Yes- it's here. MMM 2015!

Need an excuse (or not) to show your meers, smoke your meers, chat up your meers or ask questions about the white lady? Well, make an effort -- no matter how painful - to show the love in March. As always, I will be your guidance counselor.

Now go get the darn thing out the drawer. Or, if you have none, hang around here to get advice from the Meer Masters about what to get, why, and where to get something you'll cherish.

Go.

Y'all have a week to get your MMM-2015 pledge card signed.

"Got me a meer and I'm for sure going to smoke it during March. I mean, maybe not all the time but a least once in a while. That, or I don't have a meerschaum but I do have a Missouri Meerschaum, and I'll feed around the edges; or I have not a clay meerschaum but I want to know why Meer Meisters around the world like them and, more important, how to select one for purchase that won't give me any problems.

Signed:

(your name)"

One week to kick-off.

I'm going to go to the pipe shop today and look at their meers. You're making this sound like too much fun to miss out on...if they have a good one, I'll get it and sign up!

Do you know a good one when you see one, Kevin? We would certainly benefit from your company here but not if you get a pipe on impulse that is doomed to gurgle for all eternity. The Meer Meisters here are looking out for you already.

Mister Moo

Push stem, block, not pressed...what other tips/help have you got for me? I admit I haven't had a meerschaum before.

most of the clay pipes have a nylon push pull. Remember to always remove the pipestem by turning it clockwise and to reinsert the stem also by turning it clockwise. If you turn it counterclockwise you will probably back the push-pull threaded section of the pipe, bad form but not the end of the world.

whatever pipe you get make sure it has a 4 millimeter airway, not a 3 millimeter airway. The larger pipes, especially those with 4 millimeter airways, are almost always gurgle free. Smaller carved cute little pipes with 3 millimeter airways are almost always depressing to own. In my humble experience!

I have had good luck with all my 4 millimeter meerschaum pipes. I don't think it matters whether the bowl is block or pressed other than the potential for coloration. Folks say that block colors better than pressed; African meerschaum colors differently than the Turkish - see images online for the difference . As far as major brands go, there are uniformly good reviews on CAO and Altinok. I have a large dublin by Payçok (pie-kosch) that has been a real pip for $90: their 4mm seem to get good reports. Otherwise, look for a good mortise and tenon fit and a low centered airway in the chamber.

get whatever shape moves you but remember, the more intricate the carving, the harder it is to keep it clean and free from ash and bits of tobacco. I favor smooth classic pipes myself... But that's just me.

Just my opinion - hope it is helpful.

I am Meer-less myself. Not even a meer lined briar.

So I guess sign me up under the "I want to know why they're so awesome and should I buy one" crowd. I have been looking at clay pipes lately....maybe I should jump up my Meer game instead.

I wouldn't buy one, so no worries. Why would I want my briar to be more fragile? :D

If I get one, I think I would spring for one of those dimpled billiards. I like the look of them, and I like how the African Meer colors. What I don't care for, are the prices :p

You understand, I am not here as an enabler - only here to try and make the odds go your way if SOMEONE ELSE is a PAD enabler. :D

Last meer I bought (a "cheap" but large/large Paycok dublin with clamshell case) was at a B&M in JAX/San Marco a few years ago - thought $90 was high for a Paycok but the pipe was exacty what I was looking for.

Holy Guacamole! The closest thing from Altinok is about $170-$190; Paycok runs around $120 (however, the patriotic bejewelled bulldog trinket box (http://www.paykocimports.com/qz19124-bejeweled-patriotic-bulldog-trinket-box/) is a close out bargain - something for the bosses birthday?

My African Meer will be my travel pipe for March. For long smokes around the house I'll use a Baki basket weave since it has a large bowl, and a l'll use a little Cevher figural for short smokes. I have two other meers that I don't care for at all...one I don't know the maker and the other is a crappy Storient.

I was just smoking some homemade twist in an Altinok meer when I came across this thread. Since it's March already, I guess I'm participating :)

I also have a cheap mini-meer that smokes pretty well. And numerous MMs, which is what I mainly smoke.

What do I win?

