NOOB With some Pipes, what do I have??

Hey all!

I'm only a few months old in the cigar world and I've drifted over here a few times to check out the pipe side of things. I originally figured I'd like to try out pipes eventually...that is until I visited my parents house this weekend and saw some pipes my mom had bought at an estate sale that she thought looked cool. Apparently the former owner was a Marine, and had passed away and his wife had an estate sale so she could move closer to her kids up north. My mom gave the pipes to me and I figured I could try to restore them since I had seen a few tutorials posted on here recently.

Here's what I ended up with, 5 pipes and a stand with I'm guessing a tobacco jar.

They are all used, the black one has a broken stem, and one of them has what I'm guessing to be old burnt tobacco still in it.

Anyone recognize any of these pipes and can tell me more about what I've got? I'm going to check out the tutorials and see about restoring some of these guys. Do y'all think restoring them is worth it? Or are these just basic pipes and easily replaceable? I can take more detailed pictures if anyone wants or needs.

Also, what are some good online sites for pipe supplies...tobacco, cleaners, stems, etc?

Going to hit up the Noobie trade here soon as well!

I'd say restore what you can. Hope that isn't the original owner in the urn behind them. sorry, just what came to mind.:)

The second from the top and the bottom pipe are both Dr. Grabow. As for dollar value, not much, but they are most likely good smokers. I can't tell what the others are from the pics. I you let us know what is stamped on the side/bottom we can most likely tell you more.

I like that sandblasted pipe 2nd from the bottom. They all look like they would clean up nice. Congrats on the new pipes!

Thanks, I'll take some pics of the stamps on them. I don't really care about dollar value, more just if they are worth trying to restore or not. Thanks for the help!

I'd say you have early symptoms of PAD. Sorry, there's no known cure :)

But cereally, good haul!

There are lots of places that sell replacement stems, incl. the amazing Amazon. I'm thinking about getting a few of those fancy swirl patterned ones to tart up some of my cobs.

Sure they're worth restoring. If a pipe is $30 new (Like Dr. Gs) and you only put a couple of dollars (a few pipe cleaners, a little salt and some alcohol) into restoring it to good working condition, you're a winner. I've restored a few already and am always on the lookout for them.

Plus I like the idea of taking something old and putting a little work into it and bringing it back into the world of being used again. Too many people have the "Throw it away and buy another one" mentality these days. But that's a different topic for a different forum I suppose. :)

Bruck I love the cheap aftermarket stems for cobs. A little drill & file work, and presto, even better smoking pipe.

My thoughts are from looking at the other pipes, the black one may be better off sitting in a box until you find a pipe one day that is broken and can salvage a stem to use on the black pipe.

If that black pipe ends up being a "keeper" then http://www.norwoodspiperepair.com/ would be a place to have a stem fitted. The last job they did for me was two stems for a pipe and it ran $67.46.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I just posted up in the new pipe smoker trade, thinking I'll work on the 2nd from the top first as it seems to be in the best condition, and that should give me a nice starting point!
