View Full Version : What’s the best cheap cigar you’ve smoked?

I see a lot of very awesome cigars go up in the “what did you smoke today” thread, some fairly pricey ones too and while I love a $15-$20 smoke as much as the next guy or gal, I’m looking for some good daily options, something I can buy by the bundle and don’t feel funny tossing if time doesn’t permit. I see cheapies all over the place but I’m curious if any of you have tried them and what you’re thought are. I see house brands a lot, cast offs, seconds, Cuban sandwiches, short filler cigars, and I’m curious if you come across any that have exceeded your expectations.

For me winner goes to General Grant. I tell people it tastes like a strong sun tea. Next up for me is the Black Ops bundles and the the berserker. Pick your leaf all of them are pretty solid. The Black Ops Rubicon is not good. While not a budget cigar by MSRP the Ave Maria can usually be found at close to budget prices and is by a long shot my most smoked cigar.

I've found a couple of cheap dandies in the JR Alternative lines, especially the Edicion Limitada alternatives. Favorite for me is the E.L. alternative to Cohiba Sublime. Is it a Cohiba from south of Miami? Lord, no. But, at 2.50 each in a bundle, it's a full bodied, flavorful treat, and it's long filler all the way

Hands down Chillin' Moose; great profile and never had an issue with construction or burn. Here locally they sell for $4 a piece.

For something like this I was hoping for bundles of 20-25 for anywhere between $25 and $40 bucks. I see Bahia in this price range, I see a lot of major label seconds or fumas around this price point too.

Best one so far is Ramon Bueso, found them for half of nothing on Cbid a few years ago. They gained a little steam and price bumped up a bit but still really worth it for the smoke

I second the Leccia White that SoCal gunner mentioned and I'd also throw in BG Meyer which is made by Camacho. Holt's still has Toro at $65 a box of 20.
Perdomo Lot 23 is a pretty good mild smoke for the price

B&M-wise, for $5-6, the Padron Londres in either Maduro or Natural is a damn nice smoke. The Maduro was one of my go-tos due to the price and quality when I first started, and I still love them. They burn fairly quick - making them a great time-sensitive smoke. Rarely ever see Padron go on sale, but they are very much worth their MSRP. Though, a B&M box discount could knock it down 10% or so.

Ramon Bueso all the way. Both the maduro and habano. But they need a year of rest before you'll really be rewarded.
My other standby is the Herencia Cubano Oscuro Fuerte.

Some sticks not necessarily considered cheap but can be found on cigar bid, especially freefall
Room 101 farce habano Lonsdale I have got 5 and 10 packs for about $3 a stick
Ramon bueso olancho which I like better than genesis can be had for about $3 in 5, 10 and 15 packs
Rocky Patel decade Lonsdale box 20 was going for 76 on freefall
Not $2 sticks but close and all good smokes imho just have to check freefall and where they have big lots for sale
Man o war side projects can be had for about $2 in 5, 10 packs
Bahia maduro robusto pack of 20 for $29 on cigar bid freefall right now for 3 days I think just adding my .02

Depends a bit on what you mean by cheap, I suppose.
CI's Pirate's Gold used to go for about a buck a stick. I haven't bought any in a while, so I don't know the going rate. If you can wait and let them rest a year, they smoke in the $5-$7 range. ROTT they smoke in the "pay me 100 bucks and I'll finish one" range. I like the natural better than the maduro.
Rocky Patel Vintage 92 seconds are pretty good. I quit buying them when I got my own Sumatra blend ironed out. Still miss the perfecto vitola, though.
My absolute favorite budget stick really doesn't belong in this forum, so I won't mention Quintero (brevas are what I don't buy when I'm not smoking them). If they really did exist they would need a year (at least) of rest, but also if they did exist, they would frequently come that way from the supplier.

Sent from my SM-G960U using TapatalkJR's has em at $30 for a fiver, and near a $100 for a box. Looks sold out elsewhere. I'm not that interested for the price, since I haven't tried them. But, I'll keep an eye on them.

They're non-banded but taste really good. I try to keep a few on hand.

La Estrella Cubana Oscuro was a pretty good budget stick. They may have discontinued the Oscuro, because I couldn't find it online. I'd imagine their other sticks would be just as good.