This is a good start for a, whatever.... cigar forum. Nice to see a some clay head fellowship. Besides enjoying our meet this month it is good to do a little recruiting when possible because March Meer Madness in going to be a regular annual event.

As the nucleus of clay-pipe doings around here I think each of us need to do what we can to recruit, enable and corrupt those without clay pipes. If we can add a few dozen more meer smokers here for MMM-2016 I think we can charge dues and entry fees. Participants here in 2015 are in for a cut of the profits. We're gonna be rich thanks to HerfnTurf.

I feel your pain, q. I have enough briars but I smoke a MM General more than any of them; it has been burned and mudded several times over the years - lve the General! I like my meers for a few reasons but, first and foremost, when they're clean they don't add anything to the tobacco; A meer lets you know exactly what's what in a blend. For this reason I prefer a meer when I smoke a new-to-me tbacco for the first several times. Next, they barely (or rarely) ghost much so, for traveling, one meer can cover a couple of different tobaccos. Finally, they tend to smoke cool and it's pretty hard to get one soggy by smoking too much in a day.

As a sort-of slob, I like classic meers with smooth finishes because it' easy to keep them free of tobacco and ash. Exception: I could not pass on the Yanik cabbage which was too big, weird and carved to ignore.

Here is a disrespected Kaywoodie White Briar; I guess it is a fake meerschaum - never understood the white briar. I got mine off'n ebay a long time ago and I thought it was the hottest smoking pipe on earth. Now, years later, I think it smokes small but fine except for the a slight gurgle; this pipe has a threaded stem and was delivered with a schtinger. It's OK. Maybe I learned a few things about pipe smoking since I bought this thing. Yes, it is briar. Yes, it is vulcanite and wood painted white. Why regrets?

Well, basically it's a piece of junk :) The draw is ok, and it smokes dry, but the bowl is at a weird angle and that little lip on the top makes it very difficult to light. Also, the drilling is centered, but the bowl is crooked. I haven't figured out how to get a decent smoke out of it. Luckily, it is a fairly inexpensive regret. I do still occasionally smoke it from time to time, hoping I'll figure out the right combination of variables to make this thing click.

Although they are no longer making them, CAO meerschaums are of good quality and can be found on Ebay. I have an SMS meerschaum and am very happy with it. If you're buying online, pay close attention to the measurements and get a sufficient sized pipe for your needs. Probably gonna need a little guidance as far as what to do to prep it. Meerschaum is way out of my realm!!!

No, it has been smoked but from the pictures, as far as I could tell, it seemed very clean. Little to no coloring. A little bit of rim char.

Comes with the case...spoke to the seller and he really had little idea about pipes. Got it in a an estate sale.

We'll see if I did well or not when it shows up I suppose! :pipe:

St. James Flake from our inaugural group buy. One thing I have noticed about this baccy (other than being delicious), is it wet as hell and needs considerable dry time. I don't usually plan my smokes that far ahead so left a few flakes in a plastic bag to be my "ready to smoke" baccy. After almost a week in the bag I pulled out a flake and it was still way to moist for my liking. So I look over and see the heat gun I was using earlier on some estate stems and though....hmmmmm. About 20 seconds with the heat gun and that baccy was good to go.

Hi Mister Moo,

Kaywoodie did make meerschaums (or they were made for them) and they were well considered in the 1950s. I don't know the heritage and history of the White Briar but they were a pretty good seller back in the day.

I haven't smoked a meer in about 35 years but last fall I purchased a cased Inderwick meerschaum prince on eBay that I will indulge in after I get it cleaned. Lack of pics and cleaning was a personal matter but Inderwick was an English store up to the 1960s and it's probable that it was made in Austria. It's a group 3 size and despite my tardiness I'm looking forward to firing it up because like you, I've become a better smoker in the last 35 years and I might better appreciate the meer now. Pics will follow.

There's a microwave trick for damp cigars - nuke it for 5 or 10 seconds, blow out the steam, repeat as needed. I wonder if a similar treatment would work on pipe tobacco?

