View Full Version : It's that time again- organizing the cigars

At least once a year I remove all of my cigars from the wineador and organize and inspect them. It's been a while and it's kind of an unorganized mess. The fun part is I see exactly what is there and I always find somethings I had completely forgot about. It usually takes me about 2 hours. After Secret Santa Bob allusred obliterated me, I've got some work to do. Thanks again Bob, you sir are a great Santa!
I am planning on doing it tomorrow, since I am great at procrastinating. Why do today when I can wait until tomorrow?
Anyone else do this on a semi-regular basis?

Anyone else do this on a semi-regular basis?I have 7 tupperdors and 2, 74qt containers, and every one holds only certain categories of cigars, so they are organized as they arrive and get put in the proper container immediately, so no real need to do anything with them.
I'm a bit anal about having my cigars organized at all times.

I have to do this every so often. From times when I go and pack up a bunch of cigars for some out of town trip and then they just get stuffed back in when they don't get smoked. When I go to pack up my secret Santa I have to organize things a bit to make room..
When I do this I try to put same brands in same trays. Keep maw in together and put cigars in the trays I pulled them out of.

Sounds like you keep your cigars well organized. Mine, sometimes not so much.Yeah, everything has its place, so its easy to find anything I want.
Especially with my inventory app allowing you to create as many humidors as you want, so each container is listed and with its specific contents, so I know exactly where everything is, with the exception of my 2, nc singles tupperdors. I have about 50 loose singles in each, and they are all listed in the proper tupperdor, but still difficult to find anything specific with that many singles without dumping them out onto my bed to find it. Thus, I usually just root around briefly and pick whatever I see that sounds good.
I don't have a very logical system except to me really. Most would likely wonder why they are separated the way they are,lol
But it works for me, so that's the important thing

The majority of mine are in branded cigar boxes, and several are mixed boxes of the brand. And I am terrible about organizing cigars that are bombed. I need to figure out a solution for that. I think I need blank bands for them.

Luckily my humidor the top 2 shelves are bombs and a couple other cigars (>5) that need to be moved as they were purchased not bombed. Other than those its mostly correct.
I wish I had a another shelf for my showy sticks. But I probably could not fit them all in there.

Yeah I have a few cool sticks that have not been made in several years a couple got rearranged when I was packing my secret Santa. I have some rare oliva cigars and they have now been put in a box of OR Meliano that was only partially full.

Nice! My collection has been Fuente heavy for several years. I have been fortunate to get some of the special releases stuff over the years. I rarely buy cigars anymore, unless it something I really want. Maybe 2-3 boxes a year.

I do it a few times a year. Rotate stock and check / update inventory counts.
But I'm always doing the Tetris thing and refilling the winos from back stock in the coolers

Organizing the cigars. And keeping an accurate inventory. Those two things I do almost every day, especially the detailed inventory. Organizing in terms of location, not so good at.
Sometimes I worry that I've gotten the inventory wrong. Annoying that is. OCD ? Dunno. Since all of this involves doing something. Organizing or Inventorying. I don't let this go beyond the point of thinking about doing.
In the end since nothing ever gets done, at least I am not procrastinating.
After all, if there's something right there that should be done, needs to be done. It'll still be there to do tomorrow, and knowing that to be true, it should not be hard to let it wait more one day. Then once enough time' has gone by You will no longer have to do it at all. And You will have gained time for worry free naps in addition to more chances to sit back and enjoy smoking a cigar whilst your cigars get to mix and mingle as they wish.
Your Welcome.

