in the 90's when I was a big pot smoker.

Any real difference between the 2?

of ash beforeMay be because the shank extends 2/3 of the way into the bowl, but with the top half removed, creating an open channel starting in the middle of the bowl with tobacco directly in it.

Just my theory as I know I'm puffing gently as I've learned with stronger pipe tobaccos, unlike a cigar, you don't want to fill your mouth full of smoke. With most pipe tobacco, this easily overwhelms the palette and you get a harsh, generic Tobacco taste, and miss all the nuanced flavors. Plus, packed right, the smoke flows freely and easily with the same gentle puff, just longer in duration for more smoke.

Plus, I learned from my wild days in the 90's, not to suck too fast or hard on a bowl, or you'd cough out all the desired smoke, and get coals in your throat if your screen had developed a tear or hole.

Pipe smoking is definitely more detail oriented than Cigars, and along with good advice, just takes a lot of practice to get everything down it seams.

I'm good at filling the bowl just right, now need to work on small sips of most tobaccos, and tamping without having the opposite effect and putting out the coals.

of ash beforeSomeone on Cigar Weekly gave me some good advice. Don't try and smoke every last bit of tobacco. Keep a little at the bottom that acts as a filter, and just dump it with the ash and dead coals when you're done.

I think trying to smoke every bit, plus the shank in the bowl of my MM Cob were the cause. Now I will be sure not to try and smoke every little bit. Pipe tobaccos are mostly extremely cheap, especially coming from the cigar world, so no reason to worry about dumping a little unburnt tobacco.

I never smoke all the tobacco in the bowl. Yes it does act as a filter a little bit. That's why I like a 1/4 or 1/2 bent stem.
Seems to keep a lot of the moisture in the bottom and for me provides a cooler smoke.
As with anything it's a personal preference. I don't get concerned about relights either. If I'm enjoying the pipe it doesn't
matter.

Interesting info about the bent stem providing cooler smoke. I think my MM would probably be considered a 1/4 as a guess. The bend is right at the end, if that matters