A little cake - fergettabowdit. Crud (not char) on the rim - that's a personal thing. If you want it gone and kept gone it'll be a smoke x smoke thing - same ole same ole; spit and a paper towel + a little gentle rubbing when the pipe is cold.

Hiya Brandon,

First, congratulations! The pipe looks better than it did in the listing and I left a few of the pictures in this post cuz it's so pretty. Enjoy it!!

As stated, I haven't smoked a meer in a long time but I've worked on a lot of them. Use care, because briar and meerschaum are very different raw materials. Meerschaum's absorbent (not like a sponge) and a less than pristine cloth can cause a (permanent) stain. Rub carefully because even moderately coarse cloth can round the surface.

Getting the tar stain off of the rim (entirely) will be difficult. No soaps, chemicals (absorption) or abrasives are the rule of the day.

When meers are manufactured they're polished with beeswax that would burn off soon after smoking commenced. Others on this thread may be able to offer more insight about polishing them but gently rubbing the surface (highlights in this case) with a sheet (material) will smooth the surface very slightly for polishing. Do not use the Handi-Wipes that I use on a meer (briar's fine).

CAO's first business was meerschaums and their pipes because the most respected brand of Turkish made meerschaums. It was long after that CAO began to have cigars and tobaccos made for them. Did the seller give you a date on this pipe? Looks like 1970s.

Regards,

Pete

(Speaking of March Madness less Meer? How 'bout those MSU Spartans? How 'bout NC State taking out Villanova? Go Wolfpack - OOOOWWWWWOOOOO0000000000000000oooooooooooooooooo.. .)

Clean rim indeed!

As a sports fan, I love the upsets. No one saw NC State doing what they did yesterday! What a game to boot! Edge of my seat the whole time!

As a gambler though...I hate it hahaha. Losing Nova in my brackets more or less wiped me out of competition. But it is OK, now all there is left to do is sit back, smoke, and enjoy the games!

Had a cigar outside this evening as the rain went away, the sun came out, and we were sitting in the mid 50's. No I'm enjoying a bowl of PS LNF in my meer. A very nice follow up to the stick.

Burnin some nice tobacco in my Missouri Meer General. Newminster 400 Superior Navy Flake. A real sleeper - can't believe it's so cheap, this stuff's good!

A slight downside is that I'm still breaking in the general so there's some sour corn smell added to the navy flake.

Hi Bruce,

Did you smell a chocolate top note on the Newminster 400? It is a well made tobacco. Similar to Stokkebye Luxury Navy but the cut's more like Gawith & Hoggarth.

Sour corn smell? You chillin' or distillin'? :)

Yes, I guess you could call it chocolate, kind of like hot cocoa. I have some of the Stokkeybe's navy flake, which is also quite nice, but between the two I'd take the newminster.

Yes, the cob is from one of those 10-packs of seconds from Missouri Meerschaum. It had a strong sour smell, almost like turpentine when it was new, but it's mostly gone now.

Keeping the faith with some homemade flake in my Altinok meer. Just finished a bowl so I pursued the only logical course of action - lit up another one!

Here Are Some Things I've Learned This March Meer Madness:

1. Even a Briar-holic can buy and appreciate a nice Meer pipe.
2. It really is true, some blends just taste better in a Meer.
3. Yep, it's also true that they don't ghost (at least not easily)
4. They aren't as much work as some would lead you to believe...
5. And ultimately, I have learned that Mister Moo is a big ol' enabler :p

Meers are fun :D

March is almost at an end and I'm smoking PH Dark Strong Flake while watching some Sherlock. While I don't think she has gained much color, it has been fun bringing the Meer out almost everyday.

Smoking some Ashton Guilty Pleasures in my smooth billiard meer. The flavor isn't bad but it's a bit goopy.

Having some Peter Stokkybyes Luxury Navy Flake in my Altinok meer. It's definitely showing some more color from all the extra meering this month. I'll post a pic on the 31st. Have y'all had a similar experience?

Showing it next to my full-size Altinok meer.

& since it's the end of the month, comparing the Altinok before and after pix - after is above, before is below:

Looks like it picked up a little color during the March Meer Madness. Looking forward to the April Meer Madness :)
