So, I have offhandedly mentioned in the past that I typically put out almost all my cigars when they reach the roughly 2 inches left point, as the taste makes a dramatic shift to unpleasantness.
Its been said that purging will eliminate this taste and return it back to normal and allow me to smoke more of it.
I have tried many times now, and have never noticed any change at all or especially any improvement.
Is there some trick to this I'm missing, or is it just a myth?
Thanks,
Sean

Im with Tony here. Try blowing out much more lightly. You may be causing the ember to burn way too hot by blowing so hard and causing even more harshness/bitterness. Also, not sure if u mean 5-6 times in a row- just 1 long, light blow at a time should do it

Have also tried blowing lightly and still noticed no improvement.
Maybe its just my crappy palate since it seems to help everyone else

Yes, try 1 long lighter blow after every 4-5 puffs

Yes, try 1 long lighter blow after every 4-5 puffsGotcha.
Didn't realize it was something that needed to be done throughout vs just once the taste goes south...
Thanks

Also, do find that you are a quick Smoker? If so, you may be overheating the cigar even before you purge. Do you find yourself making a lot of touch-ups? Again, may be overheating the cigar. All leading to that off-putting taste.
In the case of touch-ups, I purge to correct the burn unless I let it go too far before correcting.

This! I made a lot of cigars worse by blowing really hard and really long. I find that very soft breaths and short duration work best.
Purging won't always fix issues. but it often does.

Purging won't always fix issues. but it often does.Yeah, i have tried blowing gently and briefly, but it hasn't made a difference.
I never have taste issues until the last 1 or 2 inches

I got in the habit of a purge every time the ash drops. Just an easy way to not forget.

I begin smoking MUCH MUCH slower, when the cigar becomes harsh toward the end. I find smoking slower keeps the cigar cooler and it helps with the harshness - a lot.
Ultimately, I let my palate determine how often should be puffing. I find its ultimately about taking a puff at the absolute last moment before the possibility of ruining the burn, or having the cigar go out.
Also, I find keeping a bit of an ash helps quite a bit.

I find that last bit interesting. I always try to keep my ash on. But I guess there could be those who keep it knocked off and such. Keeping the cherry exposed would make it more susceptible to wind and other factors and could lead to it burning hotter than with the ash on.

Yah, it's weird, you'd think the ash making a difference in the smoking experience is a myth, but it makes a tangible difference. I do find that when the ash is too long the cherry starts wanting to go out.
You're right, most cigar enthusiasts keep the ash on. Not sure, how long it lasts when puffing hard though.
