View Full Version : The cigar you should have tried by now but haven’t...

I realize we have some real cigar veterans here so maybe this doesn’t apply given the amount of cigars you’ve smoked over the years but I’m constantly surprised by the number of brands that I should have at least tried by now and for whatever reason just haven’t. The one that jumps to mind right away is Rocky Patel. Especially since he has like 4 million different varieties under his label. I don’t have anything against RP, I’ve just never had any real motivation to pick up one of his sticks. You guys and gals got any sticks you’ve been procrastinating on?

In the spirit of honesty, and this may get me booted from the club, but I’ve never smoked a Gurkha either...

I think they’re brothers ole Rocky & Gurkha and most of their offerings taste like a rolled up news paper, a very one dimensional poorly constructed one at that. They’re not for me just not in my wheelhouse. If I had to have one or the other Rocky has had a few I enjoyed recently and in the past the ALR today was a very good cigar. The Decade is one I used to have occasionally. Smoke what you like, like what you smoke!

Some are born weathy.
Some are born lucky.
If You have not smoked a Gurkha, You must be one of the Lucky ones.
Best to stay Lucky.

Biggest issues I've had with both Gurkha and Rocky are constant, and I mean 4 out of 5 sticks, construction issues. But that doesn't mean I haven't enjoyed any of their cigars. A few I have liked and have somewhere in one of my Tupperware.

Here are a couple of ones I've enjoyed:
Gurkha Red Witch
Rocky Patel The Edge Maduro
Aging Room Quattro F55 Maduro
Avo XO
Foundation The Tabernacle
and I'm a big fan of La Aurora Cigars

Haven't tried an Opus and probably won't. Haven't had any cuban Cohibas either and probably won't. I'd rather save the money for things that don't just burn up into smoke.

Probably 99% of Cigarbid Gurkhas are only recommended to the tight-budget-minded smokers - and I'm not criticizing anyone's budget. There have been a handful I wouldn't mind revisiting, but would have to scour the reviews to find which ones.

But, it's fun to find something new and win it for $1. Can't go wrong dropping a dollar on a tosser - you'll get your money's worth in education.

There's a stigma to Gurkha, and to me, I'd rather know why first-hand, especially on the cheap. Yes, a lot are shit-sticks that are MSRP'd to be on par with Davidoff. Yes, it is a brand you could be OK with in not visiting. Yes, Tony is secretly a Gurkha snob.

Supposedly, Gurkha is "under new management", and with the San Miguel, there is hope for the brand...but I'm not holding mt breath for it!

In fact, he plans to release a Commemorative Limited Edition entitled "The One You Should Have Tried," in honor of this thread. Should land everywhere by Tuesday.

The big brands I haven't tried or don't remember smoking:

Casa Fernandez
Don Pepin
EP Carillo
Kristoff
La Palina

But, I do believe I have at least one of each of those in my tupoerdore - and probably on are because of the Bums. That list would also be longer, most likely, if I hadn't become a Bum.

BIG shoutout to the awesome Bums who've helped me along!

I have never smoked a Viaje or a Black Label. I buy nearly all of my cigars from a local B&M and they don't carry them.

I imagine in Sumatra, Connecticut, Habano, Maduro, and Cameroon with 1990, 1993, 1997, and 1999 variants. Don’t get me started on the anniversary sticks....

I actually had a lady name drop Rocky Patel to me the other day. I don’t even know how to react to that. I went with a simple, elegant “k”

Don’t even think about it Mark. I know who you are. I know what you do. :)

I did smoke almost half a Gurkha once.

Simple enough solution!

Well I'm not going to smoke something I wouldn't pay for myself on someone else's dime. But the big trouble is, what if I LOVE it? Then I'm stuck hunting for bargains on $30 sticks and don't want to smoke my $2.50 to $7.00 ones anymore. Nope, I'd just as soon not get into it. I got plenty of fine pipe tobacco to keep me quite satisfied anyway.

Actually, the Vintage 92 perfecto is one of my favorite store-bought cigars. I used to buy bundles of the seconds on the Devil's Site pretty regularly. But now I roll my own Sumatra blend that I like better. I don't roll perfectos, though, and that's my second-favorite vitola. Sometimes I just have to break out a single match and light a perfecto. At times like that it's usually a Short Story.

Are ya bidding yet? RP galore over on the Angel's site.

I placed a couple buck bids that I knew would get outbid when I registered to try and get a sense for the site. Seems like the best value for sticks, I just haven’t come across anything that blew me away that I wanted to go all in on.