I think I need blank bands for them. The very first thing I do with a bomb is spread them out on my bed and identify all of them, then add them in my app in the proper container, then put them in the proper container.
Kind of a pain trying to identify a large number of nc's, as there are just so many produced, I have a difficult time identifying them. Fortunately I have a caliper, wooden decorative board with a ruler and holes for measuring rg, and the Cigar Scanner app, all of which has greatly improved and cut down on time, identifying NC's.
Have no problem with identifying most cc's on sight since there are FAR fewer to keep up with
As for organizing your bombs (and all your other smokes too), I would highly recommend the Cigar Geeks inventory app. I've been using it for about 13 years now, and it contains all the information you could possibly want about your cigars, and everything is fully customizable for your `system". I love it. By far the best of all the inventory app's I have gotten just to check them out. It blows everything else away.
The android version is in the Play Store for download, but I believe that the Apple store no longer has it, but a Google search should turn up the Apple version pretty easily.
It has the occasional minor glitch, and hasn't been supported with updates for like 5 years at least, but once you get used to it, dealing with the main glitch is simple.

Nice! My collection has been Fuente heavy for several years. I have been fortunate to get some of the special releases stuff over the years. I rarely buy cigars anymore, unless it something I really want. Maybe 2-3 boxes a year.Fuente is by far my favorite nc marca, and I have a tupperdor just for them as I have so many on hand at all times.
Actually getting a little low and need replenish a bit.
Coincidently have made good friends with the admin of another forum who does photography and web design work for Fuente and JC Newman, and they always tell him to keep all the cigars they send him to photograph, so he has a literal ton of them, many with some pretty good age.
He has bombed me multiple times with some nice Fuente and Newman smokes, which I'm still smoking my way through after probably 6 months since the last bomb.
Very nice, generous guy. He spreads the wealth all over the forum to lots of people.
Also, obviously a very knowledgeable guy with Fuente and Newman smokes. Anytime I have a question about one, I text him and always get the information I needed.
Very good friend to have,lol

Wouldn't personally have considered them showy, so had to ask.
The Monte was just from my "special occasions" tupperdor and the other two from my "well aged" tupperdor

If whirling is your thing, then whirl away!I started using the app shortly after I started smoking cigars, so I never had to add a ton of cigars like you probably would. For me, it's simply adding new ones as they arrive, so its pretty quick and easy. Its just a matter of upkeep for me.
I would love to have the app on my tablet, but no way I'm adding over 500 cigars to do it, so I understand where a lot of people are coming from when this subject comes up

My wife gave me a wooden tubo davidoff thats top shelf showy. I have a couple of Bratalia barber poles (last made around 2008 i think?) I think are a bit showy even tho that cello is a bit rough looking. I have a few other sticks like that. Then I could count my casa Fuentes and some of my other Fuentes on that level. Stuff like that.

Barber poles I can kinda see also. I have a Hemingway Between the Lines that I guess I could consider showy due to its appearance, really nothing else I have I can think of that I would consider showy, but I have an obviously different criteria for showy that is apparently different from the norm.

I don't usually have enough cigars on hand to do it, but I do it a couple times a year with pipe tobacco.
Inspect tins and make sure the jars are sealed up good. Make notes if I'm low on something I really like.
Also inspect pipes and clean if needed.
It's calming and relaxing.

Well KaBob, the way my procrastinator is workin and the way Mrs Smokey keeps bossing me around, my cigar chores keep getting tossed to the back burner. Doesn't she understand that I'm a sensitive human being and have feelings and wants and needs too? I even have to cook néekid like I'm a piece of meat.

Sounds like you keep your cigars well organized. Mine, sometimes not so much. That I certainly do. I like having them separated by type, like ER's, EL's, over 5 years aged cigars, cc's, Fuentes, and nc's, singles and boxes. It makes it much easier to know where something is, and easier to choose what category I'm in the mood for.
I have a meager collection compared to many here though, so its easier for me than it would be with the massive collections some members have.
I have no idea how they can ever find anything specific, even using an inventory app or spreadsheet.
Multiple members have told me that they have more cigars than they can smoke in their lifetime.
Even when I was working in the oilfields and making very good money, i still never even approached the size of collection many have.
Kudos to those who have that many and are able to find anything, lol

Dig in how full is the walk in?For boxes open and a shelf, once I smoke through a few, I end up with a bunch of wasted real estate taken up by half empty boxes. I need to collapse some of these - maybe combine Skyflowers with Moon Gardens for example.
